    When the song was first written in 1969, America was in a state. Vietnam was in motion, Richard Nixon was president, and the country was still coping with the loss of Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy, who were both assassinated in 1968. “Bridge Over

    I've said before and will say again, Art Garfunkel's is one of the premiere male folk/pop vocalist voices of the 60s-70s era. If he and Karen Carpenter had ever had a child together, I can't help but think that the child would have been one of the greatest pop/rock/folk singing voices of all time. And, of course, Paul Simon is simply one of the great songwriters of my lifetime. I might suggest Sounds of Silence or Scarborough Fair, as a next Simon & Garfunkel song.

    Paul Simon intended it to be a two verse Gospel tune. Art thought it could be bigger than that and encouraged Paul to write a third verse. That verse would send this song to a higher level. What a powerful delivery by Art interpreting Simon's intentions.

    This version is lovely, but you missed out on the GORGEOUS harmonies when Paul Simon sings with Art Garfunkel... and although I usually only prefer live renditions of songs, this is one where the STUDIO version - with the added orchestra - is BREATHTAKING.
    Aside from Simon & Garfunkel's original, my other tied-for FAVORITE VERSION of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is by:
    JOHN LEGEND
    ...His piano adds just a tiny bit of Gospel feel and his vocals are WARM & PASSIONATE. There are several of his live performances on YT... The two most recent ones - FROM 2022 - are my FAVORITES because he's added in the "SAIL ON SILVER GIRL" verse, which he dedicates to his Grandmother.

    Check Elvis's version of this 1970 Live in Las Vegas. "For Paul Simon, the song’s creator, Elvis Presley’s version sits comfortably in a league of its own." Simon was startled to discover that Elvis had taken on a song he’d written, although he did say it was a “touch on the dramatic side, but so was the song”. He continued, stating: “When I first heard Elvis perform ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’, it was unbelievable. I thought to myself: ‘How the hell can I compete with that?'”.

    Totally agree with you, Phil. I was in high school when this song first came out. I was dealing with some heartbreaking issues and a friend reached out to me. And so, at first, I related this song to that friend reaching out. As I grew older, I experienced more hardships. And this song became much more spiritual as I listened closely to the words. Not sure how Paul Simon meant for people to relate to it. But, it has brought me a lot of peace of comfort. And Art Garfunkel's vocals are like listening to an angel.

    I know others have commented this but you really need to hear the studio version of this beautiful song. I know this performance is lovely and very poignant because Simon & Garfunkel are reuniting here but this does not compare to the original studio version at all -- at least in my opinion. And it looks like, from the comments, that I am not alone in this regard. 😊 The original was the one that we were overwhelmed by when it came out in 1970, won all those awards and is still copied and revered today. Still holds up after more than 50 years. Trust me, you will not be wasting your time to listen to the original.

Look up his solo channel and see how many songs he has on there. I garauntee you will enjoy this. It's actually pretty incredible. • @karehelene
      @karehelene Рік тому +1

      I think it depends on your taste in music. Austin is very good, though I personally don't care for the country sound. I'd argue Mitch Grassi is the best tenor, but I will say we are very lucky to have such good singers entertaining us today.

    • @justkaron
      @justkaron Рік тому +1

      @@karehelene I agree that Mitch is incredible too. And it does depend on taste. Austin can sing without the twang due to his musical theater training. For example, his 'Bring Him Home.' And sometimes he lets her rip with that country boy sound. 😘 It's not real pronounced in this song.

    This song was Garfunkel's high point.
    But enventually Paul Simon dropped him because he was doing all the song writing and in most songs Paul sung at least half the song. Paul did not feel it was a 50/50 relationship and it really wasn't.
    Paul went onto have a phenomenal solo career and Garfunkel didn't.

    Jackie Evancho has a beautiful version of this song she sang with Corque du Soleil at age 13 or 14 I believe she was. She also was sick, lol, but since it was a one night only appearance, she dragged herself on stage. Wonderful job

    I would love to see your reaction to Paul Simon video of his song, “Diamonds on the soles of her shoes”. It was filmed in Africa I believe. It’s a stunner. It will make you smile.

    While you're in the mode of listening to superstars why not give a listen to Stevie Ray Vaughn, the goat of all guitarists. Listen to Texas. Flood or Life without you, 2 of his best.
