I feel like you're the only vocal coach in the world that has ever correctly answered this question. Bravo! That makes it SOOO much clearer. This has been a point of confusion for me ever since I started singing.
I agree! You listen to classical teaches and they say "breathing is key, is the most important" and then you go to an SLS teacher (like Brett Manning) and you hear "breathing is not important, feel relax, that's all". It's so good we have Justin and his great answers!

New York Vocal Coaching I'll be Jean Valjean in Les Miz at The Villages, FL. March 11-15, 2015. My brother was in the OBC 28 years ago! Come on down and your ticket's on me! I'll be using a blanket my deceased Mom crocheted for me in my death scene and your techniques throughout! Thanks again. You have truly improved my technique (and my comfort level!)
Jack Kolinski Wow Jack! Sensational. No doubt that you mother will be there with you through every glorious note. It is also a Joy to be a part of this tremendous beauty in some small way Jack. Sending you vast blessings for a soul-stirring performance and a life-elevating experience!
Thank you for pronouncing her name properly. You won me over just from that; shows that you take the time to be correct. But awesome channel! Glad I found it! Most vocal coaches are very cryptic and teach in terms of "feelings" (which I still appreciate the value of). Though, sometimes it's just nice to explicitly hear what should be going on.
Thank you so much Justin! I have been wondering about this question very long time! and you gave me a hundred percent satisfying answer!!! again thank you so much!!
Wonderful! There is so much that I wish I had learned when I was taking lessons from other coaches. Justin is the best I have found, which is why I wanted to work for him. Have you seen Justin's vocal training course: voicelessonstotheworld.com/page/vocal_course It's fabulous and affordable. -NYVC
This question always bothered me, I've been practicing my breathing because I can't seem to hold on to my notes, the sustain goes away. So you maintain what you created in the long breath! Thanks a lot. Shall practice upon that now. :)
Sorry it too so long to answer. Justin has been busy and has asked me to reply to the posts. He has put out another video on breathing you might like. #92. Check it out.
I used to be so concerned about breathing that I was pushing out my stomach. I finally realised that I just had to breathe naturally. So many teachers explain it the wrong way that it makes you tighten your diaphragm rather than really use it
My teacher told me that ur abd should expand when u exhale. I'm a medical profession and I know it doesnt work anatomically. What you say Justin makes a lot of sense, Thank you !
I was always confused if I should squeeze my abs after the inhale to "support" the notes that I'm making. Now I know the answer and thank you so much for that! 👌💪
@@NewYorkVocalCoaching May I have a question if you're going to keep on making these videos, please? Even if they slightly repeat themselves in the future, it would be awesome to have that place where we would come for advice. 😊
This is just what I needed. My teacher had me focus on core support, and I was really tight in my entire abdominal region; and I've been having throat tension. BTW "Hara" is Japanese for stomach : )
Oh my god, that's great! At leady now I can be in peace that I'm not doin my journey wrong but wt i really have to do is to little by little focus on everything not just think that singing is "Diagphragm" 💙💙💙
I know you say not to squeeze the upper abs. I find that I do try and maintain the space when I breath abdominally and rib-wise, but if I am singing an extremely long phrase, I do sometimes find that I feel like I end up squeezing my abs to get the phrase out. I've tried to change this but I kind of feel like it is inevitable. What do you suggest to change this since I am assuming this is wrong?
Hello sir I am Vartika from India I can't send mail but I hope you will accept my question that some times during singing, after a line suddenly a strong or powerful line comes and in that situation I am not able to sing that line in that powerful way like in the BTS song blood sweat and tears after nae pi ttam nunmul............ gaaaa it comes Wonhae manhi manhi. I am not able to give much power in wonhae manhi manhi and I have one more question that how can we sing in a swagful voice like for rapping. Please sir i am requesting you to answer my question in your next episode. Thanks❤️❤️
Hi Pragati! You might benefit from developing your Mix voice for those powerful parts of the songs. Give yourself time to coordinate your Mix Voice! We have lots of episodes on Mix you can watch! -NYVC
Hi Justin, I really need this answer. Why does every singers' chest rises even when they are using diaphragmatic breathing? Coaches teach that our chest should remain still while breathing, but this isn't the case when singers truly sing. Their chest rises during inhale all the time...
Archie is correct; every singer's chest doesn't raise (and many would consider this bad technique). It is helpful to raise the sternum before you even take a breath (if you are not sure of the position then raise your arms out and above your head (like wings) and bring them back down again without letting the chest fall). The position should not be exaggerated. Now you're ready to breathe and if you breathe abdominally or even into the ribs (which are already in a good position thanks to your preparation), you can breathe without your chest going anywhere. The next step after this is to not let the chest "collapse" as you exhale, but that's the next part of the journey. To do this well takes practice, so don't lose heart.
I thought I had this all covered after practicing for months, I understood maintaining the space, but was doing that by excess tensing, (I think that's what you mean by clenching the abs?) The rough thing is it works, but feels uncomfortable and distracts from focusing on pitch and other factors, I'm trying to maintain it by minimal engagement from today? (Lightly sustaining it so the breath doesn't drop) Even though it seems I have less time with that breath would you say that is the correct method? 😊
Daniel, once you are breathing freely and flexibly (preferably low abdominal and rib), then you need to apply appoggio. With appoggio you "lean" the air into the body (some people lean on the chest, some the back). You effectively create a compression chamber which means that the air comes out much more slowly. Justin has an episode and exercises to develop appoggio (typically involves hissing). The benefits of even air flow are many (like running out of breath) but it also protects our vocal organs from being force flushed with air. Work on learning the different component aspects - how to breath, appoggio, how to keep the larynx neutral, what do so with my tongue, etc and then it comes down to co-ordination. Because when you sing to some degree you're trying to rub your tummy whilst patting your head (to use an old childhood analogy) it is when each component is in "muscle memory" that we can do this co-ordination. It is worth it. I trained, and my partner is a professional singer. We both reckon hitting an amazing note that rings like a bell is the very best experience on the planet bar none. I do hope this helps a little. Keep going, you can do this, and I am genuinely impressed with the component focus on this amazing website as a way to build up each element which we need to master. Singing is speaking at pitch, so having a speech therapist leading us through this makes perfect sense. Avanti and always remember that you never stop learning in this game, not least because your instrument is your body and as your body changes (whether by mood, by activity, or by aging) so does your voice. The most fascinating journey that develops a deep relationship with your body at its best (a view; doesn't make me right) :)

