      One of the IGN reviewers beat Hades after 30ish runs, I got lucky on my 30th. Though I will have to say the pierced butterfly is a decent way to practice a more deliberate, careful play style

Skelly's tooth is, technically, just a one time healing item. Nice in a clutch if you're low on death-defiances as you reach Styx and it's unlikely Athena's gonna pop up to give you one back.... I've not actually seen how equipping a god's keepsake affects the Styx tunnel rewards though, so it may in fact be more beneficial to use Athena's to have a chance at getting back a death defiance if your health bar is big enough.

For Athena, maybe its a good decision, but if you know that in the next location you will not survive without a death defiance, then can you really risk not getting the replenished boon from Athena?

    To me, the Pierced Butterfly is a training tool, not a serious tool for heated runs. The 20-30% damage it's worth... isn't actually that much since it's additive, not multiplicative. If you've already stacked +200% damage on your primary damage source (not even a little bit hard to do), then that 30% is really only 10% more damage than you would have had otherwise.
    That said, using it early on to _learn_ how to play without getting hit is a critical part of learning the game and getting better at it.
    Still, later on... **ahem** _much_ later on, which I won't go into because spoilers... there's another keepsake that gives much, much bigger permanent (per run) benefits that _don't_ go away when you take it off in Styx in favor of a defensive keepsake.
    The keepsake in question can pretty reliably more than double your total damage output and give serious defensive boons as well... so don't just hear "butterfly = good" and never use anything else. There are times when it's absolutely _not_ the best keepsake to take, plus it limits you from seeking specific builds by taking god keepsakes to guarantee shots at the boons you want (and to ease prophecy clearing, which gives much faster progress than grinding!)
    There's also something to be said for taking the Plume to train yourself how to clear quickly, which can sometimes be a better strategy in certain battles with tons of damage flying around and not that much ability to avoid it. Most of Styx falls into that category for me, especially the tiny rooms, where it's often much better to just ignore damage, even ongoing poison damage, and finish the room in a second or two, than to make three or four runs to the antidote fountain.

  • @TheNitroG1
    @TheNitroG1 3 роки тому +87

    I know this post is long but it's got some really good tips this video fails to mention.
    I disagree completely with the butterfly charm advice, sure it's nice to have that bonus before you get all the other charms. but changing out your charm at the end of every section is key to obtaining legendary and duo boons which are some of the best attacks in the game. If you also have the ability to re-roll the exits to each encounter you can ensure you get more boons in a run. At first I recommend starting with coin purse seeing what boons you get through the first section then picking the second boon based off of what duo boon or legendary boon you are trying to obtain. the codex can be quite helpful in this if you have the upgrade that tells you what boons each god has available and the prerequisite boons needed to get them. For instance you can't get the boon that causes jolted before you have an attack that does lightning damage. Can't have a boon that spreads hangover before you have an attack that causes it. ect.
    Like for instance I had a run once where I was favoring Zeus and Dionisius but also Demeter, I ended up with combo runes from Demeter/Zeus that made it so the jolt effect of my lightning never wears off which ended up being a ton of passive damage. I also ended up with my festive fog clouds causing lightning strikes and my bloodstones sitting after the fog ends also had lightning strikes. Demeter also has an upgrade where not having blood stones in your inventory increases your damage and reduces the damage you take. So I would just throw them out at the start of every encounter and let them do all the work.
    Artemis is also really good at improving other boons. her combo with Demeter is especially good, if you can also get the combo with Poseidon that does mirror copies of your casts...that becomes insane boss damage very quickly. I've had up to 10 crystals all firing at the same time. it becomes obvious why almost every boss has invulnerable states when you do like 6000 damage in 4 seconds. Also pressure points is a good choice in any build as it lets you critical any damage you do.
    It should be noted that darkness, gems and keys are terrible rewards for an encounter and should be avoided or re-rolled when possible. Money is ok if you are low but often if I have a re-roll I re-roll the money too. If possible you want every encounter to result in a boon, pom of power, the yellow potion (once you have the upgrade that makes them give you a random +1 to boon) or Charon's shop (so long as you have 150 gold minimum). Also the first demi-god the guy with the rock, should be skipped unless you are low on money. He gives a fine amount of darkness so at the beginning it is fine but once your mirror is full, darkness becomes nearly worthless in a lot of ways. It is also very easy to farm later on in the game by just turning the heat down to 0 and using the hidden aspects of whatever weapon has extra darkness collection. As every boss will drop a lot of darkness as a reward and you should have the mirror upgrade that heals you based on collected darkness these runs should be exceptionally easy once you have the hidden aspects of a weapon unlocked.
    also worth mentioning a Charon's well run can be quite nice. when you equip the charm that gives you more encounters before the upgrades wear off you can end up chaining multiples together though it can be a little on the random side it's a great way for beginners to get through hades at some point.
    There are certain sections of the game where the weapon upgrade boons (hammer) appears quite frequently. When it does not appear if you have the mirror ability that lets you re-roll the rewards you can often force it to be the weapon upgrade, one such area is the start of the 3rd section "Elysium". Sometimes you won't get to choose the weapon upgrade as the reward for the first encounter of this section. but if you re-roll one of the exits it comes up quite often. The final shop Charon has (right before hades) will many times have an anvil that upgrades your weapon a 3rd time...this should ONLY be bought if you don't like the weapon upgrades you have gotten before that point as you will lose one and gain two.
    one final tip, if you want to have a really good run start with either a Dionisius boon or a Poseidon boon and then get the other as soon as you can. (the boons you pick need to be main attacks like drunken flourish and flood shot ect) they have a combo boon that makes all boons you find from there on epic or better.

