I really like Raygun Rothic and Atom Punk creativity. To me, they represent an alternative, optimistic, future where ingenuity, science and hope reign instead of despair and stagnation. There are cities, but they are clean and nearing utopian. There exist single family homes, they are high quality and comfortable. The focus is placed on understanding and exploration, rather than struggle; there is no limit to what people can accomplish if willpower is applied, instead of insurmountable despair.
Personally, I would prefer a space opera future to any dystopia, as cyberpunk is more of a warning than an destination, a used future; don't get me wrong, cyberpunk is a great rpg setting, but not a place to live in.
I can respect that and as he I’ve done these videos Im up for any future that lets me chrome out my meat suit. Even if it mean I gota wear a silver jumpsuit to get it. 😁
Are we less creative? I dunno but I'm fascinated with the reasons it appears that way (check out Tyler Cowen's work on what he calls the great stagnation, as well as Mark Fisher's talk "the slow cancelation of the future"). I actually have a theory derived from Cowen's work that we are in fact living in 1 of 2 possible retrofuturistic timelines that branched out after the the end of WW2 (like in Fallout). We live in the cyberpunk timeline but had we gone down a different path in our technology evolution tree and ended up in an atompunk timeline.
The idea is that we peaked after the space race and haven't made any significant technological leaps as a species since (disregarding the internet, but we'll get back to that). The over the top future visions of the scale of industry that had been foreseen in days long since past were actually quite reasonable given the context of the times they were living in, having gone from the first manned flight to the Moon landing in roughly half a century. With that rate of progress an atompunk future was surely to be expected, so how'd we end up with a cyberpunk future instead?
I believe we've long since maxed out the industrial progress possible with fossil fuel, which is why we've been stuck in the mid 70's on repeat, everything still looking like the late 20th century but with more screens. Macroengineering has ground to a halt (same civilian planes since the 60's), even regressed in some areas (look at the retiring of the supersonic Concord jet), the only areas of macroengineering technology we've still made progress in is actually in fact to due with the one area of technology that has not only been progressing but doing so exponentially, that being microelectronics (mostly driven by computer science & communications technology). But outside of microengineering nothing significant is happening, unless of course it's due to the advances in microengineering (almost everything we've learned about the brain has been since the 90's). So the industrial revolution has long since peaked and has given way to the information revolution (where we got an iPhone instead of a flying car). Which I believe is still in it's infancy (all though not for long given it's exponential progress) before it gives way to the cognitive revolution (the singularity). So that's our cyberpunk retrofuture timeline (retrofuture not in the classic sense of the word, but that we are living in a futuristic retro world rather than a retro vision of the future), but yea, pocket super computers and crumbling outdated infrastructure (high tech, low life).
As for the atompunk timeline, had we for example continued the development of molten salt reactors despite the inability to derive weapons from them (what little funding was given to the project actually accomplished a lot given their budget, but it was shut down in 1969), or if they had even started research earlier, with the aesthetics and engineering of the time now with virtually unlimited energy constraints, I'd imagine we'd see some sort of classic retrofuturistic world much like that of Fallout, but more likely in the long run it'd look like cassette futurism / formicapunk like the aesthetic from the Alien franchise. Spoiled buy almost limitless near free energy, quantity begins to take on a quality all it's own. Engineering begins to rely on brute force rather than efficiency with the price manufacturing now negligible, why do more with less when by the time you've figured out how to do so the competition has easily found out how to do more with more and has done so twice over. We'd have computers, but progress on microengineering would be as slow in there world as macroengineering is in ours, as the competitive incentives at play would favour simply building bigger computers rather than more efficient ones. I imagine their version of the internet would be highly centralized as it would basically end up being a scaled up version teletext/videotex services like Ceefax, Telidon or Viewtron). So more high life, low tech? But you get the idea, retro technology but scaled up.

