The color of the Udbhava Lingam in the Kanteshwar temple at Kantavara in Karkala taluk changes three times a day.
The well-known Shiva temple Kanteshwar temple is situated at the Kanteshwar village of Karkala taluk of Udupi district, which is located in the foothills of the Western Ghats of the Karavalli amidst the beauty of nature. There is a belief that Lord Shiva resides in this village as a result of the penance done by a sage named Ambarisha in Kantavara to destroy the offspring of demons here. In addition, Parvati devi also resides here.
It is believed that this town got the name Kantavara because of the surrounding forest. Also, it is said that the name of Kanteshwar is derived from the Shiva temple here, which shines in the beauty of nature amid the serenity of the environment. Also, it is said that the name Kanteshwar came from the presence of Parvati with Shiva here, as Ishwara with Kanti. In this temple, which is one of the oldest temples, the Udbhava Linga of Shiva, the main deity here, changes its color three times a day, morning, noon and evening. Appears golden in evening. This linga may also be thought of as a metal by some but it is not any kind of metal but rather an udbhava linga which is a diamond. This temple complex is also very old. , and the architecture here appears to be Kerala style. People here say that there is no disappointment for the devotees who come here with pure mind and pray. The calm and cool environment around this temple is a haven of peace for the devotees. The temple is surrounded by lush greenery, full of hills and a beautiful view of the lake nearby. It increases the positive energy in the people who visit there. and also there is a mutt which is a branch of Shree Palimaru mutt Udupi.

ಕರಾವಳಿಯ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಘಟ್ಟದ ತಪ್ಪಲ್ಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯದ ನಡುವೆ ಕಂಗೋಳಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಸುಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಶಿವನ ದೇಗುಲ ಕಾಂತೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು ಉಡುಪಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಕಾರ್ಕಳ ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ಕಾಂತಾವರ ಗ್ರಾಮದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಕಾಂತವರದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂಬರೀಶ ಎಂಬ ಮುನಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ರಾಕ್ಷಸರ ಸಂತಾನವನ್ನು ನಾಶ ಮಾಡಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ ಮಾಡಿದ ತಪಸ್ಸಿನ ಫಲವಾಗಿ ಶಿವನು ಒಳಿದು ಈ ಗ್ರಾಮದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆನಿಂತ ಎಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಿದೆ, ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾರ್ವತಿಯೂ ನೆಲೆನಿಂತಿದ್ದಾಳೆ.
ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಕಾಡಿರುವ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ ಈ ಊರಿಗೆ ಕಾಂತವರ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಬಂದಿದೆ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರತೀತಿಯಿದೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಶಾಂತ ಪರಿಸರದ ಕಾನನದ ನಡುವೆ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯದ ಸೊಬಗಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಳೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಶಿವನ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾಂತೇಶ್ವರ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಬಂದಿದೆ ಎನ್ನಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವನ ಜೊತೆ ಪಾರ್ವತಿ ಇರುವುದರಿಂದ ಕಾಂತಿಯ ಜೊತೆ ಈಶ್ವರ ಎಂದು ಕಾಂತೇಶ್ವರ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಬಂತು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ.ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಹಳೆಯ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಾದ ಈ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ದೇವರಾದ ಶಿವನ ಉದ್ಭವ ಲಿಂಗವು ದಿನಕ್ಕೆ ಮೂರು ಬಾರಿ ಅಂದರೆ ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆ ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಜೆ ಮೂರು ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಣ್ಣ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವು ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆ ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯ ಬಣ್ಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರೆ ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನ ತಾಮ್ರದ ಬಣ್ಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಜೆಯ ಹೊತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿನ್ನದ ಬಣ್ಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಲಿಂಗವನ್ನು ಕೆಲವರು ಲೋಹ ಎಂದೂ ಭಾವಿಸಬಹುದು ಆದರೆ ಇದು ಯಾವುದೇ ರೀತಿಯಾದ ಲೋಹವಲ್ಲ ಬದಲಾಗಿ ಉದ್ಭವ ಲಿಂಗವಾಗಿದ್ದು ವಜ್ರಶಿಲೆಯಾಗಿದೆ.
ಈ ದೆವಾಲಯದ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಶಾಂತ ಮತ್ತು ತಂಪಾದ ಪರಿಸರವಿದ್ದು ಭಕ್ತರಿಗೆ ನೆಮ್ಮದಿಯ ನೆಲೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ದೇಗುಲದ ಸುತ್ತ ಮುತ್ತ ಹಚ್ಚ ಹಸಿರಿನಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ್ದು, ಬೆಟ್ಟಗಳಿಂದ ತುಂಬಿದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಮೀಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆರೆಯ ಸುಂದರ ನೋಟವೂ ಇದೆ. ಇದು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಭೇಟಿ ನೀಡುವ ಜನತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಧನಾತ್ಮಕ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಹತ್ತಿರವೇ ಉಡುಪಿಯ ಶ್ರೀ ಪಲಿಮಾರು ಮಠದ ಶಾಖೆ ಕೂಡ ಇದೆ.
