@@targetoz5470 feel when flying is VERY important. Thank why I said I like the Vcontroler so much. It has a incredible feel. Unfortunately the older radios have potential amateur gimbals and very hard to get a super smooth feel but! You can take the retention bar off and add some Teflon to it that will help with the smoothness.
Anything with Edge/Open Tx is hands down best. You can do anything. Incredibly powerful. Plenty of support on the internet. I don't bother using my Spektrum TX's any more.
FrSky x20s HD and x20s have been treating me well. Gps modules, third axis gimbals, great receivers, all possible, for a fraction of these radios reviewed.
not sure what 16ch software is but the Vcontorl has around 80ch configuration. The IX14 is only 14ch. But I don’t know what you would ever need more then 20ch even in turbines jets. I never go over more then 17ch.
Haha Spektrum knew what they were doing with the ix12. It was so bad that they knew people who bought it would almost immediately buy the ix14. They made some money. Luckily I survived with my DX9 and resisted the ix temptation. Made the switch to X20S and it made me feel so dumb for staying with Spektrum so long.
Thank you! The NX8 is definitely a nice radio! I prefer the feel of the older DX9 better, but the option and programmable features of the eight is fantastic.

I made the comment that once he's played with Jeti he'll forget about his Spektrum gear. Guess what he is using since completing that customer build?
I use two radios. Older Spektrum dx6 for simming , JumperT18( radiomaster T16) for flying. Older radios get relegated to the simulator to save wear and tear on the flying radio. I adjust the sticks length and tension to be about same .
Thanks for the great video. And, it true. When I got back in the hobby in April, I forgot a lot of stuff. Hobby Shop was trying to sell me on an NX8 but then that nosey customer jumps in and says, "You only need 6 channels for a helicopter.". So now, I'm stuck without Rescue. As for getting a TX that others in your field fly, it's true. A lot of the guys at a nearby field are using VControl and makes buddy boxing very quick and easy. Lots of new fliers there have been saying how greatful they are for having a buddybox to help them improve.
Thank you for watching! A lot of guys have it in their mind. You only need six channels, but that’s just not true. Technically yes! You can fly any helicopter with a 6 channel radio. But! Having that 7th and 8th channel is very nice! Being able to buddy box with guys at the field is very important and helpful! Always look and see what radios other fly at your field.
@@deersbrook4485that’s because the NX6 has a 7th channel that allows for rescue to be used. But you can do anything else even selectable flight mode without that 8th channel.
Seems like its really hard to beat the Radiomaster stuff on paper? I'm Flip flopping between getting the Boxer or the TX16S. Coming from an OOOOOLD ass Turnigy 9x that's beat to hell and back (and upgraded with ER9X firmware). The thing I like about the Radiomaster stuff is that it kinda reminds of my Turnigy, being fully customizable, and having the JR style back port can take external modules. I can get the Boxer with the built in 1 watt ELRS, and throw on an external 4-in-1 for all my really old stuff. I fly mostly fixed wing stuff in the 400 and 800mm range, have flown some small copters but kind moved away from that. Do want to get into the quads though. Is the new spectrum stuff even competing with ELRS? I've always found spectrum to be good quality, but IMO over priced for what it is. Its sort of like the iphone of the RC world, and that kinda annoys me an an android kinda guy lol.
So my personal experience with the radiomaster TX16S was not great. I had a few problems and crashed three Helis because of radio loss. I also had two different gimbal springs break (stock gimbals) so I lost all trust and confidence in the radio and never used it again. I know some guys like them and they have great experience with them. I personally don’t like all the programming to make a heli or plane work. It’s a lot! They feel cheap, but so does the NX6,NX8 and NX10. My favorite spektrum radio is the IX14. Yes it’s expensive but well worth it. It’s a android system so if you like that it’s perfect. You can plug a module in the back and use it for many things. Just my opinion. I also like Vcontorl but you can only use it with Vbar.
@@westhobbiesrc8051 yeah the 4-in-1 module isn't super reliable because all the protocols on it are reverse-engineered, but ELRS has an extremely robust link, probably what I would trust more than almost anything else for bigger models.