And thinking about it I do agree with the thought that you generally don't get hit too much early on so it's just a benefit.

    I’d adjust the tip “plan your boons for facing Hades” to be more “choose boons with a plan”. You could get a build that is brutal against a single enemy, but leaves you to being overwhelmed by multiple foes in Elysium and the Temple of Styx. Be conscious of whether a boon should go on the attack, special, dash, or whether it should be a supporting boon. This leads me to why I don’t believe the pierced butterfly is the best keepsake. I will often use olympian god keepsakes to set up builds.
    For instance, when using Zeus’ aspect of the Shield of Chaos, I start with Zeus’ keepsake so I can get Thunder Flourish for my special. From there I’ll snag Demeter or Poseidon for the attack if they pop up, I might also grab Aphrodite. I like these because of they have higher damage boosts, but their secondary effects also help with crowd control. I prefer Demeter and Poseidon because of the Duo boons I can get with them and Zeus. For the dash, I usually prefer Poseidon or Athena, maybe Dionysus.
    So while there is the bare bones of a plan. Starting with an olympian’s keepsake, I can set the foundation for the build. The build is flexible so I can go different directions depending on the RNG of the run so I don’t screw myself over waiting for the perfect boon, although using another olympian’s keepsake in Asphodel can help if there are two key boons to a build. For instance, using Chiron’s aspect for the bow, I like getting Artemis for the special and Aphrodite for attack. Their Duo boon adds +150% crit damage to weak inflicted foes. Attack sets up weak and the targeting to then unleash a volley of arrows that can crit. I might even use Poseidon’s keepsake at this point because his splash dash or flood shot is great for creating breathing room for the bow. Poseidon isn’t typically useful against bosses, but since the bow is so slow it can be easy to be overwhelmed by large groups of enemies and end your run before making it to Hades. However, the setup on the attack and special will tear through Hades.
    Also, another comment about the pierced butterfly, there are certain weapons it pairs better with. I would generally suggest avoiding it if you are using the sword or fists, since those are very melee oriented and hard to completely avoid damage unless you are playing very cautiously and slowly. At which point, consider using the olympian keepsakes to set up a build. Keepsakes that work well being swapped in for the final areas are Lucky Tooth/Spiked Collar (depends on your life totals and how many death defiances you have left) or Broken Spearpoint/Evergreen Acorn. Broken Spearpoint is better for quick damage that chips away at your health (ie Champion longbows shooting 3 shots or Snakestone lasers). It’s not super great for the Hades fight because often times his attacks happen too far apart, unless you are still struggling with his laser attack. The Evergreen Acorn is nice because it will (when maxed out) ignore damage from the first five hits you take.
    I would like to add as another tip for defeating Hades is to learn his attack patterns. Learn when you can attack and when you can dodge. The better you get at this, the more damage you will do and the less you will take.

