The morality and big city of cyberpunk, but the retro future aesthetic of steampunk
Yup
I’ve been worldbuiding an Urban Fantasy Deco/Dieselpunk, love seeing people talk about deco punk
Hey same, how is yours going?
Same I hope yours is doing well
What's it called
@@masonpowell4399 not sure if you directed that towards me but ours is called 'First Death'. What is yours called?
Please, all I ask is to include the era correct weapons without limiting it to revolvers.
this is honestly the best genre for me, I like retro sci-fi and noir so much
Same
There's just something about it isn't there, just as an example of something small in films that I love for some reason is an old-school taxi driving over a steam vent at night as a well dressed man in a fedora walks past into a casino or a business villain of some sort in a classy office room smoking a cigar overlooking the the city from his skyscraper
Nice vid, I think Decopunk more simplistic. Were as Cyberpunk is "high tech, low life". I think Decopunk as the side of Cyberpunk that typically doesn't show "high tech, high life". Just because someone maybe living high life tonight, doesn't yesterday was low life and tomorrow wouldn't be low life (which it most likely will be). Art Deco is typically an influence of most Cyberpunk.
Not a bad way to put it
I can’t help but feel like the existence of the Decopunk sub-genre/aesthetic implies the existence of other early 20th century art movement-inspired punk genres/aesthetics. Such as NouveauPunk, CubePunk, DadaPunk, FauvePunk, VortPunk, and StijPunk.
But idk if we’re ready for that conversation…
Your not wrong but the only one I’ve run into atm is solarpunk being Heavy with nouveau Art esthetic and atom/ray punk rocking googie art theirs probably others but they haven’t come up yet.
DadaPunk would be redundant tho, like PunkPunk or DadaDada
I mean, you could call Moebius' style NouveauPunk...but that would be selling it a bit short.
The best current decopunk is The Arcane Casebook series by Dan Willis
"If the Google Translator Voice Would Have Had It's Own UA-cam Channel - The Movie"
😑 YUP! Worst part of videos my voice. Im not particularly a talker but I can’t stand AI voices for longer than a minute and too broke to pay some to do it for me.
the 1st things that pop to my head regarding the concept of decopunk, is the original Bioshoock games and Doom Patrol
Big o and bio shock for me but I can see doom patrol
BioShock is a mix of Deco and Biopunk.
I’d say so but leaning a bit more to deco
@@NylasWUP Astetics, yes. But with The Adam and powers, Biopunk
Bioshock: Decopunk + Oceanpunk + Biopunk = Bio-alcoholpunk
(Alcoholpunk being a mix of Decopunk and Oceanpunk, with the common theme between them being a liquid from the 1920s, and Alcohol fits the bill thanks to the prohibition, thus the name)
Well, enzyme superpowers is no more biopunk than Shin Godzilla.
But the lore behind them is _quite,_ especially if you remember the moral part. Human experiments with reference to nazis? Living incubators? The way big daddies are made? Cynicism that allowed all that?
hold on... in the music section you failed to mention electroswing?!
Gonna be honest with you I 100% forgot electroswing was a thing.
@@NylasWUP damn thats heart shattering

The original Czech word is "robot" (pronounced with "o" as in the word "top"). Robota is an inclined version of the word.
Decopunk has to be my favorite punk genre and it’s great to see some more videos on it!
P.S. Glad I’m not the only one who liked Big O season 2. Definitely on my top 5 for favorite anime series.
Freaking looooove Decopunk.
Several of my friends do it real life, too.
What do you mean?
@@NylasWUP They dress the part daily and modified their personal possessions. Needless to say, they were the classiest people in our college.
They sound like it and good peeps
@@NylasWUP The best. ❤
This is also my favorite fictional subgenre. I'd recommend Larry Correia's HARD MAGIC series in addition to the Arcane Casebook for book series of this type. Dark City was excellent. Thanks for shouting it out.
Thanks for the recommendation I’ll look into them.
bioshock is more a deconstruction of decopunk than actual decopunk
How so? Because the city has gone to hell?
