Who were the Sea Peoples? (Ancient Mediterranean and Bronze Age Collapse)

  • From around 1500 - 1200 BCE, the eastern Mediterranean was arguably one of the most prosperous regions of the ancient world. Trade, knowledge, people and new ideas flowed freely and for the most part, there was a good deal of political stability in the region.
Then, seemingly out of nowhere, they came. Boatloads full of battle-hardened warriors, many of them traveling with their families. They were a mysterious and diverse group of peoples who scholars today call the "Sea Peoples." We are told, mostly from Egyptian records that they created havoc everywhere they went and that empires fell before them and cities that had existed for thousands of years were reduced to ruble. However, was all this true? We do hover know that the world after their arrival wasn't the same.
Scholars still ask the question, "who were the Sea Peoples?"
In this episode, you'll get a bit closer to learning about and answering that question.

all the animations are really charming but very effective, especially when king's heads are slowly drifting across the screen waiting for their next keyframe, it reinforces that the animations are to supplement the material rather than be the main draw like they would in a pseudohistory video.

Fascinating. The Sea People sound like a highly organized group of pirates/raiders. How did disparate people with different languages and customs come together to form a lasting organization like this? Seems so unlikely. There must have been some great leadership and some sort of detailed charter about how spoils were to be divided, disputes resolved, different tribal laws and customs honored, etc. Also, they must have had some lingua franca. A very unlikely scenario.

We could envision it as waves of desperate people from different cultures converging on the Fertile Crescent.
There's nothing to deny the possibility that there was a lot of infighting going on. Overall attacking the well to do kingdoms would be much more attractive than killing other destitute desperate warriors/migrants.

The concept of needing a single shared language to form a unified group is a peculiarly modern one. It stems from the concept of the nation state (organising states into single self-governing peoples). The idea came about in Europe around this time that the way to define whether a group is 'one people' or not was whether they spoke the same language or not. Hence why you had programmes to centrally define a single language (e.g. France), or people's having a central language forced upon them (Irish/Welsh/Scots/Cornish), or weird divisions like German Vs Dutch Vs Austrian (north German is closer to Dutch, south German is closer to Austrian, but we say they're all different). Prior to this, multi-lingualism was much more widespread. Some areas would have a Lingua Franca, but often you just had people who could speak multiple languages commonly enough that translation wasn't as much of an issue.

You touched on the potential for it to be environmental factors, drought, famine that caused this invasion of sorts. That's where my mind tends to wander. For it to be a disparate group of people with separate identities and dress I've always had a hunch that it was less an organized invasion and more of a violent migration. Will we ever know for sure..?

One of my favorite parts of history to learn about, partly because it is shrouded in mystery. I've also heard that there may be a connection between the Trojan Wars and the Sea Peoples. Perhaps the Sea Peoples were refugees as a result of prolonged fighting in the Aegean. The Luwians (the people of Troy, Arzawa, and most of the rest of Western Anatolia) were probably a great constituent of the Sea Peoples.
Another interesting tidbit is the possibility that the Dananu, who are mentioned in Rameses III's inscription, may have been the Israelite tribe of Dan, whose territory was initially adjacent and to the north of the Philistines in ancient Canaan, and it also explains some peculiar aspects of the most famous biblical Dannite, who was Samson, who interacted with and even slept with Philistine women. Samson was also big and strong, like his Philistine counterpart Goliath. Must be those Aegean genes.

Great observation. The story of David and Goliath fighting eachother is also very interesting. Single 1-on-1 combat was a typical Greek way of settling disputes between armies. The fight between Achilles and Hector in the Trojan war is another famous example of this. Not sure if other neighboring civilizations might have had similar traditions. I think most leaders in those days would have had to be skilled warriors.

I always had this idea that maybe the trojan war and these people are connected. Imagine a great war ending after a long conflict. Suddenly you have hordes of veteran soldiers with nothing to do and hordes of dislocated people looking for a better land. And if you look at the works of Homer he does mention than several of the heroes of the war took their family and soldiers and wondered all over the world. For example Menelaus and Helen went to Egypt.

