4:03:05 Kazuki Takahashi was sick and took pain medics when he drew the memory world arc. Also he had to draw under a deadline. Thats also the reason that this Arc (even in the manga, which is written better) has many unanswered questions. Later the manga was made new (bunkoban edition) and some things were added and some drawings were corrected from Kazuki Takahashi (including Zorcs design).
I think the reason the Orichalcos arc was so well-received was because it was pretty ambitious for a filler arc. Instead of just introducing a bunch of irrelevant villains for the heroes to knock down one by one, they actually had the balls to do some development with the main cast. Showing the dark side of (Yami) Yugi, making Mai into a villain for a bit, etc. There was actually some depth there. They showed us some new sides of the main cast we'd never seen before.
What always threw me off about the arc was the change in voice actor for Mai. Her original actress was so iconic (Megan Hollingshead). It’s one of those things that happen but always sucked Megan left the role.
This video is definitely going under the white noise playlist. Working out, grinding games, or at work itself, this'll be part of my rotation Amazing work overall! Its surreal that you can condense 5 main seasons and as many years of an anime into an entertaining few hours. I played the Gameboy Advance series of games before I even knew that the anime existed and have been recently rewatching it. I thought the story ended after Battle City lol. My first experience of knowing that the series continued was a random episode of 5D where one of the Duelist's crash their motorcycle. Keep up the great work!
Putting this on in the background while I work, and only a couple minutes in I wanna share a fun fact! Jonouchi's name in the 4-Kids dub being Joey is actually something the manga did! When Bandit Keith first met Jonouchi, he didn't want to bother saying his name right, so he shortened it to "Joey" and kept calling him that.
Watching/listening to this while working out. What a great trip down memory lane, read all the manga as a kid. Great video, would enjoy more like these, keep up the good work
1:58:58 had me in tears. I'm surprised that was the first accidental innuendo, given how much talk there is in Battle City about giving people the rod. 😭
3:41:28 btw that is a reference to the manga. Because those are the 'Battle Boxes' they use in the manga during Duelist Kingdom instead of the big Duel Arenas they use in the anime.
Personal head canon: kaiba was only seen at school once (flashback not included) because he was only there because he heard rumours of another blue eyes in the area. He was running kaibacorp already at that point so it could be true. After destroying it, he had no reason to hang around
Fun facts here while I watch this video: - Funny enough, in the manga they combine the DDM and burning building scene into one, that's where we were introduce to Duke's dad and his entire story. Its very different compare to what happened in the anime - In Forbidden Memories there's a character call Isis who, bares a striking resemblance to Ishizu only, she looks way more smarky and pissed than the calm and collective Ishizu in the anime. I wonder if when Forbidden Memories was in development Takahashi gave the team sketches of Ishizu but didn't had the full story for her yet. - Arkana's punishment was so much worse in the manga, after his duel Marik went into his memories and basically erase everything minus the time his mom died, and his wife left him, so that when he wakes up he'll become depress enough to take his own life. The original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga really is pretty dark my goodness - Another difference between anime and manga is the hourglass Mai is in, instead of it being sand, int he manga its flesh eating scorpions which, is really uncomfortable when you think about it. Marik also tells Joey in the manga that now he basically has a day to save Mai or else she would die, which puts a timer on him and everyone else. Makes you happy that the Virtual World arc didn't happened in the manga huh - How did 4Kidz censor Alister's brother's death in the dub? By how they always censor anyone who dies in this series, just say that they been "kidnapped"
Kinda wild i loved the virtual world arc when i was a kid and had no clue what filler was, looking back at it through this video it was complete ass aside from like 2 duels lol. Its such a weird break from the pretty tense Battle City stuff that happened before. Great video!
I guess my argument defending them trying to get the Puzzle off of the dueling arena in the burning building without using the carabiner is that maybe it was too hot from the fires to touch with their hands
Low expectations based on the title but this video is actually top tier. I wanted to rewatch yu-gi-oh but I didn't have time to grind it out. It's a perfect amount of context for each episode plus my memory so I feel like I watched it. Now I can start from where I left off 20 years ago. Thank you yugitoad!!!
