    Very informative. Have you any tips on how to set-up the router for maximum efficiency. My THG3000 seems to allow good wifi around the house but the Sky Q struggles when streaming. The smart TV, Sonos set-up and another TV using a Firestick all work perfectly.

    • @freename
      @freename  Рік тому

      Is the Sky Q box in a much "worse" location, close to a wall or within a metal framed cabinet etc? (or sandwiched between a DVD player and a Humax box type issue).
      Even small changes of location can make a big difference. Does Sky work better if you move it out of the cabinet a bit or put something underneath it to prop it up ?

    Like your screenshot of the sharing tab, there are no user credential and permission options for allowing external USB drive access via Samba. Don't get me wrong, I have read access to the samba share via win 10 and linux based boxes, but it would be nice to have permissions for write and root folder structure too, instead of the annoying metadata folders the routers samba implementation gives you.
    However, if you look up the router on vodafones website, the walkthrough shows a page to add a samba user. I thought perhaps this was a new firmware feature, but my firmware update fails every time too! Grrr...

    Hi cheers for the clear and concise tour of the router's web interface; it's exactly what I was looking for. I've been trying to find the maximum number of connected devices the router supports - do you happen to know the answer? Thanks!

    • @freename
      @freename  2 роки тому

      @@andewcoo Good question. I'd guess that there may be a hard coded limit of around 30-35 devices per radio (so IRO 60-70 to 60 across both 2.4GHz and 5GHz). This is how some Zyxel routers work (See Max Clients entry box on ua-cam.com/video/kL5wkafXEZk/v-deo.html ). If there isn't such a limit then the limit is going to just be until radio time slots become so scarce that your clients can no longer get usable throughput. That might be nearing or in the low hundreds of clients mark.

      That won't be down to the router. That is normally down to how the ISP runs the network. However I through that Vodafone provided a dynamic IP unless you rang up and asked them to make your account a static IP. If dynamic then just rebooting the router is likely to give you a new IP.

      Not that I know of. The best you could do is to use your normal router for the broadband side and then reconfigure the Vodafone router to be a wifi access point and plug it into a long network cable to the main router. Then place the vodafone router closer to where you want coverage.
      Google on how to change a router to an access point. In summary set the vodafones LAN IP to an IP that isn't in use. Turn off DHCP on vodafone router. Turn off IPv6 (if supported) on vodafone router. Plug LAN on main router into LAN on Vodafone router.

    Hiya. I'm shopping around for home fiber broadband right now. Signed up for Sky fibre Broadband and awaiting an engineer visit next week. Dunno if that was a good idea coz I heard of not many good reviews. But I'd like to ask what makes Vodafone different from the likes of BT/EE/Sky/Plusnet? Would you say their broadband is stable and reliable?

    • @freename
      @freename  4 роки тому +1

      Unless you are one of the few fttp places every provider other than virgin media use the same copper cables BT put in and the same green cabinets in the street. Why sets each provider apart is reliability of their routers, pricing and technical support. If you have VDSL line drops on one provider then you will have that same problem with other providers. I'd go with sky over Vodafone. Both have good routers, both have good pricing. Both have fairly frustrating tech support. Sky, I know, have working IPv6.. I don't think Vodafone do yet.

      @@freename We rent in a 6th floor flat in a modern building in East London. Almost all ISPs are available in my postcode apart from Virgin Media which they said will be up and running in a fortnight. But how would I know if the broadband goes FTTP? I heard from most people I spoke to Sky is worse in broadband speeds. Then I read a report from Ofcom that before and during the pandemic the worse with complaints was Vodafone and Sky and EE are joint for least. As we are renting any drilling involved is a no-go so I've taken out Virgin Media and Hyperoptic. With Vodafone I get some discounts as a key worker. With Sky they are stingy. The engineer is coming next week and our Sky router has arrived. And I assume they always send the latest WiFi router i suppose but dunno which ones offer a much stable and consistent service and customer support overall.

    • @freename

      Yes it is. Make sure you
      Change the 192.168.1.1 IP address of the second / spare router to one you don't use like 192.168.1.2.
      Turn off DHCP on the second / spare router.
      Plug one of the LAN ports on the main router into one of the LAN ports of the spare router and off you go. You may also want to change the wifi name and password to be the exact same for both of the routers too so you don't have to swap between wifi names when you go between rooms. Good luck.

    DDNS is not a good selection. Most have a paywall or need a regular log on to keep account active. There is no allowance for free form entry with URL or UID. Would have been nice to have afraid.freedns as a selection, totally free for the average user, using the freemium business model. Strangely, my router is slow when accessing the admin pages. Takes up to 5 seconds to access. Also no mac/ip bonding and no Wake on Wan. Totally useless for what is becoming a work at/to/from home environment. The only consolation is that the WAN IP can be fixed if asked for, but useless without the rest of what is considered today, as standard.