@@steamtasticvagabond474 I like the idea the name as it fits why of the aesthetic, but it doesn't describe the aesthetic itself, which would best be defined as cassette futurism (or atompunk if they kept the deco derived streamline modern aesthetics of the 50's). Also note that not all cassette futurism is necessarily formicapunk, but all formicapunk is cassette futurism. Formicapunk really needs to look like scaled up 70's & 80's technology from *our* world, not how sci-fi of that era imagined a future fictional could look like, but rather how they'd imagine it would look like. The Alien series for example, was straight formicapunk, besides the H.R. Giger biopunk body horror aesthetics of the xenomorphs, all the technology had the same aethetics as the era they were made in just scaled up. Contrast this to Blade Runner, and while it classifies as cassette futurism, there's no formica, we never lived in a world that looked that looked as stylized regardless of how technologically advanced we were at the time. But with the Alien series, all the technology / aesthetics seemed to be a pretty conservative and linear extrapolation of what the future would look like based on what they had around them in the present.
Beyond being incredibly insightful I find this kinda funny as I sit here in my high tech low life shirt. I would not of thought of it in the terms of actual development. Than aesthetic choice. I do agree that the industrial revolution has topped out with the current energy sources we have at our disposal. It all comes back to power dosent it? It is one of the enjoyable aspects of this journey the what if? I wish our cyberpunk future looked like night city but I’ll take what I can get.
More resources fancier looking tech even with understanding the frame work of why go smaller when you don’t have too i feel my modern mind attempt to reject it.

@@NylasWUP Hey sorry for the late reply, I no longer get notified since I got my first community guidelines strike (had this channel since '07 I had a private playlist of videos I'd later share on r/videos that had a video that apparently featured child endangerment, couldn't imagine what that'd be, I remember sharing a vid of this little Slavic girl who was showing off her boxing skills beating on a soft rotting tree, that's the only thing I can think of).
But yea that's why my favourite punk subgenre is nowpunk (I highly recommend Neon Dystopia's article on the subject), because it's all about seeing the sci-fi in the real world so it allows me to larp just by living in the present. In fact this was the direction the oldschool cyberpunk authors started going in (Bruce Bethke himself coined the term nowpunk), the idea being that cyberpunk is now. The most well known nowpunk media would have to be the Mr. Robot TV series, but my personal favourite would have to be Die Hard 4 because of how perfectly encapsulates the core idea of nowpunk in that it was an unintentional sci-fi movie (and might as well have been sci-fi if somebody from the 80's watched it).
Also check out the tactical shooter (a videogame genre of realistic FPS' based of of military training sims) Marauder (a game based off the most popular tactical shooter Escape from Tarkov, which is incidentally my favourite example of a nowpunk videogame), as it perfectly visualizes the kind of atompunk realism aesthetic I was talking about. But yea Escape from Tarkov, there's a short fan-made fictional documentary about the game that'll give you real nowpunk (cyberpunk is now) type vibes. Another interesting thing about Escape from Tarkov apart from being nowpunk (unintentionally sci-fi), is apart from being intended to be a survival game, that it's also unintentionally turned it into a horror game because of the game's realism. I have a nowpunk playlist on my channel, (pretty long and messy, but some day in the distant future I intend to organize it), it even includes stuff about the industrial revolution and beyond (The Meiji Revolution was nowpunk AF), I'm just fascinated by technology and science in and of itself as an almost sort of cosmic force in the way that it shapes Human culture society.

I may be one engineer, but I will try to do everything can to shift our course to a better future, we don't need to live in hell. LENR energy (check out Brillouin Energy and E-CAT) is a great first step, along with stronger laws against global monopolies. Also, the TR3B may be real, no one knows.
There still exists a few optimistic engineers, inventors and scientists, driven by love of a brighter future.
Ah yes, I tried writing Raypunk before, it was set on an ice planet where humans had to make... shall we say, "environmental force field" to survive. The native species while much more primitive were larger, had more arms and blended in to snowstorms so the only people who go out on the frontlines pretty much would have been death row inmates who got forced into being enlisted. It definitely wasn't bright and happy. Perhaps adventurous because they are on an entirely different planet. Otherwise I guess my Story didn't fit the Raypunk genre.

