I bass and catfish in California in the Central coast area. Never fished the surf but I'm watching your movies and I'm getting good ideas for my exploits. Thank you for the movies guys.
I do the same rig, if it is a snaggy area I don't clip the sinker direct to the snap, I tie a small amount of mono half the strength of my main line, if it gets snagged most of the time I get my rig back minus just the sinker
In Virginia and North Carolina (and maybe other places) we call this a "Fish Finder Rig". I'd suggest trying braid friendly sinker slides even if you use (as you should) mono shock leader. Especially on a spinning set-up the mono can save some fingers when throwing heavier sinkers.
I know that rig as the West coast rig ,I have a 2nd hook same size as a sliding hook. 2 hooks in the same bait doubles your chance of a hook up but does also catch 2 fish same time. Lot of fun when they're 5 lb each. Another add on is a Imp shield on main line & take your trace trace down to a clip on your sinker .Keeps all the weight together & gives you more distance .
Dude, sorry about the knee! Please stay off it (and the beach) as long as it takes to heal fully. I'd rather watch your old videos than have you wreck your knee by getting on it too early! Thanks for this tutorial. I've yet to make my first cast with my $20 Craigslist surf rod and reel, but I'm studying up on your channel so I'll be ready for that day! :)
awesome rig, have been using it for 12 years and never used anything else, everyone gets way too complicated with rigs these days! this is deffinetelly an effective amazing rig! coming from experience with it :D
I have use this rig for surf fishing on the treasure coast of Florida for 8 years using 16lb test which will handle any fish I catch like Jacks up to 25lbs and more . For sharks mostly Blacktips I use 30lb mono with 80lb mono leader which handle sharks so far up to about 120lbs. I have seen 15lb Jacks landed on a small Sabiki rig, I got away from braid and heavy line since I enjoy just the battle.Nice video, get well soon
I just moved from San Diego and went fishing on the regular caught a lot at ocean beach peir, shelter island peir is smaller and if you are still hurting it is a small peir. Coronado Beach is good for surf fishing.
I had the same injury over Thanksgiving of last year, and it's surprisingly easy to get down to the shoreline of the conowigo dam when the tide is low in crutches.
Depending on what type of weight you use you can place a bobby pin or paperclip through it so that if you hit a snag it will pull out and only leave the sinker behind and dangle the line and other tackle. Using this rig is awesome but if there are oyster beds or rocks or other rif-raff it can be a big pain in the ass.
It's called a fish finder rig. But your leader is to long if your going for distance because once you throw it it starts a helicopter affect because the air catches it and the bait and slows it down, it might be good for a short cast. If you want to have that long leader there's a rig called the pully rig, I make it and use it when I want to throw longer distances there's no drag or helicoptering. Larry
There are easy methods of stopping this, the clip to your shockleader can be used to put the hook on or if thats to short double down back to an impact lead, then when you cast it will stay streamlined but come apart in the water.
Lol im also super into cars and when yall said yall are doing the R.I.C.E. method i immediately thought of brendon with a 90's honda civic with a massive spoiler and fart cannon 🤣
Well I live in Philadelphia but I went to LA with my girlfriend about 3 weeks ago and we went to Catalina Island, unfortunately I didn't bring my rod and fishing stuff with me but there was a lot of people fishing and catching some good stuff, plus it's a really great experience to go there do some different activities and enjoying the beautiful nature you should give it a try guys 👍🏻
Great rig for bait (bunker, clams, etc.). Only thing you want to watch out for is the fish finder. Make sure that you get the ones that are rated for braid. That cheap plastic one will burn through braid pretty quickly.
hope you get better skipper and thank you for the knowledge you are the best. tomorrow i'm going to surf casting with wife and see if i will do it right.. and this is the kinda rigs i was looking for which i was looking at carolina rig :D ,,, thanks again tomorrow i'm so excited it is two hour drive to arrive to the place where we are going to fish
Here's some friendly fyi. That knot you're using to attach your hook is called a "Snell knot" Whenever I tie that knot I like to use a hook that has a bent over eyelet. It keeps the shank of the hook inline with your leader line. BTW welcome to the Jacked up knee club. I tore two ligaments and chewed up 70% of the cartilage in my left knee 36 years ago.
As i have self dislocating knee cap and have had to hop more than 300rds to get help with my knee cap couple inches from my ankle i cant feel your pain, nice rig i prefer to use the snow mans rig as less parts
Awesome!! I've been pier fishing in LA since I was a kid and I still go out once in a while. I'd recommend the following piers: Hermosa, Venice, and Redondo. Common baits used: squid, sardines, mussels. Best bait, in my opinion, is mackerel and shrimp. I've met people fishing the shallows at the pier using chicken hearts for bait and they were catching. Best times to fish are sunrise and sunset. You guys are awesome, you'll love LA and SD for sure.
If you're fishing with braid make sure you use a "braid" friendly sinker slide. It will not damage the braid unlike the slide in the video. Great video man and give that knee time to heal. The fish will be ready when toy return. Tight Lines!!
Pismo beach in central California is a hot spot for surf fishing, but it is a little north of where you guys are going. The surf fishing is great in my area though! Hope you have a fun trip!!
go to lake tahoe. it is worth the drive but it is a great spot to catch trout and bass. you can rent a kayak or do a charter. it is best to use a heavy rig with a minnow and flashers
Very informative and humorous, laughing is good. Multiply your knee problem by two, that's what I live with 24/7/365. For some reason the inner half of the cartilage in the knees decided to go missing and causes bone on bone contact when I walk. Injections haven't done much good so I reckon I'll just have to slim down and get them replaced. Dating for three years?, come on guys take the leap, the waters fine, this Nov it will be 49 yrs. for me and da mama.
+Dennis Sheridan haha, thanks for sharing, Dennis. Congrats to you and your 49 years! As for the knees, I'm so sorry to hear of your pain. That's something that I'm sure is a constant bother. I hope you can find something to relieve it! Do you get out fishing?
thanks for showing how to tie beach fishing rig.. i have a suggestion might be helpful.. you can use fishing silicone tubing instate of using the bead..
Catch yourself a California halibut! Use a dropshot with a Berkley gulp grub they like to stay in sandy bottoms so a beach pier would be nice. Also check out the bay shelter island pier
The running ledger rig is very efficient, the way it's designed is to allow 0 pressure on the fish, it works practically anywhere and the way you set it up is to just lighten you drag
