Nice visit to south castlemilk😅. Should get the 3C bus from George square to Strathaven and visit a lovely town that has a load of history and only 30 mins from Glasgow
Baillieston, at the east end of Glasgow used to be a village too. Originally part of Lanark District it was brought into Glasgow during boundary changes in 1975. Now it's more like a small town.
That's where I am right now! There was also Swinton, in fact there were lots of small villages. Have a look on the OS maps website, it's going some fantastic ones which go back 100+ years 😊
At first I misheard you and thought you were cycling to Kilmarnock in 23 minutes, an Olympian effort! (The floral clock there is good…). As it was, a lovely day out! I know of a village in Nottinghamshire which has a similar trail, but nothing like as pretty…
If I knew you were visiting Carmunock, I would have been more than happy to give you a tour. The Social Club used to be the village school and Mitchell's restaurant was formerly the Boghead Inn. The police station is now two private houses. Some locals may remember the two policemen Wattie and Purdie. The houses opposite Low Green used to be the Green Garage. Lovely wee village.
@IanGillespie-ze6ek yes, it was the Cool Jade. There was also a pub called Bruce's Cave further down the road at the corner. I believe that burned down in the late 50's early 60's.
Love your video of carmunnock. There used to be 2 bus services in the village but Strathclyde buses axed the 22 service to the east end then the 31 was axed to east kilbride as first buses Glasgow. Sad but true. I miss the bus service to east kilbride bus station from croftfoot roundabout.
The minute I saw that wall art the start of the video, I knew it was the Gorbals. When we were kids we would go up to Carmunnock and mingle with all the posh kids and get mad with it together. The two places you were in, The Gorbals and Carmunnock couldn't be further apart in every way possible. It's a beautiful wee village, I wonder if Jackie Bird (BBC Weather Lady) still stays up? there?
Haha that sounds like a good bit of fun! It is a beautiful village. I'm not sure if she still stays there but if I'm ever there again I'll need to keep an eye out for her.
@terrifictraveltales I've just come across your channel and you might have already visited these 2 places but they're also lovely wee villages, Law and Thorntonhall, both jus outside Glasgow of course but very beautiful and great history. Thanks for your little video, it was great to see the place after 30 years.
I cycle up to Carmunnock a lot to do some loops of nice lanes around the farms. I did wonder if you were on an e bike when you said 23 mins and were standing in the Gorbals! It's a lovely village. If you fancied going back again to do more exploring, take the train to Thorntonhall and cycle to Carmunnock, it's 2 miles away. It would involve cycling on quiet lanes mostly and 1 short bit on a busier road. Thorntonhall is a nice sleepy village too albeit it comes under South Lanarkshire.
Yep, as soon as you said Kings Park, I knew you'd confused Carnunnock Rd with Carmunnock. "Hope it's not hilly" it's the bloody biggest hill there is!.
@terrifictraveltales 🤣 I used to live in that area, Kings Park was our local park and Croftfoot was a local "stomping ground". Also there used to be a fancy Chinese restaurant in Carmunnock, I was in a few times, think it's now Mitchell's though. Thanks for the memories 😉
I agree. I drove through it every working day for over 25 years on the way to Clydebank and always felt it would be a great (if very quiet and lacking a lot of amenities) place to stay.
Really interesting. That said, so many towns and cities throughout the UK are collections of villages that eventually merged into one. They reckon London is like that. What's unique about this one is it retains a village feel.
I live In East Kilbride so know Carmunnock well. Passed through it many times. The 31 used to be handy as it went from my bit to Glasgow. Was gutted when they axed the East Kilbride route even tho there was a petition and 2 MSP's involved. Walked from Cathkin Braes to Carmunnock. That was a long walk and food from Booth's before walking back to EK
I used to live in Camborne, Cornwall and they have an area called The Glebe - it's not far from the Parish Church. I have ancestors from Renfrew so enjoy videos of the area - thank you.
I've never been to Carmunnock but it looks nice! I was thinking that Westerton might be included as a village within Glasgow, but I've just double-checked and it's literally just on Glasgow's city limits and falls under Bearsden instead.
Its nearly a straight road 😂 Althoughbyou did take the cycling scenic route. I advise going through the MTB park at the top of castkemilk do that comebout at the top then turn right then right again at the bottom of the hill.
Yes I agree it's very far from scenic until you get to the parks: when you get to Castlemilk you're almost home and dry. I videod the graveyard from the air this year. It's got some interest, like the grave of a Glasgow woman who was married to the the first (I think!) black missionary ordained in Africa . Not the most interesting place for a herirtage trail but nice to just walk around on a sunny day for an hour and get a coffee. A young friend and I got lost cycling from East Kilbride to Glasgow via Rutherglen so I sympathise! Nice watch, thank you. Have a safe, adventurous 2025. Just had a thought! Why don't you give that a try: train out out to EK and cycle back via any way you like. You too could get lost, lol! Need to be quick though since the line is closing from end January for months!
That's interesting, never knew about that! I'm glad there is a heritage trail as it's great way to learn more about places. That's a good idea for the cycle! Need to see if I can persuade Iain to cycle in winter😀 Hope you have a great 2025, too!
@heatherbruce4996. I think she's referring to Carmunnock being the only village within a city. She's probably aware there are villages throughout Scotland 😊
Hello guys why don't you visit our wee village of Carfin. Near Motherwell we have the only Lourdes grotto in Britain check it out on you tube ..love the show ❤
Thank you so much for watching our video! 🙂

@@Glesga_lassie Crosshill too! just across the A8 road from Swinton, where I was born-in the hoose!

