I had this problem for years and it drove me crazy. I finally found out that Bar Keeper's Friend powder removes it, but so glad to know that vinegar will do the trick as well! Great video!
This really helps. Every other video has a pristine out of the box pan and teaches you how to clean it with massive fond build up. Nobody addresses the appearance issues that come with long use
I tried this brief remedy, but sorry, it didn't work. But you are right on about the white vinegar!! I did figure out something related THAT ACTUALLY WORKED FOR ME!!!! My situation was that I had an expensive Calaphon stainless steel 3 quart pan that I really liked. I had accidentally left the empty pan on a hot burner and ruined its appearance. There was no burned on food or grease, the pan had been empty. I didn't need a pan that was that expensive, I had bought it because I like how it looked, and now I had ruined it, or so I thought. The outside of the pan had taken on a very dark, golden brown patina that was very even all over the pan. Considering yours and several of the other online videos that also hadn't worked for me, nonetheless it seemed that white vinegar might do something helpful. And white vinegar had been useful for me in other projects, so I tried something a little different on my own. So I took a plastic bowl big enough to immerse the entire ruined pan, and put in an entire gallon of pure white vinegar. I completely submerged my ruined pan, and let it soak for an entire evening. After three hours in pure white vinegar there was NOTICEABLE IMPROVEMENT! I continued to let it soak overnight AND THE DISCOLORATION WAS ENTIRELY GONE!!! I had my pretty pan back! So, this is what has worked for me. I don't know how this would do with burned on food and grease though. You are right with the white vinegar as a remedy, it just took longer for me--- Thank you for the idea!
I'm so glad for your comment! I did the same thing you did, I overheated an empty Calphalon pan and it is discolored inside and out. I'm going to go, right now, and try your method. Thank you! 😊
I can attest to this excellent solution (and using more vinegar, if needed). Sometimes, it takes two rounds. Just used it last night - and every night I use stainless pots and pans. I have also used lemon juice which works like a charm (often at full strength). Perfect timing!
Bar keepers friend takes them right off as well if you don't like the smell of vinegar. This is a great channel, I've learned a lot about stainless steel and other pans here. Keep up the great work !
BTW, rainbow stains often occur after you've used the pot to cook beans. Also (living in Italy, this is what normally happens), the next time you use that pan or pot to cook tomatoes or tomato sauce, the acidity of the tomatoes does the trick.
I gave it a try and it sure works! Thanks! After the first pan I switched the vinegar which has a strong odor to citric acid diluted in water. Just a tip.
Awesome tip thank! My frying pans are only a few months old. The inside would be clean, but develop a milky color that didn't look clean. Your trick brought them back to new in minutes,
I did this on some stainless steel parts that had been heated to red hot for brazing and the vinegar even managed to far reduce the colour-changed steel so that it's only just visible.

Thank you so much for relating your experience. The rubbing vinegar method hasn’t done anything for me either and I will try this now. Thanks so much.

Thank you. This worked very well on our SS flatware, which now looks brand new!

Thank you so much! I just bought my pan and was sad it already had rainbow stains. Your tip worked instantly. Much appreciated!!❤
Happy to help
I gave it a try and it sure works! Thanks! After the first pan I switched the vinegar which has a strong odor to citric acid diluted in water. Just a tip.
This is why i subscribe to this channel! I have some Paul Revere pans that were my mother's, and I love them.
Awesome tip thank! My frying pans are only a few months old. The inside would be clean, but develop a milky color that didn't look clean. Your trick brought them back to new in minutes,
That’s great! Glad it worked 🙂

Nice tip!

I really didn't know about this! Thanks for sharing, so useful :D Following you now :D
Awesome! Thank you!
Cool tip
one of those too good to be true trick that actually works
Do you have to season the pan after?
Is it OK to use a Brillo like SOS pads to clean stainless steel pans?
Would apple cider vinegar work as well?
Is it the vinegar we use in cooking. Plz reply
could this also work with apple cider vinegar?
Would you say the ratio of water:vinegar is particularly important, or you can kind of just "do a splash of both"?
A splash of both is fine. If it doesn’t get everything on the first attempt, use more vinegar and less water next time.
@@PrudentReviews Thank you very much :)
Nice! Now how do I get boiled water residue off my SS pot? 😊
How about baking soda?
can we use apple cider vinegar
Sadly this didn’t work for most od the stains on the sides of my pan 😩 any other tips?
Mine has these little dark specs on them that i can't get off. Hope thus helps
Try Bar Keepers Friend
Is sanitizer work? ^^
Until next time it gets heated up right ?
👍👍👍👍👍
Oh wow i used to think these stains were inevitable due to surface corrosion rather than an additional removable layer. 😂
👍🏻
Didn't work for me.
Didnt work for me😮
it did work but the rainbow stains came back when you boil soups, so you have to use vinegar again and again.
Not working
30 mins don’t have changes
Sadly did not work at all.
Not true
great. i miss the clean smooth look of my pan
Thank u so much, very helpful