@@westhobbiesrc8051 Of course your experience is your own, but I feel your experience of the TX16S is not representative of the radio. It sounds like yours was faulty, I've never had signal loss on mine even when flying at a field where other people using Spectrum have lost models due to mysterious connection losses. In 4 years I have never had a signal loss, never had any problems with the gimbals. You can get them with the 4 in 1 module or ELRS built in, or like me you can buy a cheap ELRS module that plugs into its module bay. ELRS is a good, very modern radio protocol which will do very long range so great for FPV. ELRS is probably going to slowly take over from other protocols. I think the TX16S is definitely for people who enjoy tinkering with the radio though. EdgeTX offers a lot more flexibility than other radios. You can make it do just about anything but it's likely that people at the field are using something else and you'll have to do a bit of searching and watching youtube videos to find out how to do things with it. If you don't like the feel of the TX16S because it's too large, or feel you don't need a large colour touchscreen, there's the smaller TX12 and Boxer.
I think a lot of folks got burned by the first batches of the tx16s which genuinely had a lot of issues with the buttons and that ribbon cable inside. Also the pots and sliders were all floppy and garbage. They seem to be solid now, just received a tx16s mk2 4in1 max with the ag01 gimbals and got it all updated and what not. It's also important with the edgetx ecosystem to pick a solid air link, I wouldn't fly anything I really care about on the 4in1. It's got its uses though. Everything I care about goes on elrs which I have hundreds of hours on with 0 problems.
I like my Spektrum iX14 and a DX9 I'm keeping as a backup. I just spent most of the day configuring my RadioMaster TX16S and hated it. It has way too many settings and feels really cheap.
@@miksterr I did the update on my IX14 and it does show 20ch! I still don’t understand how it’s controlling 20ch as there is only so many switch’s and output so maybe it just allows you to configuration multiple servos together? I need to get a 20 channel receiver and try it.
I used to fly Spektrum until I got into FPV about a decade ago. When your radio link really matters that's what separates the good from the also ran and I wouldn't fly anything I cared about with Spektrum these days. LOS pilots are a lot more forgiving I think. EdgeTX is a little more difficult to learn but if you can think it, you can program it and it has great support for the truly bulletproof links like Crossfire and ELRS.
I fly Spektrum & Mikado, VControl is expensive but hands down the better overall package because of the software/hardware integration and online support.
I saw a comparison in range, which is also important. The FrSky TDR18 and Radiomaster TX16S had way longer range than Spectrum. I was kind of disapointed in Spectrum. They reached before signal loss: Radiomaster TX16S - 6,6 km FrSky TDR18 - 5,7 km Jeti DS24 - 5,5 km Spectrum IX20 - 1,4 km JR/Deeforce 28X 1,2 km
Nice review. Have some questions. 1) what is difference between Spektrum NX and iX? 2) Why is forward programming "important" that is, is it a 'must" to have it?
Thank you! The difference between IX and NX is the operating system. IX series radios are android based with full color touchscreen basically tablet interfaces. It makes programming and navigating the menus so much nicer than the older scroll wheel and buttons. We have the technology now, and incredible options with any type of forward programming. Meaning when you’re at the field if you need to make an adjustment, you can get right on your radio and adjust what is needed without needing to hook up or do any computer work. And having the incredible program ability that we have in these newer radios for tonight utilize what is there.
Great video! Thanks, when you say that that spektrum ix12 vs ix14 is more slower, you mean to setup? Sorry, my english is not very good and sometimes i don't get all.
Boot up time is 3 minutes on the IX12 and under a minute in the IX14. Also when navigating the menus, the 12 has a lag to where where the 14 is instant.
I fly RC planes but have just brought my very rc helicopter it is a omp m2 helicopter can i use my DX6I with the helicopter. can't afford to change my radio yet ❤ your channel.
welcome to the heli world! yes, you can use your DX6i with the M2. you will just need a DSMX satellite. witch my S2 radio setup and it will be the same for the M2.
I doubt you would try this at somepoint since i doubt you have one, but for me, I have found radiomaster's Zorro better for flying heli then my tx16s that also being due to my smaller hands, and with the internal elrs never had any range issue on plane or heli

