Dan (the monster-man) Reeder
I can’t believe this was six years ago I remember watching this like it was yesterday !!!!
Yes, and the older you get the faster time goes by! Thanks for watching again! I'm flattered.
same! like wow time flies
Me too
Came across this only today due to a kind friend sharing it on facebook. So, naturally, I had to share it too, and tell everyone I could. Your work is inspirational and when you watch it, you end up with a lovely warm glow, because out there, are real artists doing amazing work, and sharing like this, so we can all have a go too, or at least feel a little better about the human race :) Thank you Dan, have a wonderful festive holiday (or Christmas if you prefer ;) ). David.
Wow, what a nice comment David! It is much appreciated!
Dan
Dan,
You make great work and the fact that you respond to virtually every comment is almost saintly.
Thanks for the amazing work and taking the time to post it online for all of us.
That is very nice of you to say KnitOutTheJams! I think that if someone is willing to take the time to watch my videos and then write to me that the least I can do is respond. I did respond to every comment since I started UA-cam, but a year ago, when Google took over UA-cam, I lost my channel. They were able to retrieve my videos with the comments, but not my subscribers or any of my responses. That was such a bummer. I know you didn't need to hear all of that. But there it is. Thank you!
Dan
Hey,
I'm unhappy to hear you were in that kind of situation due to corporate monopolizing of The Internet even further than it already has been.
I'm sorry you had to go through all that but you've got a fresh and loyal subscriber here. Im so glad to see you are enjoying your well-earned retirement.
Thanks again! Talk anytime!
KnitOutTheJams
Sorry. I didn't mean to rant. Thank you for your support. I do these videos because of nice people like you.
Dan
Ive been looking all over you tube at dragons and this is definitely the BEST one I have found.....absolutely stunning.
I'm very happy you like it! Thank you for the nice remarks!
I just have to tell you that your videos are my four-year-old daughter's favorite things to watch. We have seen them a dozen times and she will probably watch them that many again or more. She's just about got them all memorized. Lol! Awesome work! They are all fantastic!
+Devon Stewart
Thanks for the nice note Devon! I appreciate the nice remarks. I'm very happy that your daughter likes the videos. She must have very good taste!
Take care
Dan
I remember making a very simple paper mache bird in 3rd grade and everyone in my class thought it was super cool. It didn’t even have legs or a face.
Maybe it's time to pick up the medium again? You would love it!
Fantastic, as always. This guy's face has so much personality.
Thank you Stella. That is always particularly flattering coming from such a fine artist. I loved your egg!
Dan
Hello! I love your work! Im just wondering what that white material you use is, like on the horns and the webbed part on the neck, i have been trying to figure it out for ages! You have inspired me to create my own (on a smaller scale haha) and im struggling to find the right materials?
Thank you, please keep it up your work is amazing!
Meg :)
He never answer u that no??? I was wodering 2 whats that material 🤔
I've missed your vids man
I just don't understand dan how your not huge on youtube already I don't know how you could get yourself out there more but I reckon if you did your subscriber numbers would explode, your defiantly in my top ten youtubers.!!
Thank you! It takes a long time to make these. It's hard to keep up. Sometimes I just need to make art and not worry about filming. But I try. Thanks for your comments. I'd love it if more people saw my videos. Maybe someday.
Take care
Love the contrast of the blue eyes against the body color. Plus your cat is gorgeous. :)
Thank you Manny. Yes, I know the blue eyes would pop with those other colors. I'm glad you noticed. And I'll pass the compliment on to Eddie, although he'd rather just get a treat.
Take care
Dan
I love your video, I used to watch your video when I was 7 years old now I was too big and I wasn't remember the video I watch, now this remind my childhood back
Well look how fast time flies! I really am flattered that you found your way back to this video and took the time to comment. Thank you very much!
Sometimes I revisit this video for the dope music.
That is very nice of you to say! I look far and wide to find music that works. I really like the music I got for this video. So it's great to hear that others like it. Thank you very much!
You are amazing! I have been searching for a creative outlet and you have inspired me! Thank you for sharing your talent. I have made my own dragon based on this video and the book I bought. I am a HUGE fan and hooked for life!
I'm very happy to help out! Congratulations on your project! Yes, it is a great medium for self-expression. Glad you are enjoying it.