Haha that would certainly be an impossible challenge. I haven't visited Kilmarnock so might be something for the future! Thanks for watching 😊
Haha i did exactly the same
At fist I thought she had a funny way of saying kilmarnock. I also thought if that's where you are going, you are going to be very disappointed 😂
Got to 3:20 and thought, you’re going the wrong way !! Cos that my house😳😂😂
Haha no way😂😀

Hi Bill, there used to be a fantastic Chinese restaurant , I think it was called the Cool Jade back in the early 80s, maybe you can confirm
@IanGillespie-ze6ek yes, it was the Cool Jade. There was also a pub called Bruce's Cave further down the road at the corner. I believe that burned down in the late 50's early 60's.

It is a fantastic place to live.
That would have been great! It sounds like the village certainly has a lot of character! Thanks for watching 😊
Your Scottish accent is really starting to shine through. 👍🏴
Haha thank you😊🏴
Westerton in east Dunbartonshire has a village. It’s small but still a village
A few people have mentioned Westerton-might need to check it out😊
Drumchapel was a village at one time too.
You're right-Drumchapel used to be a village😊
I’m 74 years old and I grew up in drumchapel but never knew it was a village ye learn something new every day

My Google maps seems to be quite optimistic.😃
That sounds like a good idea, will need to go again with Iain!
Thanks for watching 😊
@terrifictraveltales happy to help with logistics planning around Glasgow involving cycling!!!
It is an educational channel. Love it. 🏴
Thank you very much for watching😊
Milngavie is worth checking out some nice cycling around Murdock park, water works etc
Milngavie does look like a great place to visit. I'll need to check it out. Thanks for watching 😊
@@terrifictraveltales, go there by train. Lovely station.
Yep, as soon as you said Kings Park, I knew you'd confused Carnunnock Rd with Carmunnock. "Hope it's not hilly" it's the bloody biggest hill there is!.
Hahaha I get lost every single time I go anywhere 🤣
@terrifictraveltales 🤣 I used to live in that area, Kings Park was our local park and Croftfoot was a local "stomping ground". Also there used to be a fancy Chinese restaurant in Carmunnock, I was in a few times, think it's now Mitchell's though. Thanks for the memories 😉
I hadn't heard of Carmunnock but it looks a pleasant place to live.
Me neither, I got the same impression 😊
I agree. I drove through it every working day for over 25 years on the way to Clydebank and always felt it would be a great (if very quiet and lacking a lot of amenities) place to stay.
I was interested to know whether your bike was still where you left it 😊, love Glasgow and hopefully we’ll visit soon hi from a damp Ireland
Fortunately, yes, as I was boroughing Iain's!
Hope you have great weather when visiting😊

Glad you enjoyed the video! There are so many interesting places to visit around Renfrew😊
@@terrifictraveltales I will visit one day. Coincidentally i have a nephew who lives there.
Left the Gorbals 24 years ago. It now looks like an absolutely soulless place.
That about nails it. Stayed there (Turrif street) over 40 years ago before all the motorway flyover, city circular stuff was all in place.
Thanks for sharing - always wondered what people think about the Gorbals having changed so much
Google read my mind, I was just thinking of having a stroll round Carmunnock tomorrow.
Haha what are the chances! Hope you have a great walk tomorrow 😊
@@terrifictraveltales I've just checked the weather forecast, might have to postpone until Friday. :)
You should check out Glasgow's forgotten village - Grahamston. You might get some interesting material for your vlog.
Thank you! Will need to add Grahamston to my list😊

Yea, Carmmunock is worth a wee trip! The Heritage Trail is particularly nice😊
If you had walked in that gate at number six you would have seen a seating area of the mitchell restaurant.
Ah that's interesting. I'll need to go back and check it out the food looks great.
@terrifictraveltales 👍
Thanks
Thank you very much!😊
@@terrifictraveltales I grew up there sixty years ago.
Plenty wildlife in Toryglen. 🤣
😃

Somehow, I always manage to take the 'scenic' road 😃
But will need to take your suggested route when I visit the next time😊
if there is a low green and a high green, where is the one inbetween
That is a very good question😃
Have you or Ian ever considered getting ebikes ?
Initially expensive but a great way to get around the city.
Yea, that's a really good idea!😊

There's lots of villages in Scotland cumbernauld has two there are villages everywhere

You're Scotland has many beautiful villages.
Only village within the city of Glasgow as @marian6593 says.
DANGER STRANGER THATS WHAT VILLAGERS THINK.
You might be right, there were probably a few neighborhood watch signs about too!

Thank you for the idea. That sounds really interesting. Thank you for your support😊
I was born in Glasgow Parkhead. My mum was from Motherwell my Dad born in Carfin . I’m in Coatbridge now .
Why are you whispering, is it a sleepy village. Iain in Glasgow
Not sure, but felt I didn't want to wake everyone up😃
Castlemilk 😂
Never really been there
Ah Carmunnock.Im 2 miles away from it in East Kilbride.Need to drive if you live there or theres no point
Didn't initially realise how close Carmunnock is to East Kilbride-think it's a nice wee village 😊
Scotland's full of villages n Edinburgh's the capital not Glasgow
Will need to check out Edinburgh's villages
Speak up can hardly hear you 😮
Thanks for the feedback 😊
Strange accent
In what sense? Sounds like a normal middle class lowland accent to me.
Maybe because I grew up in Germany😃
