This scene reminds me why I love Puccini's operas so much. Many great composers could have written an aria as beautiful as Musetta's Waltz, but how many could construct an entire scene like this one? I wonder about one thing, however. This scene usually takes place in an outdoor cafe (forget the fact that moments ago they were all freezing); so how does the parade which concludes he act fit in?
The café is brought on set in two halves after the markets are taken off. Then for the parade, the café is split in half again to change the setting and the parade comes down the centre of the stage towards the audience. The set design is phenomenal
So when is the royal opera gonna start a streaming service?!? Vienna and the Met have one. I want the vast catalogue of televised performances from Covent Garden available at my fingertips. Including rare televised performances which weren’t released on dvd. As well as back catalogue of radio broadcast. The BBC must have archived most Of them.
I also think that their operas would be watched a ton more if they had a streaming service. After going through all that effort of making a production and recording it I think it is a waste not to release it in some form. I love the Met Opera's on demand service. The catalogue is extraordinary, very well organized and goes back decades, they have so many productions to choose from and sometimes interesting bonus features and the price is ok. I prefer this by a length to cinema broadcasts. For the cinema broadcasts I have to drive quite far sometimes, they often use the smallest, simplest auditoriums for these kinds of shows, not the nice big screens that are used for big box office movies and sometimes also silly hours like Sunday at 3pm. For the price of one cinema ticket I can get a month worth of Met subscription, I don't have anybody sitting next to me stuffing their face with crisps or fiddling with their phone and I can be spontaneous with the programme, enjoy the music much deeper, replay certain things as often as I like. I also like having my favourites as blurays, but many productions are never released on disc, although they were recorded. I never understand it, maybe legal issues?
Erica Alberini - I watched the revival of this production via live streaming last Wednesday 29th January - at my local cinema. and the singer who was supposed to be Musetta was ill. This mean't we were treated to Simona Mihai as Musetta - and what a treat it was!!! If anything, the revival was even better than this: Musetta was even more coquettish and (IMO) threw her knickers at Marcello with more gusto and humour than is seen here: and Marcello's feelings of tortured love are stronger. If you haven't yet seen this production I urge you to - it is being screened again soon all over the world as an encore.
Good grief. I wonder what was going through the creative team's minds when they came up with this. Why is she: 1. Standing on the table 2. Taking her underwear off 3. Throwing it around? I honestly don't know what's worse: this or Space Boheme (yes, really) which portrays Musetta's character as a stripper. Also, if they're in an indoor restaurant, how are they going to do the parade which allows them to escape Alcindoro? Clearly did not think this through.

I've heard more than once of opera singers preferring to do concert performances because then they don't get directors with weird ideas, they can just sing and act. I've seen concert performances that were engaging, comic or tragic as needed, no need for directors. And I've seen opera productions where the directing was so terrible, it clashed with the opera, distracted from it, even impeded the singers' ability to sing. Directors sometimes forget the opera is the main thing, and what they need to do is just wrap it up nicely so it's presented to advantage. The opera is the chocolate, they're the box. Instead they start thinking they're movie directors, they have an "artistic vision" to present. Nope, that's not we care about.
Verismo opera, yes. But verismo does not equal vulgar staging. I'm not sure - although I'm no French historian - that removing clothes at a public cafe would be treated so lightly. a bit much for my taste.
Sometimes directors will stage something shocking to modern sensibilities to evoke the effect that "historically accurate" scandal would have provoked in the scene. Especially when the historic scandal is not even worth mentioning in these days when anything goes.
I'm all for modernisation and updating the setting (Baz Luhrmann's production set in the 1950s, for instance, is phenomenal) but there are limits and going to the extreme. Throwing your underwear around isn't funny in the slightest.
Did not have time this morning to finish my tirade anout this production. Who would have ever thought during this exquisite work they would be witness to knicker throwing and crude graffiti such as we were subjected to. Vulgar and crass. Profound apologies Sig. Puccini.
김범석 Very 😢 but true my friend. The only up & coming Soprano I listen to is Soprano SAIOA HERNANDEZ 👑 I'm sure you will like her incredible TRUE CHEST VOICE. She has a very diverse repertoire FROM NORMA TO GILDA IN RIGOLETTO. TRAVIATA, NABUCCO, TOSCA,AIDA,MACBETH, ANDREA CHENIER,BALO EN MASCARA, GIOCONDA. IL TROVATORE. Il Pirata. This Opera Season she will be in LA SCALA , ARENA DE VERONA,COVENT GARDEN. Her great stage presence is very well pronounced in all her performances. I'm sure you will not be disappointed. She was mentored by Montserrat Caballe and Renata Scotto. Caballe said that once she heard her sing during a VOICE Opera competition. La Superba said that she is The Voice of the millennium. Take care my friend and let us know what you think of Madame Hernandez. 🌏🌍🌎🎶🎻🎼🎹 👱👴 MUSIC WITHOUT BOUNDARIES. Arnold Bourbon Amaral

Probably worst production I have ever seen. Ugly crude and utterly offensive to the eye. Had to close my eyes and just listen. Glad I only paid cinema prices. Some poor souls paid ROH prices to see this travesty of a beautiful opera.
When Aida Garifullina became ill I cancelled my plan to go to the cinema and after seeing this I am glad I didn't go. I don't like the singing, at least here, and also the production/ directing look pretty boring and tasteless.
A woman with a 55-year-old voice should not play this role. This is a character voice. no a prima or seconda donna voice. Some good musicianship, but the voice is just too worn.

I love how chaotic the scene becomes - when Musetta has her shoe taken off. It just summarises her character so well.
Extraordinaire! Quelle cantatrice! Bravo!
Mariusz Kwiecien (Marcello) is so hilarious in this scene 😂😂😂
I have this DVD at home and I really love this production and cast.
One of my favorite parts of this is the fact that Marcello is getting a kick out of Musetta's antics towards the end.
Bellissimo! Infiniti pollici sù! Grazie di averlo messo in You-Tube

Her acting is so uncomfy I have to assume it was the directors fault
Yep, directors come up with these things. They should be made to do it themselves first.
