Mastikator Well yeah, it's kinda difficult to figure out as a male audience member if you're meant to be an ally, an oppresser, a poor idiot who needs help or what in these sort of talks. It's a bloody pain as someone on the recieving end of one of these talks when you just want someone to tell you how you're meant to help rather than all the ways you're not helping or why you should.
To me gender equality is not about politics, nature, or differences in gender. It's about not limiting yourself because of what your gender is.

I don't think you don't know what GENDER EQUALITY MEANS it means that women can be smarter and men is physically stronger but women is actaully weaker the reason why we respect to women and girls is that we're equal but men decide to not hurt girls and women because we have big respect to them usually girls and women can't be taller but men decide to be equal with them.

This very statement, and the negative context in which it was delivered, is why I have such a huge problem with a lot of Progressive rhetoric and their obsession with gender (and race) politics.
What I derived from Mr. Kimmel's remark is that he felt ashamed for simply looking at himself as a person, and that he knew that he 'should' feel shame among his peers for daring to see himself merely as what he is, and that is because, increasingly, Progressives insist that we see each other in terms of demographics and not in terms of our humanity. They don't believe that this is true about themselves, and they are blinded by their sense of moral authority, but this is plainly visible to those outside the bubble.
So what if that Black woman--who, it seems, was educated and among her well-to-do peers--looked in the mirror and said she sees a Black woman? That's HER fucking problem, that's nobody else's problem. SHE is the one that has made it an issue for herself, in her own life. If she sees her Blackness before her HUMAN-ness, that is a psychological and emotional issue that only SHE can solve for herself. There is no legislation, there is no protest, there is no TED talk that will shift her perception until SHE decides to shift it.
I'm Black; my grandmother bought a house out in Northern California back in the late 1960's. She dealt with far more overt racism than her daughter, my mother did. My mother recognized in her early 20's that bitching about hardships won't solve them, and that it was on HER to do the best she could, regardless of what bullshit she might face for being a Black woman. And now I and my brother exist in a world rife with successful Blacks, successful women, and we're both artists that thrive in communities filled with people from all different walks of life. We recognize that we are in a time of ABUNDANCE.
I'm so fucking tired of all this Leftist rhetoric--which I used to buy into, because the entertainment industry is super-saturated with Liberal and Progressive thinkers--that wants to paint the hardworking, over-achieving, awesome HUMANS that I know as victimized, oppressed demographics.
Maybe if we weren't ashamed of viewing ourselves as humans, we could begin to work toward an age where we didn't have to be bombarded by what feels like an endless stream of TED Talks focused on how women just can't help themselves.
Lectures such as these are insulting to men like myself that collaborate with, befriend, and love incredible women on a constant basis, without bias. They're also insulting to women like my mother and grandmother, who navigated the treacheries of life without feeling sorry for themselves and blaming everyone else for their fucking problems.
Serriously, why are some people so obsessed with noticing how the world works as shameful?

His point was that everyone *should* see themeslves as merely human, but that it's hard to do so when you're oppressed on the basis of some arbitrary feature . Overall I think this video is trash, but I will agree that people who are oppressed on the basis of their race or gender will be more aware of their race or gender. Now, whether or not and to what degree such oppression exists is a different question...
+Also Known As, It's illustrating the effect that society has on one's own self image. The message is that we are blind to issues because they aren't directly (though not indirectly) effecting us. If we want to understand ourselves more then we need to understand how other people look at themselves and how that's different to this generic person shape that privileged people see.

As for me, I'm white, sure, but that's about as far as I get there. I'm trans, pansexual, atheist and female. I don't get to look at myself and just see a person, I don't have that privilege, because the other things that I am are the things that define me to other people. When people find out I'm trans, in particular, that becomes my defining characteristic. I'm no longer a person, I'm not even white, atheist or female, I'm just trans.
There are people who you have met, I guarantee it, whether they've made such things known to you or not, who see you as black, not a person, not as anything else, but as black. Society defines us by the things that make us different from the "normal" and the "normal" in America is a white, cisgender, heterosexual Christian male.
Its not about what we define ourselves as, its about what society lets us define ourselves as.

