i am currently nursing my partners calathea back to health. It was underwatered and didnt get enough sun. Hes looking so much better though and is even putting out new leaves after pruning! ♡

Yes, you have bought one of the most demanding calatheas, but the most important thing (other than watering) is humidity; you have to mist them a lot and depending on where you live you will probably need a humidifier. Best of luck.
Thankyou so much for this video. Mine is not doing well at all. I think I will repot it without any fertiliser and a freely draining mix. And yes, distilled water or rain water.
I do have that same plant AKA pin stripe Calathea an she is beautiful. I was fortunate to had found her at Lowe’s for $9.98. My Calathea medallion, Calathea makoyana was purchased at a nursery near me. I do love the Calatheas ,but I do agree they are not for beginners. Love your videos I’ll keep watching. 🌱🌱

Ho, do you fertilize in the fall/winter? If so with what. I have this plant as well as a tristar stromanthe and Calatheas are new to me.
mymiracle79 I only fertilizer drawing the spring and summer when they are actively growing. I’ve been using Miracle-Gro ,but I’m looking to change to some organic fertilizers. With the tristar stromanthe I find it a lot easier then some of my other Calatheas. She is also huge and doing really good. I would try giving the Calatheas 50% humidity ,since they love that tropical feel. Good luck with yours 🌱
It really folds its leaves and move towards the light, I thought I was going crazy.
The first time I realized my first calathea was actually moving-- I took pictures to prove it because no one believed me and I kind of suspected I was losing it, too. Now I've realized that all of my plants move toward/with the light, just none quite as quickly as a calathea! :)

Great info about this gorgeous plant. I just got an ornata, a makoyana, and a white fusion. I've fallen in love with maranta and calathea plants. I have collected 6 since this past spring. I've only killed and replaced one and almost killed another lol. I think I need just a little more humidity but all are well at the moment. :)
You must have the right touch! I started my collection very much the same way. :) And-- mine also always seem to need a bit more humidity, too. :)

I just got one from my aunt. I was not familiar with it. Imagine my surprise when I noticed the leaves up straight. I collect rain water to water my plants.
My daughters gifted me my Calathea Pinstripe as a Mother's Day gift, I adore my plants a great deal, One of many issues is providing humidity for my pinstripe, I live in a small apartment in NY and it tends to be dry in the summer, I wanted to know if I could use a humidifier in my room, how big should the humidifier be? Hey, Paws you're not crazzy my pin folded up on me at night and let down its leaves in the morning. I was waiting for her to humm, she is Such a Diva!
I bought a small Ornata maybe 3 or 4 weeks ago so this video is very helpful for me. I bought this plant because it was beautiful, but it is a handful to take care of. I hope it will grow up healthy, but I did buy it at the wrong time. It's winter and dry in my apartment, so I've been cranking up my humidifier and running almost all the time...just for this plant!
I also like to place my Ornata in front of the humidifier 2x a week, take it to the shower with me so it gets a nice steam. Hahah, it's a handful!

I bought this plant. It’s beautiful! I didn’t do well with it. I’m sure it was not enough light. I read that if you leave the water out it’s safe to use
I would try putting 'Soil Moist' crystals in the potting soil.. they hold 50 xs their weight in water but dint make the soil soggy. And with the expansion and contraction of the crystals the soil gets aerated. These crystals are sold at Lowe's
Kathleen Murphy google those, not sure if they’re all the same (I think they are), I learned in a garden group that they break down and make a neuro toxin 😳

Definitely the most helpful video on calathea ornata! May I ask for more specific tips on lighting? How much light is too much/little? I got mine a week ago and initially it had its leaves up for a long time (only opens in late morning and early afternoon) so I thought it was getting too much light. I moved it to somewhere with less lights and even late at night, the lower leaves are mostly still open. I just can’t figure out if it’s getting enough light. Thanks!
When calatheas don't get enough light, they tend to grow much slower. However, I haven't met an Ornata that grows quickly yet either. So-- for me, I keep my Ornata very close to a north-facing window. It never gets direct sunlight but a lot of indirect bright light for most the day. Its leaves move throughout the day, catching as much light as possible and it does close up in the late afternoon. Can you tell me what direction-facing window is giving your Ornata light?

