@@tiffles699 sexual harassment, especially in trains, is sadly prevalent there. That's why they have women only carts. Fun Fact: If you buy any gadget from Japan that has a camera (smartphones, portable gaming consoles, etc.) you'll notice that there's absolutely no way to turn off the shutter sound. The purpose of this is to prevent perverts from taking upskirt photos. That's how bad the problem is.

@Iris Strings that's fine, and if you so choose to use that privilege that's up to you. The last on the left brings up the "ladies first" complex, which is technically sexism in women's favor. I love hearing the Japanese perspective on these issues that are so divisive in America. Are you implying that people should ignore their conscience/intuition and take orders like a robot, following societys agenda blindly? MY friend, the world is in turmoil because people are so out of tune with their inner being and lack critical thinking skills.
American school systems are conditioning people to be sheep:
      1)truth comes from authority
2)intelligence is the ability to remember and repeat
3)accurate repetition and memory are rewarded
      4)non-compliance is punished

It probably arises from either the females biological inferiority or how men were the workers pre 1955 and were expected to do things for women. Of course a woman can open doors, it's just polite to do it for them. I don't know where your getting your information from but I recommend you stop going there.

There's a great difference between a choice determined by retrograde cultural views and a free choice. I'm sorry to say this, but Eastern Europe isn't exactly an example of civil rights frontier. Following your way of reasoning, every muslim woman wears a hijab out of free will, or women disemployment rates are higher just because they don't "want" to work as much as men. All of this has been proven downright false. Besides, nowadays a single wage is not sufficient at all to fulfill the needs of a family, especially one where there are two or more kids: there's no way on earth a woman would willingly stay at home without working and splitting chores with their partners (exceptions aside).
Your words, by the way, are exactly the same used in a not so distant past by a certain man called Mussolini ("domestic angel" anyone?).

I LOVE the honesty of that woman who says even though it might be inequality, she WANTS to become a housewife and stay home with the kids. And the man who said he'd be fine with his wife working too if they could manage it while having kids. This is the way it should be!! The whole point of feminism was that women would have the choice in the first place. Not that they'd have to work. Personally, I want to focus on raising my kids and caring for my family. I wouldn't want to work again until they were in school and even then, I'd be prefer to do part-time just for extra money to support my family. I'm fine with not making as much $ in my lifetime as my husband as a result. And I think Japanese women are largely practical enough to think the same way. Way to go Japan!

VrahnkenEisenbach I get what you're saying. There's people who go to extremes in the name of feminism, and then there's White Feminism which does not help WoC at all. But I also think Feminism as a concept is simply meant to thrive for an equal society, where men and women don't have to suffer under gender roles. some people take it too far and are too extreme - but you find that in religions too, so I don't think it's necessary to distance yourself from the entire concept instead of those radical groups specifically. In my opinion feminism and having an open mind towards "gender roles" isn't exclusive, or meant to be that way. :)

AliceinJapanaland White Feminism is a term to describe a kind of feminism that concentrates on issues that mainly concern white women in the 1st world, and don't take factors like race for example into consideration, (like, how black women in the US are often treated differently than white women by the police for example) so it's very exclusive. Or they try to apply their feminism to women of colour (WoC), for example by trying to "empower" muslim women bc they are "oppressed" by wearing a headscarf.

I had a female professor that was an outspoken feminist (USA) who married a Japanese man and lived with him in Japan for more than a decade. Most Japanese women were very uncomfortable around her because they found her to be obsessed with issues that the Japanese women actually were not at all concerned with. My professor decided that the reluctance of Japanese women to discuss these topics were proof that Japanese women were being 'held down' by Japanese men. She didn't consider that much of it had to do with her own disconnect about how culture played into it. One day she met another American woman who had been married to a Japanese man for nearly 30 years and she brought up how Japanese women were 'afraid' to talk about their 'oppression'. The older woman just chuckled and said, "You need to stop expecting Japanese women to have American values." The younger woman argued that 'equality' should be a universal agreement. The older woman asked for an example of inequity in American culture, and my professor mentioned not enough women in politics. The older woman asked, "Are you interested in being a politician?" The professor said no, but she felt there were not enough women in politics. The older woman asked, "Do you know a female that tried to get into politics and was denied the opportunity?" My professor said, "No, there aren't enough women in politics because society doesn't encourage women to go into politics." The older woman replied, "It sounds like you are saying that you want other women to do something that you don't want to do. You should try asking Japanese women what they wish they could have that they don't have right now." So my professor posed that question to a lot of women. The number one answer was........'More children'. At the same time she suggested asking women what they want, the older lady suggested that my professor should discuss ways to help women achieve whatever it was they said they wanted. My professor said that one simple approach "Made my head explode, because that's when I realized that my western feminist ideology made me believe I not only knew what was best for all women - everywhere, it gave me a selfish attitude where I felt entitled to tell other women what their values should be. It was a complete 'eye opener'." She's still considers herself a feminist but she respects that feminists should never cross the line into telling others (men or women) what their opinions, values, or beliefs should be. It may not be a complete 'red pill transformation', but I would call it a 'red pill discovery' and that's a good thing.