I don't understand how people are missing the message of this talk; it's about gender equality for both sexes, not females exclusively. I assume people have just applied their own narrative before listening to the whole talk. I will also note that it's based off of an accomplished sociologist on the topic, and how it reflects on the happiness of society.

For example he said that when men share housework of women, then their children perform better (assuming there are any) and their wives are more happy. I am quite sure that when you take workload stress off of someone, then it will make it easier for them.
What he never quantified though is that how that helps men who already have their own housework (mowing the lawn, fixing things) and daily work. See basic Economics and Physics teaches that for every gain, there is a cost (Economics) or for every reaction, there is an opposite reaction (Newtons 3rd Law of Motion, Physics). In the same way, it is surely true that women are happier if their man takes some of their work as well but what he excluded was also the findings that since men take more stress onto themselves, they themselves are suffering the negative consequences of it.
And this is an illustration of the crux of his whole speech trough and trough. He was talking about " gender equality " as how it " helps men " by helping women. Yet, you can never help yourself by helping someone else. A person with self-destructive ideas become no less destructive by ignoring the causing conflicts in the first place. If anything, such avoidance only makes it worse.
So too this speech mimics the reasoning of HeForShe which is supposedly gender neutral true equality by making men do things for women, instead of perhaps men doing things for themselves, women doing things for themselves and both men and women doing things for each other. How radical, I know!

Excellent talk. I don't think studies are even necessary to "prove" that relationships with more equal sharing of responsibility are good for the relationship, it's perfectly logical, if one partner is relied on to do the majority of maintenance it could cause stress, exhaustion, and resentment. It's only logical that having all partners working together can help prevent that.
He ridicules his students for thinking women are biased when talking about gender equality, then he goes on to explain all of the ways in which men are biased. Nice double standard.

Just to say: Everyone is biased. Both men and women are biased. If we didn't have biases, we would be bland and without any personalities. It's only a bad thing when you start unjustly treating people differently based on these biases.

Men and women ARE equal in the workplace. Nobody pays women less. It's incredible how many people believe this.

They have different reproductive organs, different hormone levels, different genetic makeup, chromosones, etc. Men tend to be taller and stronger, women tend to live longer. They are susceptible to different illnesses and diseases. If you dig up a skeleton from 1,000 years ago, you can see whether or not it was a man or a woman just by observing the bone structure. Of course societal sterotypes play some part in reinforcing our differences, but there are still fundamental differences based on simple biology that are undeniable. And this is not a bad thing. Yes - we should be treated equally and have equal opportunities - but we are not the same.

I'm pharmacist and I can tell you that in this field in Romania I'm discriminated. For more than 10 years I strugle to get employed, even when I had my own bussiness I suffered the same gender discrimination with the supliers.

I'm a brown man but when I wake up in the morning and look in the mirror, all I see is myself.
I don't think about race every second of my life and even though I have witnessed racism to some extent, I still don't think about race and difference between me and any other person whether they be white, black, brown etc.
The first thing I notice when I wake up in the morning is that my teeth are covered with plaque. Seems like you either need to get a new mirror or get a new perspective on generalizing "POCs" because not everyone falls into your convenient little box.
I also don't see my race in the mirror (I am brown woman) but it is because I live in a country where my race is the majority and considered relatively elite. I can imagine, however, that those who are not elite have to think about that aspect of their identity.

Let me lay some math down here. A and B are different genders. (If you don't know Latin, genus is "type" or "group" and it's where we get "gender" from!)
Now, If A = B, then gender equality is gender equality. But it's also A's equality, and it's B's equality. Because equality belongs equally to both parts.

