- The Department of Public Works unveiled a new mural painted across the walls of its main office in July. The mural was designed and completed by local artist Tammy Hinkle and youth from the James River Juvenile Detention Center.
The mural is a "full coverage" piece, meaning every inch of the designated walls is painted to show familiar Public Works iconography, like road signs, excavators and a flowing stream. Hinkle and her collaborators worked for 300 hours across 52 days, during which the youth were taught painting techniques and introduced to the staff of the Public Works department.
A collaboration with county leadership, the project gave the young men a chance to learn new skills and discuss potential careers and other topics with Hinkle and county employees.
"I hope you take this with you, that you can do anything you set your minds to," said Terrell Hughes, director of Public Works. "There's really no limit to what you can accomplish."
Hinkle has led similar projects that have produced murals at Henrico County's Administration Building ( • Community Service Art ... ) and General District Court ( • Local Artist and Youth... ).
