I already knew how to change this starter but, your video was so well layed out i decided to watch. Very well thought out and shot tutorials are far and few between. Keep up the good work.
Kevin, thank you so much for your comment! I appreciate the kind words and support - especially form an experienced mechanic as yourself. Happy Holidays -JD
Great video, it helped a lot. The dealer wanted $1200 to fix my starter. Watched your video and it took me about an hour and a half total. The 11mm wrench trick is a great idea
This video is amazing. Learned a ton about my car just watching it. I stupidity payed to have mine replaced. Now the idle is going wild.. the mechanic must have cracked the ccv hose. That's my next adventure. Always something. Thanks for the video.
This video was a huge help. One thing I will add that made this so much easier. A thin 7/16 combo ratchet wrench. I was struggling to get sockets/ratchet on the two main bolt holding the starter in. The shorter bolt on the starter was pretty easy to reach from the front, as shown in this video with a long extension, but it was also very tight wasn't wanting to break loose at the angle the extension is at. If you maneuver and wiggle the manifold around, you will find it is very easy to simply reach down and remove both of these main starter bolts with a small 7/16 or 11mm craftsman ratchet wrench. Also the gaskets on the manifold can be accessed by wiggling the manifold around to get access to the gaskets and I used a long zip tie, to keep it in place while I removed the gaskets. As the young man in the video mentioned, a small screwdriver did the trick but they were baked in there pretty good. Carefully work the gasket around with the small flathead screwdriver and eventually it will begin to peel out. Once it starts coming loose the rest of the gasket peels out fairly easily. I can't believe how easy this job was once I found this video and used the small ratchet wrench. No way this manifold needs to come out. Great video and thank you!!
Awesome tutorial! Hopefully someone will find this helpful: I was able to use a 7/16 closed wrench on that back bolt. Really hard to get a grip on it otherwise. Thank you so much for posting this, it made it a pretty straightforward repair!
For anyone who is willing to take on this task - it's not that hard. No special tools are required to get to the starter. BUT, my tip to you (from my personal experience) go and buy this this ratchet from Harbor Freight (3/8 In. Drive T-Bar With Flexible Ratchet ), it worked like a charm after unsuccessful tries with flex-head ratchet. This tool was recommended by another mechanic in one of the e90 starter replacement videos. Save yourself some time with a good preparation. Bolts on my 2009 335i Xdrive were E12, not E14 but it seems to vary by model/year, be ready with both sockets. Good luck!
Works! Just did this with an 09. Tips: keep magnets next to your tool, so you dont drop tools or screws. For the starter dilemma, i kept one hand on the 11mm flat wrench so it would not come off and a metal tube (floor jack handle) over the other end of the wrench to pry it loose initially. Worked perfectly. To get the cheap new aftermarket starter on I noticed that the original starter had a bevel around that circle that inserts into the starter so I grinded one onto mine. The front screw didn't line up so I used the long rear screw as a guide for the front screw hole, to make sure it lined up once I got to starter in there, and then I replaced that with the small screw and put the large screw into the back. ...Now off, to get my get a couple sockets that dropped in to the abyss of the engine bay.
Just replaced my starter with the help from your video! I was dreading having to do so much removal, not needing to fully pull out the intake manifold made my life so much easier! Might be a 2-year-old video, but it was a huge help!
Great video. Took 3.5 hours complete w clean up. Reused the bolts, but didn’t over tighten them. New intake seals was a great tip. Mahle brand. Starts super fast now. !!!
Great step by step. Only thing different I did was remove the tower bar on the driver side. Not sure if you un plugged the two rail plugs or not but I did to give me more room to move the manifold. Only took me 2 hours from pulling in to leaving. No issues. Hardest part is the actual starter removal and install but not that bad. Car starts faster now. Didn’t replace any parts except the starter bolts. Thank you very much!
This was extremely helpful and save me over $600. by doing it myself, I watched it several time and referenced it off my iPad once I got started. The most difficult thing was the bolt that was on the backside by the transmission, after several attempts with every type of ratchet, swivel and extension i resorted to a box wrench that actually fit over the stud and allowed me enough room to loosen the bolt and still get my hand on the wrench giving me enough room to work, once i accomplished that it was all down hill, but i couldn't have done it without the video provide. thanks for taking the time to produce it was a lifesaver.
