    Nice! I believe Gossard used a DOD FX40B graphic eq pedal during this era too. Scooped with the highs and lows up, it really does draw out his fuzz textures.

    You're right so many ways to get a sound. My Alive sound is either TS9 in clean channel or CH3 on my MKV. I also saw somewhere that Stone of more recent times was playing an origin slid rig or Cali 76. Love my Cali 76 for Black clean tones. Also works well to push the dirt too. The most important things are using the right tunings, playing the right notes and then having the right dynamics. Gear comes 4th place easily. As we saw with the hot cake. Wasn't as good but still sounded better than most cover bands playing Alive.

    For a cheap option, I grabbed my Joyo Ultimate Drive (OCD clone) and a Soul Food, ran the latter into the former and it got very close to the kinds of tones you want for PJ (Guitars were a hot-rodded Epiphone SG Special 2 and a MIM Player's Strat into Fender Bassbreaker15 & Laney Cub12r 15watt combos).
    The Joyo costs about 50p and a used Soul Food can be had for 35-50 quid tops. Hope that helps any budget conscious players out there keen to get their Jam on :)

      @@LetsPlayAll thanks for the answer. So you manage to have a great Pearl Jam tone with the default settings. The sonic distortion is only fizzy if you run the tone knob above 9 o'clock. With a big British amp loud(el-34 or kt-66/88's 84's are terrible with it), volume pinned, tone very low and gain where you want it it sounds fantastic. I won't call it underrated because it is a situational pedal but yeah if you have a rig it can work with it really really works.

      @LetsPlayAll  3 роки тому

      i was more giving an opinion on the sd9 as its a really good pedal that people dismiss because it doesn't work at bedroom levels or use it with a 84 loadee combo. It wasn't a comment about his tone more that people dismiss that pedal frequently and it is fantastic at gig volumes. But yeah for pearl jam it wouldn't be my first choice. For the heavier end of grunge floating into sludge metal and stoner it works fantastically.

    Kind of feel like all of these "how to get this person's tone" videos could more aptly be named "how to approximate this person's signal chain" because the final and arguably most distinct ingredient of anyone's tone is in their hands. Getting the signal chain is an important part because it gets you close enough that your ears and hands can do the final work (changing up how you pick, how you incorporate vibrato, etc.)

Stone likely used a Les Paul into a Marshall JCM800 2203 and maybe a TS9 or Rat (typical 80s metal rig as he and Jeff were huge metalheads), giving him a full sound but with plenty of top end crunch.
