  • Spent the last couple weeks of 2022 playing the World of Warcraft: Dragonflight expansion - so here's my review. Is this a good time to jump in if you've never played WoW before? Is WoW worth playing at all in 2023? I'd say so!
P.S. lmao I forgot to talk about Dracthyr which I guess exist and are cool I guess but not really my thing

    01:15 - The Main Story

I'm also a very casual WoW player. I love how I don't feel pressured to do "chores" to be able to progress. I can just login and do whatever I want. I really don't remember the last time I cared this much about the world in World of Warcraft. So far it has been a 9/10 experience for me and I hope Blizz can keep the momentum.

Great video. I’m considering coming back to WoW and it was really helpfull overview from the casual player standpoint. You did a good job describing new systems, upgrades and parts of the expansion, that you like the most. I’m glad that they choose the direction of smaller scale storyline and quests, which makes them more engaging and gives it this cosy atmosphere that you’ve mentioned.

Blizz got the late game right this time. Now they need to fix new player experience. Players are thrown straight into BfA…and leveling BfA dungeons are just brutal. I wouldn’t be surprised if the game would be losing new players just based on that.

After skipping last xpac because of time commitments, this expansion really feels like a breath of fresh air, I really have had the most amazing levelling experience, where the story was fairy engaging and the side quests were just superb in their own way. I loved how it felt like gear upgrades didn't require you to raid, but they have really been spread out across world quests, weeklies, weekly events, mythic +, pvp, professions etc. It feels as if you can really choose how you want to play for once. I also just enjoyed the renown system a lot more, feels more rewarding the old rep grind, with the account wide unlocks and cool little features that I have enjoyed like rock climbing and spear fishing. All in all, most fun I have had in WoW in years, and really friendly to a casual player like me for weekend play. 9.5/10 (Not 10 because the main story was just a tiny bit generic)

You sum things up very well in your video.
I myself have been playing WoW for 18 years and have developed a certain love-hate relationship with the game over the years because I've seen way too much crap in the various addons, but Dragonflight is just wonderful and for me the best addon since Lich King 15 years ago, if not the best addon WoW has ever had.
One more note about the main story. You say yourself that you don't know the lore of WoW, so you probably can't begin to figure out the relevance of things, but that's perfectly fine. In any case, the main story is not over when you have quested through the zones, because the story continues when you have collected enough reputation in the individual factions and that leads to the fact that one continues to deal with the world events.
On the subject of alt friendliness, everything you unlock with your main char in Dragonflight is automatically unlocked on all your alts, so you basically only have to do everything once and you can skip everything on your alts if you want, but it's fun so you do it anyway.

Tyyyy SO much for this video.
    - I'm a Guild Wars 2 veteran (since launch and even as far back as playing GW1), and got into FFXIV about 7 months ago now. Adore both these games
    - Don't give a single shit about mechanics or min-maxing or whatever
    - Only care about story, aesthetic/appearance, and RP (just with my own character in the world, like having a headcanon. Not group RP).
    - Loved ARR in FFXIV and I do EVERY sidequest. Apparently, ARR is infamously considered 'slow' and/or 'mostly boring' or at the very best 'not the good stuff', but I adored it. And I don't care if I should 'only do the blue and main quests' and it's 'inefficient' to do every sidequest, I like to because that's fun for me. Plus clicking every npc for their tiny extra dialogue that no one ever sees but effort is put into anyways. AKA I include this point as I seem to be easily entertained/pleased.
    - I last played WoW over 10 years ago (played since it's inception before that). Don't really remember why I quit. I can't re-access that account (used to be shared with my sibling and I, it became all her basically after I lost interest). TLDR, I'd have to start completely anew.
Dragonflight has gotten me interested in playing again, just for the character creator alone. I'd also love to revisit some starting zones like the Worgen, Demonhunters, Pandarians, and Goblins, even if I didn't level any such characters further beyond their initial leveling zones. But I just... COULDN'T for the LIFE of me tell if the cost would be worth it, especially as a GW2 veteran who LOATHES sub fees (yet ffxiv cracked me on that one obviously). Soooo many opinions about WoW are negative in one form or another, and often deeply so. Many are also into gearing and raiding and mechanics and whatever. Lots of their criticisms are about things/systems/aspects in WoW I could care less about.
aka I'm super grateful for this vid. I think I will get it, even if I don't play for long. I'm the type of player who enjoys finding a nice tree or cliff in game and just sitting enjoying the view and music.