Ocean Beach pier or imperial Beach pier and shelter island pier are good in San Diego. Good for macrell or bass. And plenty of shovel nose guitar fish and rays. Halibut from most shores or jetties. If you find any good surf fishing make sure you post it because I would love to fish them too. Love your videos and sorry about your knee man.
Hey budd feel better. Sorry to hear about your injury I know how u feel. If you have time on your next trip love to see you add some crabbing. Also catch a hammerhead species. Love your videos. Cheers. Get better soon
This rig contradicts the episode on tying a shock leader as there is no swivel. I tie the same rig. But I was thinking about that bead chaffing the knot. I just knot on a cut rubber band instead of a bead or even two rubber band knots. Let that lead slam into rubber instead of hard plastic that does not always slide over the knot. I've never had problems with beads, so I guess they work. But rubber bands are cheaper and have a lot more uses (making weedless hooks, lashing rods together, free line fishing, etc. This one will be hard to describe, but I will try. I fish with an open bail. Best on a flat dock. One without a railing. Cast this rig. Leave the bail open and lay the rod flat on the dock. Fill a pop can with a little water. Pull the line out between the reel and first guide to the left or right a few feet and place the loop over the pull tab of the can. When the fish runs, it pulls over the pop can and it is on an open bail. Close the bail and cross his eyes. Now you can fish in complete darkness as you will hear the can go over. Another rubber band trick. Cut your rubber band and wrap it around the cork right above where the line comes off the reel. Open the bail. Tuck a loop of line under one wrap of rubber band. The fish runs and out goes the line on an open bail. The rubber band gives enough resistance so wind and waves do not pull you line out. For headlamps, I use the one for car detailing. Why? Because it is on and off. No cycling through high, low, green and red to get to off.
I've been following your for a while now. Just yesterday I was thinking of a way to rig something Iike this using a swivel and 10# test line or a paper clip like you suggested in another video so I wouldn't lose so much gear.
Right on bro, good info. I've been going out fishing once a week for the past year I haven't really gotten a chance to surf fish this Monday we will be giving it a try. I live in ventura county been hearing in Santa Barbara they been catching rockfish and halibut off the pier last week in huememe pier(oxnard) everybody was catching mackerel, perch and jacksnout off the pier as well
Lots of good places in LA, Carrillo, PV, I have buddies that stand up Paddle board fish in the kelp patties. That is the best way. Malibu has a lot of good spots too
my secret spot to get on massive Stripe Bass is Zuniga Point at San Diego Bay a nice shoal area with a load of structure for fish ( Sea grass warning in fall-spring)
Dude very excited that you are coming to cali I fish off of Santa Monica pier I catch sea bass and mackerel most of the time redondo beach pier is also good
I live in Palm Springs California, you guys should go to Catalina for fishing. It's about and hour boat ride out of la. Amazing fishing and ill be there the 1st the 4th spear fishing and beach fishing
Hi I had written a pretty long response but lost it by accident, but I'll type it again. Wife and I often go to Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, CA. They mostly have Pacific Mackerel there during the summer months if you fish mid-pier to the end. Use a sabiki rig like you have in previous videos and you should hook up fish in no time. San Clemente pier also has quite a variety of fish as well, from guitar fish, bat/round rays, mackerels, sardines, surf perch, walleye perch, etc. Lately we have mostly been going to Balboa Pier because it has better parking, more action, and better food. There's a Ruby's Diner at the end of the pier in case you get hungry and other shops around the pier too. San Clemente's selection is rather limited, and sadly I can't recommend any of them. Let me know if you decide to go to either of them; I'm looking forward to seeing them in upcoming videos, or maybe we might see you there!
+taoyen1579 took a screenshot of your comment. Thank you for taking the time to write all that out. It is so helpful. I hope we bump into eachother! If you see us, come say hi!
Hey Senko Skipper!! I live around Los Angeles, and I use your guys' surf fishing tips when I go out over here! I know you are allowed to surf fish at Huntington or Bolsa Chica Beach to surf fish. Huntington Beach also has a very long pier that you can catch a very wide variety of species! You could also probably get a boat out to Catalina island for pretty darn cheap right now around 40$! It's a 3/4 day trip where you can catch from rockfish to yellow tail which are our game fish! If you have any questions or tips for fishing on the coast hmu!!! Hopefully this helps!
Come to Santa Barbara! Lots of great Halibut Fishing. I am new to Surf Fishing and Ive learned a lot from you guys. I’d love to host you for a fishing trip.
Cant wait to see Cali videos, I fish out by Oceanside pier, in Oceanside,Ca; its north of San Diego fun times there. San Diego area is good can also fish the bays with bass gear and tackle and catch calicos, stripes, etc, good fun fighting sea bass. I run fresh water crank-baits a lot. Catalina is nice, good area to fish, closer to L.A. area. If your lucky we've had years were yellow tail are being caught in the bays
Hi Brendon. I'm big fan of your videos. I just started beach or surf fishing now that I got stationed in Georgia. I have little experience with saltwater fishing and I have so many questions. I was wondering if you could make video about how to properly surf fish with circle hooks, how to properly put bait on a circle hook, what type of fishing rigs are best for surf fishing, and what hook sizes would you recommend based on the type of fish you are targeting. Again, big fan. Any guidance or advice will be greatly appreciated.
Take a cheap fishing charter out of Marina Del Rey.. You can do a cheap half day for like 45 bucks.. Everyone goes to Santa Monica Pier it will be hard to get a good spot (but def a tourist attraction) . Ventura/ Oxnard Area is pretty good right now.. There is def better fishing on the San Diego side. But there is def some okay spots in LA.. (living here for 23 yrs)
I like your program now I know how to caching fish in river and ocen thank you so Much....GoD bless you... I am from sri lanka , livin in italy,............thank you....,!
great video man .Hope you recover fast . glade to see you took some of my advice and did a tackle run down . Next time talk about some of the tackle you throw. As well as your go to lures .
Well cant help you in Los Angeles. But when you come up to the better half of California... Look me up. :) Tight lines and hope you have a great time in Sunny Southern California.
Great video and consider taking this unfortunate opportunity to do videos that you couldn't in the past. And when you do come down to San Diego please contact and come out and with some local anglers. I know someone of us (like me) have an extra kayak or boat for to do you some nice SoCal ocean fishing.
Make more beach fishing and pier fishing videos please. Also can you do more reviews for beach fishing lures. These videos really help! Love the vids!!
I bass and catfish in California in the Central coast area. Never fished the surf but I'm watching your movies and I'm getting good ideas for my exploits. Thank you for the movies guys.