I have an idea for a new retropunk genre.
As you might have noticed In retropunk(punk genres involving retrofuturism) is that they all revolve around a timeline where the next big technology didn’t come until later in the timeline and the current tech pushed more of its limits. Example; electricity doesn’t become major until later on than the original timeline. Consequently, steam becomes more advanced and powerful. Consanguinity, you now have Steampunk.
What about an alternate version of our own time, where the internet didn’t become available until 2030-2050 with the U.S. military not declassifying it in the 1990s. It’s kind of like a contemporary cyberpunk.
In this alternate world, storage like flash drives and CDs would be even more used and popular. More focus would be put on hardware, making a computer more futuristic in design and making it run faster. Less attention would be paid to making a computer work with the internet.
Hardware like printers and such would be more popular. People would likely imbrues less common hardware as well, like laser keyboards.
Without widespread adult content, traditional values would be more popular, but people wouldn’t speak as openly without the internet, and a tyrannical power might rise up and take control easier.
Computers would talk, cars would be smart, robots would exists with better processing and hardware, but they wouldn’t communicate like in our timeline.

Sounds like a mix of formicapunk and nowpunk. I like the idea of the internet being underground or criminalized kinda like The old fanzines. If your cool/skilled enough you know had to access it.

@@jlewwis1995 nowpunk isn’t really that absurd a concept, I haven’t put a lot of research into it but what I take from it at this point is it’s cyberpunk but as it would develop now instead of the 80s and more “realistic” tech. Unfortunately that’s also why it’s so far down on the list. The live fast die never of cyberpunk is what I love most and that could only come screaming out of the 80s.

I absolutely love steampunk, and have a story that takes place in one. Though as I was thinking about it, the world already has ray guns as a brand new technology, and slowly becomes a little more raygun gothic by the very end. Ray guns started as a development to take down airships, so "armored" airships start popping up. The world has a never ending storm, by the end of the story the possibility that these armored airships could potentially get past the storm becomes more plausible, and... they start looking a little bit more like classic raygun gothic rocket ships. I like the idea of showing that slow change in perspectives and technology while it still being a steampunk world, just showing hints to what the future may hold...!
Honestly speaking, these represent alot of the same thing and can be used very interchangably. You can look at a handfull of art from both simultaniously and youd either be pressed to find the difference or can create a story board telling a tale of either a dystopian downfall or a space tech utopian breakthrough. You can also just easily fit both in a way similar to the original MS Gundam series where your (likely upperclass/rich) utopian spacenoids went to colonise the stars after ruining their own planet, leaving the earth humans to pick up the pieces after atomic war.

I know the colony Zeon started off in was better but that was an outlier. Or you’re thinking of G-Gundam because that was 100% G-Gundam. Well off people don’t start a revolution is all I’m saying. But whatever that’s true it why I grouped them together but it’s not all about the art or dystopian future vs utopian future it’s about what each genre is trying to say. In atompunk it’s well just 60s sci-fi in general. no not every problems can be solved with the atom and square jawed American in fact atomic power might bite us in the ass. All overall the same ethos as cyberpunk in different form. No the future isn’t suddenly going to be utopian it’s going to be now just different or a lot worse. tech changes, humanity dosent.
@@NylasWUP as far as gundam goes, the colonies have always been richer thats just a staple in the series as a whole, takes alot of money to go into space which is the general thing in alot of scifi which makes sense. I wasnt trying to throw any shade at your examples rather just adding to what you had to say
Both atom and ray represent alot of pre 80s scifi in art and conception but i can agree with you definetly that the encompacing theme is that humanity no matter how sophisticated are always primal deep down.
hey there bud, in comics there is a Hero in the Hight of 1948 called Captain Atom, who was the inspiration for Doctor Manhattan from the Watchmen. Captain Atom where inspired by Age Of Atom 1948- 1960, I would recommend if you got the time to read the comics about him, they really going places with him.