I also have rescue automatic which is activated automatically without pushing the switch. it activates automatically just before the helicopter touches the ground.
Jeti makes a very nice radio as well! You can see all of that with the newer spektrum radios as well with no added sensors exception of GPS you have to add a GPS unit for that. But the automatic rescue is a very nice feature of jeti.

I have a DX6 and DX9 but have been itching to upgrade my radio. The NX transmitters don't feel like much of an upgrade over the DX. I had been eying the iX14 but it's almost 4x the price of the TX16. My first two heli's are Blade, so I realli don't know anything about VBar/IKon/Brain/etc or the Mikado radios. It would be great if you did a high level video explaining it! I'd really love to pickup a radio at IRCHA though.
I would highly recommend upgrading your radio! The NX8 is not really an upgrade over your DX9 other than your update, ability and program of ability. Personally! I think the DX9 Feels Way better in the hands. Now! The IX14 is Incredible! Highly recommend it. The quality between the IX14 and TX16S is on match and not comparable. The Vcontroller is a very nice radio as well and I really like being able to set everything up right from the transmitter. I’ll be at IRCHA as well! Hope to see you there!

What was the issue with Futaba? I’m in the middle of possibly leaving Futaba behind after 40+ years because I can’t figure out where they are going in the future. Spektrum is my alternative.
It’s a long story but long story short, I flew futaba for 10 years. I bought a new radio from them. After I crashed a prop plane because of signal loss I said oh bad RX. I flew some more prop planes no issues. I flew my Jet ($20k) and lost it because of the same issue. Radio loss. I sent the radio back to futaba and they said nothing was wrong. I flew some cheaper planes to test and no issues. Went to fly anther Jet and same thing. 3 minutes into the flight all radio was lost. This time I put a X under the battery. I sent it back in, they said “we had some radios go out that where unlocked” “we will send you a brand new radio” so I got the “new” radio and looked under the battery. The X was still there! I called them back and they said “sorry, we can sell you a new radio” “and we will send you a new RX” I said no thank you. I tossed the radio and will never support a company that won’t stand behind there products when flying any type of plane let alone expensive planes.
Thanks for the reply, many UA-camrs don’t. This is very helpful. I will eventually this winter be changing to the iX 14. I won’t be using Futaba any longer. I see dishonesty, lack of support and poor management there. Futaba seems to be going backward and Spektrum is going forward. Great videos by the way. I’ve taken a renewed interest in my helis thanks to you. ( oh and at 65 I find the voice commands of Spektrum radios extremely helpful. Something Futaba has completely dropped the ball on)
@@wildgoobsid5 you’re welcome! I try my best to answer every comment I get! I see the same in futaba, that’s the biggest reason I switched many years ago. I’m not paid or anything from them it’s just my experience! The voice on the IX14 (any spektrum radio) is awesome! And with the IX14 you can make it say what ever you want as well as the switch’s are touch meaning if you forgot what you put on that switch you can just touch it and will tell you what you have programmed. I’m glad you got back into helis! Welcome back!

I had one for a short time. Really nice radio! Feels kinda weird as it’s very boxy but solid! Great gimbal feel, switch’s are solid and firm. Setup is a lot more involved then spektrum and takes some getting use to but I would recommend the X20S over the Radiomaster TX16S any day.

I was leaning towards the nx8 after watching lots of tutorials and I was planning on using their planes first. All set. Visited the club and they are big on radiomaster.
Wondering what peoples thoughts are on The NX line (and also iX14) that have just received major updates? More channels, more programming etc?
@@miksterr I did the update on my IX14 and it does show 20ch! I still don’t understand how it’s controlling 20ch as there is only so many switch’s and output so maybe it just allows you to configuration multiple servos together? I need to get a 20 channel receiver and try it.
All good info. I have 3 of the ones u have. Spectrum for planes. Mikado for helis..
Thank you! I see my self switching my helis to Vcontrol and leaving my IX14 for my planes but I love the IX14. It’s been a fantastic radio!
Definitely! Mikado makes an incredible radio and incredible quality! I personally think it’s the best feeling radio on the market.
I saw a comparison in range, which is also important. The FrSky TDR18 and Radiomaster TX16S had way longer range than Spectrum. I was kind of disapointed in Spectrum.
They reached before signal loss:
Radiomaster TX16S - 6,6 km
FrSky TDR18 - 5,7 km
Jeti DS24 - 5,5 km
Spectrum IX20 - 1,4 km
JR/Deeforce 28X 1,2 km
Frsky X20S has been treating me well Tandem Receivers are great

Getting a Nimbus 550 after a 10 year hiatus. I have a DX9 Black. Is it worth getting a new IX14? What am I missing out on if I just keep my DX9?
@@jawsmod it depends on what you want. If you want all the telemetry and forward programming and easier setup with a great radio get the IX14. Is it something you need no, is a great radio and better hen the DX9? Yes, I flew a DX9 for many years. Went to the IX12 and then IX14 and never looked back.
I have spektrum radiomaster and now I've been using it for a long time jeti ds12 spirit edition (16channel) is fantastic.without any sensor i see in real time and in the log radio : altitude helicopter, rpm rotor, tension,GPS lat and long, vibration helicopter, tension bec,ecc ecc and i have no telemetry.
Jeti it really surprised me.
Radiomaster tx16s mark2 max i don't use it why if you don't set the rssi well you can have problems.
jeti is connect and fly, spektrum it doesn't have all those functions.
@@westhobbiesrc8051 no rescue automatic is one fumction spirit gt or spirit gtr, and also of the geolink v2.

tell me what problems you had with tx16s? I'm not using it because I've read about many problems, gray areas in the radio signal etc. I'm afraid of losing the signal. I have a new one that has never been used with a 4in1 module

JR made some great radios
Currently flying my old 11x dsm2
I still have my JR 9303. Converted it to DSM2 when it came out and flew it for many many years.
They lied to me on my radio sent me a new one and it was the same one. Never helped after that. The IX14 is a fantastic radio, great support from HH.
I had my first DX6 last year and fell in love with the voice warnings etc. At my age(65) it is an awesome help to keep track of what I’m doing during a flight. The touch switch will be even better.
Where is Futaba?

What are your thoughts on the FrSky x20s. I'm wanting to upgrade my DX8 transmitter before flying again :)
Hey what about Futaba . Lol I have the futaba 16IZ . Didn’t really want to spend $750 on a radio but i airways few futaba . The guys at my field fly the V control . $1400 for a radio was a bit much . Been out of flying for over 13 years . So didn’t want to go crazy .

Heli's; whichever feels best in your hands and fits your budget. Planes, and Heli's; same, but consider the Radiomaster Zorro if you like game controller type feel. Two others that are not listed here, cost less, have more functionality (900mhz + 2.4ghz), better quality, is the FrSky Tandem X18 and X20.
I was leaning towards the nx8 after watching lots of tutorials and I was planning on using their planes first. All set. Visited the club and they are big on radiomaster.