C. sanderiana is a real species name. C. ornata is another species which you can find only in some botanical garden because it is a much difficult plant to grow. And C. majestic gets four varieties, one of them is roseo_lineata.

do you think that this pinstripe plant would do well in vermont in east/north light? even though my living room is bright, the angle that the sun hits vermont makes it lower light.
I've never seen any of my plants move as much as Beetlejuice (what I named my ornata). But damn also he's a drama queen and a diva I can't figure him out 😭 moved him to a brighter spot of my home I hope it helps him because the ends are shriveling up and idk what that means
If the pink stripes have faded is there anything that can be done to get them looking brighter again?
Woww.. You're maintaining the plant so well 👍🏼 I've the same Ornata at Kolkata, India and its extremely humid here all round the year yet the leaves are turning yellow and eventually drying out. And, of course, the plant is so demanding that I'm almost paranoid all the time and ask myself, What did I do wrong now? 😢
Thank you, and I know the feeling. A new leaf is unraveling right now and already has a slightly yellow tip. I have grouped all of my calatheas together for the winter (the indoor heater can be so drying), and hope it helps.

The new leaves from center of the plant is growing yellow (along with it's stem) but are shiny. Is this how new leaves look before the mature and turn green? Or is something wrong with my plant?

Hi! Lovely plants. What kind of fertilizer do you use? I am using a fish fertilizer and almost out. Thinking of changing if it's available at my local plant nursery.
Actually yours has not reached its full height and maturity. The get to about 2 ft tall and you will know that it matures when the pinstripes turns white. It’s turns from pink to white as it gets older. Mine fairs well in medium light. When it receives too much light, the leaves gets lighter (paler). It does well in an east facing window with a sheer curtain. It’s also likes a lot of humidity and you’re right, it is sensitive to the water. Like you, I use distilled water as well. I run my humidifier everyday specially in winter because the leaves edges get crispy brown tips. I also mist it at least 2-3x a day. I agree with some of the viewers that it is not for beginners because it can be fuzzy. I have 5 different calathea and I use a hygrometer to check the humidity and temperature and I use a moisture meter. I haven’t had to fertilize mine yet and it’s still putting up leaves. I’ll probably do so this spring when I repot it. It likes moist soil so I if I noticed that it’s close to getting dry (that’s when the moisture meter comes in handy,) I water it. Once you get the hang of taking care of it, it becomes addictive and you want to collect different types of calatheas. It’s worth it because they are so beautiful and unique looking!
This is such great information; thanks for sharing it! I can't wait for this one to get a little taller, as it is a bit dwarfed by my medallion-- all of my calatheas are huddled together this winter for humidity, so it is interesting to see them all side by side.

@@emilyryan2396 From what I've read, and what Lynn shared, the lines turn white as the plant matures. Eventually, the pink seems to go away completely.

Hi, Roger! I propagate them through division. They can be grown from seed but I've never attempted that myself though I've seen seeds for sale. However, I haven't made a video about propagating calathea specifically, but I have shown how I propagated my stromanthe through division in a video last year, if you're interested in seeing how I did it.

Great video! I have multiple calatheas that have been doing great for over a year however, now the outer leaves are drooping and the stems are seeming to break up... but only the outside leaves. Could this also be due to the water building up and too less oxygen? Would really appreciate your tips!
Oh, it's hard to say. Could it be that the outer leaves are older and the plant is making room for new growth from the center?
Well I would hope so! If that's a thing they do? I've put them in a new pot a few weeks ago, one seems to be having a rough time the other also still has droopy leaves but is producing flowers... isn't that contradictory?

Hi, Diane! I have a calathea exactly in the spot you are talking about. Instead of sheer curtains, I have some fiddle leaf figs filtering the light, but it seems to be very happy there. I even have a few that get some direct morning light. If I notice the plant is curling its leaves from too much sun, I do move them back a bit. Otherwise, mine seem to do well with very bright indirect light.

Hi just purchased one of these last week and feel lucky because it has finally adjusted to my home near a grow light and with indirect sun, I want to a terra cotta , any suggestions on how much bigger of a pot I should move it to? She 4 inch nursery pot now but anxious to move out before watering
Congratulations on your new plant! I usually pot up 1-2 inches when it's time to repot, no more no less. From what I've read/learned from people in the plant community here is that if the pot is too small, it can stunt growth and if it's too big, it can leave the soil moist for too long, which can cause other problems. I hope this is helpful! :)

For me my ornata just gave up on me , i think its hard to grow and also calathea elliptica vittata which is also hard to grow, which means if we do anything wrong with them, they not forgive or came back, they not give second chance
Have had one for a couple months now and the leaves are curling and going brown/crispy. At the same time there is a new leaf growing. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, I have a bad feeling the new growth will go the same way.
Are you using distilled water? Calatheas are also really picky about humidity. Definitely a handful at times.