Ok now I’m a bit confused: I learned how to do a mixed belt BY squeezing the abs and bearing downward as opposed to simply pushing the stomach in. I don’t know what to go with.
Hi Maverick! This is definitely one way to compress the vocal folds and achieve a strong sound through the middle voice. However, this is not a sustainable way to achieve a Mix as it encourages overcompression and doesn't allow for healthy breathing technique. You'll want to learn how to create various degrees of compression paired with flexibility, without such severe abdominal tension. We would recommend working through all of our breathing episodes so that you can gain a better understanding of this and then go from there. justin can you pleeeease make a video about throatiness or a throaty song i send you an email about it , basically i support my singing and make sure my solar plexus is not tight at all but still get a bit of a soreness if you will after singing and apparently is due to throatiness please help me
Hey Justin! So I've watched your videos on the solar plexus and started applying the things I learned for a while now. But still I have one question - when you do the long HISS, do you pop out (forward and a bit up) the solar plexus at the start of the hiss and keep it up and going forward little by little (the solar plexus) or do you gradually raise and pop out the solar plexus + pull in slowly the lower abdominal muscles from the start of the hiss to the end? Cause I sometimes do 50 secs, sometimes 30 secs and it really frustrates me not knowing which way is the right one. Keeping it poped out and up - I feel some tension coming to my upper abdominals sometimes around the 25-30 sec.. Also, do you clench(tense) your butt when you do it? I have the feeling it must be relaxed. Thanks again for another great video! Wish everything good to you and your team at NYVC! CHEERS!
Oh! That's okay, Leah! Keep at it! We're so glad it helped your vocal range too. That must mean you are doing something right with it! Great work! -NYVC

Justin!Keep hearing about support, but still don't understand it.I take breath low like i should, but then i don't know what to do.Some people say push down, tight the low abs,but doing that seems to create more tension in the throat. What do i do Justin? How to control the air?
