Thanks for these demos, especially the encouragement to just keep painting. I am really needing that today! There’s a huge lesson at the end of the first painting. It was looking a little dark and then you added more dark contrast on the sand and it was as if you turned the lights on! Suddenly the lights on the water really popped. So sometimes achieving light is about going even darker, which is sort of counterintuitive. 🤔
I love your videos and I’m pacing myself to watch years of your work. I’ve missed out on the giveaways, although I feel like a winner every time I watch your reviews, updates and lessons.
Lovely painting, and the second one reminds me of my cruise around Norway. Love it! Sometimes, less is more. I learned that if I get a new gouache set, to get the non-acrylic.
Re-watching this demo to review your tips. Excellent instruction, Sarah! Having Sta-Wet palette paper and sponge has been a game changer for me with gouache. Getting used to the colour shift as it dries and that it reactivates layers below is definitely tricky, but now use that to my advantage.
Nice work. I’m just branching out into gouache and find that I overwork my paintings with too much detail. I’m going to borrow your use of a large brush to lay in the the initial shapes. I love that you explain what you’re doing and you’re reasoning behind it. Looking forward to whatever else you decide to share. Much appreciated.
Thank you for this tutorial. I am inspired by your style. I'm new to gouache and trying to absorb as much as I can from watching and hearing others who are expert. This video has been perfect for me.
Hello Sarah! I deeply appreciate your generous spirit and enjoy learning your approach with gouache. You’re a fine instructor and your paintings are truly beautiful. Deep bows in your direction. Peace, Jasper
As a real watercolour beginner can i just substitute watercolour colours for gouache colours. I appreciate that they will act differently. I too like the mountain scene. Cheers Mark
I am new to gouache thanks to having discovered your videos. Really loving your teaching style and your beautiful paintings. What’s the music on this one?
Very nice. I have to admit I'm nervous about starting with gouache. Oils was my medium and on top of that I haven't painted for years. Starting in again, being rusty, with a new medium that's difficult and works completely differently than what I'm used to is going to be a challenge. Any advice?
I feel you. But honestly painting with gouache often feels like painting with oils as it blends, except it dries faster. If you work wet into wet it feels so similar. Go check out Mike Hernandez (squatchgouache on Instagram) and you'll see how it looks like oil too!
I have a few pads of canvas paper, in the past I’ve used this paper for mixed media work. I think it’s sold as a paper for acrylics, I wonder if it would be good for gouache..
In my experience, gouache doesn’t do well on a surface that is shiny / glossy at all. So if the canvas paper is matte or has some tooth to it, I’m sure it would be fine!
What is the white thing your paint is on? Is that just a piece of plastic or stay wet paper? Also i notice you use gouache from the tube. If u don’t use all that you squeeze out what do u do w it? I recently started gouache and I squeezed them into pans to dry like watercolor and now I’m wishing I hadn’t.
If you check out my most recent gouache videos you can see I use a sealed gouache palette now, it’s much more convenient. But yea sometimes I use a tray with gouache from the tube, especially if it’s a limited palette
Thank you! I use the Sta-Wet sponge and acrylic palette paper. I have also seen some people use damp paper towels but those get a little too runny/messy for my taste.
@@SarahBurnsStudio thank you - must try that out. so far I've been using just my palette and a piece of watercolour 'waste' paper to try out the colour and adjust moisture before applying. This looks neat.
Dang, sooo pretty. You inspire my journey into gouache. I have a question for you. When you were in the states where did you get your Holbein paints from? I have picked up a few from a local art supply store in Madison, WI and they are M Graham. On that note I have read from other artists that when using those in the field the honey in them attracts ants. Would like to get a set of Holbein and perhaps Winsor & Newton. Anyway....love your videos...only do UA-cam and Instagram.
That's wonderful to hear Toni! I got my paints from an art store in Denver called Meininger. It's like a candy store for artists! They even let you try stuff out before you buy it. I will point out that after using the holbeins for over a year, I am starting to shift away from them. The older they get the more "stiff" they get right out of the tube. They are extremely opaque but I worry about their shelf life. I have a few W&N colors that so far are staying very creamy. I haven't tried any other brands and I'm curious about them.
@@SarahBurnsStudio I used Windsor and Newton for years, years ago when I painted birds in gouache. Loved it. Moved on to other mediums, acrylic and oil, and eventually they all dried out, but it took some time to do so!!
Hi! Have anyone used the blue scotch tape as she does in the video? Does it rip the paper underneath when taking it off? I usually use a similar purpose tape (but mine comes in a cream color) and absolutely destroys de paper! Thank you in advance for any advice or help!
I've used the blue tape for years, on nearly every type of paper. It doesn't rip it. With most tapes, you have to wait for the paper to 100% dry before removing, and if it still rips it, try using a hairdryer to heat it up before peeling.

