This band's records were played at the Barnes and Noble I worked at constantly around this time. That's the most notable thing about them.

Solid album. First heard about them when their songs “Obstacles” and “To All of You” were featured in the “Life Is Strange” game. Phenomenal game too!

I listened to the album before seeing your review. I had not heard of them either before I saw the video where you mentioned you would be reviewing it. I wrote down notes to what I thought of each song. I'll give a very brief summary.
City Talks: This reminds me of Roy Harper in its intent but the difference is Roy Harper made his songs sound interesting and this guy seems more like a stripped-down version of Roy Harper and Michael Chapman without knowing what makes their stuff stand out.
Obstacles: This sounds like Eddie Vedder wanted to collaborate with Fan Modine and they recorded this song and both decided it wasn’t good enough to make much of a dent so they threw it away and the Syd Matters guy rummaged through the trash can and found the song and released it himself.
To All Of You: Now we have a song I actually dig. At least it’s the best song so far. This is like Don McLean teaming up with David Ackles to do a lounge piece, which is an extremely odd idea but it works.
Icare: The first part of the song I did not care for at all but then it got good and I liked it so I liked half of the song but the half I liked I really liked.
Someday Sometimes: This sounds influenced by Ray Davies and it has a kind of deep cut of the Kinks vibe to it but perhaps as if the Kinks recorded it now and did modern arrangements to it. It’s a decent song and I enjoyed it.
Passe Murraile: The first half of the song I didn't like but I liked the second half a lot.
Watcher: This didn't do much for me.
Lost Bird: I didn't like the first part of the song at all but the second part I thought was really great.
Flow Backwards: I thought it was annoying.
English Way: It's okay but not great.
Middle Class Men" The worst song on the album. Yuck.
What Are You Looking At: The best song on the album and somewhat influenced by Pink Floyd's album Wish You Were Here.

I just saw The Chameleons last night & recommend them or ( and ) The Comsat Angels & The Sound , 3 of the best 👌 bands from the 80's that many missed & all with manageable catalogs. Thanks for considering my request.

Excellent bands... 3 of my all time favorites!!! I will not stop talking about them in my stuff until all 3 bands (and though they had some success...The Church) are rightly recognized! 😆

We’ve heard. It totally sucks. UA-cam is very bad about explaining why it demonetized his channel. We support him on Patreon. As should everyone.

I'll check it out. Love Remy Zero and stuff their guitarist Jeffrey Cain has done since, most recently joining The Church. Speaking of The Church, when are you guys going to do a Ranking The Church Albums video?

@TastesLikeMusic 😆 maybe do a 2 part , 1981-1999 and 2000-2024. Or, by decade and then tournament style of the top of each decade.

“Sleepy, pretty, just alright” vocal is adequate but doesn’t command my attention, keeps repeating its feel. Only when I hear “English way” with piano & “What you looking At” electric guitar do I get something more definite in style

Parts of this remind me of, or have very similar influences, You I Lov (2001) by Sub.bionic . Unfortunately, the band only recorded one proper album on Extasy Records and then a self produced with some new songs and songs from You I Lov after the International side of Extasy Records closed. Jimmy Paxson from the band has toured and recorded with a ton of artists. Jimmy Tucket the other main writer unfortunately passed away in 2014. It would be a great album for this type of video.

I actually just heard this for the first time about a month ago! definitely a solid album very Radiohead inspired. It’s from 2005 though not 2008.

Syd Matters' first album, "A Whisper and A Sigh" (2003) was a promising debut - a couple of excellent tunes and some enjoyable ones. I found their sophomore "Someday..." a bit bland, not up to my expectations. Still I bought the following two records, hoping to find again the magic of the debut, but I didn't.
I recommend you to check "Girls in Hawaii", a contemporary Belgian band whose output is both more enthralling and consistent.

At times, this is a chill album. Some very fine acoustic guitar playing, no percussion. Other times it gets a little intense, a little more energetic, and there's percussion. The vocals are pleasing, and there's some nice keys and subtle electronics. Some songs have a rather hypnotic quality. The diversity might lead some to say the album is disjointed, but I think it all works together pretty well. Overall, it's pretty easy going. Sometimes the songs evolve in interesting ways, and I appreciate the interludes between them. There's a good amount of different sounds and instrumentation to be heard here. Occasional electric guitar. The hidden track hurts the album a little. It starts off sounding like it's going to be one of those repetitive hidden tracks that don't go anywhere, droning on for too long. Thankfully, it turns into something else - the most rock-oriented track here, a little dreamy at the same time, reminiscent of Pink Floyd. The vocals at the end of the song get kinda trippy. I'm not crazy about the album, but it's really good. 3.75 stars (which unfortunately means it will have to be a 3.5 on RYM).

Yeah, I pretty well agree with you guys overall. I thought it was a really nice listen and there was a lot about it that I liked, although I'd say the songs I liked the best were in the first half, but I agree the hidden track was cool. But yeah, not top level for me enough to get any higher than a 3.5. But it was cool to hear since I had never heard of them either.

I saw where one patron recommended bands like The Chameleons, The Comsat Angels and The Sound, but none of them ended up making it; hopefully you guys will be able to get to one of them in an album review or ranking someday! Especially Joe, The Sound is probably your favorite “post-punk” band by a wiiiiiide margin! lol