"But it's also A's equality, and it's B's equality." No. 'A' (or 'B' or what ever other single type or group or whatever) cannot have equality in a system by itself. A AND B have equality. (they are both equally a variable) Masculine and Feminine have equality(they are both equally a gender). However Men and Women are not biologically equal, and this presents a problem in the creation of laws and rights.
Here why this is propaganda, he redefines terms to suit his agenda. In the title "gender Equality -including men" Here's the trick, the femininst defintion of 'equality' does not include men. (just as you definition for equality of 'A' does not include 'B')

I always wonder why equality only seems to be wanted in some jobs. Don't see a lot of push for 50% of construction workers or lawn maintenance or road pavers to be female. It's okay to relegate those jobs to almost exclusively men? Is it okay that women don't want those jobs, but is it then not okay if a husband don't want to be the homemaker? If you want equality then it should be enacted for ALL jobs, not JUST the jobs women pick and choose.

I think it's about where you earn most, and in leading positions you earn more than in this less earning jobs. It's exactly why men are encouraged to take on a more present role in raising the child because of the benefits of a present father, NOT because they will then earn less. I think this is a societal issue where those jobs are unattractive because they don't pay much. Just as low paying social jobs aren't appreciated, like caretakers or cashiers, which are predominantly women. You also don't see men encouraging themselves or other people encouraging them to go into these jobs, because it just doesn't earn much. Both of these kinds of jobs not paid enough and appreciated.

I don't live in the USA, but I think this talk is amazing. In Russia there are plenty of jobs that are closed for women culturally. You can't be a pilot of a civil plane, some people still have huge prejudices about women being programmers, bus drivers, businesswomen. When you try to engage in conversation with this type of people, they say "Who then is going to raise children?". Bravo.

Well, in a way they are being entitled by definition, heh. Entitlement and welfare are taboo terms for some people, but I, and many who view the world similarly enough, do not see them as such. A question: If ALL companies only hired men in positions that females could equally produce in, do you think women, if proven that they could produce just as well, deserve a chance to fill those positions at the same rate that men do? Now, I understand that's an extreme case ("ALL companies"), but the idea is even if there's a small amount of bias that leads to even 10,000 jobs to be lost to men when they could been done just as well by women, can you not see it as important enough to try to even out?
I don't agree that there's some kind of huge conspiracy on women or anything, but I do understand a bit about human psychology and perception (I'm studying it in college currently) and how inherent biases may change our behavior and what (or who) we'd want to invest in (what perceived "chances" we'd want to take and how we measure the chances in the first place).
I know that some basic cultural differences between men and women lead men toward certain positions and women in others, and some men and women don't seem to mind that difference, but it seems to me that the issue comes about when a woman wants a job where men predominantly work and the person who does the hiring chooses not to hire the woman solely based off of this observation or one like it.
Women being in the armed forces might be a reasonable example. Originally men solely dominated the field with women as only nurses and the like, but over time (after the Women's Armed Services Integration Act of 1948) women have proven to be just as effective in many ways. If the reason they only approach about 15% of the total armed forces is due to innate, physical characteristics, then so be it; there is no systematic discrimination. What I mean is, if there are physical tests that simply cannot be passed by some women (and definitely men don't pass everything either), then they shouldn't be forced into the armed forces just to equalize the genders. Arguments over lowering test standards exist, but there is an obvious cost as the armed forces' standards will be lowered, and thus efficiency may be lowered, which may not be a good thing, heh. It is up to the people who make those metrics to find out what their standards are and adhere to those for good reason.
But, in many jobs, physical standards simply aren't a matter of concern. At that point, it seems to me, the populations should approach what they actually reflect, not skewed in the direction of males OR females.
In psychological experiments that want to be generalized to the real world, we'd control for inherent variables in participants that may confound our data by, for example, ensuring a similar ratio of men to women in the random sample that is similar to that of the population of interest. I see a similar idea when it comes to "equalizing" the job market to some degree; maybe recognizing that, if there are actually 40% of females who are educated for a given position yet in reality only about 15% exist as hired in that position, how would it hurt anyone so much to try to specifically hire some more females in that position if the position was limited due to unwarranted bias?
However, you do allude to a great point: If a person, whatever gender, does not produce at their job, they should not have to keep them. I completely agree, heh. But, if time and time again a given gender has not proved to be worse off at a job, why allow for any bias against them?

