In my efforts to find the roots of Arkansas Highlands (Ozarks and Ouachitas) music, I traveled to the Appalachians in hopes of visiting with a true Old Time music purist. As fate would have it, I ended up on Dwight Diller's front porch in West Virginia.. a long and fateful story for another post. From that multi-hour visit, we planned my return for a multi-day visit for banjo lessons and more importantly, the history of the the music that influenced the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains music.
Due to years of health issues, Dwight has practically disappeared from the Old Time music scene. I hope this post will reignite an interest in Dwight and his passion for the music.
This March, 2022 recording was my spontaneous request after a day of lessons and history. Before my visit, Dwight had rarely picked up the banjo or fiddle in the last few years, again dealing with health issues. What I saw, almost instantly, was a reawaking of the skills that so many sought from the 1970s through around 2012 when his health declined.