Wow, Romeo's right, you should post this story on feminist videos. Really hits the nail on the head. Women earn less overall because of the choices they make for themselves about the jobs they would like to do, the hours they would like to work and the ways in which they would like to achieve a work-life balance. By asking for there to be no earnings gap, modern feminism is therefore asking for one of two things: either for men to be stripped of their right to equal pay, or for women to be stripped of their right to make their own decisions. Neither of these is equality. People aren't NPCs you can funnel into 50% of any workplace, we're sentient human beings; if only feminists could see us all as such.

My husband, (japanese), is actually wishing for me to go back to work, for financial reasons and mental care reasons. I’ve always been a working person, but when I got pregnant with our son, it was a high risk pregnancy and I was forced to stop working at only 2 months pregnant. I thought I’d work back few months after my son’s birth but, life happens and our son is a “special need” child so, since Japan isn’t the most developed country when it comes to handicap, I had to take care of him until we finally receive options of special care centers or school. My son is 2 years and a half now, and we just got a place for developmental therapy and finally have a word about possibly starting school next April. So basically I’m working as a care assistant with no salary and 0yen from the government, no help, no family around as well. So yeah, going to work will actually relax me.
So, long story short, the wage gap is pretty spot on, I’ll earn less because I won’t work like another man. Also (the US and EU type of) feminism is not in japan and is not needed.
I have never been discriminated for being a woman. Some silly words from old people sometimes but generation gap is a thing.
The lady who said “liking boys opening the door or acting in a ladies first manner , or expecting to be treated X way because you are a girl is discriminating” is so right!

Thats how the brain of coservative people like you works, interesting don't you? that what conservatives are, a bunch of cowards, scared of people that is different from you, making conspiracy theories against that people, blaming that people from all the problems that happened to you and so.
The world of the future is a globalized world with people of all cultures united and working together, conservative people like you are cancer to this world and need to be exterminated.

"The whole fucking world doesn't buy into your crap"
Only the countries that are extremely conservative which are also shitholes, while more progressives countries are much better.
      "western culture will get destroy"
My god, did you have a life outside of the computer?
" western culture will get destroy" you know, we live in a totally different world from the past, countries are not getting destroyed just because people want to make humanitarian actions helping people who come from countries that are in war caused by the same countries that wants to reject that people, we are not living in the romans or greeks era, but well i don't expect to much from people that watch a lot of shit conspiracy theories about "white genocide" or "evil globalists" fucking freaks.

I guess is because probably a lot of conservatives especially young ones are anti social who have no life outside of the computer, so they are easily manipulable by disgusting men like Alex jones, Trump or hate groups like gamergate or mgtow, the people commenting nationalistic and xenophobic comments in this video are an excellent example.
They have the needed of flood this type of political videos and infest the comment section with cancerous and cringy comments like the top comments, simply pathetic.
Just a tip for you, little conservative bitch that is reading this comment, get the fuck out of reddit, 4chan, youtube or whatever internet page you constantly visit to feel safe spreanding your shitty worldwide views because in real life you won't have the courage to do it probably because you have anti-social or depression issues and get a life.

Also, these people are closer to my philosophy than modern feminism is, I want to be happy, do what I want and avoid people like that. If I do something that people do not think is right, I do not care but I will not victimize myself and I do not care about female representation or issues like that, I am a human being and men and women are human beings and that is what matters to me.

