Another info on Battle City: Much like Excite Bike, it has a map creator where you can create your own map. We used to as kids protect our eagle with steel and never lose.
Battle City was huge in Russia, and I mean HUUUUGE, definitely one of the most famous games in 90's Russia and other post-Soviet countries, almost everyone had it on Chinese multicarts, along with SMB and other zero-mapper games.
kind of surprised Battle City was never released in the US. it was so much fun back in the days. it's very simple gameplay, but very well executed. it is one of those games that everyone loved back then.
Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti has the same energy as all those 80s/90s Saturday morning cartoons that were based on R rated movies xD And Mysterious Murasame Castle got exactly one international release, exclusively on the 3DS eShop with very little fanfare. If anyone wants to play it officially, pick it up before the eShop for legacy systems goes down next year!
I may be in the minority but I really wish Mysterious murasame castle was on switch online I know there’s a 3ds version localized but I’d rather play nes games on a home console you know? Rental service be damned!
Mysterious Murasame Castle is to Legend of Zelda what Kid Icarus is to Metroid. Pretty much the same game engine, but in a linear level-to-level structure rather than an extremely early example of an "open world" for lack of a better word.
It's not as polished as some of Konami's other offerings, but still worth checking out. Takes a little getting use to as the hook needs you to have really good aim
The grappling hook mechanic is taken straight from Konami's Roc'n'Rope arcade game. And the best part? The guy who designed both of these games left Konami for Capcom and designed, you guessed it, Bionic Commando.
Ah, yes, Battle City, otherwise known as that one game that was always shoved onto a million and one bootleg multicarts. Gonna have to try out a few of these Konami games, I think! The last one sounded like it had some rad music and I do love me some NES Konami soundtracks. 👌
A couple of these games often were added in the Chinese muticarts that were common in south America so must of us who had a famiclone played it or a variation of as a random number of Mario and a mario head slapped into the main character head XD
Battle City was on a 20-in-1 bootleg cart that the local video store would rent out (complete with Famicom to NES converter dongle!) and it was a lot of fun.
Arumana no Kiseki is a riff on a Konami arcade game called 'Roc n Rope', which was a single screen game where you use the odd angled rope to ascend to the top of the screen while avoiding enemies. Arumana seems like it wanted to take that mechanic into modern platformer era and they decided just to use the 'castlevania engine' to squeeze it out right quick.
Yes, Konami did have a lot of games left behind in Japan. They also had a secondary North American label to get around Nintendo's game release cap. Simply put, Konami just made a shit ton of games for the Famicom.
I have been working on a list on and off for over a year now of english friendly famicom games. I have over 47 games added to the list so far and plan to add lot more. Love the console lots of great games I wish we could have got here in the states.
Wai Wai World is just about a metroidvania in structure, but also has a 2 player simultaneous co-op feature. It's really good! It also has a sequel that's more of a straight platformer where you pick from a team of 3 Konami characters. It's also really good.
My wife, kids and I just moved into our new house and I'd like to say that this is the first UA-cam video I've taken the time to watch amidst the chaos of unpacking.
For anyone who wants to own Nazo no Murasame Jou, the game was released on the 3DS eShop Virtual Console as The Mysterious Murasame Castle. I highly recommend picking it up before you can't.
Great video! It is always amazing being introduced to "new" Famicom games. Some of these look really fun! I didn't know the first Goonies game was not localized on the NES. I always forget that North America only got a fraction of games from Japan localized! I'm glad we are able to play many of these games that we missed out on from the 80s and 90s.
You either die as a Hero (Westwood, Maxis, Sierra and many other now defunct studios) or you live long enough to become your own enemy (EA, Ubisoft, Konami and many other studios)
Insta-thumbs-up :) So it was well worth the wait and that $5 spent on your Patreon. Big thanks SNESdrunk for this one. You should've mentioned The Iris Missions romhack when you were talking about Layla though (from which you've taken some music - the original game has much more underwhelming soundtrack).
Hard to mention Layla without bringing up the Iris Missions romhack. Probably better on all fronts but the original is an absolute satisfying game to complete once you've successfully navigated through the labyrinth that is the final few asteroids. I've not heard of a game refer to itself as a "maze action game" until I played Layla and it did not disappoint on that claim.