The was really well done…I can’t binge watch yu-gi-oh even though I love it so much…I get gassed from the repetition but I’m really happy you gave us the run down…I know it’ll be taxing but you should do a recap of each yu-gi-oh series. Gx, 5D’s, Zexal, Arc-V, VRains, Sevens & Rush!!!!!
3:01:15 in fairness, pegasus is rich and no one can really prove he stole people's souls (well kaiba could prove he kidnapped mokuba at least) and in battle city people were either getting held hostage over duels, or isolated on a blimp/tiny island in the middle of nowhere. so cops werent ideal or flat out werent options at the time. they probably coulda sued kaiba for not cancelling the tournament and bringing everyone home (and for blowing up the island without evacuating everyone for that matter) but i get the impression he'd just buy his way out of that. really the orichalcos arc might be the first time where calling the police is a viable option lol. the writers probably could have gotten away with that STILL not working, if they just established that the police were all busy dealing with the whole "duel monsters becoming real and wreaking havoc on humanity" situation lmao. but it sounds like they didn't
Holy crap, I've watched the beginning of yugioh a few times but somehow I never came across that detail that Joey actually participated in and made it to the quarter finals of the same tournament that Weevil and Rex were dueling in. Probably because I kept watching the dub. The dub makes it seem like Joey still hasn't gone out and dueled anyone outside of Granpa their friend group and the finals between Rex and Weevil was a totally unconnected duel.
The DDM game on the gba was great. The Zorc arc was wild, i wanna see if it was clearer in the manga at some point because there's something great trying to claw it's way out of that mess. Anzu's feelings in the finale probably would have worked better if Atem had given any indication of even noticing her feelings for him
This was a lot of fun n super nostalgic. It made me revisit lost favorites episodes I hadn’t thought about in years! I’m really excited to see what else is in store. 😃😃
15:13 The best part about Attack the Moon is the card still wouldn't make what happened in the anime work. "Once per turn, when the battle position of a Rock monster you control is changed (such as Yugi changing Giant Soldier of Stone from Defense to Attack): You can target 1 Spell/Trap on the field (such as Mystical Moon); destroy that target." The reason why it doesn't work is because I misquoted the effect. The card actually only targets Spell/Traps _your opponent controls_ . Bonus fun fact: Yugi strengthened Silver Fang with Mystical Moon. This wouldn't work in real life because Mystical Moon only equips to Beast-Warriors, but Silver Fang is a Beast.
31:28 You've been including scenes that turned into cards, but it looks like you missed this one. The card Kaiba used here was Gyakutenno Megami, which was retrained into Goddess of Sweet Revenge. "While you control no cards and this is the only card in your hand, when an opponent's monster declares an attack: You can discard this card; destroy as many cards as possible your opponent controls, then you can Special Summon 1 monster from your Deck." This references how Kaiba was seemingly defenseless and about to be shot, but "discarded" the card to stop the attack and turn the situation around.
2:58:16 in the original the cards look like they do irl, while in 4kids version they have the artwork taking a huge portion of the cards leaving space only for attribute and stats at the bottom.
Atem wasn't using destiny draw to top deck. The Puzzle grants a luck boost in dire situations. It's only at the very end that Atem and Yugi are so powerful that they force that luck to bend to their will, allowing them to top deck constantly.
So, the manga kinda explains the whole "8 years to build a puzzle that no one else could build it and Yugi could build it in a few seconds" thing better - so the puzzle itself chooses who can solve it, and was testing Yugi the first time around (while deciding that everyone else just blows chunks). But now Yugi has earned the right to have the puzzle, so building it at this point is just a nothingburger. Also, the Heart of the Cards gets explained better too! So most people shuffle their decks and draw their cards randomly. But the pharaoh is different, as he has the ability to connect to his deck on a spiritual level. When the pharaoh is in a bind, his deck will try and provide beneficial cards whenever he draws. Is that cheating? I mean, yeah, but it doesn't always work out for the best, as the opponent's draws could work out better. EDIT: definitely want to double down on the kinda aspect of these two lore bits. Readers could also interpret these parts a little differently.
