I think video, I will talk about how Japanese people reacted Netflix's Death Note (2017). Since they don't have an entry on film review sites, I use Twitter as my source of reviews.
Not suprised Japanese didn't like it. Most Americans who saw it didn't like it either
You can't really condensed such a great story into one film. Could have been a successful two to three part trilogy with depth, better writing and better actors.

Actually those are things that are very typical and intentional in american movies, mostly popcorn movies. Myself being from the U.S always hate it. It is probably why i prefer the more brainy american productions.

As an American fan, I tried to be as optimistic as I could with this movie. But I couldn't.
There were a few things that I could say that were good.
1) William Dafoe did play Ryuk very well.
2) I liked how the actor for L did try to play L. Emphasis on "try"
3) At least the deaths had a bit of variety besides heart attacks.
4) There's a more effort done to this movie if you compare it to Dragonball Evolution
What really pissed me off was the scene where L was about to write Light's name on a page of the notebook. Seriously?!?!?!? No!!! How did he know about the notebook in the first place?
And about emotional L? It's like they took Mello's emotions and gave it to L.

fatalshot009 I agree with you, mate. But there's 1 tiny thing that I don't like for this adaptation of Ryuk. He wasn't neutral & tried to push Light to use Death Note. In the original, he dropped his Death Note & when he met Light, he only explain what the notebook is for, not pushing Light to write. Ryuk is supposed to be neutral & lay his hands off human conflicts, because if not, he could die.
Hollywood sometimes takes inspiration from anime and uses it well to make something great, but that has to come from the writer's own heart. When it's executives or whatever saying "adapt this" it will always go wrong I think. But at the end of the day it doesn't matter, there's probably more amazing anime out there than I can watch in my whole life, we don't need Hollywood for anything.
He mainly did heart attacks because he wanted the world to know there was a supernatural force behind something as stupid as "100 heart attacks in a week". Also, if he did non heart attacks too many times, the police could catch on that "Kira can do more than heart attacks". Naomi figured it out with just the bus jacker and almost finished the whole series by volume 2

Strawberry Kiys Yea, he did know about the notebook, I think the problem was actually that L even thought about using it. It was just an extention at how much his emotions took over, normal L would never consider it.
On the other hand, I think that tje actor did the best someone could do with what he was given.

The only similarity between "killer" and キラ is what they said in the Anime aswell (I think?), a rough katakana-transcription from killer.
Exactly, but in the Netflix movie, Light pulls up a dictionary that says Kira means Killer, whem it's just a Japanese Pronunciation, not a translation.

I hear this all the time "You can't have brainy things in Hollywood, people don't like it". And after every flop over and over again, I always say to myself, well, that was a missed opportunity and another one and another.... and so on. We saw this too with the GITS adaptation. The original was "too deep" for hollywood so they striped it all out to make a dumb down action flick... which flopped.
Even Star Wars got slack because there was political intrigue in The Phantom Menace, instead of the traditional "Republic = Good / Empire = Evil". Some bad acting aside, I found it to be quite enjoyable, especially when you consider how George Lucas indirectly criticised the huge power and influence private companies can attain under the capitalist model; gods forbid if anyone criticises capitalism in the US.
SebSenseGreen it is the belief that you have to make a film with the lowest common denominator. Basic tropes that can theoretically appeal to the most people. Brainy or stories with a lot of thought is believe to fly over the general audience's head. This death note was not made for fans it was mostly made for folks that don't know death note because they are a much bigger demographic. Unfortunately they could have done both but they always assume the American audience is too stupid and just want non stop violence.
GITS turned very good though. It flopped because "whitewashing". Almost all Japanese liked the movie
GiTS is anything but good. The closest thing for GiTS adaptation got from Hollywood was The Matrix because the director was a huge fan of it. The Matrix heavily inspired by GiTS.
If the Hollywood version of GiTS is nowhere close to the level of The Matrix in terms of rich lore and psychological aspect then it's simply not a good movie.
The problem isn't that Hollywood doesn't "get it", the problem is they give these projects to mediocre directors who are incapable of doing them justice.
I'm from Australia and I loved the anime and HATED the movie. I turned it off after 30 minutes.