  • @SJNaka101
    @SJNaka101 3 роки тому +10

    Just a little correction, no big deal: the metagame buffs like the mirror and keepsakes are "rogue-*lite*" elements, not "rogue-like" elements. The rogue-like elements are things like permadeath, randomly or procedurally generated rooms/rewards, and progression being more related to how good/quickly you can play the game rather than how strong your character gets. The rogue-lite elements are the ones that actually make your character stronger across all your runs and give you a sense of progression because your character gets stronger and you're filling out a list.

    I've been a little disappointed by the butterfly even at full stack 30% is not that much considering the "opportunity cost" of having no other trinket for the whole run. I prefer the second to last trinket I think it's one of the most powerful ones because it works for every build and you don't have to worry about performance in every room. You may end up with way for bang for your buck than the butterfly.

    Pierced Butterfly alternative : focus on Dionysus to get the Strong Drink Boons. It will give you 3-5% damage bonus per fountain you found... so if you lucky enough to get it on Tartarus, then you can have the average of 20% damage bonus while having full health before facing Hades.
    Then focus on Damage Reduction Boons (Dionysus, Aphrodite). Use the Skull Earring on the last stage for additional 30% dmg bonus while your Hp is below 40%, combine it with alot Centaur Hearts if you prefer that (I once have 430ish of Hp, so the threshold of the Skull Earring can be easily achieved).

    Note to everyone that i highly recommend to play as aggresive as possible. But not as aggresive to the point that you tanked the damages. But be quick and fast. Hit enemy aggresively and when you see the enemy telegraphed their attacks, quickly dodge it. That's why i prefer boons that grant "near miss" evasion bonus like Zeus had. I recommend being aggresive because when you play too passive, it tends to overwhelm you because there are a lot of going on and its best to quickly purge all the threats ahead before they even do any of it to you.

    Your 1st point is super subjective. I, and a lot of other people, learn faster by getting in the action and seeing the mob/boss' patterns. No better way to do that than get in their face and see what they do about it. Will you take damage more at 1st? Of course you will. But if you actively try and learn from these encounters you will progress in skill far more quickly than playing back and "safe."

    • @LegacyGamingUS
      @LegacyGamingUS  3 роки тому +3

      You're right, it is subjective, but that's the whole point. Dash-based builds or more aggressive builds are one of the biggest culprits behind players not reaching the "end-game". It's not that they're not good, they 100% are, but you have to know what you're doing. It's the same concept with games like Dead Cells where overly-aggressive players with skill were rewarded while overly-aggressive not so skilled players ended up dead. It's a fine line I'll give you that, and you're right, nothing replaced trial and error and learning, but for me, that only makes sense after you spend the time learning the game inside and out. It's a different set of opinions that's all, I don't think one is better than the other, just different. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the video.

Pick a boon you want to start, coin purse for act 2 and most importantly throw on the broken spearpoint for act 3 and either that or the extra life for act 4 and it will save you a ton of trouble.

      yes, the butterfly simply doesn't add significant damage output (critical is generally better).

The broken spearpoint is useful to negate poison if you struggle to do any long range / area damage in the satyr tunnel.

      @@LegacyGamingUS you should also note there are combo boons that completely change the effects of certain attacks you have already collected. often times making a crappy boon suddenly excellent. A good example is how trash Demeter's cast boon is, those crystals only are good against things standing still...until you get the combo boon with Artemis that makes them last longer and track enemies faster. Get another combo boon with Poseidon that makes all your casts double and suddenly it's a boss melting game changer.

    Late to this video but as someone who's put in over 150 runs on multiple platforms, one major tip, like with any game, is LEARN ATTACK PATTERNS. People meme on dark souls and the like, for being hard, but those games heavily enforce pattern recognition. Monster Hunter is another prime example of pattern recognition. In Hades, knowing what enemies can do will help you avoid things. Even from offscreen sometimes. Knowing what enemy to prioritize in group fights can help a huge amount.

    A correction for the video - this is a rogue-lite game, not a roguelike one.

    • @Dead25m
      @Dead25m 2 роки тому

      It counts as both, same with Darkest Dungeon.
      They have enough aspects of a rougelike to be considered one.
      Your argument is probably the fact that you get upgrades that you keep, but that's only a part of what makes a rougelike and you don't need all the parts to be a rougelike.

      @@n_aniki Rougelike is equally correct though.
      Just because the game has perma-upgrades doesn't remove its status as a rougelike.