I just purchased my ornata with other calatheas for almost a week now. I mist them everyday, and now i just downloaded a humidity/temp sensors and it says that the humidity is above 40% here, do I still have to mist them everyday? I'm from the Philippines and it's basically a tropical country. and the lowest temp from where I live gets to 18° (sometimes) but it's usually 26°c to 31°c. I don't have a humidifier, do i still need to make a pebble tray with water?
There's a lot of different ideas around how to keep the humidity up around calatheas. Some people have really good luck with humidity trays and others don't. This may be because of differences in environments that are hard to measure. Just like humidity trays, some people have great luck with misting the plants while others have trouble. It sounds like it is nice and warm where you are, which is great. You may not need to mist everyday if the humidity is already above 40%-- maybe test it out and see if you can go a day between misting?
Addy Beez hi um it's been almost a month since i bought my calathea plants and my ornata plant doesnt seem to grow. It has 6 leaves when i bought it and it's still the same now, unlike my stromanthe it has been growing like crazy, growing new leaves week. I water them once a week and mist them almost everyday. Should I repot my ornata and give some osmocote fertilizer? Please help

I have had the best luck with roseopictas, such as medallions. Someone asked me to rank my calatheas from hardiest to easiest in terms of care and I think the medallion and dottie have been the easiest so far. But--with calatheas--who knows? One is always giving me trouble somewhere. 😉 The Ornata, from my experience, is very difficult to care for long term.

Can I use collected rain water to water the plants?
I've heard that rainwater is great for watering tropical plants. I haven't ever tried it myself but am hoping to collect rainwater this year. Unfortunately, it seems like it might be a dry season here.
I don’t know why this plant hates me so much. My other Calathea is happy and has given me no problems. Almost all of my ornata’s leaves have some browning and yellowing but now it’s trying to grow a new leaf. It seemed to really take a bad turn after I fertilized it. I diluted it in half and only water with distilled water (although I didn’t at first). I just want her to love me 😭
Oh, I really do understand this feeling! I dilute my fertilizer a lot now (around an 1/8) because of how sensitive calatheas are just in general. To everything! I don't even fertilize once a month at this point, though my medallion handles it a lot better. My ornata (and fusion white actually) is looking a little worse for wear after winter so I am going to be refreshing the soil soon and using worm castings to enrich the soil. I do see some growth but nothing like last year so, I'm hoping this helps. Good luck with your ornata! :)
Hi there! I got this plant too online, and the new growth has had some transparency in its leaves, I'm not sure what this is. I have watered it once since I got it bevause it was very damnmp when it arrived. I have had I now for about a month. Any ideas? I think the soil is not right too
Oh this plant is gorgeous! I have one at the moment that I’m starting to struggle with. Two leaves are completely healthy but the others are a little curly and brown at the tips. Hi, Tash. It is one of my favorite calatheas and also-- Ornata's are really fussy. I did a video on calathea leaf problems if you're interested in checking out some photos/video of some of my calatheas and problems I've had over the years (ua-cam.com/video/hX3cyy-zUl0/v-deo.html). For me, my Ornata gets crispy when it isn't getting enough humidity. Right now, I'm using essential oil diffusers, without the essential oil, to provide my calatheas with more humidity. Crispy leaves can also be a sign over fertilization, so that may be something to think about too. Good luck! :)
I just bought my first calathea and it is fairly mature. One of the top leaves looks like it had a chunk bitten off it. I'm wondering what you did with your damaged leaves when you received your calathea? Did you cut them off at the base of the plant? Thank you!
I have two or three pretty damaged leaves on my ornata, toward the bottom of the plant. They look like the result of sun exposure mixed with being crushed/damaged by handling/shipping. I don't always remove the damaged leaves from my calatheas right away. Often, they will dry up quicker than other leaves, having been damaged, and I remove them then. If they dry up, you can gently tug the leaf away and it will come right out. However, if you want to cut it before it dries up, I'd cut it as close to the soil as possible. Good luck!

