- The Curse of Architect Stephen Hills: The first Pennsylvania Capitol building in Harrisburg PA was designed by Architect Stephen Hills to house the Pennsylvania Government, after they moved out of the Independence Hall in Philadelphia. During a snow storm in 1897, the Capitol burned to the ground leaving only a shell and the 6 front pillars remaining. The pillars were dispersed throughout the Commonwealth but 3 are missing.
In this video I locate and investigate the known pillars, disprove pillars that were previously believed to be part of the 6 originals and attempt to determine what happened to the 3 missing pillars.
In February of 2024, this video was added to the Capitol Fire exhibit, at the Pennsylvania National Fire Museum in Harrisburg.:

It’s eerie that all Hill’s buildings were destroyed in a fire.
Definitely! Very strange.
FREEMASONS HIDDING HIS STORY
It's eerie how literally every city in America were destroyed by fires. Some 3 times over.
And all this time we all thought the Market St. columns were from the Capitol. They were HUGE! Good work tracking them down. It chokes me up seeing the original. Good job, Barry! I thought you were going to say Stephen Hills died in a fire. Lol!
Lol yeah he appeared to be cursed though. Thank you!
Thank You!
This came up in the suggestions videos. Very happy it did! Good video.
There are some beautiful buildings in your area showing great history. Your editing is awesome.
Thank you Richard!
love the mic sound, came from the amazon review, to the other video and now to this video lol, also liked the editing and the video in general !
Thank you. I'm still loving the mic.
Great information! I nevet saw the photos if the burned building. Wow, not much left! When we did the Harrisburg Cemetery Walk, we were told that those beautiful statues they have there, the artist was never paid. Sad.
Interesting video! 🤗
Thank you!
Good video. Very interesting
Thank you Naomi!
I just drove past this building. And wasn’t sure what it was. The pillars are definitely still there standing in front of a giant brick building
Interesting video. An aside: the brownstone columns from the Old Dauphin County Courthouse were quarried from sandstone at Connewago Road in northern York County, and a piece that was rejected is in somone's yard, visible from the road, at 1721 Connewago Road.
Thanks Dave. I didn't know that about the quarry. I will have go check it out thanks. I always heard the quarry in Goldsboro was used for the capitol building but it appears it might have been used for the current capitol building since it wasn't established when the Hills Capitol was built. Looking at the records, the hills Capitol was built from many different quarries in the area to supply what they needed.
What a great video! I’d love to see your take on the State Street Bridge and the massive eagles that sit on the pylons. There was to be a museum built under it as well.
Thank you! I have been thinking about the State Street Bridge. Interesting about the museum. Didn't know about that. Will definitely look into it!
@@runningintohistory Growing up in Harrisburg the doors at the base of the pylons would tease me every time we drove by.
Interesting. I never even noticed the doors. Wonder what it looks like in there...maybe I can convince the city to let me in lol
@@runningintohistory What I learned about those pylons on the state street Bridge is that it holds some historical documents. Among the papers is a list of soldiers that died during WW1 in which Frank P. Hawk is listed. Has many service men listed from other wars also.
Oh very interesting. I will see if I can dig up more info. Would love to get inside there.
I've seen 3 of the pillars. McElhatten, Jersey Shore and one on private property near JS.
I actually just obtained permission to see the one on Private Property. I also think I figured out where the others went. Stay tuned for Part 2!
I can't find any pictures of the actual construction of the Harrisburg Capitol building? Why would we not have proof of any phases of the construction?
Are you referring to the current capitol building? I didn't look into the current capitol much but the prior two capitols have a few reports on the capitol preservation page that discusses the construction and which local quarries were used. Not sure about the current capitol but the preservation committee that I was talking to has an office in the capitol open to the public and they have no problems discussing their work.
I found a photo of the market street bridge in 1906 with the big white pillars, not the smaller sandstone pillars that are there now. Upon research I found an article from 1941 making mention of the sandstone pillars at the entrance to Market Street Bridge. So some time between 1906 and 1941 the white columns that flanked the bridge disappeared.
Actually I think you are talking about the photo of the 1906 dedication of the bridge that I included in my video. That is the same pillars that are there now, they just removed the bulb at the top at some point.
@@runningintohistory hmm yeah you're right, the color was what got me, on this photo they are white, but they are brown now, must have painted them back then
@@kokkodrums yeah the Capitol Historian told me why they removed the bulb but I do not remember the reason.
i can't believe they wouldn't let you see pillar #2.
Yeah disappointing.
more drone videos please

...and in 1972 a crack commando unit was framed for a crime they didn't commit.. I swear this guy did the voice over for the A-Team
😅
That's hilarious and an honor! That was my favorite show growing up so yeah that's exactly the vibe I am looking for here. I need to look up who that was!
Looks like that was John Ashley. Unfortunately he died in 1997.