That is the kind of surf fishing we do about 70% of the time. Indeed, the bead matters, nice explanation.
awesome rig, have been using it for 12 years and never used anything else, everyone gets way too complicated with rigs these days! this is deffinetelly an effective amazing rig! coming from experience with it :D

There are easy methods of stopping this, the clip to your shockleader can be used to put the hook on or if thats to short double down back to an impact lead, then when you cast it will stay streamlined but come apart in the water.
How long does it needs to be?
reaguurder a good length for a leader is about 12-18 inches
Hey chief, I want to thank you because even though I haven't caught more fish, I know more about setting up for fishing
Some fish finder terminals are designed to not wear with braid line. The normal white ones are soft, and will be chewed up, with the braid friction.
Lol im also super into cars and when yall said yall are doing the R.I.C.E. method i immediately thought of brendon with a 90's honda civic with a massive spoiler and fart cannon 🤣
Pacifica Pier is the #1 spot to go, fishing there is insane, so many bites throughout the day.
Go to Newport/Balboa all the way to the wedge by the jetty
We usually use squid, Kastmasters or drop shots with both
Well I live in Philadelphia but I went to LA with my girlfriend about 3 weeks ago and we went to Catalina Island, unfortunately I didn't bring my rod and fishing stuff with me but there was a lot of people fishing and catching some good stuff, plus it's a really great experience to go there do some different activities and enjoying the beautiful nature you should give it a try guys 👍🏻

knotted up rubber band, old pencil eraser, or any kind of rubber piece also works like the sinker bead if your super cheap :)
We call the slider rigs or bottom bouncer rigs. We use them for catfish to sturgeon in the Bay Area.
Here's some friendly fyi. That knot you're using to attach your hook is called a "Snell knot"