I’ve already watched the video, but that’s the westernized point of view , for them these issues “aren’t”.
We as westerners see them as backward.
In fact in 2010 only 50% of women in Japan had a job, while men 80%.
The nation is still doing fine.
The main problem Japanese society has now a days, and is seen as a problem from both western and eastern point of view , is that the birth rate in Japan is the lowest ever.
And again , the Japanese gvt. Is working on this issue.
Encouraging sexual reproduction between couples , and “no-children tax” (basically the opposite of China , which has overtop birth rate).

Western feminism absolutely degrades and vilifies you for admitting you want an easier daily existence, while every one in the world, regardless of gender, actually wants an easier existence. No one wants to grow their own food, wash clothing by hand, build their own house, or dig their own grave, and we have created societies where we essentially choose the hardships we prefer in favor of having all the hardships of life thrust on us by the simple fact of existence. It is not wrong to want an easier life, that is the desire that creates progress and harmony.

THE-ONE-CROBC-METAL if you feel manipulated, you clearly missed the point of the article, which states that feminism protects the right to choose what you want. As for equal rights of women only? It might have started out that way, but you're blind if you think it's now destructive. We speak out against male stereotypes, as well. What is IS is a movement for the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes. What it SAYS is based on the FEMINISTS, the people supporting it. I admit there are bad apples in the group, but what movement doesn't have those? The feminists that truly follow the meaning such as Emma Watson and Rose McGowan know better than to belittle anyone. Trust me, I also thought feminism was just an aggressive push against men. Then I saw the numbers of women being raped and harrassed. I heard little boys cry over why they can't wear dresses. I heard people laugh at boys who were raped and harrassed. The amount of people I know who were sexually assaulted are too many to count on my hands. And who did I realize were helping them? The therapists and teachers who helped them get through their trauma? They're feminists who chose not to coward under the false label mainstream media has given them.

    • @annemiranda1636

THE-ONE-CROBC-METAL moreover, comparing a MOVEMENT to an advertisement for a product is the bottom line of anti-feminism aka "sexism." That means, women know best how to take care of a child because that's just the world we live in. Doesn't mean women shouldn't work, hell, they can do both if they want. The after-effects of that stuff doesn't just disappear. That's why I think a certain degree of pushback against that narrative is good, especially if women are very unrepresented(like in Japan). Not saying you need to strive for a 50-50 balance, but correcting extreme under-representation of 50% of the population in some countries certainly does more good than harm.

Japan is very good at knowing what is good and bad to imitate. My family immigrated to the US from Vietnam and I grew up in American culture. However, my mother taught me to only emulate the good aspects of American culture (independence, free thinking) and reject the bad (drugs, indecent sexual behavior, etc.)
Japan is a beautiful country and society now. That doesn't mean that there are not problems but Japanese people need to change the society the Japanese way, not by importing foreign ideologies that not only do not work, but are making women and men miserable in the countries it came from. (Note: Ideology is not the same as technology, which Japan did an amazing job in bringing back and perfecting.)
That's why I really enjoyed this video even when you said it didn't go as you planned. It shows that Japanese people do not and need not think like Westerners. The society is slowly changing to make things better for both women and men, but adopting the cancerous feminism of the West definitely will not help.
Thank you for making this video.

unfortunately it comes from one side. A lot of women in the west do not want to be advocated for. We actually want them to stop because they are embarrassing.

Same here! I am also from the west (born in VN but grew up in California) and some of these radical feminists really give women a bad name. Some of that cancerous ideology does exist here, but thankfully that's not the norm.

I absolutely love how calm, polite and level headed they were. Interviews like this conducted in western countries usually quickly turns into obnoxious, loud and in your face rants about everything wrong with society and men. The girl who said that women shouldn't be in a higher position simply because she's a woman is spot on. I also think it's charming that there is a healthy amount of girls there who actually aspire to be housewives and raise a family. People look down on this kind of life but every single or stay at home parent will tell you that it's often twice as hard as working full time. Imo it's a very noble thing to aspire towards as you're raising a child and teaching them good morals and behaviour. I also don't see anything wrong with men who choose to either be a provider or stay at home instead. It's biological that women are more empathetic and generally better at raising children. Please note i said generally, as I know there are many many exceptions to this.
I equally think it's admirable for men to take the position of a provider, working hard to support his family. It's a harmonious and symbiotic relationship. You can reverse the gender roles but regardless both parties are doing an important job. Why the western world needs to take issue with a social structure that has worked for literally thousands of years is beyond me. I'm 100% for equality, but that also means you can't turn around and discriminate against men (something western society does a lot now). The girl who pointed out that the ''ladies first'' thing is infact a form of discrimination in itself was very smart. You can tell she's thought it over ''why would they need to hold a door for me? I can open it'' but she wasn't upset or mad about it. She simply considered that it isn't necessary. However I'll assume that if a foreigner DID hold a door for her, she wouldn't become enraged and get mad at them. She would probably say thank you and go about her business. Why get upset over somebody doing a kind gesture for you?
If what we all ultimately want is equality then shouldn't a man holding a door open for you be the same as if a woman did it? I dunno, I just loved the way everybody in this video behaved. Everyone was rational and normal. Love Japan