Dan

That's true! Or above the baby's crib!
Dan

Sometimes I wonder if it was really a good decision my friend made to have me as the Godmother lol
BellaDonna BloodCrave
I agree! :-)
Amazing! I've ordered your book, and I can't wait for it to arrive. Can I ask where you got the eyes you used for this dragon?
+Kemp Sparky
Sorry, for some reason I didn't see this comment. Hope you are underway!
He made them I believe using cabeshauns
Dan, I am in awe of your work and thank you deeply for sharing it and your process. I have one suggestion/request which is that you credit the background music you use - I like many of your choices (especially this one) and would like to support the artists by buying their music. Thanks!
Hello Julia. I use only somewhat generic, "royalty free" music. These artists sell their work to these companies exacty for this purpose. I support them by paying for the music and using it exactly as the license requires. This is a very different realm of music that the kinds of music you are referring to. Thanks for the note.
GourmetPaperMache Hi Dan, I didn't mean to imply that you were using the music unethically, I just wanted to hear more! I am familiar with "needle-drop" royalty-free libraries; you've chosen a good one!
juliadeetruchsess
Thanks Julia. And I didn't mean to sound defensive. I use four or five companies. I buy several and them promptly forget which companies I use for what music. The truth is I'm just too disorganized to do the right thing. I can say that this piece is called "Hard Life." Don't know the artist. Take care
Wow! You are truly a talented artist! Just amazing to watch your videos and what you create.
Thank you BOJ88! I appreciate the nice remarks.
Dan
I found you while looking for inspiration and technique, Jackpot! you are priceless as both!

Thanks for your kind words. Yes, that is Eddie, one of my "helpers".
Take care
Dan
your dragons are SOOOOOO cool and my sister loves dragons and she thinks that yours are amazingly awesome!!!!!!
Thank you Keira. I'm glad your sister likes this.
Dan
your work is just amazing! I've showed so many people your videos and each reaction is just the same: 'WOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH' . just a quick question... when you do the black wash, do you do it when the paint is dry or still wet? Thanks!
Ik I'm not him but I can answer you lol. As far as I know from expirience u have to do it when it's dry because it will ruin the paint job and u have to start over
Hello. I was wondering if , and I know it would be a lot of work and time, but I as a watcher of you videos, which I think are awesome, would think it would be cool if you made a video of a dragon or other creature in proportion to the head you made in this video. It's just a suggestion, but I think it would be pretty cool.
I absolutely Love your work! You construct with such ease! Thanks for sharing & showing the 'how to's', do you ever teach a class? If so, where? Do you attend shows or public events where one can go and see your work in person and/or watch you actually making one? I'm just venturing out into the paper mâché (haven't done it since elementary school) it's almost a lost art! But what I love is how you top it with cloth (more durable), and the appearance is remarkable, not to mention the entire final project is lightweight! Thank you again for sharing! I'm very excited about trying it!!
Hi Gloria. Every so often I give demonstrations. The last was at a conference in Texas where I was speaking. But those don't happen very often. That's why I do my videos and blog and books. Thank you for the nice remarks. Good luck on your project. Have fun!
Dan

Dan
Wonderful and beautiful work.
Thank you so much for the nice comment! You are very kind.
I am going to try and replicate what you've brilliantly done here except my end goal is where your 2:32 progress is. I like the darker, black eyes version!
Have fun Lonny!
Dan

+KKstudios GT
Thank you! Actually I'm right now making a 5-headed dragon trophy, the Tiamat Dragon from Dungeons and Dragons. One of the heads is white. I will have a video of it when I'm done.
Thanks for watching
Dan
Wow you are So talented. I bet George RR Martin would love a Drogon or Balerion Dragon. ;) BTW, you and your cat look like pretty nice peops!
Thank you! I'm currently making a Drogon trophy on my blog. Come look, www.papermacheblog.com
Dan
Just insane! Very very nice
What did you use for the teeth?
Thank you! I use Fimo or Sculpy for teeth.
Dan
OMG! This is so amazing, it would be great if you make a dragon like Smaug, pleeeease 😍 I love your videos, greetings from Mexico. :D
Thanks Tania. I love the Smaug in the movie but I prefer making my own version of the dragon. Take care
Dan
Fabulous work!!
