Alessandro Stinis I use the pedal train volto. It’s a rechargeable power supply and has been great for me, fits my nano board perfectly and no extra wires to plug in!
I tend to have my drive on my Hotcake below halfway as I find when I turn it up the pedal becomes more of a fuzz than a rhythm crunch. Then I boost it with a TS9.
Hi. Your sound it's very close at Stone's sound. In my pedal board I've ocd, and i'll try use my les paul + ocd in hp mode + JCM800 for Ten 's album sound. Can you tell me ocd setting for this? Thanks
Thanks mate tbh i can't remember my OCD settings but would have been LP setting with them mostly around noon, but i now use this pedal for my Ten sound - ua-cam.com/video/AeH6kQmNeOA/v-deo.html
The sonic distortion is only fizzy if you run the tone knob above 9 o'clock. With a big British amp loud(el-34 or kt-66/88's 84's are terrible with it), volume pinned, tone very low and gain where you want it it sounds fantastic. I won't call it underrated because it is a situational pedal but yeah if you have a rig it can work with it really really works.
i was more giving an opinion on the sd9 as its a really good pedal that people dismiss because it doesn't work at bedroom levels or use it with a 84 loadee combo. It wasn't a comment about his tone more that people dismiss that pedal frequently and it is fantastic at gig volumes. But yeah for pearl jam it wouldn't be my first choice. For the heavier end of grunge floating into sludge metal and stoner it works fantastically.
Haha for the Ten sounds only I found that the best sound....BUT it depends on your use case. I rarely use my SL drive live, and I use my Tumnus and OCD for 90% of my UA-cam vids and nothing else. If I’m practising I’ll sometimes use my Vox practise amp and that has some great tones in it! For home use your Marshall modelling app will get you there for sure! Also bear in mind I’ve got a really good tube amp so the pedal is only half the story. Bottom line if it sounds close to your ears with what you have then use that 😀🤘
Putting the tube screamer before the SL drive would defo be the same effect. I think I have a tube screamer type but I’m planning on getting a jcm800 type pedal so I’ll have a video for this too soon!
Warren Millar Oo sure, must have edited that bit out haha. Always the least OD into the most OD so signal chain is Tumnus (or other Klon type) - OCD - SL Drive. So for that pairing Tumnus -> SL Drive
Thanks man, it’s not a guitar effect it’s a lofi type of effect they would have added afterwards. You could try to emulate it by taking all the bass out of your sound possibly?
Hello again! Great video, good to see what you're using in the band. I have an SL Drive too, and absolute beast of a pedal. I use my TS-9 to push it for my Ten Stone tone, sounds great. What are you setting your SL Drive to? It's difficult to tell with the perspex knobs!
@@LetsPlayAll Ah cool - will try those settings at next rehearsal. Yeah, the gig in August was epic thanks, pub was rammed and it went off better than we could be hoped! Matt Klein hey Matt! I haven’t changed any of the internal dip switches so mines on the out of the box setting which I’m guessing is super lead without looking at the instructions!
Which pedals shall we use for our 2 Guitar Players? We're a Grunge Coverband from Germany and we don't know how to arange the Guitars for the Song Jeremy
Loads to choose from! For Jeremy you could just use a distortion pedal tbh. Stone and Mike both go from clean to distorted. Or stack a low gain and medium gain pedal as per this vid
@@yann-timoschwartz3299 no worries! well the SL drive is the only marshall in a box type pedal i've tried and it suits my needs and my setup so i can't say for sure as I've never played an Egnater. If that takes pedals well then it should do the job, but there's lots of other marshall in a box style pedals that i'm sure would do the job just as well. I need to do a video on marshall in a box type pedals!
dragonfistjedi so awesome! I’ve been using a tumnus for a while but am going to try the archer for a bit on my board! Plus the Archer really does the “dissident” style tone he uses on the Vs album too 🤘
Really nice video and I learned a lot. I absolutely fell in love with the Archer-OCD combination !!! The DOD light overdriven tone is heavenly good ☺️. I would really like to see you making another video using a Tube Screamer as PJ are listed among big TS users. I got myself a mini TS and could extract some really great tones, but for PJ I mostly use an OCD clone to get closer and a JCM 800. I don't find how I can use the TS for PJ songs.