It's definitely a cultural thing now, at least in the west, to almost shame women for choosing to stay at home. Every time I tell someone I'm a housewife, it's always, ALWAYS followed with "Oh." and an uncomfortable look away-like they pity me! What they don't know is I suffer from post-concussive syndrome, and while I can work with this, it is extremely difficult due to dizzy spells, the inability to think at times, and seizures. Luckily, I have a husband who makes enough to support us both, and actually offered me the option to stay at home. I wish more people could be as understanding as him (I wish I didn't have to explain every time that I'm broken, and get more looks of pity)

And before anyone says this: I don't qualify for disability-already tried. I mention this because half the time, that's the question I get asked, as if the consensus is I should at least be making some money.

    • @Harkz0r
      @Harkz0r 7 років тому +2

How's about you can just say you're a housewife and people won't need to look away regardless of whatever justification you have for it? I mean for goodness' sake, my mother was a housewife, and I probably wouldn't be the person I am today without all the care and attention she gave me during my early years. Even without children, what if you were to enjoy domesticity for its own sake? Maybe pick up a few hobbies? Is that such a bad thing, really?
It seems incredibly ironic that for a social movement that is purportedly all about 'empowering women' and 'giving them choices', that they're not interested if the choices don't align with their particular agenda. For me, it doesn't even have to be a gendered topic. I've never been one to judge a person's worth solely on the degree to which they contribute to "society" because let's be honest it's not all it's cracked up to be half the time anyway. As long as someone isn't out to gain for themselves directly at the cost of others (especially in an exploitative way) then I don't really care what people do.
You want to be a sporting icon? Sure. You want to be a geologist? Go for it! You want to be a pro gamer? As long as you have a fallback option. To be a writer? I'll secretly envy your dedication! To be a prostitute? If you know what you're getting yourself into in the long term, then it's your choice to make I suppose, though it's a tough one to respect...
I guess I'm just saying that I don't really understand the need to judge the way that other people spend their time. Even as young as in school, people would judge each other. I judge too, it's a human quality, but I'm more preoccupied with the result of a person's actions than the actions themselves. Everyone is different. As long as people are enjoying themselves and not at each other's expense, it's really none of my business what people do. On the contrary, maybe I'll learn something about myself or others from being open to their point of view.
Anyways, don't mind my impromptu ranting. And for what it's worth, I hope you recover or at least manage to get your symptoms under control. I can imagine it's far from pleasant.

yippykiay13 . Those women are incredibly arrogant and on their high horse who give you a judging look. Ignore those idiots if they actually bother you. They amuse me. They are not special and you are not special. We all die eventually and become a corpse. They have no reason to look down on others for their differing choices.
Also I have aspergers and dyspraxia. I find interactions with groups of people hard and I can get overwhelmed by sensory. Being a housewife is perfect for me. Besides people seem to think being a house wife means you do nothing with your life. Lol idiots. It means you can indulge in your hobbies. Try selling some art or books you are writing to help a little with the bills. Doing the chores at home to make sure home is comfortable. Raising the next generation of kids that may change something in the future. Your influence in that child made them who they are.

Wear it as a badge of pride for your life and your husband's ability as a provider. Your family is better for it, and it is truly a modern luxury compared to being a norm 50+ years ago (turns out more government regulation and compliance mandates actually make shit way more expensive, so most families now have to have 2 parents working just to make the bills :( )

I lived in Japan for 8 months and I had the feeling women are respected and happy. One thing I am 100% sure about. Japanese women are happier than European women. They also seemed very open to stop working after carrying/delivering and I can totally relate to that. In Europe kids are droped in establishments from the first years of life, sometimes from the first months. Exactly when they need their mother the most.
I honestly don't think women rights are in anyway a problem in Japan and therefore women don't think of feminism as a need.
If I was to point out a problem in Japan myself as a foreigner, I would point out the loneliness. I personally think loneliness is harder to bare when one livessurrounded by people.