Read Homers "The Odyessy". It seems like a fist hand account. He says him and his other raiders hit Egypt, some through the Delta and some direct, many started taking women and plundering and Chariots and Egyptian forces came, many his men were killed, he laid down his weapon and took his helmet off and surrendered to the "King". He was captured with many of his men and kept for seven years working for the king as mercenaries. That sounds EXACTLY like the Egyptian account of the first Sea people raid. This is obviously a narrative from someone who either was there or heard the story.

Only issue seems to be that the tribal names given for the sea peoples match no major known ones at the time, and don’t appear to be of Greek origin, archaic or otherwise (the Linear B tablets seem to be of a completely different linguistic types than the tribal names given) and given that the odyssey starts directly after the Trojan war, and we’ve found the historical Troy, unfortunately showing that the historical Trojan war and the sea peoples Egyptian invasion wouldn’t make an “odyssey” origin fit well enough for the timeline. I’d chock the similarities up to coincidence more than anything else. That said, the theory would make an amazing story of its own, and could work for a plot device to world-build for a story where Ancient Greek and ancient Egyptian culture melded together centuries earlier.

    • @tribequest9
      @tribequest9 4 роки тому

@@themoreyouknow7418 We actually haven't found Troy, archeologist think what they have found is possibly Troy but there is still no definitive or hard evidence to say this is Troy. Also Ancient Greek language was not the same as that of Homers time....remember that Homer is recounting what was passed down as history, so names and words would be changed to match the current lingo of his time. So the story of The Iliad and the Odyssey could very well be consistent with that of the Sea Peoples.

@@themoreyouknow7418 well, while the timeline doesn't work, that may be due to the 400 years in between, and the lack of writing in that era. As for the tribal names, that's even more basic. Names people call themselves often do not match what foreigners call them. For example, imagine thousands of years fro now historians are trying to reconstruct American records, and see us talk about a war against the "Germans and Japanese". Would they be able to tell easily that it was against people who called themselves Deautcher and Nipponhi, respectivly? I think that's what's going on with the sea peoples tribes.

In Sardinia, many ancient strongholds and colossal stone palaces have been found.
They are part of the local hystorical heritage.
These enormous ruins are scattered everywere in the island.
Alongside these, a lot of bronze statuettes depicting horned warriors have been found, wich shows a culture inheritely linked to the sea and trade.
These warriors share the exact same features of the egyptian depictions of the shardanas
Even the rounded shield with many hidden blades is shared in both depictions.
A stele, possibly phoenician if I remember correctly, was found in the island, and in this stele the island is named Shardinia or something like that.
Wich eventualy developed and became SARDEGNA (italian) and Sardinia (english).
Sardinia, Shardinia and Shardana are blaitantly similar.
Wich is why many hystorians are positive when they claim that the Shardanas were natives of Sardinia
And Sardinians might be their direct descendants, since they share almost no genetic connection with other cultures near to their homeland, like Italy.

These are the biggest statues found in the island, alongside a massive necropoly and a few skeletons of what we can assume were warriors.
It seems that the Shardanas were a heavily militaristic society, wich is why even the pharaoh Ramses the second, hired some of them as his private guards.

I am imagining that because Egypt was a central and dominant power, it would have been a part of a culture where people would have wanted to go there, but it was too expensive. When times got tough, people would blame the central power for their policies that made more opportunities for egypt during crisis, but less for them. When egypt was trading across to these empires, then times got tough, they would have made trade more difficult to try to make up for the hard times, which would have worked, except it caused increased difficulty for these "sea peoples". In desperation and amid deadly strife, the sea peoples then rose up in anger at their oppressors, intent to return the favor.

came to mind.. in 1500s BC (and before/after) pharaos were battling with Hyksos (idk who they are).. from mid-1300s BC pharaoh Akhenaten ruled for almost 20 yrs, but was eventually driven out from rulership because Amen was 'lowered' from its' position and Sun was made monotheistic., but the next puppet ruler rised Amen back to its' old position.
1200s BC started with Ramesses family-line in charge, and Ramesses was of 'non-royal birth'. Amen-Ra would slowly become monotheistic 'King of Gods' until 1100s.
after Ramesses family name stops showing on king's list, successors are "high priests of Amun", no Sun mentioned.. And btw. to my knowledge, most paganic cultures were 'sun worshippers' until religions changed their culture.. Who knows, maybe sea peoples were kind of a United pagans collective pushing back the new religion.. (..don't rly know how them bringing their families would fit in this Picture though :D)

When it comes to the religion such as the Aten, the egyptian pantheon and the main religions today I must say of their similarities. An easy example is the depliction of the Madonna and baby Jesus which is similiar to Isis and Horus. The pagan religions NEVER went into obscurity. The main religions today are improvised versions of pagan religions. The main books and myths are fanfictions of the myths that came before.

