    Context: if the Chinese team win this match, they are going to be pitted against the OTHER Chinese team, which would ruin China's plans to get the gold and the silver. The Koreans also want to lose this match for a similar reason, to avoid the other Chinese pair who have already been placed, as they are the toughest competition. It was pretty stupid for the tournament organisers to create the situation.

      What I don’t understand is why they don’t limit how many entrants each country is allowed, this year between China, Japan, Korea and Taipei, there were 42 entrants, I know badminton is fairly strong over there, but surely it makes more sense to have a better balance of players, rather than having around a quarter of them from the same countries. It means, given how strong China and Korea are, they’re pretty much always guaranteed medals. Other sports limit the number of entrants from any given country, why isn’t badminton??

    China started this, because in the other groups their teammates suprisingly lost to denmark and ended as runner up. They trying hard to lose in this game to avoid their teamates in semifinal. Korean knew it and did the same thing. Meanwhile, in the other group, Indonesia and Korea didn't want to face this China pair (1st seeded) also play to lose. They all disqualified.

    To give some context, during this years game, the 2nd highest ranked women doubles team had an upset loss. Unfortunately the matchmaking was setup so that whoever ended up winning this match would then have to play against the world No.2 team. Both the Chinese and Korean coaches realized that they would have a better change of making Olympic silver or gold by purposefully losing this game so that they told their players to purposefully throw the game leading to this demonstration of the pinnacle of badminton skills. After this year, the badminton matchmaking rules were changed so that losing a match would never give teams advantages again.

    You can’t really blame these two teams. Both were specifically ordered by their coaches to play as they did, which is evident, given the coaches’ false coaching tips during intervals. However, this it the olympics, and EVERYTHING happens for a reason. So, why did the coaches want their teams to lose. Honestly, I don’t know about Korea, but if the Chinese team had won, they would be forced to compete against the other Chinese pair way too soon, which would result in one of the Chinese teams eliminated way too quickly. Obviously the coaches didn’t want that, so if the players lose this round, they won’t have to play against their ‘teammates’ until the finals, so that China could win both a gold and a silver. I respect these coaches for their shrewd way of thinking about the national team, and the players for understanding and listening to their coaches orders. The only problem...well, you watched the video, you know what it is.

    • @yjkuan
      @yjkuan 4 роки тому +4

      Korea didn't really want to win either because if they had won, they would face the other chinese pair which was stronger. So if they win, they face a stronger opponent next round, if they lose, they face a weaker opponent next round. Which way would you choose?

    It's so funny how when they're not being judged, like when they're passing it between rounds, you can see how much control they have over the birdie easily hitting it exactly where it needs to go even with a little flourish. Then the moment it matters they suddenly forget how to play. It amazes me one side didn't just start winning when they realized the other side was doing the same thing.

    • @ludyren2260
      @ludyren2260 Рік тому +3

      It's cuz both teams were trying to purposefully loose. This was because that year the World No.2 badminton team had an upset loss. This meant that whoever won their round robin final match (this match) would end up having to play the world no. 2 team and most likely end up being eliminated. Therefore both teams coaches told them to lose because they would have greater chances of placing olympic silver by playing other teams. After this game, they changed the matchmaking rules so that in later international and olympic games so that losing would never give teams advantages again.

    • @sirflimflam
      @sirflimflam Рік тому +2

      @@ludyren2260 Well yeah I knew why they were both trying to lose, what I was originally saying was it's weird one of them didn't just give up the obvious charade and take the win, when both were threatened with disqualification. It is one thing to not try your hardest to win. That is frowned upon but it is still acceptable. This is purposefully trying to lose. To use football as an analogy, not trying hardest to win would be playing your bench and not running at full speed. Trying to purposefully lose is to try and score own goals. In badminton, purposefully serving into the net is the latter, not the former.

      You don't understand what is happening. Both teams were playing the way that gave them best chances to advance deeper into the tournament. They were trying to win the war, not the fight. "Just not trying" would not have been enough. You have to actively try and lose in this situation.
      Don't hate the players, hate the game (in this case, the group format).
      By the way, in EVERY format, teams might give 80% on one day so they can give 100% on the next. To say it with Sun Tzu "He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight."

    Both teams are trying to lose this game in order to better their chances at getting the gold medal.
    It’s a great ethical question. If your strategy involves intentionally losing, with the ultimate goal of winning the tournament itself, is that a bad thing?

    You're absolutely right, they didn't break *sporting* rules. They broke the most serious unspoken rule of them all, in the eyes of the IOC--that a whole bunch of those seats were given to their big sponsors, and those sponsors got ripped off by the athletes throwing the match. They broke the Olympic money rule.

    This korean team was not very good at trying to lose. If you are going to risk disqualification by trying to lose the match you need to commit. The Chinese team was obviously willing to do more to lose so I don't know why korea continued even after being warned.

      Hello???
      Firstly Korean team didn't know for Chinese team unfair play. So when Korean team knew that, they were so emotional and angry about that so they did the same. But, however after that Korean team just do the fair play with angry emotional. Korean team were just the victim here!!!!!

      Only works if one side trying to lose. When both sides try to lose, you need to try to throw out a point before the opponent does, that's why at one point they keep serving into the net. Because they know if they serve it over, the opponent will try to lose the point.

      because according to the draw, the winner of this group will meet another chinese pair in semi final, this chinese pair is trying to lose this game so they won't mee their teammate in semi final, and then they can secure gold and silver medals for their country