I think the background of the second one is absolutely gorgeous-wouldn’t change it!!😊
Lovely paintings and good narration - thank you!

Learnt more than expected fr your video. About not just being a bystander. Having faith in myself.

I enjoy watching your painting and your chatting.
Thank you so much!
Thank you for this very helpful video. I love your painting and really appreciate your narration as well. All the best!
I prefer the artist to talk while painting, otherwise I get hypnotised into a deeep sleeep! :)
me too :o)
Both are lovely paintings. Thanks for the tips.
Thanks so much 😊

Beautiful paintings! I must say that the peeling of the tape looks super satisfying
Haha yea it is VERY satisfying 😄
I thought exactly the same thing.
Enjoyed watching your process and and hearing your comments. Loved the paintings.
Thank you for letting me know :D
These are excellent Sarah! Subscribed and look forward to more lovely paintings 😍
Thanks so much! 😊
Very beautiful. Thank you ☺️
Loved the demo
I just happened upon your channel while searching gouache painting. Great video!!!
Thanks Patricia!

Absolutely superb!!!!!!!

Gouache is opaque so you can’t quite achieve the same thing.
Love it! 🌸

I like the look the tape gives you. Did it take time to get used to the blue tape. ? Ii will try it and see if it throws me off or not.
Not at all, never bothered me
Gorgeous! I’m inspired to use my gouache. Are your paints on palette paper and what is underneath it?
It's a piece of acrylic palette paper, underneath is a thin wet sponge
Good video, thanks. When you're done, do you do a final finish such as setting w instant dry,.wax, or some sealant?
Thank you :) Nope I don't do any of that. Either it's in my sketchbook as a study, in a drawer for storage, or it's framed behind glass.
Hi! What type of paper is that in your palette? Love your content! 🎉
It's Masterson Sta-Wet palette paper

I really like your use of the paper and (I guess) sponge for a palette. Can you use the colors again or do you start with a fresh pallet?
If it dries completely I will replace the colors. But I can enclose the sponge and colors in a sealable palette and save them for days.
What is the "paper" over your sponge that you are using? Thanks for the gouache tips, they are very helpful.
Its the Sta-Wet palette paper for acrylics.
@@SarahBurnsStudio Thank you Sarah!
Very impressive work! What is this wet palette????
Just a tray with a Sta-wet sponge and palette paper
@@SarahBurnsStudio okay , thanks

What kind of white? Titanium or Zinc or other?
I usually use zinc white to mix with and titanium white for final brights
So cool !
You mentioned two artists in the video. One was Nathan fowkes. Who was the second one? Didn't catch the name! Love your videos ❤️
What did it sound like? Haha I can’t remember

what did you use as mixing pallette?
Its palette paper on top of a sponge
How come the paintings don’t damage one another When closing the sketchbook 🤔
Because it’s an incredibly thin, non sticky membrane

lol I watched the first one about a dozen times cuz I was afraid it might not come back 😁
Sorry!! I had to edit one little bit because of an audio issue.
No problem at all, I just concentrated! These how-tos, especially gouache, are priceless! Thx🙏🏻
It's called "painter's tape"
i'd let you talk my ear off if it's about art...hehehe