2:13:46 ok so to answer that, if your deck master leaves the field, you lose during the end phase, so you still got the rest of your turn, and if you manage to win during that turn, you win This also happened during Yugi's Duel with Kuriboh btw, where he tributed it for the effect of his rainbow bridge
Kaiba doing a Grand Prix where the winner duels YUGI?!?! What the hell kinda universe are we in? Also the fact that they invited Mai but she just didn't show up. Especially since she's wanted to duel Yugi for the longest time.
Bro idk why I feel like this vid should have like 5 million views by now I came back to watch it and just saw it had 72k keep up the good work maybe do a vid on GX
I still love Pharaoh's Memories, it's just a Memory where anything can happen like in a Dream, And we finally get explanations which is all I cared about. Gonna let you know rn tho, the Silent Swordman deck is already busted and they're gonna be releasing more support this year...
true, we did get the explanation which is what really matters, it’s just the way they gave it to us i didn’t enjoy unfortunately as for the silent support, i couldn’t be more excited…
Aight I've approachted the 3:15:00 hour mark, and that joke about "WW1 being an answer but not a good one" got me laughing out loud. Subscribed, would LOVE to see this for GX
2:55:53 so for the whole amelda thing in the dub. If I remember right, his brother went missing and dropped his action figure. And amelda thinks that Kaiba kidnapped his brother or something. It was pretty dumb even I knew it back then
3:27:23 So they did eventually make The Seal of Orichalcos and the Legendary Dragons real cards in the late 2010s. The Seal was a field spell that basically made you unable to use your extra deck, but it powered up all of your monsters which was pretty neat. I ran Critias in my Blue-Eyes deck and Mirror Force Dragon was awesome to use. Basically, if it was targeted by anything it would blow up my opponent's field. Cool card.
From what I know, the first three Yugioh Series, (YugiohDuel Monsters, Duel Monsters GX, and 5Ds) are all in the main anime timeline and aside from the original Yugioh manga and DM series Kazuki Takahashi worked on some storylines for GX and 5ds and even considered 5ds his last series, apparently he came up with Synchro Summoning. Everything after that he had no involvement in
The Clash in the Colisseum duel had so many great plays. When Yugi banished Obelisk for three turns with Lightforce Sword, he had no way of knowing which random card in Kaiba's hand he needed to select. So he waited for Kaiba to physically telegraph which card was Obelisk when he moved to summon it. Plus, my favorite moment in the entire series - the end, where Yugi used Diffusion Wave Motion completely unnecessarily. There was a 1,900-point difference between Yugi's Dark Paladin and each of Kaiba's Blue-Eyes, which was coincidentally exactly how many life points Kaiba had left. Yugi only needed to destroy ONE dragon for game. But Kaiba had dragged Yugi to the pinnacle of an ugly-as-sin tower and programmed a holographic arena full of holographic fans to cheer his name while he intended to embarrass Yugi on national television, which is the only reason he even threw this tournament in the first place. And Yugi had the spare life points, so it was only right that he spend them just to flex on that asshole.
My two main takeaways from this is 1. Calling anyone by anything other than their Dub names is cursed 2. It wouldn't be a "Bad" idea for the original YuGiOh anime to have some sort of remake.
There was a redub of the anime that was uncensored, but it only lasted a few episodes due to licensing issues. It's honestly a bummer. Like i actually would like to see this idea come back, konami could make it a special collectors items for older fans. At most it would get a pg13/ 12 (uk rating system) rating i think, and i would actually gladly pay up for it
So for 2:13:56. A rule of Deck Master duels is if your deck master is used as material for a extra summon, whether fusion, ritual or even tribute summon, that new monster becomes your deck master. 2:58:30 for this, blame the people at the freaking FCC for that. Tldr, the Anime is a Giant Ad for the card game, US doesnt like ads for lroducts that arent theirs, so they had to remove the text so that the cards dont look like the do irl to avoid ad rules 3:12:19 if I recall, the gruelsome details were forgone, the kids "disappeared" if i recall, hell Amelda/Alistor's brither Mikey didnt die but vanished after that tank incident, keavinf behind a toy 3:24:55 "please. As the president of a major corporation, I have to do that every day" 4:14:59 considering the irl version has 8 uses because thats how many times Atem drew until Anzu/Tea interfered, I'd say until he drew LITERALLY every mosnter in his deck
One thing I'll say about people not just "strong arming" cards from players. If the cards do have "souls" and sort of "Obey" their master. It makes sense they technically have to win them in duels. I know its a stretch and never explained, but thats what I'm assuming is the justification
I kind of agree. Like, I feel the anime would feel a lot less forced if it was less a card game and more along the lines of Shin Megami Tensei. Like, make these into battles between mages and summoners, not TCG players.