I’d say give it a go. They’re corrected a lot of the issues from those two expansions in particular. To the point that in my opinion DF feels like an entirely different game compared to the majority of SL as far as the environments and systems surrounding the player are concerned.
This is coming from someone in a similar boat to you. I loved vanilla through cata/beginning of MoP, then took a break through the end of mop until the mid point of BFA. I actively disliked BFA and SL lost me far before 9.1 ever came out.
DF has been a great experience so far and continues to be a few months in. Content cadence will be on par or better than legion if everything goes according to plan. 10.0.7 coming soon introducing a good chunk of content before the bigger 10.1.
Anyway blizzard seems to be sticking to their guns with the promises they’ve made and DF so far is showing that they’re keen on seeing them through which is honestly the biggest change of all. DF and the ass end of SL were made with large amounts of community feedback along with clear and mostly rapid communication in general and that continues to be their strategy.
They could also botch it and kill the game tomorrow but it seems that they’re taking their promise to reinvest into WoW and it’s core evergreen systems seriously so who knows.
Not particularly trying to defend blizzard, just that they’re actually trying matters to me, and it indeed seems like they are if that happens to matter to you as well.
I know your comment is a month old but hope that helps

Yea ok for casuals but you didnt mention you need to do EVERY side quest to unlock the main story(Rep). All the keystone M+/Heroic raid+ gear out ranks the crafted stuff so if your not a high end raider your stuck with low lvl gear rating unless you want to spend days and 10s of thousands of gold to max rank anything. EVERYONE plays the FoM classes only. PvP is total trash. Have fun waiting 30-40 min ques for the "NEW" solo shuffle if your dps spec. The horde totally suck in pvp. Every BG is a death match ppl only go for kills when it does nothing for the objectives but lose every time. So play ali if you want to do objectives in pvp. Plain arenas is all the FoM classes/groups(Look at the leaderboards)
Not trying rain on anyone parade but if your not that serious of a player then dont waste your time. 1st month maybe 2 you will have fun after that just a back burner game. And Fyi Ive been playing off and on since day one and play 2 characters not 10 alts like some ppl do. So I have some background with the game. And good luck finding ppl that can do keystone15+ cause after 15 it gets nuts.

I think the wow dev team should respect our time more, switching from group loot to personal loot in LFR and allow Pugs to choose personal loot instead of group loot. Heck, they could just copy the FFXIV loot system (tokens instead of loot) and it'll feel much better. 3 weeks of normal+heroic+lfr and 0 set pieces don't feel good and no one should experience this

    @onyonrong9244 Рік тому

Keep in mind, Chromie time is NOT available to fresh new players. After Exile's Reach you're dumped into a capital city with no direction, quests to go into dungeons you can't queue for, and flyers that don't actually explain what they're for. No MSQ here either to explain what the hell is going on. LFR is a mixed bag from mine and others' experiences as well, and does more harm than good for new players since the experiences can be so awful that it'll just turn them off completely. The low raiding population in retail compared to classic should be noted here. The game also doesn't explain what guilds are, how to join them, WHY they're so good, etc. They needed/need to streamline getting into normal raiding with a composed group instead of raiding with COMPLETELY randoms players. The servers also don't display any sort of faction balance or an accurate population or which servers they're connected to. Faction population for your server matters a LOT for the auction house, for example, even if there is a lot of cross-realm instance content you can do. I rolled on a fresh account, picked a random realm, came into Stormwind and there was ONE guy there who called me an idiot for going on the server. Apparently that server and its connected realms are just dead on that faction's side, though this was an issue that I thought sharding was SUPPOSED to fix but the world was just completely dead.

