  • We received a deceivingly heavy snowfall in Colorado. In this video, I am using my John Deere 1025R to help my neighbors by clearing sidewalks and driveways.

    Blower-more moving parts, more expensive, slower but you can put snow well out of the way. Blade, great if you have large spaces and need to clear as quickly as possible AND you have room to store all that snow. through the winter. Cheaper. I’ll take the blower and a heated cab for straight snow removal use.

    I live in Colorado as well; we got a good amount of snow today and I wish I would have put the blower on! I went to purchase a cutting edge from JD about a month ago and what was a $45. blade now costs $150, It's only a 4' blade for my x500, so instead of throwing our old cutting edges in the metal bin at work I cut them down and drilled holes. Not to mention the one I cut was 5/16ths of an inch thick whereas the factory edge is 3/16ths, and I will flip it when the bottom wears out you can't do that with the factory edge on the x5, so that's a $300. savings, I imagine your cutting edges cost a bit more. I assume you should have a video today lol? I was that person who said I'd never get a cab, and I bought an OTC cab with the glass windshield, cheaply built but they are very nice for weather conditions. No need for heat in the cab, it is very comfortable even on very cold days, but it'll roast you in the summer.

      I keep trying different types of cutting edges because I go through enough of them that I have no expectation that any of them will be on there very long. I'm currently running a UHMW edge, which is wearing pretty decent, but it doesn't scrape up ice and hard packed snow as nicely as a steel edge. I also thought I'd never need a cab, but I think I'm getting pretty close to being ready to try one! :)

    Wow you guys are getting hit with a lot of snow. It's 61°F today here in PA. so now snow for a while.
    It's always best to have both a blade and a blower. Sometimes depending on the depth and how heavy one becomes more practical then the other. I always say the true test of any snow removal equipment is at the end of the driveway. 😆

    I like the blower the best. Snow doesnt melt off much in Wisconsin so it's nice to shoot it away. I would get a used plow however for those occasional times, like today; 1 inch of very wet slush and snow. The blower doesn't like that.

    • @TractorHoarders
      @TractorHoarders  Рік тому

      That slushy stuff sure makes it difficult for the blower. Usually I end up having to keep unclogging the chute with that stuff. Definitely not productive or enjoyable. I love using the blower for dryer snows though.

      I know this comment is old, but I agree to a point. On concrete and pavement you can't beat a blower, if you have a safe place to blow it. You can see he's constantly changing his chute trajectory to avoid hitting houses and cars. On gravel, however, unless you like raking the stones off the grass in the spring, forget blowing it.

    A little late but do you take the long PTO shaft off when switching from blower/broom to snow plow? I would really hate to bend it but it would also be annoying to always put back on when switching to blower again. Kinda defeats the purpose of quick hitch from one implement to another.

    • @TractorHoarders
      @TractorHoarders  Рік тому +1

      No, I keep the long PTO shaft on all the time. I’ve never had any issue with damage or concern about it. The front quick hitch is probably the lowest point of concern so something would likely hit that first before the PTO shaft in terms of clearance.

      It's the same concept as load balancing a computer. If I slow down to eliminate a line of spillover snow I don’t fill the chute fully so overall I move snow slower. But if you are picky like me and go back over the lines, now you're duration is right back up there. So when I'm in a rush with multiple properties I keep the chute full while trying to minimize spillover. It's usually negligible.
