Ralph Penland - unbelievable performance here. Great Band. Had this on casette for years in my vehicle, recorded it llive one night from WBGO Jazz Michael Bourne, thank you.
First heard this version on a compilation 20 years ago and learned to sing most of the solos just from repetition - it's amazing to finally see the video now. Everything in this performance rules, and the drum solo is a masterpiece! It's like an essay on how to create and develop a solo...then bringing the band back in with the melody....off the chain.
Live jazz at its absolute best..which is why many, myself included, urge people to get out and see performances. Of course it has been shut down, but is slowly returning.
Damn, Penland is absolutely killing it all the way through and the dumbass cameraman missed most of it! This is one of the finest drum performances in history. In my top ten list since I heard it in the 90's but I never saw a video 'til now. Absolutely stunning!

I really dig the drummer playing the melody at 11:00.
Dig the drummer period. Really swung it. The periodic solos were nice instead of one big bash out.
powerful musical energy from a truly great band. Wow!
Love this great recording by Freddie......just outstanding! The rest of the band is on fire as well. Thanks for sharing this masterpiece! ;-)
Freddie is a titanic trumpet, thanks to the universe for bringing this genius. - jonas -.
Wow!!! What a peformance , of the great Freddie Hubbard.
What a performance by the entire band. I totally love Don Braden's tenor playing. I saw Freddie Hubbard in Toronto in the late 70s. Wow, what a band!

This was just one year before Freddie ruptured his lip and lost his chops for the rest of his life…