Adil CHEHABI thanks man glad you enjoyed it! The TS pedal really needs to be used with the right amp (they used them with Marshall amps to really push the amps into more saturated OD) so you could use it before any sort of Marshall pedal to stack the tone that way if you don’t have a Marshall type amp?
Kind of feel like all of these "how to get this person's tone" videos could more aptly be named "how to approximate this person's signal chain" because the final and arguably most distinct ingredient of anyone's tone is in their hands. Getting the signal chain is an important part because it gets you close enough that your ears and hands can do the final work (changing up how you pick, how you incorporate vibrato, etc.)
Yea it’s just a starting point. Although tbh I just use the Funny Little Boxes 1991 for most overdrive stuff now for PJ and beyond haha so this vids a little outdated tbh
@@LetsPlayAll Either way, I'm an absolute sucker for this type of thing. I don't know if you watched the Yellow Ledbetter clip from Howard Stern posted yesterday, but Mike McCready's rig now is shockingly modulation heavy. A chorus, multiple flange options, univibe, vibrato, phaser. It's nuts.
@@McMorgan1312 I haven’t had a chance yet but yea I heard some chorus on the new album! Very cool. He’s used phaser and univibe a fair bit over the years. Flanger too? Haha awesome

@@LetsPlayAll thanks. I had read something about Stone possibly using a Chorus pedal but was sure for this song or not. Your tone is great. Totally nailed it.
I like he says xotic/tumnus arent cheap...cos they kind of are and most of other dudes would use them as such and then come up with some boutique 400dollar pedals as not cheap...cool...btw...dunno your name. One more thing,..whatever the pedal..that amp does it all..so..u could try with some cheaper amp too to make it more adequate..like cheap laney or line6..digital amps..
I love my Tumnus, Hotcake, OCD. But my secret weapon is the Jetter Traindrive. Marshall Trainwreck tone yeaaaaah! Got a DOD250 on the way. Should be interesting
Cheers mate! Seems like a classic booster/OD pedal. Happy New Year! For my money, "Vitalogy" is the most complete PJ record, and features some of Mike & Stone's best recorded guitar tones. Saw 'em live around 97-98. Amazing. Perfect mix, rip-roaring loud and tight as - but still with that classic PJ spontaneity. They walked the fine line between a tight rock band and a loose rock n roll groove.
@@LetsPlayAll Update! Being a compulsive pedal-swapper, I tried the DOD250 and while I liked it, I found that the Xotic AC Booster worked wonders with the OCD, Traindrive, and Hotcake. Keeping the DOD as a Muff-booster. Atm, I have the DOD, Xotic, OCD, and Traindrive on the board as my boosters/drives. That board is getting crowded, what with my Fuzzes, Muff, mods & delays/reverbs. Probably should just grab an Xotic SL and run it with the Xotic AC. The Baxandall EQ on the AC is powerful. Have you done any more gear/"sound like" videos?? We do a couple PJ tunes in our band and am always on the lookout for useful resources.
Matt Gilbert nice! Xotic make great pedals, I think Mike has used an AC booster on his board. I’m planning on doing a Mike’s tone soon so stay tuned and for each lesson I run through the settings I’m using briefly 🤘
Thanks Jota! Well, the Archer into SL Drive also sounds excellent. But this video is old now and was limited to what i could get my hands on. Essentially anything that will do a Marshall in a box type will be perfect with some sort of Tubescreamer or Klon type in front of it. At the moment i'm using the Hamstead Odyssey and an Archer, and Friedman BEOD for Mike's stuff, so this is just an example of what can get you close to their sound :-)
Hank Jamison I do a lot of Stone vids as I already know the parts so catching up with Mikes. But of my last 4 tutorials, 2 were Mikes parts (Daughter and Ledbetter) and GTF on its way 🤘will have a better way for people to request stuff soon too so stay tuned
myech _ haha well thanks for the compliment mate but I’m new to UA-cam, channel is not quite a year old yet so I’m stoked with 6k and the responses from regular viewers 😊
MojoMojo is more similar to the Boss Blues driver. It’s not really a blatant Marshall in a Box pedal like the SL is. A fairer comparison would be between the SL drive and the TC Dark Matter pedal; which is TC’s Marshall in a box pedal.