How come you always find so many japanese reviews where the reviewer basically praise a film because an actor is attractive or "cute"?
It's so strange because if you reviewed something in the west and gave praise purely because of the attractiveness of a character you would be ridiculed for not focusing on more important aspects like storytelling, character development and acting skills.
Interesting to see the Japanese point of view , it seems that everybody share quite the same opinion , in France people thought the same about it
Give it to Christopher Nolan, he's probably the only one who'd know how to make a great Death Note movie.

When i first saw the trailer, i thought that they are making a Netflix TV series, so that hooked up some of my interest.
But when i found out it was a movie (and only 1 movie), i just think: this is gonna be a screw-up.
I'd like Guillermo del Toro.
The best thing about the original story, that was captured really well in both the anime and Japanese drama versions of Death Note, was the intelligent and tense back and forth between Light and L. The Netflix version completely failed to capture this. That's why I didn't like it.
I was so willing to give it a chance, it's a great story. I liked the anime despite not really being a fan of anime. I don't care that it was American, I don't care about the lack of Japanese actors.... it simply lacked the depth and quality that made the original and other remakes so watchable. Maybe they could have done a better job with a series? (if I was going to attempt to defend it)
But, it's exactly the kind of entertainment we've come to expect from Hollywood to be honest. Requires very little thought.

the thing about "kira" and "killer" is half true, it is indeed something people came up with, so light did not choose the name himself, but he does say (the first time he sees the word kira on a website), that it probably originated from the word killer
I thought the Anime said that Kira is just the English word Killer just pronounced how you would in Japan. So that wouldn't even make it half Japanese, just straight up English.
oh no no it is actually Kira and not Killer, otherwise they would have kept the word killer itself since there are other english words correctly featured and not "japanized" (just like the words "death note" for example), but there is no doubt that the word was created from the english term killer
reason why i believe ohba wanted to use kira instead of killer is because it sounds more like a name to reffer to! sounds not as stupid and confusing in the dialogue

I know it's Kira - that's what he's called the ENTIRE show. But I thought KIRA is the Katakana for the English word KILLER. In japanese they have other words for 'killer' so it's totally English. Also, the term Death Note is in there because the book was written in English as one of the most common languages, so it makes no difference to what people in Japan would've called him.

I tend to agree. They shouldn't have tried to recreate the story between Light and L, it just didn't seem to work in the movie format. They completely missed all the great brain games between them and turned it into a run and gun. I would have preferred to see a new western style story with the death note concept.
They would've been better off doing a sequel to the original where the Death Note comes to America and do a fresh start.

Yes, I felt the same. It wasn't a psychological thriller, they just made it a high school adventure. That was weird. Too many leaps were made, and i couldn't finish the movie.
I and most Americans felt the same way. Though I do think a lot of the trouble was trying to fit the whole story into a film. A lot of the back and forth between L and Light spanned many episodes of the manga or anime so it's just not possible to put all of that in. maybe it would've been better to make a mini-series or 2 films.

I never watch dubs and watching Death Note with subs when I was younger and in elementary school helped my Japanese a lot. Because I actually did pass my A-levels with only the knowledge I had gained from anime at that point.

Actually, in the original anime version, they DO mention that 'Kira' resembles the English word 'killer', and that's how the nickname was given to Light.

Funny, in the anime they did say he was called Kira because it sounds like the English word word "killer" when spoken by Japanese people, at least in the subtitles I saw. Yuta, you make an effort to distinguish your R and L, but how common is that among Japanese people?
I myself don't hear it often, since Japanese doesn't use those vocal sounds, but rather a sound, or "letter", that combines the two. I mean, り from ありがと could be spelled either Ri or Li in English.