    I mean the butterfly is nice, but even if you manage to get 20-30% you have to weigh that against the more reliable items like the conch or even chaos egg which almost guarantee better boons.
    Even the hourglass can be pretty magnificent giving you anything from bounus damage to additional healing for upwards of 10 encounters for relatively cheap

    Few more mistakes I can think of:
    Not taking enough risks: sometimes, you are presented with a harder room with better rewards - it's better to take them. Even if you get substantially damaged for taking the risk, the reward helps to mitigate what you went through over time.
    Overblowing your cash: sometimes it's way too tempting to buy stuff from charon or his wells, but what you should be prioritizing are boons or upgrades that you need. Especially in styx, some of the stuff there are way valuable compared to the other shops.

    The biggest mistake I made would be the blade weapon upgrade. The one the give me +2 heal per hit is usually a terrible choice. And maxhealth is far more important than I expect. Probably because I'm more into utility than anything. I'm only on 16 heat, so I'm not sure how it would work in higher heat situation.

    • @TheNitroG1
      @TheNitroG1 3 роки тому

      I think you mean the spear upgrade that reduces hp by 50 but makes your secondary attack give you 2 hp per hit, "Excalibur" the blade weapon upgrade gives you a protective aura that slows down projectile attacks as well as more HP not less.
      it should be noted that the 2hp per hit is per enemy hit, per time hit, as well. So I have found that charging up the attack to throw it is the most effective way to heal with it. especially a pile of numbskulls. even better if you have the upgrade that makes it charge faster, hit a larger area, or continue 80% longer.
      if you hit a pack of 5 enemies twice you have healed for 20. using it against a single enemy is often not worth while. The spinning also clears out projectiles so it's great to use against spreaders if you don't have a deflect.
      to really make this weapon work, put on Cerberus collar to buff up your hp and collect centaur hearts until you have at least 100 to 120hp. (also mirror upgrades) I have found that for most runs having much over 150hp isn't needed. unless the pact is increasing enemy damage. It's a little bit of a challenge to find a good opportunity to charge up and throw the attack sometimes but if you can get it down it's basically a free win machine because you can always replace any HP you lose if you are careful.

    Honestly, I prefer the Pom Blossom keepsake just because I feel like the leveling up of my skills is what helps me increase my damage and strategy the most. It's probably because I'm one of those aggressive players trying to finish a run asap, and I do get some damage along the way

    • @TheNitroG1
      @TheNitroG1 3 роки тому +2

      If I use it I just use it at the end. the best way to generate damage in hades is to get Duo boons and legendary boons. If you get the upgrade that lets your codex tell you what boons each god has available it also tells you what boons you need to get the combo boons available. There is some nice stuff in there like converting Dionysus festive fog into a lightning storm and then later a blizzard if you add in Demeter's duo boon.
      So what I like to do i start with the coin purse and the mirror upgrade that lets you change your encounter rewards randomly. I re roll any exit that has Coins, Gems, Darkness, a key or centaur heart. (only one per exit deal with what you get)
      The point of this is to try and force more chances for a boon to come up, if you have a charm that summons a specific god like the wine cup it will happen almost for certain if you haven't collected a boon from that good since you equipped their charm.
      If you have a choice between a boon and a shop stop, unless you are low on health always go for the boon as you can always spend the money later on in the run. Also always check but very infrequently buy things from charon's well. Most upgrades are not worth it unless you have the hourglass equipped. unless you know your are facing a boss within 6 chambers, you need a quick heal or you are missing a death defiance charge (if your mirror talents are for multiple)

    The butterfly is okay, but i always think in doblouns so i got the purse of hypnos or sometimes i need the extra life for Hades so i take the collar of cerberus... It's mostly all depends on what you are to prioritize in the run rather than "play this way"

There's a chaos boon increasing dash-attack damage which i always want as well. As basic attack boon i like athena, aphrodite or artemis cause i love the crit. Deadly Dash, Support Fire, Hunter's Mark, Pressure Points, Strong Drink and Poseidon's Aid, Aphrodite's Aid, Dionysus's Aid or Artemis's Aid. Since i'm still not that good at the game and somewhat frequently have to use the lifesteal of my swirl to regain some of my hp i use the Pom Blossom instead of Pierced Butterfly