People don't like to hear it, but much of what students are being brainwashed with these days has a basis in Marxist ideology (you see this most strongly in groups such as ANTIFA), whose ultimate goal is to bring down capitalism and install communism.
Millennials have been affected the most because when they were in early schooling these programs were only just starting to be introduced, and they started out mild, and got progressively worse over the decades. Now their garbage is so batshit insane Generation Z sees it and thinks 'you crazy mofos'. But because the people who are now so wrapped up in the ideology literally can't see the world through another lens, and because they have 'progressed' so far down this path, they've lost the ability to introduce others using the same baby steps method, have no arguments to rebuttals being made and their only response is to throw epithets at their opposition, because any opposition feels like it's (something)ist to them but they can't relate why.
All we have to do now is get through a generation or two of these people reaching positions of power and hopefully the GenZers will fix everything again in 15 years. Of course, assuming that society as we know it can even remain around that long.

As an American mom hearing that its acceptable for women to stay home as mothers, wish I would have known this. Would have badgered my husband to move to Japan. If you did this in America you would never hear the end of it. This thinking is not part of western values. Children are put in daycare almost right after their birth in most cases. Very few part time jobs available in the west, mostly full time, without benefits. Most youth in America seem to be raising themselves. The average work week is 60 plus hours. Mostly, both parents work. It is rare in the United States to have extended family around to help, because less and less people are able to retire. Our value system is fend for yourself, babies mostly are raised by a daycare center or a nanny. We are a corporate country, where children seem to be forgotten. Many orphans in the United States go homeless. We are a very monetary culture. Money first always. How wonderful to hear there is still a country in this world which values children and family.

You just need to not care about what other people think about what you do, because then you start valuing their opinion over yours. I've lived in 6 different states(from CA to NC), and different social climates in each. I guess a Midwestern area(Iowa) may be a bit more suited, as they are more family oriented and have a higher rate of SAHM's. Military life accommodates SAHM's and gives them options to work or start their own business. You can always choose your area, or choose to change they way you view your current area. Stigma only really has value if you let others add that negative value to your life.

    • @SavageRodent
      @SavageRodent 5 років тому +3

I don't know where you're getting your information. Majority of people in the US do not work more than 60 plus hours, and it's actually almost half that (35 hours per week). And while Japan still care about children and family, they work on average the most hours in the world. Working overtime has become an issue over there almost to the point where if you don't work overtime, you'll be fired and someone else will take your spot (not to mention the mental and physical illnesses that have been associated with working overtime(which people have died from over working called Karoshi)). You want to talk about America being a corporate country when you don't know what a corporate country is like.

@ Laura Thanks. You seem to be wise to understand all the drawbacks that the equality emphasis on the work market has created for children and families. I come from Sweden. I am surrounded by families in which both parents are fully devoted to work. They strive to compensate through luxory, travels and lifestile, which only a few could afford a generation ago. But no one noticed the costs that affectd the family and the children. The divorce rate is sky high. Adultery is very common. The number of children who report anxiety and depression has reached alarming levels since at least 15 years ago. We need to adjust our shared values towards family and life itself, i.e. to progress backwards as it were.

To be honest, the main thing I want for women, is for them to be safe and respected. I think getting rid of sexual harassment, rape and stalking is maybe more important. I think the womens only sections on trains should be there all day, not just certain times. I'd rather know I'm safe. Which I don't think women fully do, not really anywhere in the world and that's sad. I'd never work night shift unless I had a car, and even then I'd be reluctant to do it. I'd also never walk alone after 7or 8pm no matter where I lived. It makes me sad, but I know too many women who have been hurt. (I live in the UK by the way)

The dude with the white shirt said it. Everyone around the world acknowledges the fact that one reason why the gender pay gap exists is that women are hands-on when raising children and doing chores. But women who work hard get their fair share. I also admire how Japanese people think "women first is about manners". It would be insulting on the men's part if the woman rejects his expression of manners. I appreciate this video.