Was your car cranking slow/weak before the starter went? When I start my 328i the crank feels weak like if the car wasn't gonna start and I'm wondering if I should replace the starter before it leaves me stranded.
Starter usually goes out at around 130,000 miles. If it cranks slow/jumpy.. you should look into getting it replaced before you get stranded. Replacing it yourself wouldnt take more than 2 hours, taking your time.
Hi JD. I have a 2007 328i station wagon. I had the same issue after troubleshooting, etc. I followed your step by step approach and it worked like a charm. Thank you for posting and saving me a carload of cash.
Thank you very much for helping me replace the starter by myself with limited tools! However, the car now starts but cuts immediately. Any suggestions as to why?
Never mind I figured it out, in a hurry at dusk I left oil pressure sensor under far left side of manifold. Didn’t break it but caused vacuum leak into manifold.
Thanks to this video I saved ATLEAST 1000$ 🙏 Ordered the parts I needed, everything came out to 125$ .. waiting on it to come in, then it's all about work 💪
I have a 2004 BMW 325ci/convertible. I had to put the top down manually (long story) and now want to reconnect the motor ability. I cannot find anything at all about how to do this and I thought you may know. Thank you! Holly
I had a little trouble with getting the bolt out in the back, like you stated the E14 wouldn’t fit on and with the 11mm wrench I ended up stripping it. Any idea on how to get it out ?
Hey wanted to say you so much for taking the time to make this video. Did my starter tonight and it went really smoothly and alot easier than I thought! Appreciate it!
Great video. Saved me some time on my 08 E90 sedan. One caveat for others who are doing this procedure: Be careful to get the correct bolt when removing the top starter bolt. You're essentially going by feel, because you can't really see behind the engine. There is a second E14 bolt back there in the same vicinity. It's a little higher and easier to get to than the starter bolt. It's one of the bolts that connects the transmission to the engine, and it's torqued to hell and hard to remove. Don't remove that one. Reach lower to find the starter bolt. Don't ask how I know. Thanks for the video, JD.
Did you have any issues removing the starter bolt? I started trying to remove that bolt with an 11mm wrench which started to strip the bolt. I ordered an e14 wrench and took an attempt at the bolt again, but seems super tight and hard to get loose. I am scared I will strip the bolt again... any suggestions??
@@xdoutrex Make double sure you're on the correct bolt. If using an e14 wrench, it should fit tightly -- no way to strip it, IMO. Use something to get more leverage -- some type of extension. I used the two box wrench trick: ua-cam.com/video/SDI4j1LgqV4/v-deo.html

You only removed the negative terminal from the battery. Does this mean the car will have power to not loose the saved states? I am talking about need to redo the radio code. I think that is all that security measures that gets trigger from it not having power. Am I right and does this means I do not need to connect a battery trickle charger?
Once the battery is disconnected I believe the car has zero power...the computer may have a tiny backup battery, but I doubt it. I had to drive the car about 100miles after doing this to reset all the sensors and what not.
Your shortcut is great! A lot less stuffs to remove to get at the starter. It encourages me to go ahead and replace the starter myself. Thanks for the great video!
I have a bmw turns the damper with the starter, and has already tried another battery and with jumper. My bmw 328i 2010. Remove the multi channel run and lower the spark plug but I see that the damper gets hard the starter the coals look good. How hard should the crankshaft be?
Awesome tutorial but ran into a problem. Reassembled and car cranks but won’t start. ½ power symbol and codes for injector 1-4 p0201-0204. Willing to pay for suggestions. Seems like I screwed up a connector or failed to connect something.
Awesome video man. However after i installed my starter, the car started, but with a rough idle. Couldn't even rave when i hit the gas peddle. I figured i left something disconnected. Any ideas why that might be so?