Some grocery stores have stations where you refill the jug. It's less a dollar, often less than 50 cents per gallon. I have never spent more than $5 a month on distilled water for my plants.
I live in Ireland, No shortage of Rain water here.
I got mine a week ago and some of the leaves were completely curled and they still are. And some of the other leaves edges are curling in. I've done some googling but can't figure it out.
Are the leaves also discoloring/turning brown and crispy, or are they only curling?
@@AddyBeez they were just curling at first. I have tried putting it in different areas of my house. Putting it next to a humidifyer, misting the leaves, etc. Now one leaf is turning translucent- still no brown crispy edges. I have North, West and East facing windows in my house and the rest of my plants seem to be fine.
Hi Rachel, Were you able to pinpoint the cause? I think we have the same problem. No brown tips on my Ornata too but instead the tips turned white and are curled (and crispy).
You need to use bottled water or filtered water and it needs to be room temperature or lukewarm temperature water and rain water that is good too, a humidifier would be a good option and a water thermometer to check the water moisture of the plant. Terracotta puts are bad because it take up the water the plant needs.
Should I water my Calathea everyday? I keep trying to google this but it just says “water regularly.” Does that mean once a day or once every few days or once a week?
This is a great question. Humidity and temperature, along with other factors, play a role in the moisture level of potting soil, and since these differ across geographical region, and even households, it is hard to give the same watering schedule to everyone. It can be tricky to know when to water a plant but there are a few things you can do to see if your plant needs water or not. For me, I use a few different methods though I think you really only need one. If you dip your fingers 2-3 inches into the potting soil and it's dry, it is usually a good idea to water your plant. Otherwise, if your calathea's roots stay too wet, the roots won't be able to take in oxygen and it will start to suffocate. A fast draining potting soil can help keep this from happening, though you may need to water more often. So, once the first 2-3 inches of potting soil are dry, you will want to give your calathea water. I hope this is helpful! :) (Edited to add that I water most of my calatheas once to twice per week in a household with about 50 percent humidity and between 68-78 degrees F).
i know this video is old but i saw a calathea at the store fell in love but it was so damaged how did you bring it back to life ! I want to save mine!
I used distilled water and a humidifier to keep its leaves and roots happy. I also used worm castings as a top dressing in place of liquid fertilizer. Good luck with your calathea! 😊

Check for pests! Spider mites. Ugh. They are hard to get rid of. Do you have a humidifier? I know it’s different but I have a storm anthem triostar and the humidifier is blowing on it lol

What’s the pot size you recommend for calatheas?
Hi, Esha. From, my experience, it really depends on the size of the calathea's rootball. You want to make sure you have some room on all sides of the rootball in the pot, as calathea produce rhizomes under the soil that grow out to the side from the existing rootball. From that rhizome, new plant growth will break the surface soil. However, you can have a pot that is too big, especially if it's not porous--the higher volume of soil in larger pots takes longer to dry which may keep the roots of your calathea damp for too long and result in problems.
What do you do with the leaf that are kinda dry out??
I usually let them fully dry up and then tug them away once they are pretty much dead. Sometimes, though, I'll trim them away, cutting as close to the soil as I can.
Question: My Ornata seems to be doing pretty fine, except for the new leafs it produces.. They get really crispy on the edges and it keeps on going till the entire leaf dries out. Do zou have any idea why that is the case?.. It doesnt get any direct sun
Is “distilled”water the same as “demineralized” water? You buy it in the car accessories areas?
I don't know the answer to this-- so I did a Google search. It looks like they are both purified forms of water but differ in purification methods (www.westlab.com.au/blog/2015/07/29/the-difference-between-distilled-and-demineralised-water).

So-- I've been reading up on why my monstera put out a few brown leaf tips and saw that one of the recommendations was to use demineralized water! Now I just have to find a way to get a hold of some.
I’m using demineralized water only because in my country it is not possible to buy water that is labelled as distilled;) Could you please share the links you’ve found? I am still not 100% sure it is a good one as it says it is good for irons and cars and nothing about flowers. Hope they do not add any ingredient that could be harmful to plants in the long run. Nothing happened still but it’s a short period of time and I could not find info in internet saying this is for sure good for plants like calatheas. I also use this water for misting my plants. I am doing experiments as I have 2 calatheas and on one I am using rain water (collected by me during rainy days) and on the second the demineralized one. I will let you know the results after some time:) what a hobby🤪😜👍
How often should it be watered?
The amount of water it needs depends on the time of year and temperature. I check by pushing my finger about two inches into the soil to see if it's dry. If it is, I water it. This could be anywhere from every 4 to 8 days on average. Since calatheas are really picky about watering and can suffer from root rot pretty easily, checking the soil with your fingers or a moisture meter is definitely helpful! From my experience with calatheas, overwatering can cause damage that is harder, even impossible, to correct than underwatering when first assessing how much water it will need.
Is organic soil okay to use for my calatheas when it's time to repot it? Cause that's the only soil I have. The only other soil that's readily available in my city is garden soil, should I use that instead?
Is organic the brand? I think if you have access to a potting soil, that would work best. Can you add any perlite? This will help with drainage. Thanks for the comment!
Addy Beez it's just a regular organic soil that is home made but if i order perlite/pumice online to mix with my ordinary unbranded organic soil, will the plants still survive? Thank you so much. 😊 and can I use pumice instead of perlite?
Mine has been struggling and I have no idea what to do! The leaves are getting crunchy and I’m confused because I water it. I guess I’m not watering enough. They’re also not in direct Sunlight, which I read was bad for them because they can burn. Help please!!
Hi! 😀I am so sorry to get back to you so late--I've been having trouble getting comments. My ornata demands pretty high humidity (bare minimum 50%) or it start to get crispy. I also stick with distilled water because otherwise, the leaves get burned. How is your calathea doing now?

