  • Today I am saving a run on a game very dear to me, that is Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari, a little gem of a game on Famicom. Think of Yakuza, only that's in 8 bit. This little game has a lot of charm. Historically speaking, both Europe and USA had their translation of the game. However, this localization changed several key points. Just as an example, Tecmo mascotte Kunio kun, the eponymous young hot blooded bozosoku that stars in this title (and many other as well) had his name and identity changed.
The game is a family-friendly and goofy double dragon, with an rpg twitst to it. Defeating enemies will net money, that can be spent on food to increase your characteristics. The players can roam the city freely, and they are tasked to defeat all the leaders of the enemy gangs before entering the high school and fight the last boss.
All in all it's a simple game, but it's still crispy and clean on the joypad.
Today I am showing you FANS rom hack of this game, version 1.2.
    From Romhacking.com description:
" This patch will restore the japanese version of River City Ransom, called Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari, using the plot, names and graphics of japanese game, replacing several sprites, managing to restore Japanese graphics to the characters. RCR names were replaced with DNM names (Alex to Kunio, Ryan to Riki…) and all the text were adapted, using the official script of PS4/Switch official translation. The title screen will remains the same, It’s a mess and almost impossible to change it only editing sprites. Also, ArcSys still uses River City in the new games, so there’s nothing wrong with that."
You can find this hack, which is in my opinion the best translation we have of this game in its 8 bit incarnation, on this link:

As usual, this one (as all my playthroughs) use NO savestates. In my opinion, playing this way gives a footage more attuned to game and level design than save-state-fuelled runs. When i feel like editing videos, i'll do a review, not a playthrough.
Original cartrige shown on video. Rom loaded in a Krzysiocart on Famicom , with Retrotink2x and Avermedia Live Mini. Played on CRT with the original Famicom controller.