@@diamondmetal3062 I guess it's really all about the presentation at this point because I watch the show EXACTLY with that mindset and it makes it 1000x better, like not even close lol.
I recently watched the entire series subbed and I've been dying to get other people's reactions to it! So happy you did this. As a kid I actually stopped watching after the Noah ark so I never knew how battle city ended. Watching how the tournament ends was amazing. That Yugi-Kaiba duel was epic! Oh, and I absolutely HATED the memory world ark... it was like torture. I kept falling asleep during the episodes. So glad I'm not alone on that. But the lore is cool, especially how Kaiba could've been the Pharoah but for random chance. So cool! Anyway, thanks for the video. It was fun.
I love how Yugi denies Atem's Monster Reborn for the final move, preventing him from staying in the living realm by denying his card of resurrection. Hope you do GX next!

About that the ENGLISH version kind of removed some episodes from the Japanese version and kind of combined THAT missing episode into a SINGLE Duel for the English dub.
ik it’s literally been well over 15 years since i actually played the card game/check the ban list , etc, but i definitely remember people using 4000 at FIRST, and then around GX we started using 8000. i could be wrong tho its been 15+ years.
The dark rpg had a lot of potential. I mean exodia fighting zorc. The forging of the items. The father betraying atem for seto. A justified villain. The elements were there. Zorc beating the gods was fine because it was dumb seeing the Egyptian gods just be the end all .

in terms of the exodia pieces. we know multiple copies exist. however what is considered rare is owning all the pieces together in one deck. to the point the rare hunters were using fakes because they couldn't obtain multiple full sets. so one of the participants of duellist kingdom owning one single piece isn't unthinkable

Working out, grinding games, or at work itself, this'll be part of my rotation
Amazing work overall!
Three hours in and this is better than re-watching again all over lol. This is perfection on the summary and the jokes and the "if you know you know"
Putting this on in the background while I work, and only a couple minutes in I wanna share a fun fact!
Jonouchi's name in the 4-Kids dub being Joey is actually something the manga did! When Bandit Keith first met Jonouchi, he didn't want to bother saying his name right, so he shortened it to "Joey" and kept calling him that.
This is so gonna blow up in views
Watching/listening to this while working out. What a great trip down memory lane, read all the manga as a kid. Great video, would enjoy more like these, keep up the good work
1:58:58 had me in tears. I'm surprised that was the first accidental innuendo, given how much talk there is in Battle City about giving people the rod. 😭
3:41:28 btw that is a reference to the manga. Because those are the 'Battle Boxes' they use in the manga during Duelist Kingdom instead of the big Duel Arenas they use in the anime.
This was an excellent summary. Awesome job. Hope you can find the time to do this for the other series too!
Personal head canon: kaiba was only seen at school once (flashback not included) because he was only there because he heard rumours of another blue eyes in the area. He was running kaibacorp already at that point so it could be true. After destroying it, he had no reason to hang around
Fun facts here while I watch this video:
- Funny enough, in the manga they combine the DDM and burning building scene into one, that's where we were introduce to Duke's dad and his entire story. Its very different compare to what happened in the anime
- In Forbidden Memories there's a character call Isis who, bares a striking resemblance to Ishizu only, she looks way more smarky and pissed than the calm and collective Ishizu in the anime.
The original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga really is pretty dark my goodness
- Another difference between anime and manga is the hourglass Mai is in, instead of it being sand, int he manga its flesh eating scorpions which, is really uncomfortable when you think about it. Marik also tells Joey in the manga that now he basically has a day to save Mai or else she would die, which puts a timer on him and everyone else. Makes you happy that the Virtual World arc didn't happened in the manga huh
- How did 4Kidz censor Alister's brother's death in the dub? By how they always censor anyone who dies in this series, just say that they been "kidnapped"
Kinda wild i loved the virtual world arc when i was a kid and had no clue what filler was, looking back at it through this video it was complete ass aside from like 2 duels lol. Its such a weird break from the pretty tense Battle City stuff that happened before. Great video!