I bought one from a seller on Etsy and another from a seller on Amazon. The first I ordered quite a while ago, knowing shipment would be delayed. The second I bought a week ago and it should arrive early next week. This is my second time purchasing calatheas online. The first time, I ordered two and both arrived with spider mite infections, so I am keeping my fingers crossed with these.
my calathea ornatas tips are curling and shriveling inwards, is there anything i can do to stop this?
Ornatas are pretty finicky, but then I guess all calatheas are (but I would argue some really are more difficult). The first thing I would do is make sure I am using distilled water on the plant, as filters and even professionally purified water don't seem to remove all of the minerals and salts that calatheas react to. The second thing I would do is check humidity, which can be more difficult to solve. I have tried pebble water trays without success and no longer mist the plant because it can actually cause problems with fungus, etc. I have used humidifiers in the past but my ornata isn't in a space that I want to worry about the expense and care of a humidifier (they really do have to be cleaned every few days because they can grow mold in the humidifier chamber). Right now, I am adding humidity to small space with my calatheas with an essential oil diffuser sans the essential oil. I have a few around my house and it has done wonders for my fusion white in the last few months-- I'll probably post a video about it soon. The last thing I would think about is fertilizer. Calatheas are extremely sensitive to fertilizer burn, at the roots, which results in brown leaf edges and tips. Right now, I am top dressing my plants with worm castings to feed them instead of using a chemical fertilizer. I hope this is helpful!

I bought it from a retail seller in my area, though I do buy a lot of calatheas from Etsy sellers these days.

Is filtered water ok?
It depends, from my understanding. Distilled water should remove most elements that you find in water through the distillation process whereas filtering might leave some in, such as fluoride. My water is pretty mineral rich so I just do the distillation myself now instead of buying it. If the plant has trouble with filtered water, it might take a while to see it show up in the leave, but you will likely know if your calathea can tolerate it or not over time by seeing if any burning starts to show up in the leaves. I wish I had a better answer but there are a lot of variables around water.

It does raise its leaves toward the ceiling at night. In the very early morning, close to dawn, the leaves start to lower again.

Hmm. From what I've read, brown tips are usually a sign of low humidity or tap water problems. If you use tap water for your ornata, try letting it sit out for 24 hours before watering your plant with it, or switch to distilled water. If it's humidity, a lot of people use humidity trays. Good luck!

I purchased the pin stripe and the medallion at Lowe's, the STRUGGLE is real. Your humidity in your house has to be always on point if not their leaves get's all crispy and ugly. I purchased a humidifier hoping it would help...not so much. I will not buy again, but they are beautiful plants. Am getting away from tropical plants, they require extra stuff to make them stay beautiful.
I haven't talked much about the humidity struggle yet because you are right. The struggle is all too real. I didn't have as much luck with a humidifier as I'd hoped either. Right now, I am taking them into the bathroom for steam showers a couple of times a week.

Same here. I live in the desert side of India. It was painful to watch it slowly wither... finally I planted it ground in the moistest corner of my garden. It seems to be doing okay now but all leaves are already half damaged. I hope it will pick up eventually... but never buying any more of these though. Here they cost a lot as well.
when it grows on ground it reach more than 4 feet high .I mean in tropics.

The species name of this Calathea is Calathea sanderiana not ornata. It was a long time mistake made in the horticulture world.
Ah, that is very interesting. I thought sanderiana was a variety of the ornata-- kind of like the roseo-lineata. Very interesting to hear!

This species is one of the worst to take care. Very fussy and almost everytime has a spider. I do not recommend it.