@@JDCarsChannel yes, now it wont even start. It cuts power at startup, like lights and all go off for 2 secs, makes a click sound, than power back on, but wont start. Im hopping its just a fuse blown. Might have to take it into a shop. Dreading the price though. Lol
Thanks for the video. I just completed (maybe... haven’t started it yet). Closed the trunk after disconnecting the battery. Have to try folding down the seat or jumping it long enough to unlock. Anyway, I had a hard time with the bracket under the intake and then getting the back bolt out on the starter. I ended up getting it with a flex ratchet.
It did start, by the way. The '08 has a hidden key hole under the trunk lid so it wasn't hard to open the trunk. I think the '09 and forward models don't have the key option. Back on the road - thanks again! Oh yeah, one of the hardest things is fitting the battery compartment back together! Still don't have that completed.
So I did this and my cars saying reduced power and running really hot. I left the airbox out not realizing there was a airflow sensor on it and it got rained on a bit. Could that be what's causing the reduced power?
Hey jd my car starts up perfectly when it's cold then when I drive around for about an hour or more and shut it off she doesn't restart if I need it to ride then ..I have to wait about 15-20 minutes then she starts up again ..I was thinking it may be something with the key but I can unlock and lock everything perfectly the battery is new in both the key and car .. so idk ..my last thing is the stater .. it doesn't click its silent like there's no power getting to it .. I did look at the terminals today after I got home and they look to be rusty which is weird because water doesn't get down there at all ..at least it's not supposed to be wet there .. maybe someone wet the engine and water ended up getting over the terminals and causing this issue I now have ..
Great video! It helped a lot! Thank you so much for putting this together! It helped a lot! 👍👍 Boy, getting the top bolt out of the starter was not easy!
@@JDCarsChannel makes sense, thanks for the video, made the job easy! What did you do to reach/remove the last two intake manifold gaskets? The two farthest from the front, there is barely any room with those two lol
I second that. They break easy and the car idles like crap if you have a leak. They are also expensive ($100+) and have some sort of a heating coil so you can't just replace with rubber hoses.
My starter is not coming out after removing the bolts. Think it is the corrosion. I have tried spraying WD 40, and prying with a flathead. Could the teeth be stuck to the flywheel? If not what else should I do, if someone can pls suggest
Im looking this video because my car right now at BMW service dealer and they just told me to change starter kit around $1,300+ 😓 I declined the operation first to figure it out what the best option..
possible but not likely, but you could replace it to be sure(easy access)...unless you were thinking of the solenoid, that's more likely, but if that needs to be replaced, might as well just replace the whole starter...if you hear clicks, usually the starter is trying to engage but the solenoid is not...if you don't hear anything, then usually the starter seized up(all accessories should be working)...another problem are the grounding straps that can become brittle and fray which may give you a false positive that it's the starter...check this by connecting only the black neg cable of jumper cables to the chassis and engine(usually oil filter housing)...then try to start the vehicle...if it does start, then it's a grounding issue(check all straps and possible disconnections in wiring); if it still doesn't, then you know it's most likely the starter(again all the accessories should be working no matter what)
I wish I had watched this video before I did take off the whole manifold to replace the starter. That was nightmare to disconnect a few plastic pipes under the intake manifold. Removing the studs is the best way. Nice job. One request have you done the oil pan gasket replacement? Can you post oil pan gasket replacement diy? It seems the short cut is lower the subframe instead of disconnecting from suspensions.
Just got an issue with my 390. It was sitting out in the heat so I’m not sure if it’s the starter or relay. Battery seems to be working fine as all the lights and everything is on but just won’t start. Any suggestions? Please and thank you.
I NEED HELP I have a 2006 bmw 330i the night before and ever since I bought it has always turned on properly , I replaced a taillight on the passenger side and the next day morning when I went to start the car it didn't start but all power was working such as radio windows and cluster , when i went to my trunk to disconnect the battery I saw that water got in thru the taillight which leaked water on to the battery in the trunk. car is a manual , do u think its a fuse that got shorted? bc it really cant be the starter if it was good yesterday
The problem could be a number of things... fried battery, shorted out power distribution plate, or other electronic malfunction. It's hard to pinpoint it without seeing the car.