Jenny Agutter circa Logan's Run is my pic for a Sci-Fi Goddess. As far as imagination goes....we will never run out of that. The imaginative creations of sci-fi have become some of our current technologies or at least inspired by them. There will always be something new to discover or create as long as we can still think for ourselves.

Could you help me out on this? What's the difference in transistorpunk and formicapunk in terms of technology? They're kinda close in the timeline. Is transistorpunk (pardon my pun) a transition to atompunk to formicapunk?
Tech wise their pretty similar to the same (I haven’t done heavy research into ether yet) it’s more about focus transistorpunk is all about the Cold War or a similar war that can be used as alagory for the Cold War. Gun to my head Tech wise the only big difference Transistor punk leans a bit to The retro future tech of atompunk but it has the Internet but the pre alpha version were it’s just a network of military/gov computers
If you're reading this in 2022, @Nowhereproductions what are your thoughts on spacepunk and rocketpunk? Are they one and the same or different to you? No judgement either way.
Never heard of ether till this comment but (from my brief research) spacepunk is mostly about living on the frontier of space without going fully into a Desertpunk aesthetic: cowboy bebop, space sweaper, outlaw star. While rocketpunk looks like an offshoot of Raypunk focused on spaceship or spaceship life with retro future tech

Me and my friend have been wanting to write a Mostly Desert with some Mediterranean influnces based world on mars. The best way I know how to put it would be an ancient future in which you take the cultures of the ancient world(babylon, egypt, morocco, phonecia, kush, arabia) along with some cultures from the era of cowboys and Pueblo indians, all of them using the desert to replace the unknowing space in raypunk but with a realism thats more akin to atompunk regarding the responsibility of handling nuclear energy.
My trouble is a lack of a clear aesthetic because I also want to incorporate a bit of solarpunk into the world given most of the cities are based around ports but I also want to mantain the allure of arabian/egyptian cultures and use that as the dominant source of inspiration.
All in all, how would I use the ancient world cultures, mostly those situated near the desert and the ocean, and combine them with tech based aesthetics like atompunk or raypunk or solar punk without putting to many cooks in the kitchen so to speak?
If you need an idea as to the type of world its going to be, A good elevator pitch I would use to describe the world would be "An arab merchant, a cowboy mercenary, and a greek scholar walk into a bar"
Sorry took so long to respond life’s been. Let’s just say crazy. Full disclosure the ancient world isn’t my strong suit but I’ll help where I can. First feel free to ignore me but I would go solar punk with this you can use solar panels and what not but the growth and curve green of solar punk dosent mesh with the red planet. Least with me. As for RayPunk you don’t really need a lot to mesh Greek or Arabic aesthetic with the tech as much for the Greeks we still use a lot of theirs techniques. You just need to make it work for the people in your world. If they or their ancestors were colonist I’d go with mismashed material like their space ships were used to cobble together their first buildings. If not gleaming white polycarbonate that looks almost like marble but with criss crossing stains of red sand.
Might be the blade runner in me but I’ve always liked the idea a imposing black pyramid like the Luxor with a city grown around it. So look at modern building that have take The aesthetic of ancient civilization then push it further.

Hottake : I prefer the name nukepunk. Sure, atompunk does paint a clearer picture of the decade but doesn't carry the heavy connotations that nuke has. I at least wish it was it's own thing.

Okay, so you know raypunk. Well let me tell ya, she's got a British cousin and she's called Megalithic astropunk. Why is she called that? Because like the megalithic would suggest stones and stone circles, she more about mystery and a bit of horror. She's inspired by British 70s sci-fi. What does it rebel against? She rebels the idea of mild mattered television and giving the people more esoteric adventures.
It originates with the quartermass experiment. Other shows include but not limited to Children of the Stones, sapphire and steel, the tomorrow people, and most famous, Dr. Who.