Jon Lohrenz tbh I just grabbed a load of pedals from my neighbour rather than finding a similar Marshall in a box to the sl drive to compare. the idea was just to see how close sounding I could get other random pedals and the mojo and soul food were a surprise combo
daniel blauw yea they’ve played through loads of amps and switch guitar gear loads throughout the years, the idea here was just to give you an idea of what can get you close to the sound you hear on the album 🤘😀
Doesn't sound like Stone's tone on "Ten" at all. Too dark, too woolly, not enough power amp distortion (a generous dose of studio compression also helps). Stone likely used a Les Paul into a Marshall JCM800 2203 and maybe a TS9 or Rat (typical 80s metal rig as he and Jeff were huge metalheads), giving him a full sound but with plenty of top end crunch.
Stone is one of the grooviest players ever
Damn right..he and Mike are severely underrated.....LEGENDS...some of the best melodies and riffs in rock history

Been a while since i did this vid, would recommend the 1991 for Stone's tone on this album now :-) ua-cam.com/video/AeH6kQmNeOA/v-deo.html
i was more giving an opinion on the sd9 as its a really good pedal that people dismiss because it doesn't work at bedroom levels or use it with a 84 loadee combo. It wasn't a comment about his tone more that people dismiss that pedal frequently and it is fantastic at gig volumes. But yeah for pearl jam it wouldn't be my first choice. For the heavier end of grunge floating into sludge metal and stoner it works fantastically.
@@fiveways cool, I’ve not played one, will have to check it out if I get the chance! Thanks for the insights 😊🤘
Great video! Which one would you choose? 1991, ocd or sl?
Thanks! 1991 - it’s my go to drive pedal for most things tbh 🤘😊
Very good my friend!!!
You are helcome in Brazil!!!
thanks Marcos!
Let’s Play All - ANY DESIRE TO PART WITH THAT GUITAR???
haha i'll let you know :-)
All I'm hearing is: You need an SL Drive.
Question is if I can replicate anything close to it with my Marshall Code 25 modelling amp.
Bottom line if it sounds close to your ears with what you have then use that 😀🤘
Yo do you think you could do some mother love bone videos or even some green river videos
daniel blauw sure will ask the Patreons mate 🤘
@@LetsPlayAll thanks I think the mother love bone and green river stuff should by counted in stones body of work
@@LetsPlayAll honestly I think mother love bone would have been better then Pearl jam if Andy wood wouldn't have died
@@LetsPlayAll I liked Pearl jam better when stone wrote most of the music it was more riff driven
Would it be even better if I used the sl Drive + the tube screamer instead?
Putting the tube screamer before the SL drive would defo be the same effect. I think I have a tube screamer type but I’m planning on getting a jcm800 type pedal so I’ll have a video for this too soon!
Cheers. Can you tell us what order the pedals are in? SL->Tumnus or Tumnus->SL
Warren Millar Oo sure, must have edited that bit out haha. Always the least OD into the most OD so signal chain is Tumnus (or other Klon type) - OCD - SL Drive. So for that pairing Tumnus -> SL Drive
Great video - How do you get the effect from the beginning of the song black?
Thanks man, it’s not a guitar effect it’s a lofi type of effect they would have added afterwards. You could try to emulate it by taking all the bass out of your sound possibly?
I did and cover of black and pretty much what you have to do is go in post and remove everything except the midrange
Hello again! Great video, good to see what you're using in the band. I have an SL Drive too, and absolute beast of a pedal. I use my TS-9 to push it for my Ten Stone tone, sounds great. What are you setting your SL Drive to? It's difficult to tell with the perspex knobs!