Thank you Vicki! I really appreciate the comment.
Dan
Amaizing work you do there. what kind of paint do you use and wallpaper paste how do you mix it. sry for my bad english, comming from german. cant wait to see your next work
Thank you Atomy. I use all-purpose paint. As long as it is water based it will work fine. I use white glue (like the kids use in school) full strength.
Good luck
Dan
Hermoso Kitty, beautiful dragon, Thanx/
Thank you Alicia!
I am going to subscribe WHOOH !!! Awesome work love it ! yes there is a stigma that relates to the phrase "PAPER MACHE" I had the same sort of reluctance from people when I had a business called Creative Cactus Co where I was making cacti ( mainly the Cereus Giganteus ) as coat stands etc and just as decorations as my biggest were 8ft tall .. blah blah... anyway I dropped using paper mache and used "HYDRO POLLIMA FIBER " instead .This seemed to be a magic cure as I now had a secret recipe that generated interest and acceptance !!! as pathetic as is seems it helped 100% .My big interest in paper mache came to me as I watched a program about poor people in Africa and their ingenuity with available raw materials and wholly cow ! Out comes a wheel chair made from paper mache for a crippled friend I was blown away !
Hello Brian. Thanks for the commentary . I appreciate your experience. Here's the problem. People search the term "paper mache" almost 4000 times a day. I'm pretty sure they don't search "hydro pollima fiber" nearly as much. If the key words that lead to your business are not searched, you won't get found. Take care
Dan
Yes indeed you are right . this is how it works today with the internet . But if one of your main aims was to give paper mache the exposure it deserves then I would say job well done .
Brian Ninjutsu You are very kind Brian. Thank you! Good luck to you with your businesses.
Dan
Thank you for letting me find this ty
You are very welcome! Good luck!
I saw this when i was still a child
Glad you have grown up! I'm flattered that you came back! Take care
@@Gourmetpapermache wow you still reply in the comments
@@Gourmetpapermache my dad show this to me when i was a kid
@@Jeeode78 Of course! If you nice enough to take the time to write, then I absolutely need to respond. So thank you for writing!
Omg this is the coolest thing i ever seen
Thank you! I'm glad you like it.
Dan
Laughed at the cat bit ;)
Glad you liked it. Eddie (my cat) decided he liked the dragon. Thanks for watching.
Dan
Fantastique.....'Nuff said
You are very kind. Thank you!
Me gustaría que hicieras un video más despacio y que se vea haciéndolo poco a poco y paso a paso los materiales que necesitaría.
Came across this video on Facebook and I just had to stop in and say I LOVE the touching ending with you and your cat! And the dragon is amazing!!
Thank you Chasidee! That's very nice of you to say. I'll let Eddie know (but he will probably just want a treat). Take care
Dan
love it :)...love your cat also lol
Thank you very much Cathy! And I'll let Eddie know that you like him (but he will just want a treat).
Dan
GourmetPaperMache
Hahaha well give him one for me :P
Always inspiring stuff!
You are very kind. Thank you!
this is amazing!!! I love your painting techniques. But odd question, what kind of cat is that? It almost looks like a caracal cat.
Thank you for you nice remarks! I have two cat "helpers". This one is Eddie. He is Abyssinian. A little fact unknown fact about Abysinnians....they are the most prevalent domesticated cat on the planet. They just aren't that well known here in the US. Eddie is a great cat. Thanks for your interest.
Dan
i like your cat and the dragon trophy assbashian cat!
That's Eddie, my little abby cat. He's my "helper". Thanks again.
Dan
Absolutely stunning and inspiring. It is such a privilege to watch your process!
(Also, your cat is beautiful and looks like a little lion. What breed is he?)
Catharine Chen
Thank you Catharine! Eddie is Abyssinian. They are actually the most common house cat in the world. Just not so much in the US.
Dan
the skin in this dragon as all your jobs is amazing, looks so clean, when i see the wings on the other dragons i said omg, excelent! can you tell me how do you do the skin? congratulations, your job is amazing & wonderful, greetings from Mexico!
+Jair Adrian
Thank you Jair. I really appreciate the kind words. I add a "skin" of cloth (bed sheets) dipped in white glue. I call it "cloth mache".