Netflix's Death Note was absolute garbage. Honestly, if anything gets remade in America, chances are it's going to be trash. Another recent example would be, "Ghost in the Shell."

i agree with almost everything that's been said. personally, what struck me the most is how they mixed and matched too many genres. Death Note is a dramatic story, yet the way it's presented, it almost feels like they wanted it to be a comedy. that's my biggest gripe, considering i'm okay with putting the original story and characters aside. if it had been portrayed better, i would've been left with a much better appreciation.
If you were to write "killer" (as an english word) in katakana (japanese writing system), would it not be "kira"?
What I'm still failing to comprehend is how a man exploded by getting hit by a truck moving at a slow speed...
About that original story idea: I totally agree 100%. Woulda been cool if the story takes place years after Light's eventual demise. Ryuk got bored again and decided to drop the Death Note in America, and have another person pick it up and claim that he will do better than Light. Because I actually DID like the idea that this character (I can't call him Light for the life of me. Maybe LINO, as in Light In Name Only) has a much more personal motive than Light in the anime: LINO's mom died because some prick murdered her, but because of that man's connections, he was pardoned. So he actually have some sense of validity as to why he wants to kill. I also liked how LINO is a little more unhinged. It was cool. Then by some miracle he actually turns out to be witty. Maybe like Mello. Then maybe have Near catch this guy, and LINO can be Mello-like. Be more personal. Or maybe another detective to catch him. But Ryuk as its anime counterpart: that means no intervention or influence; just observing and watching as he would naturally do.
TLDR: have Netflix Death Note take place years after Kira's death, with an original character vowing to be better than Light and have Near catch him, with Ryuk as himself from the anime version.

This would have been 100 times better if, like someone said, all names where completely different and at the end Ryuk said "the japanese kid was a lot more interesting". It would at least have partially redeemed the movie.

I do believe as well that they should have changed the names of the characters in order to not have to follow the manga too strictly. It would've been a nice spin to have and R and an American Mark then the latter finding out about Light Yagami from Japan and deciding to call himself Kira as a copycat killer!!...that would've allowed for so much freedom being two different characters and everyone wouldn't have had such high expectations from them

The Japanese live action movies are the best by far. Characters were portrayed right and looked the part, story was pretty accurate, and it was definitely enjoyable. The Netflix movie was just.
I like your idea of using the Death Note concept and creating a new story with new characters around it. I will say that while the plot did seem simplified, I enjoyed Willem DaFoe voicing the demon and the guy playing Light made him feel more relatable.
Demon? Uh...You have seen Death Note before right? He`s a shinigami a death god. Sorry if I came off as a bit eh rude or so but that tiny mistake just got to me a bit I understand is a small mix up. But yeah there are no demons in Death Note.

Yeah, I feel it falls apart because Light Turner and Light Yagami are two VERY different characters. I understand changing things for an adaptation, but I feel they probably either needed to hew closer to the source material or move farther away, maybe even just taking the concept of the book itself and giving it to new characters who use it to a different means.
The central theme of Justice and Martyrdom get so muddied because Light Turner uses that for a secondary motive for the killings when he first uses the note so much as he uses it for petty revenge and impressing Mia.
there's a lot of small things all over the place, but I feel like even if you're someone who isn't familiar with the source material, this goes for being a big, dumb thriller about a unlikable teenager, rather than enthralling the viewer with Light Yagami's charisma and solid belief that he's certainly taken the correct path to passing Kira's judgement.
I tried seeing the movie as something that was inspired by Death Note rather than something that tries to follow it. However because I've seen the anime first, it was hard to keep that mentality throughout the movie. Even with that, I just saw the movie as a Final Destination with a death notebook.
It's better to think of this movie as being "inspired" by the anime/manga and not "based on", movies inspired by stories, books, or even true events can get away with changing things up and making it their own, when ever you see "based on" you tend to think it's for the most part close to the source material.
Just wondering, when you learned English, did you base your pronunciation and spelling/grammar on British or American English? Is your choice of dialect the same as how all Japanese students are taught in school?

