  • Silent amateur movies of Harrisburg, Pa and surrounding areas around 1940. The film was very dry, brittle, "frosted" and, though it was originally color film, it became faded. We didn't throw it out though. We did our best at scanning it and digitizing it - and - here it is! Are any of the areas familiar?

I wish the camera operator had panned just a little more to the right from the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Bridge. The presence or absence of the Finance Building would help date this video. We know it's before 1942 because the current Dauphin County courthouse at Front & Market was built that year, and is missing here...

The beginning is obviously around the Capitol and State St. Bridge. At 3:28 it appears to be the Greenbrier Hotel in WV. The construction starting around 7:17 might be the PA Turnpike.