Take care
Dan
Thank you so much! the teeths looks much real, what is it?? I enjoy so much your dragons, i really love'em!
+Jair Adrian
I made the teeth out of Fimo, a polymer clay. Good luck
Hello Dan,The monster-Man ! first time i have to say that u have a great talent !
Hello Freageek. I use just flour and water paste with newspaper for the initial paper mache parts. After I sculpt I add a "skin" of cloth (old bed sheets) dipped in white glue (like Elmer's). I call it "cloth mache". Makes the project strong and allows for details you can't get with just paper. Good luck with your project!
Dan
Thank you so much !!!
That glue stick using para PAPER , And Eyes As the beams
Hello Renzo. I am not sure what you mean. Sorry.
Dan
hello I like your videos and crafts I would like to know the materials you use to make your crafts and figures please tell me the list of materials you use in crafts that shows in the videos
Amazing work man! And BTW....That music is awesome!! I need to know who its by! Subscribed.
Thank you Brain! The music is called "Hard Life" but unfortunately I got it on a "royalty free" site a long time ago and have since forgotten which company I used. Sorry.
Dan
GourmetPaperMache What is the artist?
Amazing creation. And made from such an underestimated technique! Although I can't put my finger over the material you use to make the scales and other details, is it some kind of special paper or cloth?
Hi George. I add a "skin" of cloth (old bed sheets) dipped in white glue (Elmer's). I call the process "cloth mache". It adds a lot of strength and allows for details you can't get with just paper. Thanks for the kind words.
Dan
About how many hours and sessions did it take for this to be completed? Looks amazing!
also, what kind of paint do you use?
I don't keep track of hours, but it took a couple of weeks. I use all purpose paint, like you use to paint a house.
This is INCREDIBLE. I'm about to undertake a similar project. What did you use to create the teeth? Polymer clay? And your glue is simple white pva glue and white fabric sheets over the top of paper mache? Or something like Paverpol? Are you using a simple flour paste for the the paper mache or another recipe? Where did you get the glass half orbs for eyes? Sorry for asking so many questions. Is it just masking tape you're using to hold everything together? Thanks in advance for your time!
Hello Carla. I do use polymer clay for the teeth, usually Fimo. After sculpting with paper mache pieces I add a "skin" of cloth (old bed sheets) dipped in white glue. I like Elmer's but any white glue will work. I dubbed the process "cloth mache" for lack of a better term. I use just flour and water paste for the paper mache. I buy eyes online from taxidermy companies. There are many companies to choose from. And yes, I use masking tape to hold the paper mache pieces together. Good luck to you!
@@Gourmetpapermache Thank you so much! This is great info, I can't wait to give it a try.
Hola amigo como algo los dientes ?
GRacias por toda tu ayida, eres increible,, no me canso de ver tu videos
Gracias Wilmay. Hago los dientes de Fimo, una arcilla polimérica.
Excelent!! Only one question... whats the name of the music?
+Katy Escalante
Thanks Katy. The music piece is called "Hard Life". I bought it a long time ago from a "royalty free" music site.
Hi, your work is great! What is the white fabric/paper thing? Thaanks!
Thanks Gabriela. The final "skin" is cloth (bed sheets) dipped in white glue. I call the process "cloth mache".
GourmetPaperMache thank you, have a great day :)
hi , awesome . I need to make a dragon head for my Art academy. How did you make the eyes?
I buy eyes online from taxidermy companies. They also sell "blanks" so you can paint your own.
Wow. Wow. Just Wow!
So the external skin is cloth, is that the scales as well?
WhatNow858
Thank you! Yes, that is just folded cloth dipped in white glue. I call the process "cloth mache".
Dan
GourmetPaperMache Thank you! My first grade class was amazed! :DDD
WhatNow858
Great! Glad the kid had fun too!
Hola. Muchas felicidades!!!
Dan
Hello, Great Work!!! I skimmed through the comments but I can't find anything about the teeth... How did you make the teeth? Thank you.
justintlbrt
Hello Justin. I make the teeth out of Fimo or Sculpy. Any polymer clay will work.
Dan
Hi I am amazed at the beauty of your work! My friend linked your video on my fb feed and I hunted you down to ask where you get the glass to paint the eyes?!