@@NylasWUP deconstruction is the act of taking a trope or genre and showing how horrifying or dissappointing it would be in real life. Bioshock goes what if a society was this corrupt and had access to all this tech, and answers that such a society wouldn't be able to last long especially if mad scientists couldn't be told no
May the Gray never rise to your door! :D
I thought making dieselpunk shinier and more colorful made it atompunk.
Both are pretty shiny.
@@NylasWUP
Should we get Jeanine Clement to sing about them then?
from what I can gather decopunk is dieselpunk meets noir
@@NylasWUP
Why does steampunk have to be shiny?
Wasn’t the technology of the Victorian era generally made out of cast iron?
@@jonathanthompson5900 lol i dont mean literal shiny its starts by how we got Cyberpunk to begin with authors and creators thought sci at the time was too shiny the tech not warn or well used everything pristine and clean and the world not realistic. So they grunge upo the tech it up gave the world a nihilistic lens (it was around the 80s afterall). Yes Steam is very bronze and cast iron but its not a grungy or grubby world and the stories and choices less grey in their morality and general more pleasant then cyberpunk which as the original i usually for better or worse. i put as the mirror in front of it the punk genre im going over.
Personally I think of Prey as BioShock in space but you do you.
Love the video man. I love decopunk (even if it’s only really because BioShock) and I love the videos you produce. I never know what I’m getting into when you post something, but it’s always something cool. Keep up the good work my dude.
Thanks man that means alot
I want a Tesla/Deco-Punk world. A fusion of both.
Like, if Teslapunk continued into the 1900’s.
Bertolucci's The Conformist?
Yeah, like, if you don't require the city in all its art-deco splendor, then...
Woman on the Moon, by the same Fritz Lang who created Metropolis, the last large movie before both the advent of sound and Black Tuesday.
Siberia by Benoit Sokal is not completely, but many the locations, including the train on which the protagonist travels, are pretty much so aesthetically. Also - wind-up -robots- automatons!
I agree. I love Decopunk.
This is the first one of your videos I have seen. It was really interesting. Thanks. Gonna have to watch a bunch of your other videos now.
Awesome, thank you!
very cool video, I love your channel, I am working on my story and love to learn about different genres
Thanks and you’ve certainly come the correct place 🙂
Word robot was invented by brothers Čapek and is inspired by robota. Robota is forced labour for local feudal lord.
Nice man!

Batman TAS came first
Yep but what I said is still true. Batman TAS - Big O - The New Batman/Superman Adventures (That’s when everyone got a redesign and Tim Drake took over as robin) that’s the version big os artist worked on but no one at least in my circle ever called it that. So for simplicity I say Batman TAS
@@NylasWUP thanks for the clarification. Enjoying all the punk vids by the way
Np and thanks man
If I had the money I would pay you to do every punk genre (even proposed genres that may or may not exist
like neuropunk or kidpunk.)
Neropunk or mindpunk is definitely trying to be a thing. I’d honestly be terrified of research something called kidpunk. And thank you that’s nice to hear and very much appreciated
Don't worry, kidpunk is basically a genre of kids being smarter and more capable without adult supervision. From, the tropedia wiki.)
So, 2x4 technology punk.
@@deredere2096so knd?
@@mr_indie_fan Yea
Would you consider the Caretaker’s music as decopunk like music?
Emergency Test The Caretakers? Na but that’s the only album of theirs I’ve heard.
@@NylasWUP
I feel like Everywhere at the End of Time fits the decopunk esthetic, since it has a 1900s-1930s tone and a memory theme that makes the listeners feel like they haves dementia.
@@jonathanthompson5900late comment, but the aesthetic for EATEOT is actually Hauntology
Wait, BioShock isn't BioPunk :?
It is a little bit, But The setting and themes push it into Decopunk at least in my opinion.
This is like THE jackpot for deco punk research, thanks so much for this!
Could I ask, in 14:31 - where is that a shot from? Right before Jessica Rabbit?
Stock footage by cotton bro. He makes amazing stock footage that in most of my videos.
And thanks