You know with all the details based on how they looked it does seem like it was a forceful invasion for their survival trying to migrate else where as their only option, but with all that diversity it must also mean these diverse warriors were once not all united in culture/style before and perhaps a famine or violent war from an even greater enemy brought them together to flee like you mentioned. It must of been a threat to man for all of them in the region like no food or a very dangerous enemy. We see war is the result usually on neighbors that don't get along, but as to fleeing together and conquering a distant neighbor seems like the only option if you can't fight back what made you flee. Wish I could say something crazy like they were running away from The Titanomarchy but I'm not sure on the time frame of that occurrence this very moment. The Shardana are connected to the isle of Sardinia. The Nuragic civilization which resided there since before 2000BC and is responsible for constructing the Nurage megaliths, also constructed bronze figurines of there warriors wearing horned helmets armed with round shields and long swords are the obvious candidate for the Shardana. It's also interesting that Sardinia is genetically connected to Scandinavia via the I haplogroup. This same pre viking haplogroup is found in a small minority of Irish people as well in connough. Tuatha de danen were the original inhabitants of Ireland while tuath is an Egyptian word (connection) meaning immortal. My conclusion is that at least a part of the sea people coalition were bronze age vikings (Norse/Nuragic) operating out of their stronghold on Sardinia. This is the explanation for the high presence of the I haplogroup on Sardinia. Sardinia became the new Scandinavia far from home.

Hey ... I just want to add to your amazing video the following excerpt from a book “The penguin: historical atlas of Ancient Greece” (1995) from Midway page 20. Let me now what you think........”The movement of a new Indo-European population, the Illyrians, into the Balkans forced out the resident population; one group into Anatolia, the other into Greece. The invaders of Anatolia, the Phrygians, were supposed to have destroyed the Hittites and, like a tidal wave, caused the migration of the sea people. The sea People’s were thus just a displaced populations from Anatolia who then moved southward, destroying cities in Cyprus, Syria and Palestine before being repulsed at the borders of Egypt. Some of these groups settles (i.e. Peleset) while others sailed westwards, such as the Shardana who eventually settled in Italy”........
And then on page 22 1st paragraph it mentions that: “Aryan speakers invaded Greece and subjugated them. The last of these invasions, that of the Dorians, brought about the destruction of the Bronze Age civilization of Mycenae”.
what do you think? It seems the sea people are probably a similar story to the Germanic tribes that migrated (as a result of Turkic expansion into their lands) into Rome and ultimately destroying it...

It's really interesting when one reads the findings of archaeologists about the destruction caused to so many cities of the time. However, in my humble opinion, I don't think that they were the cause of it. They were a bunch of desperate peoples who really were looking for/needing a new place to settle down and as they encroached on the lands of others, conflicts arose. Concerning the origin of the Sea People it is worthwhile to mention that the a Lukka were probably the ancestors of the Lycians, that the Danuna were probably connected with the later Danaoi, that the Teresh are possibly related with the Tyrsenians, that the Peleset ,according to some scholars could be connected with the Pelasgians. It is not impossible that the Illyrian tribe Pherustae is etymologically connected with the Peleset.one interesting fact: in the Balkans was later worshipped a Dea Palaestina. As far as the Shekelesh are concerned, some scholars think they were not Siculi but rather people from Sagalassos, in Asia Minor. An alternative theory concerning the Sherden is that they were coming from the area were later the town of Sardis was founded.