+JD Cars my n52 328 just died on me today, i think it was the starter, the engine is not turning over when i try to start it. all lights are working fine so i dont think it is the battery but cant completely rule it out. when i try to start there is a click but nothing after that. was this what happened to you?
long story short, it was the starter, i tried to replace it myself, using an e14 wrench for that last bolt on the starter. however i stripped the bolt on the starter. very disappointing. had to send it to the mechanic anyway but still saved $300 on labor so it wasnt a wasted effort, thanks for the great video
@@nickf1724 not sure what happened but you can't strip an e14 bolt using an e14 wrench. Everything works out if you have an E14 wrench for the rear bolt
Just had a shop put a starter on, now the car is showing misfire cylinder 1 so we put coil, plugs and now a injector, still showing misfire, I think the shop fucked something up.
Hey man im a big fan of yours and i could use your help! I also replaced my starter and the car starts great now but after i start it the whole car shakes for about 15 seconds before it settles. What could be the problem?
Man, my 08 328xi suddenly wont start, i push the button and hear a rrrr, rrrrr, rrrrr noise. No crank no start. Could it be my starter? Or where should I start 😫
I have a 2008 328i and I am not certain it is the starter. When I push the button to start, my car electronics turn on, but it doesn’t want to crank. No clicks, nothing. I replaced my positive battery cable and had the battery tested. AAA told me the battery was fine and that it most likely was not the alternator. Am I having a starter issue or something else?
An 11 meter wrench? My, that's a big one. I didn't realize you could remove the intake studs. That would make things a lot easier. That's a good tip for anyone doing this repair. You also need to be careful of the brittle hoses under the intake manifold because they crack easily, make the car idle like crap and cost more than the starter.
What was the tool needed to remove the studs again? I may have to do this soon. I know I can watch the video again just figured I can ask and have it written. Thanks

Hm... did you replace the intake gaskets??
@@JDCarsChannel yes, now it wont even start. It cuts power at startup, like lights and all go off for 2 secs, makes a click sound, than power back on, but wont start. Im hopping its just a fuse blown. Might have to take it into a shop. Dreading the price though. Lol
@@umufella Any luck?
@@MrHavingfun68 yes, so i just one loose connection after re installing. pain in the butt!
@@umufella what was the loose connection? one of the battery connections?
Thanks for the video. I just completed (maybe... haven’t started it yet). Closed the trunk after disconnecting the battery. Have to try folding down the seat or jumping it long enough to unlock. Anyway, I had a hard time with the bracket under the intake and then getting the back bolt out on the starter. I ended up getting it with a flex ratchet.
Glad to help! Smart idea with the flex ratchet!
It did start, by the way. The '08 has a hidden key hole under the trunk lid so it wasn't hard to open the trunk. I think the '09 and forward models don't have the key option. Back on the road - thanks again! Oh yeah, one of the hardest things is fitting the battery compartment back together! Still don't have that completed.
stripped the back bolt on starter, using an 11mm wrench... any tips?
Oh no...yikes. You could try vice grips, but that could make it worse.
Get a 10mm an hammer it on the bolt until it grips and loosen
@@ledrxgz7173 absolutely no room to get a hammer back there
@Ben Clark did you ever get it fixed and how?
So I did this and my cars saying reduced power and running really hot. I left the airbox out not realizing there was a airflow sensor on it and it got rained on a bit. Could that be what's causing the reduced power?
Yes, I would reinstall the airbox and sensor. Then reset all fault codes and see if it still reduces power
As soon as I saw you using the lawn mower to pull in the car I said "I like this guy" ;-)
Hahahaha sometimes you gotta get creative with the lawn mower
Yes, it sounds like an electrical issue for sure. I would check over all of your fuses and have someone scan the computer for errors.
@@JDCarsChannel fixed it.. main fuse for relay was going out slowly ..
Can I perform this same repair on a 2011 328xi? thanks in advance!
Yes! Of course!
Are u able to access from underneath or no
very clean video (no drama there!). You got to the point. Very much appreciate that
Glad you liked the video!
The hell is BMW doing making all these components from plastic?
