  • The Nearly New Cashmere team thought it would be a fun experiment to blind test an array of different laundry detergents on our second hand cashmere. As a business, we want to ensure our cashmere, although second hand, does not look or feel second hand. All of our cashmere jumpers are of the highest quality and the washing liquid we use helps to give that luxury feel.
We only wash our second hand cashmere in the washing machine, on a short 30 degree wash followed by a fast spin. Check out our Cashmere Care video for more help with machine washing cashmere.
We chose four different laundry detergents, some specifically for washing cashmere, and some not, all varying in price. We then asked the team (who didn't know which was which) to pick their favourite based on smell and feel. Although not very scientific, there were clear favourites by the end of the video!
On all of our cashmere, we wash with Persil Professional washing liquid and Comfort Professional softener.

Thank you for the great video. If you do this test again I’d love to hear how The Laundress cashmere product compares!

Such good information! Hope the Woolite formula is the same here in US as it is in UK product. Just found your company via Jo Good's vlog Middleaged Minx. I too had moths once, only once, horrible experience. I could not bear to throw the damaged items out. So happy to hear about your service! Do you accept items from US? I assume I would be responsible for shipping costs. Again, so glad Jo shared information about your company.

Thank you! So pleased you've found us, isn't Jo wonderful?! Yes we accept 100% cashmere from anywhere and yes you would need to cover postage costs :)

My torso is a bit long and I was wondering if there is a way to stretch or relax the cashmere or merino wool. Please help. ❤

We wouldn't recommend stretching the cashmere but the best way to do this would be to gently stretch it once it has been washed and it is damp!

I am in the US and have been washing cotton/acrylic sweaters inside-out, inside a lingerie bag in my top-loading washer. I use unscented HE laundry detergent, then lay them to dry on a towel spread out on a bed. Will this method/detergent work for cashmere too or do I need to get a different detergent? I noticed in another video you use Persil and fabric softener. I have scent allergies so I avoid scented cleaning solutions.
Also I noticed the way you tied your scarf- is it looped in half, then one end threaded through the loop and the ends tied together? Very attractive!

Yes this method should work for cashmere, make sure the temperature is at 30 degrees and follow it with a fast spin to remove excess water. Then lay flat to dry. Most detergents will do the job, we use Persil to ensure we get the jumpers clean as they come in to us second hand! And yes you're right about the way the scarf is tied!

Can you unshrink a cashmere sweater? Mine has stretch to it but it seems to shrink back immediately no matter how much I stretch it out. Thanks!

I'm afraid there isn't a resolution that we have come across! Some people say they soak and stretch but we couldn't say how effective this is.

    Very interesting. Couple of things:
Should you try to go with a non-bio and if so, why?
Also, my washing machine plumber told me they do not recommend using softeners at all as they cause build up in the machine. I have a Miele which he said to just use white vinegar as a rinse for my washing. I’ve done this religiously since I bought it a few years ago and have never had any trouble (the only time I use softener is every 3-4 washes when doing towels if they feel somewhat rough. Any more than that causes a build up on them reducing their absorbency but a short tumble dry also fluffs them up) so hearing these all washed well without softener is really helpful. FYI, Miele have their own range of detergents including for delicates etc too which I have to say are very good albeit the expensive option. They didn’t have softeners available last time I checked here in Australia. Thought this might interest you.

That's very interesting thank you! No we use Persil which is bio, and adding softener is more of a personal preference than a need for cashmere. We have washed with and without softener and find it doesn't make a huge difference!