It's a great game in theory but the execution is a little janky in places. I definitely recommend playing through once, though, and you'll see what I mean when you do.
I have a modded NES Classic full of 17,000 games on platforms ranging from original arcade to Atari 2600, from Famicom Disc System to Neo Geo, from Genesis to Turbo Grafx, and I often don’t know where to begin. It’s overwhelming. Your channel has been extremely helpful in helping me make a list of where to start. Keep up the great work, I always look forward to seeing your videos!
I don't know if I've ever told you how much I appreciate you SnesDrunk, so here it is. I really appreciate you mate. Thanks for the videos and the information therein.
I’m a huge Splatterhouse fan so I wound up getting a translated repro for the NES…no regrets there, fantastic game. Layla also looks right up my alley, I’ll have to check it out
The reason Gradius II looks so good is due to the VRC4 chipset which allowed for enhanced visuals and sound on the Famicon. To keep control of the large American market, Nintendo of America would not allow the use of special NES chips until the 90s, so everything had to be on the standard MCC chipset. Because of this, many games had to be either reprogrammed to fit the US cartridge (Contra) or just not released at all.
VRC4 doesn't allow for more sound channels. It's all Hidenori Maezawa's magic. And Contra wasn't re-programmed for any MMC chip, its NES version runs on an UNROM board, which is quite a feat.
Yo, SNES Drunk! Great content as always! Anyways, I also enjoy playing NES games, as the NES was a good part of my life... I just wanted to say that SOME of the games in this list can actually be downloaded translated by fans. The ones I got here are: Holy Diver, Wai Wai World, Moon Crystal and Armana no Kiseki, so far... I mean, the whole point of these videos is pointing out that u don't necessarily need to know Japanese in order to play them, I just wanted to let u guys know that there are translations available... Cheers!
Hi no Tori is a genuinely beautiful manga. One of the best ones I've ever read, so if anyone has a chance to give it a shot - by all means, please do. The game is okay too, not amazing, but good. There's a lot of good stuff in the video, like Splatterhouse and some other Konami games.
Gradius 2 is a top 3 shmup on NES/Famicom and is my personal favorite of the series. I also think it’s the easiest of at least the first three games, although it’s plenty challenging.
Great video! There was a rpg for the famicon called Radia Senki: Reimeihen, and theres an english patch for it. Its pretty gosh darn good, with great story and a solid combat system. Really work checking out if you're into NES rpgs 4:36 lmfao didn't expect that one
Radia Senki was pretty good, an action RPG with a fully active party on a system you'd never think capable of it the translation patch missed the protagonist's default name (press start without entering a name), so for those curious it's Ramuna (or Lamuna)
YES, YES, YES! For many years I wondered what was the name of that game from childhood. It was a bootleg and I never could find it. I'm very glad that you mention it :D
I just want to say that your my favorite video game channel on twitch you been keeping me coming back and enjoying your content especially during the pandemic keep up the with the good content 👊🏽😎
Hi no Tori Houou-hen = Phoenex, the Houou arc, adapting part of the classic Osamu Tezuka manga... probably not with a lot of faithfulness given what the footage looks like lol Layla looks like a game I'd enjoy a lot and that Splatterhouse game is adorable!
This is great to see, I went on a huge Konami kick at the start of lockdown and ended up playing a bunch of these that I never knew existed. King Kong 2: Ikari no Megaton Punch and Getsu Fuma Den are also good ones to add. Konami had SO MANY Famicom games it's unreal.
I collect these types of games so this is a good reference video for me. I do have English translated repros of Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti and Sweet Home (no regrets) as well as a still growing stack of authentic Famicom cartridges. Now it looks like I've found a few more to add.
Great video and nice suggestions! I was happy to see you put The Mysterious Murasame Castle 🏯 in there. That game was also released on the Japanese GBA and as a download in the US on the 3DS. It's definitely a lot of fun and it's certainly no pushover in the challenge department. I would really like to see Nintendo develop a sequel to that game. Hey, if Konami gave us a new Getsu Fuma Den, then why not
I grew up in Europe in a scene of Chinese Famiclones, and Battle City was a staple of everyone's gaming. It was such a great pick up and play game, for 1 or 2 players, and was included into almost every single multi-cart compilation, which were popular. So I always found it very bizarre that it wasn't released in North America and no one here has ever heard of it.