I guess my argument defending them trying to get the Puzzle off of the dueling arena in the burning building without using the carabiner is that maybe it was too hot from the fires to touch with their hands
15:10 the absolute state of the economy where you need to play trading cards to get enough money for a fishing boat.
Ironically, cash prizes for Duel Monsters tournaments was another facet of the series that stayed manga-only
Video till you fall asleep, while I won't
What does this mean
Yugitoad when he sees Yugi's mom: "Who the fuck are you?"
Yugitoad when he sees Joey's sister: "Why the fuck are you?"
Takahashi said JoJo was a huge influence on YuGiOh!
I could see that
The was really well done…I can’t binge watch yu-gi-oh even though I love it so much…I get gassed from the repetition but I’m really happy you gave us the run down…I know it’ll be taxing but you should do a recap of each
yu-gi-oh series. Gx, 5D’s, Zexal, Arc-V, VRains, Sevens & Rush!!!!!
So good! Thanks for all your effort I had such a fun time listening to your commentary about the series!
This is a really great high effort video my dude. It’s hard to find good summaries of media and this was excellent visually as well.
Yeah, that actually recontextualises a lot.
IT WOULD BE SO COOL TO GET ANOTHER ONE OF THESE I LOVE THIS VIDEO
The DDM game on the gba was great.
The Zorc arc was wild, i wanna see if it was clearer in the manga at some point because there's something great trying to claw it's way out of that mess.
Anzu's feelings in the finale probably would have worked better if Atem had given any indication of even noticing her feelings for him
4+ hours of Yu-Gi-Oh anime content sign me up. I expect more
what a ride. I hope you gonna do this for GX aswell. You really made my day today. I still can't believe how long it took for pot of greed to show up.
This was a lot of fun n super nostalgic. It made me revisit lost favorites episodes I hadn’t thought about in years! I’m really excited to see what else is in store. 😃😃
Yugioh, where tea has best win loss ratio, and grandpa muto is the actual damsel in distress
"While you control no cards and this is the only card in your hand, when an opponent's monster declares an attack: You can discard this card; destroy as many cards as possible your opponent controls, then you can Special Summon 1 monster from your Deck."
This references how Kaiba was seemingly defenseless and about to be shot, but "discarded" the card to stop the attack and turn the situation around.
The Cody Rhodes joke at 3:12:50 fucking got me lmao
Hey, come on. Skipping the rematch between Jounochi and Yugi is simply a Rocky III reference.
Watch it with the boom mic, friend! Amazing video. I found it right when i got an itch to rewatch some nostalgic episodes.
2:13:46 ok so to answer that, if your deck master leaves the field, you lose during the end phase, so you still got the rest of your turn, and if you manage to win during that turn, you win
This also happened during Yugi's Duel with Kuriboh btw, where he tributed it for the effect of his rainbow bridge
TGSAnime thinks its more that, if you use your deck master to create a new monster, that monster becomes your new deck master
@@Lucario1121 yes, also that
Kaiba doing a Grand Prix where the winner duels YUGI?!?!
Gonna let you know rn tho, the Silent Swordman deck is already busted and they're gonna be releasing more support this year...
true, we did get the explanation which is what really matters, it’s just the way they gave it to us i didn’t enjoy unfortunately
as for the silent support, i couldn’t be more excited…
Damn I would absolutely LOVE a video like this for GX. I love how that show embraces how batshit crazy a world that revolves around card games can be.
Man, how much work and hours of script & editing have you put on this? Excellent job, I am enjoying every second of it!
The bakugan reference hiding so deep in the video
Blessed be the guy on the Internet that sparknotes yugioh for me when I quick reference when writing fanfiction.
"Do police just not exist in this universe" THAT'S WHAT IM SAYING LMAO
Thank you for this. Reliving the nostalgia going through all the episodes was amazing, and you / your commentary were very entertaining.
What a fun video! Hope you do this for the other series too! So good!
Cool card.
Can't wait for the GX retrospective!