Neill Tupman hey man, I think tone and drive both about 2pm. Yea I love the sl drive. How was your gig in the summer?! 🤘
@@LetsPlayAll Ah cool - will try those settings at next rehearsal. Yeah, the gig in August was epic thanks, pub was rammed and it went off better than we could be hoped! Got another one lined up in the same place at some point in 2019, plus we might enter the local Battle of the Bands (although we're all old enough to know better!). Got to catch you guys when you're next local, Brighton is nearest to me - have you anything booked there or nearby in 2019?
Neill Tupman awesome glad it went well! We’re all over in 2019, Southampton at 1865 with a foo fighters tribute supporting us in Feb and we’re back at The Haunt in Brighton September 2019. Check out facebook.com/pearljammband for tour dates. Gimme a shout if you’re coming along and come say hi🤘😉🤘
@@LetsPlayAll Excellent stuff Matt, will put the Haunt date in my diary - will definitely come say hello. In fact would be cool to see your rig up close; compare notes etc! Take care, have a HNY and hope to catch you in 2019 mate! Neill
Neill Tupman awesome hope to see you there mate, HNY to you and yours too 🤘
Hey Matt! I just received my Xotic XL today. Could you please tell me which setting you used on it for Stone’s 10 sound? There’s a toggle switch
Humbucker Superlead/Superbass.
Thanks so much
Matt Klein hey Matt! I haven’t changed any of the internal dip switches so mines on the out of the box setting which I’m guessing is super lead without looking at the instructions!
Let's Play All on that’s actually what I have mine set at too. Thanks again!
Thank you :)
Would you say, that the sl Drive should be my go to pedal, cause I have a Marshall box but an Egnater Rebel 30 amp...
Sounds class
The Archer into the OCD sounded amazing!!
dragonfistjedi so awesome! I’ve been using a tumnus for a while but am going to try the archer for a bit on my board! Plus the Archer really does the “dissident” style tone he uses on the Vs album too 🤘
What other pedals did Stone use from this era? Thanks!
Amer Djulbic this is supposed to be authentic www.pedalboardsofthestars.com/rigs-gear-by-artist/stone-gossard-pedalboard-pearl-jam/
So is it a univibe for what sounds like chorus on the Jeremy clean tone?
BS! This ain't how Stone sounds.
He's more of: "emmm..., ...like..., emmm, ...emmm..., ...like..., ...the band (nasal).., ..you know.., ..emmm.."
blejavac 😂 I edit out a lot of my Ummmms 😀
His tone was just a peavy backstage + reverb mic 🎤,to the mixer ,, ......."........ that’s it .
I think he was very shy hahah
@@LetsPlayAll thanks for the feedback. I will continue then exploring the TS and hope to find some PJ tones.
@@LetsPlayAllor maybe run the TS into the sl drive?
What were the amps used for TEN album?!
You are close on the tone. To get that exact Gossard tone, you definitely need to add a "3" sticker to the pickguard.
Haha thanks mate 😂
4:03 so that's how you play that riff! I've been playing it wrong for years!
Haha I’m always still suprised people still watch this vid 😀🤘Glad it was useful!
@@LetsPlayAll ☺️
@@McMorgan1312 I haven’t had a chance yet but yea I heard some chorus on the new album! Very cool. He’s used phaser and univibe a fair bit over the years. Flanger too? Haha awesome
Great work!!
Do you add a bit of Chorus to your Clean tone?
No mate, just cleanish amp and a bit of reverb
@@LetsPlayAll thanks. I had read something about Stone possibly using a Chorus pedal but was sure for this song or not. Your tone is great. Totally nailed it.
@@clfnole thanks man, check out the 1991 if you’re after an easy way to get the ten tone 🤘😀
I hear chorus on the Jeremy clean part. Is that a univibe?
I got a marshall jvm410 with a couple 1960 cabs, ibanez tube screamer and a les paul....done!
Dan Edgar haha nice!
Great 👏👏👏
Yago Ravell thanks Yago! 🤘
which sl drive mode did you use?