Really enjoyed this video. As someone who's used to playing their oldschool games "any way you can" it's real nice to see some titles I haven't played yet due to the fear of the language barrier. Thank you for the work you do, and I hope you have a great rest of YOUR day!
The Goonies was my top game on the Play Choice 10 machine as a kid and I figured I just never could find it for rent anywhere until I read about it years later on "the internet". It's easily an above average game for early in NES life.
A NES version of Splatterhouse was totally new to me. I didn't think Nintendo would let that name near their console let alone a full game lol. Thank you for the videos, love having them on in the background while I work!
0:32 Come back, cake! Come baaaack! Fun fact! Arumana no Kiseki is a spin-off of the Konami arcade game Roc 'n Rope, which takes its play mechanics and expands on them, in the same way as NES titles like Gyruss and Mighty Bomb Jack.
The Iris Missions rom hack of this game has a level navigated via numerous elevators marked with letters. Enter the elevators marked as ERICC!! and you get all the weapons :)
I didn't know that The Goonies and Battle City weren't released in America. Those two were among my favorites when I was a kid, I have very fond memories of them. By the way, in Battle City you start from the bottom, not from the top, and the enemy has no base, only you have it and losing it means an instant game over.
I had a Chinese multigame cartridge (100 games in 1) and I'm still finding out to this day that many games I used to play when I was a child (and my sister since she was the one who got the NES in 1990) were only released in Japan and/or Europe and not in America (I lived in Venezuela so everything we got was from the US)
That HI NO TORI game was the first FAMICLONE game i ever played, the game is good, great music, never could understand the main sprite btw, also, until today, i never managed to get the last part of the mural , the head of the phoenix or something, so i never finished it, and sadly, the cart is long game, and it is such a sad story, my mother, God bless her soul, gave away all my famicom games to some random kids when i left home and the whole country, came back after 7 years to pick up my stuff to see my famicom, japanes megadrive and all the games gone, that was like 20 years ago and i am still so salty about it.
Precisely I was rewatching your lists, mainly the RPGs in Japan videos, so I'm very happy that you made another video like this Btw, I had no idea that Battle City was a Famicom only game, I played it so much as a kid, but never knew that
some great picks! definitely dug most of the konami ones on this list, especially the likes of gradius 2! definitely have to sit down and beat the wai wai world games one of these days, too. also I believe the mechanic in arumana no kiseki is lifted from the arcade classic roc-n-rope? interesting they turned that into a whole adventure game!
Great video as usual! One note, the rail shooter Falsion is pronounced "Fa-ru-shi-o-n" according to the kana. It appears to be a phonetic adaptation of the word falchion (fal-shun), like the category of medieval French swords. Similar to how “Gradius” is an adaptation of the Latin word for “sword’, gladius, though the games appear to be unrelated aside from both being Konami shooters.
GOONIES 1 wasnt just in Play Choice 10's in the US. I first played it in as "VS THE GOONIES".. As it was part of the Nintendo VS. Arcade Series (Castlevania also got the VS. treatment). I used to walk or bike miles as a kid just to play it, as it was super rare and only one obscure convenience store had it
07:54 Nazo no Murasame Jou AKA The Mysterious Murasme Castle was actually a featured sound effect called "Ninja Attack!" in Super Mario Maker 2 for the Nintendo Switch.
if you ever do one of these for the mega drive, be sure to include dyna brothers 1 and 2, real hidden gems. Dyna Brothers 2 is even included on the mega drive mini for japan region
Yes, PCE version is nearly arcade-perfect, but the Famicom port is also pretty good. It is hard, but not as hard as the arcade original, and I dare to even say that it's easier than the first Gradius on NES due to up to four equippable Options and the Spread Bomb power-up.
Oh hey, there’s _The Mysterious Murasame Castle_ at 7:54 that got its own attraction, titled _Takamaru's Ninja Castle_ in _Nintendo Land_ for the Wii U. Neat.