Because race car duhh LOOL
Merc , Audi , and volkwagen does it also g ..
They are all doing it. But wont last as long
Rightt 😢
They try to make it look fancy for the ones that like to buy the overpriced brand
Great video! It helped a lot! Thank you so much for putting this together! It helped a lot! 👍👍 Boy, getting the top bolt out of the starter was not easy!
Hey man. How do you take the negative line off the battery????
I unscrewed the bolt but that stuff is still fitted on there
Sounds like its stuck.. try loosening it with a rubber mallet
I'm about to do this job tomorrow on my 328, do you need a torque wrench for the manifold bolts? Or just get them snug?
Ideally, you'll want a torque wrench to evenly torque them
@@JDCarsChannel makes sense, thanks for the video, made the job easy! What did you do to reach/remove the last two intake manifold gaskets? The two farthest from the front, there is barely any room with those two lol
Great video - check your PCv hoses while you in there and be very careful they get bridle and break easily
Thanks for the tip!
I second that. They break easy and the car idles like crap if you have a leak. They are also expensive ($100+) and have some sort of a heating coil so you can't just replace with rubber hoses.
Nice job, and thanks for posting.
Should have did a before trying to start and after replacing the stator bro
My starter is not coming out after removing the bolts. Think it is the corrosion. I have tried spraying WD 40, and prying with a flathead. Could the teeth be stuck to the flywheel? If not what else should I do, if someone can pls suggest
Any tips for getting the back bolt out on Starter I’m having trouble been trying to get it out for 2 hours
Use a thin ratchet box wrench
Well done video, very helpful in assisting my DIY repair!
can you do this with n52v
Thank you. This video helped me a bunch. Job done.
Im looking this video because my car right now at BMW service dealer and they just told me to change starter kit around $1,300+ 😓 I declined the operation first to figure it out what the best option..
Try doing it yourself! You got it!
Is it possible the starter relay component be the issue also?
possible but not likely, but you could replace it to be sure(easy access)...unless you were thinking of the solenoid, that's more likely, but if that needs to be replaced, might as well just replace the whole starter...if you hear clicks, usually the starter is trying to engage but the solenoid is not...if you don't hear anything, then usually the starter seized up(all accessories should be working)...another problem are the grounding straps that can become brittle and fray which may give you a false positive that it's the starter...check this by connecting only the black neg cable of jumper cables to the chassis and engine(usually oil filter housing)...then try to start the vehicle...if it does start, then it's a grounding issue(check all straps and possible disconnections in wiring); if it still doesn't, then you know it's most likely the starter(again all the accessories should be working no matter what)
How long did this take you in real time
what do i do if the top bolt is stripped, and even an extractor set won’t help me? 😭😭
Try Gear Wrench bolt biters
Great job bro !🔥
I wish I had watched this video before I did take off the whole manifold to replace the starter. That was nightmare to disconnect a few plastic pipes under the intake manifold. Removing the studs is the best way. Nice job. One request have you done the oil pan gasket replacement? Can you post oil pan gasket replacement diy? It seems the short cut is lower the subframe instead of disconnecting from suspensions.
Sorry you didn't see the video sooner! I will probably be doing the oil pan gasket in the near future. I will try to go the shorter route.
Just got an issue with my 390. It was sitting out in the heat so I’m not sure if it’s the starter or relay. Battery seems to be working fine as all the lights and everything is on but just won’t start. Any suggestions? Please and thank you.
Sounds like it could be the starter if the battery is fine
JD Cars yeah seems you might be right. It’s at the dealership getting looked at now 🤦🏾♂️
JD Cars not to mention it was also leaking oil
Where do you get the new bolts for the starter ? Since you can’t use the same ones
Link in description
Correction: your car has the n52 engine not n54..n54 is the one used on 335i
Hussein Shahin yeah lol I didn't notice I said that until after posting this...
Muzigi degistir lutfen. ;-)
Hussein Shahin how can you tell if it's a 52 or 54 ? Because I have a bmw328i 2008
Hussein Shahin nevermind so it's a n52
Correction*m54
I am to the point where all my bolts are off my starter and the feeds nothing holding it but it's not letting free? Why?
