I was recently looking for some comparisons between these so this video was quite helpful. I'm more inclined towards Franklin Library because, as you said, the translations and illustrations are different and I prefer the archaic texts, but Franklin Library does have a lot of leatherette books. Easton Press is more consistent with their great quality though. Beside the quality and value, the most important thing which it comes down to is translation and that is wholly subject to opinion.
    Thank you for the comparison.

I like how you tried to be as objective as possible with this review. Everyone has their own preferences and things they look for so I appreciate that you mentioned the pros and cons of the books of each publisher.

You shouldn't judge translations based on things like vernacular and the use of contemporary idioms etc. You have to research the translations; generally the quality is down to the translator, not the time of translation. The only time you should go for modern versions as a rule is when you are reading things where the book was written thousands of years ago (like Aurelius) and the old translations were based on an out of date understanding of the language.

Can't say that I agree. If a book was written to be for regular people, but the translation uses language that's no longer common, then it's reasonable that some people prefer a more modern translation.

Great review. I've wondered why Franklin books are cheap second hand, I guess it's because of the quality. Although I did purchase still sealed in plastic Crime and Punishment and Robinson Crusoe for $20, it's got the bookmark so supposedly it's leather. Not bad considering it's in the same price range as some of the B&N books. I do love that classic look of Easton Press and Franklin, but FS seems to have a better selection and I love the fact that they come with a slip case. Anyways I seem to be getting books at a rate I don't think I can keep up lol.

Regarding the translations, I totally agree.
It might simply be the fact that English isn't my day-to-day language - it's Dutch -, but a few Barnes and Nobles books that have been translated are very archaically translated and can be a nuisance to read at times.

My issue with going for editions is within translation. If one book is beautiful but of an unwanted translation I can’t find a reason to buy it. So I go by translation and then format and what I’ll end up with may not be completely uniform but I’m learning that I love the more interesting look of diversity rather than have expensive books I don’t want to read/reread ever again. 🤷🏼‍♀️

  • @mimimayhem
    @mimimayhem 2 роки тому +1

The Easton’s new leather bindings are just different because they’re thinned a lot. Thus of lower quality than the older ones.

The quality is different. I have both, but even though EP are my more expensive books, I have to be more careful with the BN. The gilding is constantly coming off, and the gilding on the cover is the same. I believe that there is a difference in the leather. Please correct me if I'm wrong! I'm not entirely that all of this is correct.

    • @oldjunkvet

I’m sorry my friend but Barnes and noble are FAR FAR cheaper and though they look fancy, the finish and materials aren’t in the same class at all. You’ll find out with time, but just consider how and of what the Easton press and old Franklin books are made.

Barnes and Noble Leatherbound Classics are bound in fake or faux leather called bonded leather, hence their cheapness. None of their illustrations are new, nor are the text editions which they print. The designs of their books are garish and distasteful, and the typography is appalling; the chosen fonts are questionable and are set extremely small. The paper quality is also very poor, as is the fake gold on the edges of the text block.

  • @wastelandpress

I'm a publisher by trade and always found it strange, maybe a little odd, that the presentation of the front and back matter is always so mediocre for the Beowulf edition. The Folio society's presentation of Beowulf is pretty good in the main text portion of the book (especially with the full page spread image on the smyth-sewn spine, which was very thoughtful in its presentation). However, the front and back matter typeset is clunky and there is an overage of "white space" (like a term paper composed on MSWORD). Why put all the effort in the presentation of the actual main text and not do the same for the front and back matter? From the entire perspective of production down to the typesetting, I would actually give a slight edge to Easton Press. The typesetting is consistent, the presentation is classic and even though The Folio Society has some flash, the product lacks consistency throughout. As a publisher it is important to be consistent with fontology and presentation and unfortunately, The Folio Society doesn't have that. As a side note, picking a quarter bound leather over a 100% bound, genuine leather book is like comparing curly maple lumber to curly maple plywood. Slipcase needed indeed.

Someday, when all books are digitized and no longer printed, these will be valuable museum pieces and collectors items. Franklin Library is already defunct. Easton Press will soon follow. Alas!

Hello Steven. New subscriber here. I came across your channel today, and am so glad I did.
I am looking for a family Bible and wanted to ask your recommendations for the top 3-6 luxury Bibles regardless of the price. I want to get two Bibles. One for the library with art and illustration and as big as possible. Another one for studying but, hopefully, with illustrations, maps and other features for someone who is very visual.
I am interested in the Cambridge Family Chronicle and wasn’t sure if there are other similar options from other publishers. I prefer heavier paper of 35-55 gsm. I’d also like a Bible with lots of illustrations or art illustrations/paintings in color or in black and white. 12 font or above. I was considering the Easton Press Rembrandt family Bible, as well as their Catholic Bible with has 1800+ pages and 250+ of illustrations. I don’t know if you recommend EP. It seems like there should be a Bible that is also an art book. One that has examples of Western Christian art but maybe that’s not available because of differences among Christian denominations. I am not sure. Art for me is not an idol and helps me with my faith.
I am also looking for a high quality study Bible with 10 font or above. Something that has the extensive options that Thomas Nelson has in his NLT large study Bible, except with more luxury features in terms of paper, sewn binding, spine... I don’t even know where to begin. Maybe one that’s not made in China, even though the ones I have seen from TN are actually well-made.
I am from Europe and we like to buy heirloom pieces for such important items, and what could be more important than the Bible. I have to say that $50-80 can get anyone some of the highest quality Bibles and it really isn’t necessary or maybe even logical to spend more, but I could afford it since I don’t want to update my iPhone, iPad and TV for the next couple of year. Anything you recommend would be very helpful and I appreciate it. Of course, anyone else in the comment section. If you have recommendations, please let me know. I have to say that I am a recent convert to Christianity. It took me 20 years of studying and debating… it was exhausting but my experience and the 900 pages of notes I have written will be shared with others and useful maybe one day as a published book. I am, obviously, not expecting anyone to do research for me, and all I wish to know is whether you have definite recommendations for publishing companies or Bible that you might consider high quality ones with illustrations.
