Her hairstyle is called Odango hairstyle, named after the sweet dumplings Dango. Part of the reason she had these nicknames based on sweet buns is because her character is known to have a bit of a sweet tooth, and they'd sometimes joke about her appetite for sweets. I too have quite a sweet tooth and related to her on this.

When I was about four or five I asked my mom to wake me up for Sailor Moon. So every day she would get me up at 4:00 a.m. all rolled up in my blanket, set me on the couch in front of the TV, I'd watch the episode with stars in my eyes and then crawl back into bed lol. My mom even taped some of the episodes for me lol ✨💖✨.

As a die-hard Sailor Moon fan, I was scared going into this, but this turned out amazingly!! Have you watched Ray Mona’s docuseries where she goes on the hunt to find the Saban Moon pilot?
Her interview with the project leads was super interesting - especially when they talked about what they were "allowed" to do when adapting/script writing because all the property owners thought it needed to be "American" (even Toei I think??) So glad they were wrong... it definitely would have impacted the anime industry in the western world in so many ways (and even western animation...)

The hairstyle is a variation of a traditional Chinese hairstyle that people in Japan call Odango (Odangos are a sweet in the shape of a ball) Shampoo from Ranma Nibunnoichi also wears the same style but her pigtails are to the front covering the ears and the back is worn down, also Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi wears the style without pigtails or loose bits... It's a very popular hairstyle in Asia and in anime. Had you been in Mexico we were shown the whole series with a couple months delay from Japan without censorship on public national TV and they also aired Ranma to a huge success and those bits with nudity for comedy in the original Dragon ball also aired openly in TV without no one protesting, Karens didn't exist in Mexico then unlike the States where they seem to be the natural inhabitants of the land... XDDDD
This wig is the cutest wig I've ever seen (and Jaymes has made so many cute ones)! I hope you'll make an anime-wig recreation series. Like Utena, Sailormoon, Shihiro from Spirited Away, Card Captor Sakura etc.

Oh, the hours spent visiting fansites over dialup to download gorgeous artwork of the Sailor Scouts. Memories! And gurl, you hit on every one of my 90s anime obsessions! Sailor Moon, Tenchi Muyo, Ranma 1/2, if we went to high school together we would have been total besties!
Sailor Moon was my jam back in the day. I remember watching it in that, "gotta get home quick" time slot too. The wig is really nice; the buns came out great.
(Also, I love anytime people remember Reboot! Loved that show.)

In Canada we had all those TV shows on YTV growing up, fun fact Reboot was Canadian made and the first 3D animation piece of media.
The main thing I remember from the terrible English changes they made to Sailor Moon was making Uranus and Neptune "cousins" instead of lesbians but didn't cut out all the akward hand holding and lesbian scenes. So instead of just showing some lessies on a TV show they turned them into incestuous cousins which was way way way more confusing as a kid.
Sailor Moon is an entirely different show with the original Japanense language and subtitles.
the way I always describe sailor Moon is "Wonder Woman but she's a teenage girl and has a talking cat like Sabrina the teenage witch"
My cousins and I would always play Sailor Moon as kids. We would run around their farm and fight evil people and “look pretty”.
I don’t remember how I started watching it, but I did use to wake up SUPER early, because we had an early bedtime and so early mornings were the only time I was awake by myself. So I wonder if I saw it then? I don’t remember.

I hate that they De-queered the Original DIC version, Making Neptune and Uranus "Cousins", Making Zoisite Female, not airing/dubbing The final Season because of the Sailor Starlights.
Lucky with Sailor Moon Crystal they changed the stuff back, and the Original Series got a new Dub, again changing things back to normal.

My cousin and I started watching Sailor Moon when it was syndicated, and we became obsessed. The show was cancelled halfway through the second season, but we needed more. We found a local Japanese video store that had tons of Japanese television shows, taped on regular VHS tapes straight off the TV, commercials and everything, including Sailor Moon. That's how we saw Sailor Moon S, SS, and Stars. We couldn't understand what was being said, but it was fun. ... Eventually my cousin got the internet, and that led us to fan subs. It's amazing how so much more accessible stuff is now. We really had to dig for it back then. 😆

Her Hairstyle is supposed to imitate a rabbit. Because she's from the moon and according to Japanese folklore, there's a rabbit on the moon pounding Mochi (a japanese dessert). Her name literally means "Rabbit of the moon" Tsukino Usagi. A lot got lost in translation.
I knew it was a reference to the Moon Rabbit but I had know idea her name translated to that. I love that. Now I'm kinda curious what references, if any, the other Scouts have.

All of the other senshi's surname are after their powers Ami Mizuno (of Water), Rei Hino (of Fire), Makoto Kino (of wood), Minako Aino (of Love). Minako's kanji can also be read as Binasu, which is is the japanese pronunciation of Venus. The outer senshi also have symbolic surnames: Setsuna Meioh (of the Dark), Haruka Tenoh (of the Sky), Michiru Kaioh (of the Sea)

The Odango are made by twisting and wrapping the hair until it makes the dumpling shape, and pinning it. Shampoo had a similar steam bun style hairdo only no pigtails.
Being a teenager when this went live was fun, because my hair was near floor length, so I was able to do this style(as well as Shampoo's hair) and then shellac my hair with platinum blonde hairspray for Usagi at the conventions. So much fun!

Sailor Moon fans are a lovely group of people. I for one found a lot of comfort in Sailor Jupiter. Like Miz Jupiter I was very tall for my age, loved to cook, and most people thought I was mean/aloof because I was very quiet and did not talk much. It was so wonderful to see my self reflected in that character.

This came out really cute, and I loved hearing you talk about what drew you to Sailor Moon! This show was the sole reason I used to catch the bus that usually just barely got me to school on time, instead of the one that'd give me an extra half an hour to hang out with friends. For all the issues with the DiC dub cutting out the queerness, it's also hilarious and hugely nostalgic.
Confession time: when the show first aired, there was no way I could look up lyrics, so I was absolutely sure that the opening theme went "secret powers are sewn into her". I did think it was a weird line, but I figured it was about her transformation - like, as her costume magically appears, I guess you could say she's being sewn into it, and maybe power is being sewn into her at the same time? Tbh I still kinda prefer that interpretation to the actual lyrics 😅

OMG I was gonna leave a comment stating just that which is I remember I had to dead ass get up at 5am to get ready to watch Sailor Moon back in 1995-1997 hahaha🤦🤣 My family didn't bother to get cable til around 2000 but by then I was already 11 and had moved onto to newer shows like Even Stevens was a huge favorite of mine to watch. Anyhow Sailor Moon still is a huge nostalgia love for me and Sailor Moon is my number 1 favorite & number 2 favorite is Jupiter😍 I even had owned the Sailor doll's and during my 2nd grade year for a entire week I wore sailor dress that had Sailor Moon pictured in the front for the love of everything my mom couldn't get it off me I refuse hahaha!!! Now at 33 I look at these youngsters their so damn spoiled everything is automatic for them and they will never know the struggle of having to get up way too dang early just to watch a cartoon and god forbid if you didn't have cable instead had regular tv like I did yeah you only got 2hours of cartoon on WB during the week and then you had Saturday moring cartoon's... Welp Sunday you had cartoon's as well but your only choices were to watch the cartoons on PBS & the gospel network or Spanish network if you spoke Spanish of course...
