- How To Tint Glass
I was looking for some colored glass vintage ashtrays that I could use in my studio for brush holders at the antiques market the other day but could not find any. What I did find was these two shallow dishes with ridges all the way around (prefert for holding my brushes!) and pretty facets pressed into the underside of the glass. They were cheap too, just $1.25 for the set. I really had my heart set on colored class so I decided for that price I could afford to experiment with probably the easiest ever glass tinting technique!
You will need *Amazon affiliate links used
Some clear class object
Alcohol ink *This is a good mixing set: amzn.to/2rGPv9r or you can get smaller sets of the Ranger inks: amzn.to/2GeIYHF
"Rubbing" alcohol in a spray bottle (*I used 70% from the drugstore, grocery store or dollar store)
Small square of craft felt and q-tips for applying color *I make my own craft felt applicators but cutting up 9"x12" sheets of acrylic craft felt: amzn.to/2KkP2AF into 1" squares, you can also buy them but they are more expensive: amzn.to/2KkrNXp
*You might want rubber gloves, LAVA soap will remove all of the ink from your skin but your fingernails can get stained! amzn.to/2rEiGdm
Directions:
1. Wash the glass and then wipe it down with rubbing alcohol to remove any fingerprints.
2. On the underside of the dish (or inside of a jar or vase) dab or wipe on the ink using a small piece of craft felt. You can use a Q-tip to get into any nooks and crannies. If the color is too dark add some alcohol to the blending felt to dilute the color.
3. Let dry before displaying.
*You want to do this on the bottom or inside of the object because alcohol ink can have a dull look on the surface, this way the shiny class will be on the outside and the glass will appear to be colored all the way through. You can even put water in the jar or vase after it is colored, just take care when cleaning it but washing with a soft cloth.
This is not food safe and you really should hand wash these. If you change your mind about the color or want the glass to be clear again you can wash off the ink with alcohol.

So, I wanted to thank you for this dish idea for the brushes. I was getting ready to unnecessarily order a couple of Asian brush holders for the calligraphy brushes. I am SOOOO glad that I saw this before I did. These little ash trays and candy dishes are so readily available at places like the goodwill. I have been taking advantage of everyday household things for certain things. I have a couple of square what Ikea plates that I have been using as a mixing pallet for my watercolors. They are perfect, as one is a salad plate and the other is dinner sized. I know that I have some of these type of dishes packed away. I will love having them in my art room!! Thanks for the idea!

Will have to try this! Love it! My favorite way to rest wet paint brushes to dry is to slant whatever flat surface I am using (chop stick holder, dish with ridges) and elevate one side so the water runs away from the ferrule so the glue doesn't loosen. If I don't have one handy, I like to use poster tack on the side of my water container and push the paintbrush into it brush side down until dry. It also helps to keep the point in good shape.

Good idea. It brings to mind my efforts at dying anything and everything with good old Rit dye back in the hippie days of the '60's. What we couldn't tie dye simply got dunked into Rit baths, and I mean everything; sneakers, shoes, beads, purses, you name it, we dyed it. Surprisingly most stuff took the dyes really well but we expected nothing less back in those blissfull days of being crafty hippies with our tie dying, weaving, beading, macrame, and embroidering patches on our jeans. Enjoy those dishes and if the inks fade, try Rit!

CrossoverMagicX l it was fun in that young folks wanted to do all sorts of arts and valued teaching received from older artists. The back to the earth frame of mind had folks gardening and moving into rural areas. I remember sitting on a beach at Cape Cod stringing beads for simple necklaces and tourists asking to buy them. But, there were also very serious issues that demanded our involvement. Civil Rights for black folks meant that we stood alongside our black friends and getting abused and threatened by the racist people. Little girls were killed in a church bombing, kids trying to register black folks for voting were murdered, and the black leaders, Rev. King and Malcolm X among others were gunned down as was Bobby Kennedy. The draft for the Vietnam war meant that the young men were off to die in a war that we did not believe was something the US had any business fighting so we took to the streets in protest. I was tear gassed, spat on, had soldiers with loaded rifles pointed at us, machine guns on roof tops in Washington DC pointed down at us in a demonstration in 1971. It was the best and worst of times but it shaped me . My work years were spent doing jobs that would help people, teaching and nursing and lots of volunteer work, I have no hesitation in taking important issues to the streets in protest, and I love doing all sorts of art when my farm chores allow me the time. Yes, I went back to the Mother Earth. My now adult kids seem to have taken on many of these values as well, namely the involvement in the arts and politics and do not hesitate to take a stand on important issues with my grandchildren at their sides. But, make no mistake, those hippie years had a lot more struggles going on than is apparent in videos of Woodstock for instance.