Great work on this video. I watched the whole thing. Looking forward to Duel academy series and 5D's after. See you next stage...
Everything after that he had no involvement in
You know I never question why Kiaba was in class. I never thought he was part of class like I thought he was just there to spy.
Outstanding video. It was nice going through the OG with you. Now do a tier list of every duel in of Yu-Gi-Oh
…hmmmm 📝✍️
Wow, hombre, man HIGHLY HIGHLY entertaining. CANT WAIT FOR GX!!
My two main takeaways from this is
1. Calling anyone by anything other than their Dub names is cursed
Tldr, the Anime is a Giant Ad for the card game, US doesnt like ads for lroducts that arent theirs, so they had to remove the text so that the cards dont look like the do irl to avoid ad rules
3:12:19 if I recall, the gruelsome details were forgone, the kids "disappeared" if i recall, hell Amelda/Alistor's brither Mikey didnt die but vanished after that tank incident, keavinf behind a toy
3:24:55 "please. As the president of a major corporation, I have to do that every day"
4:14:59 considering the irl version has 8 uses because thats how many times Atem drew until Anzu/Tea interfered, I'd say until he drew LITERALLY every mosnter in his deck
In the manga, Yugi doesn't bet his deck against Weevil. He bets his life.
Obelisk the Tormentor, Slifer the Executive Producer, and MEGA ULTRA CHICKEN!!
not joey just "dying" and "coming back to life" un-traumatized LOL
One thing I'll say about people not just "strong arming" cards from players. If the cards do have "souls" and sort of "Obey" their master. It makes sense they technically have to win them in duels. I know its a stretch and never explained, but thats what I'm assuming is the justification
I kind of agree. Like, I feel the anime would feel a lot less forced if it was less a card game and more along the lines of Shin Megami Tensei. Like, make these into battles between mages and summoners, not TCG players.
@@diamondmetal3062 I guess it's really all about the presentation at this point because I watch the show EXACTLY with that mindset and it makes it 1000x better, like not even close lol.
loved this video ^^
hopefully you can do the same with the other yugioh spin offs
1:36:45 it's funny you say this here because 4kids didn't censor specifically this episode AT ALL lol
I loved the video, It would be nice to see you do this with the dsod movie and pyramid of light
Man you brought back so many hidden memories thank you
Loving the video recap so far ( up to Odion vs Joey) feel free to add some background music to the narration like some light music to fill the gaps.
Also, not sure what was going on with your mic but it really hurt my ears 😂
If you can please make sure the crackling doesn't happen or give some headphone warnings 😅
About that the ENGLISH version kind of removed some episodes from the Japanese version and kind of combined THAT missing episode into a SINGLE Duel for the English dub.
Fun fact, in the real life game, LP was never 2000 OR 4000. It was ALWAYS 8000 in the real life game.
ik it’s literally been well over 15 years since i actually played the card game/check the ban list , etc, but i definitely remember people using 4000 at FIRST, and then around GX we started using 8000. i could be wrong tho its been 15+ years.
Except in speed duels. It’s 4000 in speed duels.
The dark rpg had a lot of potential. I mean exodia fighting zorc. The forging of the items. The father betraying atem for seto. A justified villain. The elements were there. Zorc beating the gods was fine because it was dumb seeing the Egyptian gods just be the end all .
Dude how how HOW!! I saw a 30 second video and I- I can’t help myself 🥹 you sucked me in!! Idk how you do stuff like this but omg you deserve soooo many likes for this video 😭😂❤
Valon’s deck was so hype. I’ve been wanting it to be real for so long.
Man, this was a fun watch. Thank you for this video. Please please do the other Yugioh series
in terms of the exodia pieces. we know multiple copies exist. however what is considered rare is owning all the pieces together in one deck. to the point the rare hunters were using fakes because they couldn't obtain multiple full sets. so one of the participants of duellist kingdom owning one single piece isn't unthinkable
“(Pegasus) activates a trap door like a cartoon.” My guy. It is exactly a cartoon lmao
This was a masterful video. Thank you so much!
Dungeon dice monster the GBA game was so much fun to play as kid, I still have it today and occasionally play it when I need a break from master duel
“Bakura uses his Millenium gaydar”