Hi Heather. Those are "blanks", glass eyes with no paint on them. I got them at www.glasseyes.com
Dan
Are you using frog tape or regular masking tape? Amazing work by the way!
Thank you. I use regular, beige masking tape. Do NOT use Frog (or blue) tape. They are not very adhesive.
Thank you! your art is Amazing and
Very inspirational
You are very kind. Good luck!
I respect that nice job that is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are very kind. Thank you!
that's amazing! What kind of paint did you use?
Thank you Alycia. I use cheap paint, like you use to paint your house. I get it at hardware stores. Any water based paint will work well.
Dan
I did this too for a fun project, but it didn't turn out as well as this! Haha
I think some practice in involved. I've been doing this for a very long time. You'll be amazed how well your second project will turn out.
Dan
I love your excellent work! I was hoping you could give me tips and advice from your experience. I am going to be making a life size falcor the luck dragon for a convention and will be using paper mache. I dont think ive used mache since kindergarden with balloons lol if you have any helpful tips i would be so grateful!
Hello again. I responded on your last comment.
Dan
Hi Dan i'm very into your creations, you are a master! What do you think if instead of deep cloth in glue i deep into flour and water? it would be the same result? thank you
+Alessandro Ragone
Hello Allessandro. No, I don't think the cloth would work very well with flour and water paste. But to tell you the truth I have never tried it. You could experiment. I just think it wouldn't dry very well or be very strong. Still, give it a try.
Dan
+GourmetPaperMache Thank you for yor suggestion Dan i will give it a try and i'll let you know. I'm making my first trophy head and i will post the picture on your website as soon is done
+Alessandro Ragone
Good luck!
love the last 10 seconds...kitty approves hehehe :)
+kurorreach
Thank you! Funny, when this got posted on Reddit many people wrote that they hated the cat at the end. There are some cat haters out there (and many cat lovers of course).
quisiera saber si lo blanco que le pone para hacer las escamas es papel o tela mojada con pegamento
So amazing. I'm curious. What are the teeth made of?
Hi Mama. They are made out of Fimo, a polymer clay.
Dan
Thank you! I work with polymer clay and thought that was most likely. Very cool video.
i love yor dragons
Thank you Paul! I appreciate the comment.
Dan
hormigonator
Usted es muy agradable. Buena suerte!
Dan
Your Dragon trophy they're so beautiful are they for sale?
Thank you! I do sell some. You can find them under the "For sale" page of my site (link under the video). Take care
hi dan phil here i am having trouble with my masking tape it does'nt seem to stick as well as yours does any ideas thanks
Hello Philip. All masking tape is not equal. First, I hope you are not using the colored kind, blue or green. That is terrible. If you are using the regular beige kind then what's happening is that there is a small amount of residual flour on the outside of your mache pieces. To fix this, rub white glue all over your mache pieces and let them dry overnight. The tape will stick then. Also, after you have been sculpting with tape, again smear white glue over the project. That will keep everything together until you get the cloth mache on.
Good luck!
Dan
Question!
buena suerte
Dan
Like the music for this clip any chance of the band?
cashaacoustic
Sorry. I bought this piece years ago from a "royalty free" music site. I don't have a record of the band. It was called "Hard Life".
I LIKE YOUR CAT
simply awsome!
Thank you Heidi!
Hey, You are good!
Thank you Elizabeth! That's very nice of you to say!
Dan
hey I was just wondering if the sheet material you used, would it work if I used tissue paper or not? if not what is the best material to use? thx beautiful btw I love all of your work and also the polymer clay is that the same as making it out of oil, pva glue and corn flour
Yes, you could use tissue paper. I use cloth (old bed sheets) dipped in white glue. And what you are describing is "cold porcelain". That works well for teeth. It is a little more brittle than polymer clay though.
Dan
GourmetPaperMache thx this will help a lot, im planning on doing something using inspiration from your work on my final piece for my art GCSE thx again :)
in 5 words: B R A V O !!!
Thank you Pedro! I appreciate the comment! I'm glad you like this dragon.
Dan
Sir could tell me which paper is used to cover dragon or cover before colouring.....
The final "skin" is cloth (old bed sheets) dipped in white glue.