I actually put the coban(the stuff that they wrap your arm after taking your blood. Just in case someone doesn't know) on lids to be able to open easier. It really works well. I use it for the lid on my glue sticks and so much more. I really hope this helps someone! Thank you so much for sharing this with us Lindsay they are so Beautiful! I don't have alcohol inks so thank you for the hint about sharpies.

This makes me want to run out to the antique stores...I don't know that I can resist. So easy and such pretty results, Plus you have a practical, useful item. Love it! And before I leave, I think I'll also hit the thrift shops; they nearly always have a bunch of cut glass items. Lotsa fun for very little money :D)

This is really cool, thank you! A while back I found a bunch of Daler Rowney ink on super clearance ($1.25 a bottle!) so of course bought all 45 of them! wheeeeee! :P But I'm totally hoarding them until I understand inks and can make the best use of them. This looks like a neat thing for the some of the glass at the back of my cupboards. Thank you!
I'll have to give this a go for my brushes. I'm forever chasing them all over the floor. I used to deal antiques and was a specialist in American hand-cut glass. Stuff you think is junk can turn out to be a retirement fund :-)

OMG Lindsay, I just bought a pair of those last night, they're called "slip-joint" pliers according to my packaging. Cool idea btw, I can see some v dull items from the charity shop becoming beautiful again!
Yeah it’s just pliers but slip joint is that middle where they slide and adjust. It’s correct either way. Good catch
@@joejones2847 Of my many pairs, none are 'just pliers', all were designed for a purpose. Those ones just replaced a lost set & happened to be still in my handbag LOL.

Thank you! Very timely as I have been collecting the little glass jars that OUI yogurt comes in and recently saw a picture of a small glass two tone vase which was also decorated with a few droplets of pearl paint..Now I can make them! (They will be individual small vases for a table setting.)

I literally just found this video after watching the blue dye/Elmer’s glue method and hated it. SO GLAD I found this video next, this is exactly the amount of transparency I’m looking for!!
What a fun idea. Just tried it on a little glass vase and it worked great. Why settle for boring old clear glass? They would look lovely on a shelf in a sunny location too.
Lindsay, thanks for the great video! Would this work for candle jars; i.e., would the alcohol ink, if used on the outside of the jarr, hold up to the heat of the candle inside the way using acrylic paint mixed with gel medium and then baked would?
I used this technique on several jars for a Halloween decoration. Impossible to do applying externally to anything cylindrical without special equipment. So I applied internally, it was still REALLY tough to get an even coating, took an entire bottle of ink for a mason jar & you have to really be careful with the way inks dry so quickly, because if you have a “line” where the inks dried & the adjacent glass didn’t get an even coat (or no coat at all) you’re going to have a problem. Trying to get even color is also hard because of the same issue, plus adding more ink over dried will “reactivate” it. But I managed to get a smooth, vibrant color on MOST of each jar, and was able to hide the imperfections. None of the jars turned out perfect, the alcohol looks like a sticky gunk build up in some places (especially around the opening & in the bottom of the jars). I didn’t seal them because they just don’t look great & I figured maybe some day I can redo the project.
I did manage to apply ink on the outside of one small glass bottle. DEFINITELY SEAL THEM. Water will ruin the inks even if they’ve been fine for years.
And as far as sealer, I don’t even know what I’d use because anything water based or solvent based will screw up the ink.
Also, I used the ranger inks as well.

I had to try this ASAP, so I did. For some reason I couldn't get it to work. I resorted to using alcohol markers worked great!
that's good to hear, as I only have alcohol markers & plain Isopropyl Alcohol & was trying to come up with a plan :)

A question I've had about the blending felts, whether for alcohol inks or other pad inks - Are the felts washable / reusable or are they a one time toss item?
One time use but you can make 100+ from a 9x12 sheet of white acrylic felt or use felt scraps from other crafts

I don't have an alcohol spray ink and I don't recommend spraying alcohol ink plus I think it would be too diluted

Hello Lindsay, I don't know if you knew this, but the greenish/yellow dish with the holes that had the pencils sticking out of, is a glass floral frog for doing flower arrangements. But you probably already knew that. Anyway I think it is really cool. So, can you do alcohol ink projects with sharpies? If so, it would be alot cheaper in the long run. Really pretty find you got. yep, I have several and my mother in law had a beautiful collection of colored ones for real, I only have one real colored one, itis great for holding dip pens as it is thicker.
How does this hold up outdoors? Can it be sprayed clear over?
It can! It may fade in harsh sunlight

What would you seal the glass with if you wanted it to stay that way? Is it water proof?
it is waterproof and for this use I wouldn't bother sealing it but if it was going to take a lot of wear and tear like glass beads, coaster, keychains etc I'd spray a coat of triple thick glaze by Krylon.

Maker sure it's not going to come in contact with food of someone mouth because it's not food safe. I think it would hold up on the outside of a glass tho.

Sure but it might be a bit patchy on a flat sheet price of glass or plexi