Equality as an ethical imperative is not debated by anyone... the only difference is whether there should be equality of outcome or equality of opportunity.
In terms of the anecdote related about the white man's misconception about the fact that the black woman took his job really just got a job, it didn't belong to him, and I would posit that he would say that the woman got the job because of merit. This is true. But I wonder if the tables had been turned and the white man did get the job if Kimmel would be willing to admit that it was the man's merit and therefore earned. Considering that the primary tools for analysis seem to be Critical Theory, and lack of definition of terms (primarily equality and ethical), I posit that he'd say that it was unearned because the person getting the job is white and male.
I agree. Where a quota is instituted there is always the possibility that the person chosen to fill it may or may not be qualified as someone who was rejected because of it.
He makes a good sell. I agree with gender equality and legitimate feminist issues. That said, legitimate men's rights issues are real.

I believe in gender equality when it is truly equal. By that I mean looking at the facts, for example, during promotions employers must look at the qualifications and not be swayed either way by gender or race. The person more qualified gets the job. I say this because of what I've experienced. I'm not saying a "woman took my job". What I am saying is that my organization has a 3 tier testing procedure and the results are available to all who tested. On all three of the tests I scored higher, one in particular a considerable amount. I was passed over and she was chosen. If she would've tested higher, then bravo, I would've been pleased to see the better human get the job. To me gender equality is important in every facet of life, both physically and mentally. I myself work with some of the greatest women I've ever known, some are my supervisors. These women are strong, smart and capable, more so than many of my male counterparts.

Egalitarianism is more akin to true gender neutral equality wheres Feminism is more about helping women. That by definition can not be equality as equality as an abstract concept is necessarily absolute and universal. Thus bias (focus) can not exist by principle.
You want to focus on yourself (by extension of women)? Fine. No problem. But then do not claim to be doing anything but that when it clearly is not.
Carol Danvers Thing is, I am not even an MRA. I used to be a Feminist but then decided to go rogue and only represent myself and my values. See though, that things are complex and anything that is complex can not be explained in a simplistic (simple) way. It takes time and a lot of examples to showcase nuance. Not only that but as a future therapist, I have to understand what matters and troubles different individuals and demographics. It is part of my profession to do so.

Why was that?
Because the only men and women who are truly equal, are the ones who do their thing without bitching and whining about it like feminists (male or female) do. Feminists and other SJW's are always trying to 1up each other. They're awful people to listen to or, god forbid, try to reason with.

Will Ganness I didn't put the burden of proof on you- you put it on yourself. You cannot just look at statistics, and mindlessly yell "LIES!" and expect people to take you seriously. I agree that the 77c thing is thrown around, but in many cases, people are talking about wanting to know why women go in to certain fields, and whether they are being discouraged from going into higher paying fields. I know a lot of women who felt they were discouraged from enter science fields by professors, mentors, advisers etc. Surely that is something worth looking into?
Whether the bias is conscious or unconscious, it appears to be there. Studies have shown that college advisers do make suggestions based on appearance, whether it be due to race, age, gender, that is something that should be addressed. I know the Asian students I was tutoring told me that the advisers were always trying to put them into math classes. Stereotypes do effect people's judgments of each other, and we should be aware of how that might effect our treatment of others.

Well, that might have something to do with the fact that every discussion on sexual assault, rape and harassment devolves into a bunch of men telling women that they should get self-defense training. *Of course* some women are going to feel like they have the right to hit- we're being told from all sides that that's the only way we can expect to be protected.
Please provide evidence for your unfounded claim that women lie about rape more than 2% of the time.
Also provide evidence for men being raped more than women. Are you just guessing at the prison rape numbers, or do you have a solid source for that? Are you including only the estimate of prison rapes of males, or are you including female prisoners?
We are in 2016 and we still can't assume our mistakes and work together for gender equality. I'm a man and I want the best for every man and woman, not justified sexism.
