It's like going into a new era. I will never forget how I found your channel. One of your networking videos was recommended to me from watching an old RadioShack tutorial video about setting up internet wiring in a house. And then you just recently released your first Trying to FIX video. I watched it and thought of how neat it was. Been watching since and will continue to do so. Oddly enough one of the most memorable videos was that refrigerator a couple years back.

Thanks for that Vince, I've been following your tips for a long time now. We're in the country and 'exchange line only' i.e. copper cable to the exchange. Although the exchange is fibre enabled, Openreach have no plans to improve our connection. BT quote us 5mbs down and 1mbs up but using your tips I got that up to 7.5mbs down with the phone line. However, I recently changed to a 4G router and a Three 12 month unlimited data contract. We only get a 3G signal and although the signal strength is 75-100%, the signal quality is poor at -85 to -90dBm. Moving the router and now with an external antenna makes little difference, but my download is now a fairly stable 15-20mbs and 1.9mbs upload. That might not sound great, but it's twice to three times better down and double the speed up! Thanks again for the videos and good luck with the channel.

I've got the same setup. In my loft, it was bimbling around 15Mbps. I bought and external aerial and no matter where o put it upstairs, the signal & speed didn't get better - in fact it got worse.
Like Vince said, try it all over the house... And similar to him, the best signal for the router alone was in the kitchen.
I positioned my external router outside and tried various positions and the best one was about 7feet off the ground in the opposite side of the house to where the masts were located!! (Found this using the Cell Tower location finder app) and now I'm getting 50, 60 and sometime 70Mbps.
Use either of those apps to find the optimal setting of RSRQ, RSRP and SNIR.
A couple of tips - go into the router settings (if you've got a Huawei, use the Huawei Manager app or the 3rd party HuaCtrl app) so make sure the antenna is set to EXTERNAL.
Another tip is to set the receiving signal to just channel 3 (1800Mhz, or 3 and 20 (800Mhz). 3 on its own works best for me. (Using the frequency locking option of the apps)

A brilliant tech video Vince! Content like this is really good for the technophobic. I know that many people would get a lot of out of this - in a previous job I spent many hours trying to talk through the process of this and other gadgets. • @ToxoRetro
      @ToxoRetro 2 роки тому

Not that I know of,@@crappymeal - although I admit I've been out of the game for 6 or 7 years, and tech changes fast.
I know some networks do a family bundle where you can essentially give some of your data to another SIM within that bundle. That could give you a potential option?
Also many Smartphones allow tethering; essentially using your phone's data and turning itself into a mobile hotspot. You could then go for a large data SIM deal. However it'll eat up the phone's battery.
The trouble with phone stores is many will simply bluff their way into selling anything, especially when pressurised for sales stats and commission. I hope Vince can read these replies as he's probably more clued up than me - if not, try again as a fresh comment as he'll get a notification.
Good luck, and I like the name. 😁👍

4G LTE has come a long way, and it was originally designed to be the final step in wireless broadband. As you can see in Vince's vid, a proper permanent solution will work very well, also helps if the ISP has a good deal for your data package.

I live in a rural area, so with three, ended up with the B535, but initially had problems, good connection, 20 mbps down (v good for edge of Bodmin moor), but, I had to reboot or reset at lest once a day, when it went to less than 1 mbps. By chance, I came across a blog for the 535. The guy said for maximum speed, 2 or three settings need to be changed; so, off I went to 192.168.8.1, and in advanced changed the aerial setting to internal, and the network setting to 4g only. Now I have 30mbps! The guy said to never leave the aerial setting on both. I have also changed the aerial setting on auto.
Hope this helps others who have problems, and maybe Vince could try this on his to see what difference these settings make to his router.
Really enjoy your videos, keep it up.

Very good final result with the outdoor areal... the upload was 4x better than our 100Mbps Virgin Media connection which is a pitiful 5Mbps up. Hey Vince! Great video! Just a quick question, nor sure if you have already answered it. But can I use a Mobile Phone Sim card with any mobile router? So essentially taking the SIM out of my phone and inserting it into the router? Do phone companies place restrictions on this, because data only plans are more expensive than a mobile phone sim plan here in Australia. And I was thinking of just getting a mobile phone plan and inserting into the a mobile broadband router. Would it work?

The never much thought about solution could be satellite internet which is blisteringly fast download side but reliant on the landline for upload and control on most systems. I did years back trial a satellite link when I lived in Cornwall and it was very fast download but it lagged having to wait for its uplink control but I imagine nowadays far more advanced.

Ive got the same router with an outside omni-directional aerial and im getting 160mbps down and 20 mbps up. I am down in a dip below the main mast and about 5 miles away from it. if you download the open signal app to your phone then insert the router sim in your phone you can walk around with your phone and find the strongest signal this is particularly handy for finding the best signal outdoors. mounting the omni-directional aerial close to a wall will cause signal bounce and reduce the gain it has to offer so an aerial mast or pole about a foot long will prevent this. it is also adviseable to not increase the length of the cable that comnes with the aerial as its gain will be reduced. playing around with the orientation of the saerial also seems to help a lot particularly placing the aerial in a position where signal bounce from a nearby wall can be reduced, we mounted ours on the front corner of the building sticking out diagonally about half way up the front wall of the house but I used the phone open signal app to find the best signal area around the outside of the house. we are also on the 3 network with smarty mobile. we pay £18 a month for unlimited broardband and the price hasnt increased yet there is no contract and no standing charge to pay because it doesnt need a landline.

Why didn't you use the antennas in the box??? Makes it much stronger!

The one supplied by Three doesn’t include the external antennas.

50 Mbps is very good for 4g lte and should really do for most applications, even hd video streaming. However, when I think of my 1 gbps cable broadband.... as you sais, lte is a nice alternative for all who are not having access to vdsl fibre or cable .....

The SIM card really comes in 4 sizes. In the early beginning they were really credit card size, and that is where the mini SIM is located in. :)

Eek did you check the 3 coverage. I went O2 and get 33mb sec. Same router. 3 was so poor and I can see the mast. Also 3 do lower speeds and then increase until stable I think. 5Ghz is better for most used devices such as netflix.

I seen a while back, there is a router out there that can combine 2 ISP signals yo make it one. That way you can essentially double your speeds.

Not as simple as it sounds. To my knowledge (happy to be proved wrong) no UK LTE providers or even major ISPs offer a bonding service which would be required to double the throughput. You can have two lines and use traffic management to use one or the other but using them both together (especially if different providers) requires another party to bring the two pathways together and send them out as one and do the same in response, this will normally increase latency and come with a cost.

Did anyone else get a questionnaire on the homepage of UA-cam about MyMateVince channel? I ticked everything in there survey that was relevant. E.g, enjoyment, fulfilling, etc. So I hope it helps Vince!

If i were to plug an ethernet cable from that device directly into a ps5/laptop, would it make a difference speed wise?

I can only get Vodafone 4g signal where I live so is it best to order the router from amazon and a data only plan from Vodafone? Or do you think it’s best to get a home broadband packet from Vodafone?
