- Ermonela Jaho as Cio-Cio San (with Elizabeth DeShong as Suzuki) performs Un bel dí vedremo in Madama Butterfly. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk/
Giacomo Puccini was entranced by David Belasco’s play Madame Butterfly (based on a popular short story by John Luther Long) when he saw it in London in 1900. He collaborated with librettists Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa (with whom he had created La bohème and Tosca) to adapt Cio-Cio-San’s (Butterfly’s) tragic tale for the operatic stage. Although the premiere at La Scala, Milan, in 1904 was poorly received, that same year Puccini revised and restaged the opera for performances in Brescia, to great acclaim. Madama Butterfly quickly became a hugely popular opera with performers and audiences alike, and remains one of Puccini’s best-loved works.
Puccini drew on Japanese folk melodies for the score, one of his most evocative and atmospheric. In Act I, Cio-Cio-San expresses her radiant happiness in ‘Ancora un passo’, and the lovers rapturously declare their love for each other in the passionate duet ‘Viene la sera… vogliatemi bene’. In Act II, set three years later, the dominant mood is one of yearning; in her Act II aria ‘Un bel dì vedremo’ Cio-Cio-San longs for the ‘fine day’ when her husband will return to her.

So now I understand why people watch opera singers......oh...her expressions made me feel what she feels
you just understand it now? how old are you?
@@elijahsackville-glucksburg what is the connection?
lolol what she feels? we feel money and benefits
I agree. Since covid when I started watching opera on UA-cam I am now hooked
To me it's not so much the words, but the emotions. They can tug at one's heart strings. If one has a partner who enjoys opera also the experience can be life changing. I am a neophyte, but have been captured by it.❤
This is one of the best performances I have ever heard. The emotion is so brilliant. Absolutely beautiful.
My Dad loved this opera so much. Playing it for him in heaven. Hope you like it Dad😢❤
Brava! No matter how many times I hear "Un bel di vedremo", if it's well performed, it always chokes me up. Definitely my favorite aria.
Right? I hear the audio but watching it perform gives me chills. I even teared up in one of the performance I watched.
couldn't agree more
Same here
Sì, è un capolavoro assoluto.
Suzuki's makeup is so snatched like damn girl stab me with those eyebrows 🔥🔥🔥🔥
It is performed in a big opera house so has to be made visible somehow for the whole audience.
OK !!!
Fiercccce💣
She is superlative in this role, what an incredible talent.
I can never hear it without tears.
A masterful performance. The impossibly soft opening was especially breath-taking.
I saw Jahos Butterfly at Covent Garden, this very performance, in 2017, my best evening in an Opera House to date, she pours everything into it and her voice is beautiful, a truly moving spectacle.
An opera about a Japanese lady falling in love with an American IN ITALIAN! What talent! Especially this interpretation!!!
Ermonela Jaho is a fantastic soprano and a very beautiful lady. Fantastic work.
I saw this performance and it took me back to a Saturday afternoon in June 25 yrs ago in Glover garden in Nagasaki and hearing this sung by the winner of the aria competition. It was a moving and emotional experience and one day to hopefully be repeated .
I watched it on Sky Arts tv in bed and lay there sobbing. It was truly wonderful opera and I wish I had been at the ROH to see her live, blew me away.
Seeing Jaho live in this role is shattering!
Trasmette una grandissina emozione. Superlativa.

Wow, the end was flawless!
Don't hold back, let it out honey! She is tremendous! And a true pleasure to watch and listen to.
Why does this piece always put me to tears?
Lauren Ricard listen to the version of Maria Callas one time
ME, TOO💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
It's a sad song. About a widow waiting for her beloved soldier to finally come home to her.
So emotional, you could feel the❤ pain, and that's where the tears😢 come from, even if you don't understand a word❤
Ein Superstar wird sie werden! Einfach wunderbar. Thank you!

Her feelings come alive once again
You make us proud Ermonela!
When I saw this performance in ROH in June 2022 it took me back to 1994 standing Glover Garden Nagasaki listening to this aria looking out over the bay and seeing bots come into port. The ability of music to transport you back in time to and a place.
3:26, perfect move for the end!

Jüngst in Hamburg, Ermonela , mio Dio, fantastic Butterfly and ever, ever Abraccio !!!
This made me cry
Incorporating this song's opening into Sarah Brightman's "It's a Beautiful Day" was genius.
'Song' isn't the term used in opera. This is what's called an aria. In opera you have arias, duets, trios, quartets, quintets etc... choruses and recitative that make up all the different parts of the work.
Opera is actually live theatre set entirely to music to intensify the emotions experienced by the audience as they watch the stage play unfold.
It's an art form created by the Italians, who were inspired by the histories they read of how the ancient Greeks used to incorporate music into their stage plays for dramatic effect, so a whole terminology grew out of opera that is mostly in Italian because that's where opera was born.
It's confusing at first because we're usually used to thinking of music in terms of songs. There's nothing wrong with songs but music isn't limited to songs.
Bravo Ermonela
And everytime I hear this aria, my heart bleeds
(I just heard in La Traviata (Teatro Colón) 2017 you end up crying, clapping, hitting the desk, that voice, and what an actress ...)
Thanks a lot
😍❤️
Exquisite.... simple as that❤
The wonder is how we are so touched when we didn't even understand a word......
Puccini was really a marvel
BRAVA !
I'll see her soon in November 2020..if the Stavros Niarhos institute does not cancel its future performances because of increased cases of covid. I hope that doesn't happen I really wanna see her as Butterfly :')))
👏👏💜Brava.
Best opera I've ever seen...on the TV. Lol.
No that’s easy anyone can do that
Oh, I’m talking about the lady standing still
She is absolutely amazing, where is she from anyone?
She is from Albania!
@@holtaspahiu5361 Her voice is just miraculous.
I totally agree 'good poster ' even to sing that emotion defies feelings
Beautiful. Heartbreaking. Never fails to move me. Jahos is Devine, I prefer to Calais
Niceeee😮😮😮
Wow
Brava indeed!, Bautiful and haunting, Puccini is god
🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹brava🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Soy de Argentina
Un bel dì, vedremo
Levarsi un fil di fumo
Sull'estremo confin del mare
E poi la nave appare
Poi la nave bianca
Entra nel porto
Romba il suo saluto
Vedi? È venuto!
Io non gli scendo incontro. Io no
Mi metto là sul ciglio del colle
E aspetto
E aspetto gran tempo
E non mi pesa
La lunga attesa
E uscito dalla folla cittadina
Un uomo, un picciol punto
S'avvia per la collina
Chi sarà? Chi sarà?
E come sarà giunto
Che dirà? Che dirà?
Chiamerà "Butterfly" dalla lontana
Io senza dar risposta
Me ne starò nascosta
Un po' per celia
E un po' per non morire
Al primo incontro;
Ed egli alquanto in pena
Chiamerà, chiamerà:
"Piccina mogliettina