Thanks I do the job in my cars little difficult when remove the screw one front other back
Excellent presentation 👏
Thank you! Cheers!
How long did the job take you
So how did you access the top bolt? It does not look like there is easy access to that bolt.
It is certainly not easy, but I would recommend a low profile ratchet wrench.
forget the ratchet wrench. use an e14 wrench.
I NEED HELP I have a 2006 bmw 330i the night before and ever since I bought it has always turned on properly , I replaced a taillight on the passenger side and the next day morning when I went to start the car it didn't start but all power was working such as radio windows and cluster , when i went to my trunk to disconnect the battery I saw that water got in thru the taillight which leaked water on to the battery in the trunk. car is a manual , do u think its a fuse that got shorted? bc it really cant be the starter if it was good yesterday
btw it made no noises when I tried starting it, no clicking no nothing please answer I'm going crazy
The problem could be a number of things... fried battery, shorted out power distribution plate, or other electronic malfunction. It's hard to pinpoint it without seeing the car.
That happened to me and my mechanic replaced the starter and some fuses. But it could be the power distribuger
@@mariozarazua81 a distriburger sounds good right about now!
+JD Cars my n52 328 just died on me today, i think it was the starter, the engine is not turning over when i try to start it. all lights are working fine so i dont think it is the battery but cant completely rule it out. when i try to start there is a click but nothing after that. was this what happened to you?
Yes, that is exactly what happened to me. Give the starter replacement a shot!
long story short, it was the starter, i tried to replace it myself, using an e14 wrench for that last bolt on the starter. however i stripped the bolt on the starter. very disappointing. had to send it to the mechanic anyway but still saved $300 on labor so it wasnt a wasted effort, thanks for the great video
@@nickf1724 not sure what happened but you can't strip an e14 bolt using an e14 wrench. Everything works out if you have an E14 wrench for the rear bolt
Phenomenal video. You’ve earned a subscriber good sir
I used an e16 to take it off I struggled for 3 days with the e14
Hey great video! I'm about to put in my new starter and am curious how long it took you to do from start to finish. Thank you!
Thanks! The process takes about 4 hours with proper tools. Best of luck with your replacement!
@@JDCarsChannel It went great, easy peasy thanks to your video!
great video! was hoping you showed how you pulled the back bolt from the firewall
Why does my bmw need allen wrench to take the starter out 😢
Just had a shop put a starter on, now the car is showing misfire cylinder 1 so we put coil, plugs and now a injector, still showing misfire, I think the shop fucked something up.
Hey man im a big fan of yours and i could use your help! I also replaced my starter and the car starts great now but after i start it the whole car shakes for about 15 seconds before it settles. What could be the problem?
Sounds like a rough idle... check out my VANOS video!
Man, my 08 328xi suddenly wont start, i push the button and hear a rrrr, rrrrr, rrrrr noise. No crank no start. Could it be my starter? Or where should I start 😫
Sounds like it could be your starter or your battery. Always check your battery first
I've watched nearly all your video's im curious if all these mods you do will work for an 2011 BMW 328I.And is the wiring still the same? Thanks.
Yup, almost everything is the same! The 2011 is the facelifted version of the E90, but it is still the same car.
I couldn't tell you for sure... but it sounds like it could be the starter.
What was your fix?
An 11 meter wrench? My, that's a big one. I didn't realize you could remove the intake studs. That would make things a lot easier. That's a good tip for anyone doing this repair. You also need to be careful of the brittle hoses under the intake manifold because they crack easily, make the car idle like crap and cost more than the starter.
Yup removal of the studs makes it a lot easier! Definitely need to be careful of the hoses!
What was the tool needed to remove the studs again? I may have to do this soon. I know I can watch the video again just figured I can ask and have it written. Thanks
E6, its a female torx bit
Great job my friend you made this job at ease thank you
hello i have a 2006 525xi bmw is it the same method for my car??
Yes it is!
You still have the car? And how was it with that starter from Amazon?
Unfortunately I sold her. That starter worked super well for my entire ownership