I want to love guild wars but its "progression" system being how it is makes it so hard to care. I remember playing for 500 hours and i had the same gear. The best part was the group world content, not the dungeons or raids. I hated all of that, every bit of it but the open world was the only fun part. But even there, i put that many hours in and i dont remember any actual meaningful upgrades. I got 100000 currencies and zero satisfaction for any of it.
WOW sucks today, hardbody but atleast upgrades and loot feels like loot and upgrades.

  • @jonathanwilliams3713
    @jonathanwilliams3713 Рік тому +5

I'm glad there's optimism from the fans of this game, but I burned out pretty quickly on the expansion. Once you kind of do all the open world stuff (which gameplay is still pretty mid, despite the exploration vibe being very good), it's still the same formula of monotony. Log in, do raid, log out, log back in next day, do a few keys for sparce loot, get bored, log off, wait for the next week. I don't see them deviating much from the boring seasonal plan that drives this style of gameplay since it's been what they've been doing for basically the last 6 years.
There's really no community in this game, nothing to get people to collaborate outside of the prescribed raid times for your guild, which I'll be honest, is misery. It's impossible to find a group of 20 people who you all like anyways. Much prefer the smaller content sizes of other MMOs. The crafting system doesn't bring as much to the community as I thought it would. I'm sure it helped Blizzard sell more WoW Tokens, though.

Previous expansions focussed too much on the plot. The player was taken from cut-scene to cut-scene. It was a total soap opera and the world was a setting frozen in time to suit those particular events. Dragonflight puts the plot aside and lets the world 'breathe' again. The player is an insignificant worm in a vast world again, exactly how an MMO should be.

I’ve actually enjoyed dragonflight. I leveled a toon to cap and had no interest doing anything further during shadowlands. Though I think the evoker class is pretty lame, I think the content of the expansion is strong so far. Now I will never put anything past blizzard to mess things up but so far on the right track. The only thing missing imo is difficulty. The dungeons are easy even under mythic+, raid is simple, and the tier gear looks super lame across the board. I remember grinding for the awesome tier loot but now couldn’t care less other than stats. Whoever did the design should be ashamed. Just a bunch of rock looking toons. LFR also needs to be tweaked because it just encourages people to join, die once, leave with no consequence. These people will never understand the struggle of getting a 25 man together and those who did join, were typically committed because the wait could be infinite

a lot of good in the game, i just dont trust blizz will be able to keep this going, but its a good first step.
and the one thing that keeps me from actually playing the game more is the community. its just as toxic as ever, its just generally not friendly and absolutely not welcoming to new or returning players.
for fun i thought id see how the players behaved in 50 dungeon runs over 7 days, 27 times when i suggested we change tactics after wiping a couple of times i got told in various ways to die. xD
in the end i had 6 runs out of the 50 that were fun and friendly all the way through and actually enjoyable.
the wow community has this deeply ingrained mentality that other players are there to waste your time and are a barricade that blocks your progress that you need to surpass. and seeing as blizz doesnt do much if anything with reports... yea this isnt likely to change, ever. the community cannot fix itself, blizz are the ones that need to step up to promote non-toxic behaviour and actually punish toxic people. but they seem unwilling or incapable of doing that.

That is a endgame game play issue as a lot of dungeons are timed in m+ which basically turns the dungeons/raids into time trials.. It forces tanks to be quiet and push the group forward as fast as possible.. I love Mythics but I hate being timed as it kills the vibe. This has created a good bit of toxicity cause one bad player brings the whole thing to a halt and yes it then turns into a "I have to be good enough to carry this scrub" mentality cause if not then no one gets ANYTHING and it just becomes hours wasted for nothing.. NOW IF they removed the timed runs it would chill the playerbase out a lot more in dg/raid pushes like it used to be.

its just one example of how blizz made the game in such a way that it makes a lot of people in it toxic, and unlike ffxiv there is no consequences to being toxic, cause blizz uses an automatic report system that doesnt do much if anything, and the ffxiv team has real gms.