I agree with Yuta. Given the time constraints, there was more potential in making a new DN film story using the DN concept. What if the DN simply fell in America instead of Japan w/ different characters? Lots of potential for enterprise intrigue and corruption, but not capatalised on.
This movie is a bit more fun if you think of it as a sequel to the original Death Note. Ryuk is so desperate to relieve his boredom now that he's had a taste of fun that he goes around the world searching for Lights to relive his glory years. (This Light even has eyes for a girl named Mia. Close enough.) Ryuk, being Ryuk, tries out different Death Notes with different rules and pretends that giving it to a human carrier is his job. It would require a ret-con that Light Yagami didn't get as far in his plan as he originally did, but hey if Buffy can do it, so can Death Note.
It could have been salvagable if this movie picked up where the series left off. Ryuk giving the Death Note to someone else... making cheeky remarks about the previous owner, etc.
This is very similar to what happened when America tried to remake Ghost in the shell with Scarlett Johansson and completely missed the point the best review of that film was “all shell and no ghost” lol.
I agree with the original idea. Like, why not have a death note story in the past? There had been death notes that had in the human world in the past that caused nothing but problems. You can have one land in like the Old West and have someone figure out it was a magic book. Or even eras where reading and writing are a rare skill where the Death Note is only valuable to only people who can read and write.
In an ironic twist, an American playwright, composer and lyricist collaborated on the Death Note musical which opened successfully in Japanese theatres in 2015.
Moral of the story: big budgets and 80's synth soundtracks cannot save an abysmal script. Take a lesson from the musical and stick to the original story!

Any localization from Japan to not just North America but elsewhere gets ruined. For example, Gatchaman became Battle of the Planets and G-Force.
Even when faithfully dubbed by Japanese to whatever other language, the Japanese accent is gone, meaning other languages wouldn't feel the same.

Honestly, I think it was good. The only people who don't like it expected it to be exactly like Death Note. But what's the point? It's the idea behind the story, the theme of Death Note, that it gets across. And I can respect that. It was a good watch. The end (the very end) as a little shaky, but otherwise it was like a grittier Scott Pilgrim.
Even people who never even saw the original Death Note thought the movie sucked. It`s just straight up a piece of garbage that should never have been. What makes it worse is it`s under the title of Death Note sigh. .
"Light said Kira means killer in Japanese, which it doesn't" They also said it means "Light" in Russian. Which it doesn't. WTF they could've at least done a quick google translate to check it...
I haven't watched the death note anime yet so i guess my experience was optimal. Compared to other movies it was posetive atleast even though i thought that it follows american story telling way too closely and brushed over the "everything is for the better" part in the middle.
The whole movie is pretty much "my life is kinda crappy, well heres the thing and what it does", very short "everything is cool, im so empowered" and lastly "oh my, things are crashing down!". And ends with a brief "oh i guess i learned something" moment. Like almost all american movies.
I think i agree that it would be better if they made something new in the setting since it's already established that the death note changes owners very easily. If they weren't going with the Japanese version anyway.

Lights personality in the netflix version is what pissed me off the most.
As an American I could only make it 15 mins into the movie. I realize when people adapt different kinds of entertainment into a live action film things might be tweaked for times sake but, I was immediately turned off by the way they portrayed Ryuk. He never as much influenced anything with just his own opinion so to see him telling Light to write a name in the death note was a big wtf.

Only good thing about the whole film was Ryuk being voice acted by Wilem Defoe. I don't think there could have been anyone better suited for the role.
Yay I've been waiting to hear what Japanese people had to say about the movie. Nice to know they think the same way a lot of the Americans do about the movie.