+DaveSanctuary very good tip. Thank you
my buddies and I just started fishing balboa pier! its been really fun.
i use the same set up.its called fish finder set up with a fish finder rig that holds the sinker
So sorry to hear about your injury get better soon
Ocean Beach pier is the longest pier in California, but I usually go to Oceanside pier, though it's pretty crowded this time of year
There is a ton of fishing off of the Huntington Beach Pier. Its located south of LA and north of San Diego
Pismo beach in central California is a hot spot for surf fishing, but it is a little north of where you guys are going. The surf fishing is great in my area though! Hope you have a fun trip!!

3 years and I proposed, married 44 years, our motto "never a dull moment" she's the light of my life.
Get well soon, best of everything to you both.
Hey budd feel better. Sorry to hear about your injury I know how u feel. If you have time on your next trip love to see you add some crabbing. Also catch a hammerhead species. Love your videos. Cheers. Get better soon
You can try out Otay Lakes in San diego. Pulled in a 5.2 lb bass this weekend.

For headlamps, I use the one for car detailing. Why? Because it is on and off. No cycling through high, low, green and red to get to off.
Also, using a bobber stopper after you put on the bead, it acts as a buffer.
I've been following your for a while now. Just yesterday I was thinking of a way to rig something Iike this using a swivel and 10# test line or a paper clip like you suggested in another video so I wouldn't lose so much gear.
Make sure you make it up to Ventura for some surf fishing. Nice Perch to be had! Enjoy.

you guys so sweet together.
Hope your knee is all healed now. Take care
my secret spot to get on massive Stripe Bass is Zuniga Point at San Diego Bay a nice shoal area with a load of structure for fish ( Sea grass warning in fall-spring)

Come to Santa Barbara! Lots of great Halibut Fishing. I am new to Surf Fishing and Ive learned a lot from you guys. I’d love to host you for a fishing trip.
oh man hope your leg gets better soon XD sucks to be injured or sick or busy ESPECIALLY when the fishing is too hot to miss.

Is it feeling better man ? I wish you a speedy recovery. If you ever come to India ....ping me.By the way I never caught a fish. But I like the videos.
Belmont pier in Long beach for mackerel and possibly halibut
Redondo Beach for surf perch
Love the blooper reel!
😂😂 glad to hear it 😅😅
I’m like you. I’m bad at names but I can tie the different knots lol. Great video. Starting to surf fishing in Panama City Beach, FL.
Feel better! You should fish with landshark fishing.
Sliding sinker clip is called a fish finder. Knot to the hook is called a snell
Great videos, specially this one. I use this method all the time. I am a Surfcaster. Btw Its Sinker slides.
Thanks, gonna try this rig this weekend
You should make a pier fishing guide
Love the bloopers!!!
My favorite rig
I like your program now I know how to caching fish in river and ocen thank you so Much....GoD bless you... I am from sri lanka , livin in italy,............thank you....,!
great video man .Hope you recover fast . glade to see you took some of my advice and did a tackle run down . Next time talk about some of the tackle you throw. As well as your go to lures .
I live in San Diego go to Coronado island ether surf or pier there are some huge fish under the Coronado bridge
I've noticed about all your videos are based around coastal fishing. If you're ever in the mood to trout fish in the mountains of NC, holler at me
With what type of fish would you use this rig? I want to see how you make a pompano rig.
Well cant help you in Los Angeles. But when you come up to the better half of California... Look me up. :) Tight lines and hope you have a great time in Sunny Southern California.
Senko dipper In my opinion you should try beach fishing in Monterey Bay
Great video and consider taking this unfortunate opportunity to do videos that you couldn't in the past. And when you do come down to San Diego please contact and come out and with some local anglers. I know someone of us (like me) have an extra kayak or boat for to do you some nice SoCal ocean fishing.
Dude that sucks about your knee thanks for helping with the rig
Make more beach fishing and pier fishing videos please. Also can you do more reviews for beach fishing lures. These videos really help! Love the vids!!
+Devon Johnson you got it👍
Senko Skipper thanks!!
Senko Skipper come beach fishing San Clemente. A very good abut shop for that area is "hogans bait and tackle".
try Kast King braid (on Amazon).. much cheaper than PowerPro and works just as good.