Just now the "diverse" groups you identify, seem curious for, as I believe, are all areas the Greeks had colonized.
But maybe that was not till the iron age.
The main puzzler, is why they didn't try to integrate to these greener pastures, why none of the city states
opted to buy them off, as was sometimes practiced.
Furthermore, for such a tight knit community, as the regions around the eastern Mediterranean,
how did others not know this was going on, who these people were, etc. Afterall, they were do
alot of trade & riding all over the sea, something must have looked fishy.
I have more, but i will just add, finally, since the Egyptians knew so much about them that
they recorded & drew in such detail, why noy ask: who are you, what do you want,, how did you get
together, what did you do to the other cities, etc., Why not ask these simple questions?
Another thing, are the Armarna Letters where kings are asking other for help, are their disasters
because of this (besides the droughts). Anyway, it makes me crazy.

It appears that not too many scholars follow Herodotus anymore. The first thing you must do emphatically is not listen to or believe any chatter coming from religious Universities. The professors within those musty places are hell bent on changing history to suit their religion. To begin, Herodotus stated that Solon had been told that some 9000 years before his time, that a great explosion had taken place and caused a population problem in the Mediterranean. The islands of Santorini and Crete [Minos] were worst affected and only few survived from both these very rich Islands. Herodotus states that Solon was told that ny of these survivors left in what was left of their fleets and retired to Italy, Sardinia and other Islands as far aw2ay from the decimated area as possible. Now we do know that the Island of Santorini exploded in about 1450 bc and this timeline fits in almost exactly with the Exodus, [The Ramesses thing is a joke] which took place during the reign of Thothmosis of Egypt. Cline has tried to change the date of the Exodus to fit in with the Ramesses [Land of] which was so called long before anybody named Ramesses came along. The name of that region was called the Western Harpoon in Egypt with Apis [Memphis] being it's Ciry. This city was made up mostly of Jews and the Delta area was farmed by them. The Egyptians called them Hapiru because they followed the bull calf god known as Hapi [Apis as an older bull] Remember the golden bull statue of Moses? So what I am implying is that the explosion at Santorini was not 9000 years but 900 years before Solon, during the 1400's bc. Santorini exploded about 1450bc and the people from the Eastern Mediterranian fled toward Italy where they made a home for many years but were pushed out perhaps by Romans who became a strong empire. It could be possib;e that the Etruscans learned from he people of Minos for they wore similar headdress. So about 200 years later these people came back from wherever they had lived and worked for that period and tried to take back their islands now populated by others and so we have the Sea peoples attacking anywhere they could to try and resettle. They were of course defeated and Egypt took the survivors in as paid boatmen aand workers. Atlantis was Santorini and he plagues of Egypt were from that Volcanic explosion. Mr Cline, history is more im,portant than religion in the context of burying the truth.

    Good day friends.
On or about 1,000 years after the worldwide Great Flood mount Thera, a volcano in the Mediterranean, erupted violently for many days. Thus covering many settlements, cities and civilizations with thick volcanic debris. The accompanying tsunamis, from the eruption, flooded almost all coastal lands along the Mediterranean.
The exodus and plagues in Egypt from biblical accounts, during the time of Moses, was due to the same eruption of the volcano.
The destruction of the fabled city of Atlantis must have its original story created from the eruption of mount Thera.
With a life and death situation for the devastated colonies, thru the havoc of volcanic eruption, cities were buried, plantations, crops, animal life, families and relatives were obliterated. The surviving affected people together with all family members, even children and domestic animals, they all ventured to leave their original territories as to survive, they wandered throughout the Mediterranean waters for a new home. They were now called the Sea Peoples.
Even before the eruption of Thera, the Olympian Gods atop mount Olympus, transformed their palace into a superstructure spaceship and darted far away into deep space.
The wandering Israelites of exodus spend 40 years in the desert because the marauding and warring Sea People took a long time to finally settle down, establish themselves into a peaceful communities in new lands.
Have a nice day and future soon. Thank you.

Their inscriptions alone would imply they were apart of the local Canaanite dialect continuum. Ironically. It's their arch-nemesis the Hebrews who preserved most of their identity through the Old Testament. I don't know why. But I find it remarkable on how fast they seemingly shed their old selves in the new world. I only hope to live long enough to find out who they were before they were the Philistines.
