The “Two Space Battleship YAMATO” concert was originally scheduled for April 29, 2020 (Wednesday, national holiday), but was postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic, and the first concert was held on February 23, 2023 (Thursday, national holiday) at Across Fukuoka Symphony Hall (The Kyushu Symphony Orchestra). This was followed by a concert on March 12 (Sunday) at Arcrea Himeji Grand Hall (Japan Century Symphony Orchestra), and the latter concert was held on November 5 (Sunday) at Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall (Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra). A live recording of the concert, which was held both during the day and at night, is finally being released to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Yamato's birth.
The pieces performed were Hiroshi Miyagawa's “Space Battleship YAMATO - Suite for Orchestra” and Kentaro Haneda's “Grand Symphony YAMATO”. The performance was conducted by Hiroshi Miyagawa's son, Akira Miyagawa, with his granddaughter, Chiko Miyagawa on piano, and a splendid lineup of guests (NHK Symphony Orchestra Special Concert Master Fuminori Shinozaki on violin, Japan's leading Mezzo-soprano Michiko Hayashi, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra), and the passion and romance of the music were superb. The performance was full of passion and romance.
"Space Battleship YAMATO” is a 26-episode animated television series that aired from October 6, 1974 to March 30, 1975. The film “Space Battleship YAMATO”, a re-edited version of the TV series, was released in August 1977 and was a big hit. The BGM was rearranged into an orchestral arrangement, recorded in stereo, and released as “Symphonic Suite: Space Battleship YAMATO”. Later, Miyagawa himself carefully selected pieces from the original recording and compiled them into a suite for concerts (only “Great Love” is from the movie “FAREWELL TO SPACE BATTLE SHIP YAMATO IN THE NAME OF LOVE”). "Iskandall” was not included in the suite, but since the autograph score was found, it was specially performed in this concert.
The world premiere of “Grand Symphony YAMATO” was held on May 4, 1984, about a year after the release of the theater version of Final Yamato”, at U-PORT Tokyo Post Office Life Insurance Hall in Gotanda, Tokyo. The work was composed by Kentaro Haneda as a four-movement symphony using Yamato motifs such as “Space Battleship YAMATO,” “The Infinite Universe,” “Iskandall,” “Great Love,” “The Exiting Yamato,” “The Temple of the Gods,” and “FIGHT Cosmo Tiger II. A demo sound source was produced by CMI, and completed on April 20, 1984.
The special bonus tracks include the encore performance of “Scarlet Scarf” and “Across the Beautiful Ocean” (arranged by Akira Miyagawa) performed by Akira Miyagawa on piano and Fuminori Maro Shinozaki on violin during the talk corner in the first part of the concert. This is a permanent preservation disc for all YAMATO fans.

この「交響曲 宇宙戦艦ヤマト」を聴きたくて、オペラシティに出かけました。
第四楽章をどのように締めくくるか。それが最大の関心事。思わず心の中でガッツポーズ、の演奏でした❤
高3の小遣いで背伸びして、会場で聴きました。最後まさかのオプショナルバージョンで主題の3音が飛んできて、胸を撃ち抜かれました。
かっちりとしすぎた演奏会でないからこその温かい、熱い演奏でとても良かったです…
これ去年のコンサートのでしたら観客席で見てました!
羽田健太郎さんが亡くなられて１７年経つんですね。このハネケンさん唯一の交響曲がほぼ同時期に下野竜也さん指揮の東京交響楽団盤も出ていて聴き比べも楽しみです