I just loooooove playing Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti on my PS4 via the Namco Arcade Archives collection. Other games in this list I would like to see ported to a modern console or PC for sure are Gradius 2, Layla and Wai Wai World. :D
Another info on Battle City: Much like Excite Bike, it has a map creator where you can create your own map. We used to as kids protect our eagle with steel and never lose.
Kids just CANNOT get enough of those ENGLISH-FRIENDLY Famicom games!!
Battle City was huge in Russia, and I mean HUUUUGE, definitely one of the most famous games in 90's Russia and other post-Soviet countries, almost everyone had it on Chinese multicarts, along with SMB and other zero-mapper games.
Same for South American countries like Argentina. An absolute Chinese 100 in 1 bootleg classic. Lots of fun back in the famiclone days. Cheers!
It's looking like that's the tool that Putin used to train his troops, that would explain why they're being obliterated in actual combat...
This game was simply called Tanks in my country.
Everyone with a famiclone knows battle city.
@Ryan del Rosario I'm going there soon. Are the NES games Famicom there?
Splatterhouse was officially translated recently for one of those Namco collections on switch.
Good to know. I guess at some point (if not done already) the rom will be dumped.
I hate that version due to the overlay, which cannot be turned off, taking up a portion of the screen in full mode
@@marbles8641
I wonder if it's true for the PS4 version as well, dang it and I've already bought that.
Murasame also got a us release on the 3ds virtual console.
@@MiriOhki was it translated?
Battle City was really famous on the Indian NES back in the day. Really fun 2-person game

I feel like we're at the end of a Konami concert, and we're all shouting "One more! One More!..."
This was before Konami got fat and started doing experimental solo albums nobody wanted. "I call this Metal Gear... Survive!" (loud, angry boos)
Good reminder of how prolific they were during the 8-bit era.

New title: English friendly Konami Famicom Games
Precisely I was rewatching your lists, mainly the RPGs in Japan videos, so I'm very happy that you made another video like this
Btw, I had no idea that Battle City was a Famicom only game, I played it so much as a kid, but never knew that
Played the goonies play choice a few times. It would've been cool if wai wai world was released here.
THAT would be a good call
Thanks for the vid. These are some cool games 👍
So many great imports! A lot of classics on the import scene. If you haven't checked it out yet, I highly recommend Cosmo Police: Galivan.
some great picks! definitely dug most of the konami ones on this list, especially the likes of gradius 2! definitely have to sit down and beat the wai wai world games one of these days, too. also I believe the mechanic in arumana no kiseki is lifted from the arcade classic roc-n-rope? interesting they turned that into a whole adventure game!
Speaking of which, one of the playable fighters in Gradius Gaiden is called Falchion Beta, but it's unknown if it's related to Falsion (probably not).
Kaiketsu looks a good game
Because it is! I remember seeing this one as a Mario bootleg on my neighbour's Mario bootleg multicart (yes, that infamous one with 7 Grand Dad!).
Great video! Check out the arcade game Roc 'N Rope by Konami and you'll see where they got the grappling mechanics for Arumana No Kiseki.
I believe NES Goonies wasn't released in Europe. The MSX version was, though. Great video, as always 👍
The grappling hook in that last game reminds of Roc N' Rope.
Gradius 2 looks insane! I beat the PC Engine CD version last year and I can't believe how close they got.
Yes, PCE version is nearly arcade-perfect, but the Famicom port is also pretty good. It is hard, but not as hard as the arcade original, and I dare to even say that it's easier than the first Gradius on NES due to up to four equippable Options and the Spread Bomb power-up.
new SNES drunk video...
**drops everything I'm doing**
*Mornin', y'all!*
These games look like a blast.
Oh hey, there’s _The Mysterious Murasame Castle_ at 7:54 that got its own attraction, titled _Takamaru's Ninja Castle_ in _Nintendo Land_ for the Wii U. Neat.
Battle City is also an unlockable bonus game in the JP version of Star Fox Assault.
I just loooooove playing Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti on my PS4 via the Namco Arcade Archives collection. Other games in this list I would like to see ported to a modern console or PC for sure are Gradius 2, Layla and Wai Wai World. :D
