On Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays it’s also possible to get to Kirkwall from Aberdeen. The overnight Northlink service to Shetland, leaves Aberdeen at 5pm and stops at Kirkwall roundabout 11pm (ish) before carrying on to Lerwick.
Certainly cuts out a long drive! Another permutation is to use Orkney as a stepping stone to Shetland using the Northlink Kirkwall 'red eye' to Lerwick on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Did that a few years back to avoid putting my dogs in the awful kennels on the Aberdeen ferry.
Loved your video. Looks like a 'must do' trip!
It is!
Excellent video, and a great guide on how to get to and from Orkney 😀 And it's ALWAYS as calm as this...😉
I've not had a rough crossing yet (I'm tempting fate here), unlike the Minch!
very informative
Lovely shot of my mum's house in Stromness.
One of my favourite places in Scotland. Was back there last week.

Luckily, you had nice calm seas. When I did the Stromness crossing years ago as a teenager I was as sick as hell!
I've always been lucky on that crossing - but I've never taken it in the winter!
@@TravelObscurer I wouldn’t dare take it in winter. My crossing was in July!
There is no bus from Thurso to Scrabster at convenient times to catch the ferry
Is that one of the new SNP Calmec ferries....
😂😂😂😂😂😂
