- What's up UA-cam! In this video we demonstrate how to change the C4 Transmission Filter and Fluid on a 1966 Ford Mustang. This procedure applies to Mustang's produced between 1965 and 1969.
Our friend Andy own's this beautifully restored 1966 Mustang and we will be shooting many more videos with this car. The process to change the fluid and filter on the C4 transmission is very simple and straight forward as you will see.

You’re the 💣 bomb! Thanks for educating us on this project and process 🙏🏽🙌🏾❤️🇺🇸
my dad passed away june 1st 2020 and my two sisters and I have acquired his beautiful 1968 mustang. your video was a great tool for me to change transmission fluid for our 68 Mustang.
Very sorry for your loss. Happy to hear our video is helping you keep the memories alive and car on the road :)
A really informative video with excellent tips. Its has given me a lot of confidence to have a go with my own 66 transmissions. I hope you make some more.
Glad it helped! My buddy still has the car so maybe we can make some more content for it!
Keep the videos coming! I just bought a 69 mustang as my first car and will have to do maintenance myself so this video was extremely helpful!
Awesome! We'll be doing the shocks soon! Let us know what other guides would be helpful
Thanks dude you really helped with my 66 project look forward to more awesome content
Awesome! Enjoy the car! Glad it helped you out!
Very well done and thank you! I'm bringing a 66 convert back to road worthiness so this is very helpful.
Very well done. Complete but concise. Too many instructional video maker talk too much, or (rarely) not enough
Your daughter is so cute ☺️ 👍🏼🙏🏽🙌🏾❤️🇺🇸
Thanks for posting this video. It was very helpfull.
No problem! Glad it helped
Thanks for the video guys appreciate it!
No problem! Hope it helps
Loved it. Good video.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Your friend should have bought a transmission pan with a drain bolt. It makes the job cleaner and easier.
Always a good plan to swap them out! As little as he drives the car tho he'll get a lot of life out of it tho
Great video!
Thanks! Glad it helped you out 😁
Thank you guys I'll he doing this tomorrow on my 1966 mustang
Glad it helped!
Very clear! It seems like a easy task.... TX.
Glad it was helpful!
Great Chanel 👌🏻
Thanks :) we are doing our bestest
Hey,,, Good video. So, thanks.
Glad it helped!
super Video :)
Thanks!
Your girl has curls just like my granddaughter. They're both so lucky to have a much sought-after natural wave.
Nice Video! Did you fill all of the Lucas Transmission Fix in the transmission?? Thank you!
I asked Andy and he said it is improved but not perfect 👍
Man thanks for this video was looking for one, but some wasn't as informative as yours! I have a 68 and want to do the same on mine! Quick question what paint did you use for the pan paint? Did you paint it and then spray some clear or something? Thanks again!
Glad it helped! Unfortunately I am not sure of the paint that was used but any high heat engine paint on the outside should do the trick
Just wondering, does the transmission fluid in the torque converter come out when you lower the pan?
I have a question, once you move the car, should I wait until the car cools down? I did an oil change for my 69 but after awhile when parked the fluid was low, now several weeks later I wanted to put more fluid but it marked full
Also check the o ring on the dipstick tube at the bottom they can perish and leak
Good tip. Thanks!
I don't believe you used any gasket sealant during this project. Is that correct? This is my next project on my 66 and I want to do it as right as possible. I've also been warned to not use cork gaskets. Do you have any guidance on what material or brands to use? Thanks in advance for your input.
The trans fluid goes into the same hole as the dipstick ?
Yes
What do you think the cost is for this DIY job?
I read to drain, fill, drain then fill to try and get most of the old oil out of there. Is that recommended?
If you change it regularly this is not really necessary. A full flush is always the preferred method but more tedious. You can do partial flushes using your method. Each time the fluid will get incrementally better but you will use a lot more fluid. If you are going to use that method. Leave the old filter in and drive the car for an day or two to fully mix the old and the new fluid. When you do the second fluid change you will still have a portion of the old fluid left but ensuring it is mixed thoroughly will remove the most of the old fluid.
Ah ok. Makes sense.. . Car had been sitting for 14 years. Shifts are not as crisp as I remembered them. Kinda sloppy now. I ordered an oil pan with drain plug to make draining process easier and less messy.
Armando Martinez honestly I am not entirely sure. I've done full flushes on modern vehicles but not one this old. I'll try to look into it an get back to you.
The Sundae Drive I saw some videos and I guess they plug in some plug up transmission to a machine that sucks out old oil and fills with new oil. I'll just do a couple of changes hopefully that helps shifting.
Armando Martinez yeah that is how the shops do it. There are DIY methods. Those pumps can damage internals if not done correctly tho
Hi I recently bought a ford mustang 1970 with a leak in the transmission. We changed the oil filter, cleaned the oil pan, and installed a new gasket. It kept leaking so we bought a new gasket and it still leaks, any answers as to why?
Could be an imperfection in the pan so you aren't making a good seal
@@TheSundaeDrive what would you recommend to use apart from the gasket? Any kind of silicone or sealant?
Hi there , I know post bit old so may not reply to me but noticed you drained 2.9 qaurt and refilled almost the same , bit confused as specs show 5 5 qaurt s?
Dropping the pan only removes a portion of the total capacity of fluid. The rest is still in the lines, radiator and/or torque converter. If you drop 2.9 quarts , you add that back.
I have a 67 Cougar, 289, I'm gonna assume it's pretty much an identical process?
Have not worked on one so unsure. If it is the same transmission the answer is probably yes
Do u run motor while checking fluid
yes
You should of drained the torque converter at the same time. When you start the engine shift the tran thru all the gears to make sure all the passages are filled before to check level
Definitely want to make sure you shift through the gears before getting an accurate measurement 👍
is this the same as a C4 Pinto Trans on a 73
Should be. Did you end up doing it?
@@TheSundaeDrive not yet, I think my repair book says you can clean and reuse the filter?
Hehe Idk what I did wrong , but it’s leaking oil out. I might’ve installed the gasket wrong
😬 uh oh
You're lucky you didn't get killed from the car falling on you. You should never get under a car without safety stands.
Did you watch 00:53 ? You can see the jack stand and we say that we have jack stands under the car and wheel chucks behind the back wheels. I don't mess around when I'm under a vehicle lol
Great video!
Thanks!