Just the one out of the box mate
Great video thanks
Great video and very informative but now i want like 6 new pedals lol
PALPHIE BOY haha thanks and also my apologies for the GAS 😀🤘
Matt Gilbert yea they’re just an awesome band! HNY mate 🤘
@@LetsPlayAll Cheers! Will keep an eye out for that. I'm the only guitarist so I kinda have to play a synthesis of the two (or three!) parts.
So, the absolulety winner is the Xotic SL Drive, and second place for OCD (?).
Thanks for the video! Sounds really nice.
Cheers from Chile. 🇨🇱🤘🏻
@@LetsPlayAll Thank you very much!!! The tube Screamer would you set on the first or las place of the chain?
Thanks!
@@JotaMcCready No probs, defo TS before the higher gain pedals, PJ would have originally had a TS in front of Marshall amps
@@LetsPlayAll Thanks Matt, for every kind answer, you a great guy!
Cheers from Chile! 🇨🇱🤘🏻
What's the combo you use
it's a Victory V40 head with a 1 x 12 Victory cab
I’d probably go with the OCD for this one
Wait till you see the new pedal board....the OCD has been kicked off by another one :-)
Let's Play All What is it? Now I wanna know!
@@Chandlerbingeling Haha stay tuned!
So like... all of your videos are about Stone, when are you going to post some Mike stuff?
Hank Jamison I do a lot of Stone vids as I already know the parts so catching up with Mikes. But of my last 4 tutorials, 2 were Mikes parts (Daughter and Ledbetter) and GTF on its way 🤘will have a better way for people to request stuff soon too so stay tuned
@@LetsPlayAll great!
Stone Gossard es la leyenda viviente de Seattle
OCD hp/l.p. switch is high pass/low pass not high power/ low power
Karl Longbottom cool thanks for the correction! Should read manuals more often 😀
No it’s not high pass or low pass. It’s high PEAK or low PEAK.
I stand corrected
Karl Longbottom me too (again) thanks Dan!
yes definitely high peak/low peak.
How do you only have 6k followers? I looked and expected you to have like 500k lol
myech _ haha well thanks for the compliment mate but I’m new to UA-cam, channel is not quite a year old yet so I’m stoked with 6k and the responses from regular viewers 😊
Thaaanks
Dan here... Mick? Mick?
Don't worry, i dress up as Mick in next weeks vid ;-)
well done, thanks. - though besides his 'sounds', IMO it's his compositions/Riffs that are most epic
agreed!
Daniel steinhardt!
Rick Sanchez haha wait...Rick is that you!!?
@@LetsPlayAll I'm one of many 😉
MojoMojo is more similar to the Boss Blues driver.
Dime store Daniel Steinhardt.
Some pictures show stone playing a Plexi
daniel blauw yea they’ve played through loads of amps and switch guitar gear loads throughout the years, the idea here was just to give you an idea of what can get you close to the sound you hear on the album 🤘😀
@@LetsPlayAll you did a great job thanks stone and Mike are some of my favorite player's
@@danielblauw2978 Ahh thanks Daniel :-)
Doesn't sound like Stone's tone on "Ten" at all. Too dark, too woolly, not enough power amp distortion (a generous dose of studio compression also helps). Stone likely used a Les Paul into a Marshall JCM800 2203 and maybe a TS9 or Rat (typical 80s metal rig as he and Jeff were huge metalheads), giving him a full sound but with plenty of top end crunch.
11:00 check this out
That sl drive is a beast I didn't know it was a marshall in a box I thought it was some kind of a clean boost
They have an EP booster which looks v similar but yea it’s a great little pedal!
Love your videos. Did you put a black vinyl overlay on the Edwards headstock? Looks and sounds great
JerkyTreat thanks man. I didn’t, the previous owner did that. Yea it’s perfect for PJ stuff 🤘😀
@@LetsPlayAll Awesome
woohoo i'm an edwards LP owner myself! absolutely no point in getting a gibson.
They're great guitars for sure! I wouldn't say no to a Gibson tbh haha but Edwards are amazing value for money!
