I don't know how all police officers don't have this. The horrible things they see that human beings do to each other and knowing their life is on the line every time they put on that uniform. My prayers are with them all, every day.
I was raised by two police officers. My parents were divorced by the time I was 3, both with El Paso PD for over a decade before my birth. They always taught me the same thing this officer wanted to teach his kid- take only the best parts of them, leave the bad and the mediocre all behind. And they just trusted me to make that distinction I guess. I love them more than they could ever know, and I don’t hold a single grudge for the mistakes they made while I was growing up.At the end of the day I’m at peace, because I know that no matter hard the journey was, I never went a single day without knowing for a fact that I was loved. I only wish I could give them the same peace of mind about our relationship that I have.
I suffered with post traumatic stress disorder for many years. For me the worse part of it was being woken up from a deep sleep by the tremors. I would sit bolt upright in bed where I would be gasping for air and I thought I was going to choke. I had to quickly calm myself down and reassure myself that everything is ok. It got to a point where I was concerned about going to sleep or having a nap during the day because I didn’t know when these frightening attacks would occur. I was put on anxiety medication for a while and I was taught mindfulness by a therapist where you train your thought on that one particular task, it can be as simple as focusing on taking a shower or cleaning your teeth to getting dressed each morning and by doing that your mind isn’t jumping from one intrusive thought to the next, this technique helped me a lot and I now use this method to stay focused . I came off the medication about eight months ago, I was gradually taken off it under a doctors care and I am now free from the nightly tremors and sweating and that horrible feeling like I was going to choke to death. There is help and recovery for it and it doesn’t mean being on anxiety medication for the rest of your life either.
I feel so bad for the things police officers are forced to go through, it's crazy too see them be criticized so much when they are the ones making split Second Decisions that they or other people or loved ones could have a life altering side affects
It makes me angry how people think cops are these robotic, stoic people who have no soul but these men and women have feelings just like the rest of us and we need to make sure they are always taken care of.
It is nice to see some humanity in a Police Officer. Police are the reason I have PTSD. Hopefully one day we can make a truce and stop hurting each other.
Go get help and make sure you have short term and long term disability. I got sick and went through living hell trying to get any type of benefits. Fuck the stigma, get the help you need. Hope all is well.
My husband and i watch alot of real.crime investigations shows and we always say how memtally strong women and men working on these cases must be. We hopes they deal with whatever issues might arise from it too.

Daily journaling and exercise are great ways to cope with ptsd.
