Yes 'survival' knives (ie. hard use field knives) still rock!! They really can perform a range of tasks esp. when multi-night hiking & are reliable. This knife is not really my thing, however, I would trust almost any TOPS knife out in the field. I have a TOPS Tex Creek XL in my hard use field rotation and love it - I trust it without a thought. The leather sheath lasted about 3 years of regular use and I have replaced it with kydex. Thanks for the vid (love the backdrop - beautiful country).
Same here, I also use a Tex Creek XL as allround belt knife. Its been with me for 7+ years fishing, camping, bushcrafting...it does everything, even light chopping due to its top-heavy design

So glad to see you liked this one. The Longhorn and the Prather are 2 of my all time favorite fixed blades. They both deserve the better sheaths. For the Longhorn I went with Linos kydex and it’s really nice.
@@sailingradmode9473 they are different but I still have and really like both. The Longhorn has a bit of recurve so if that’s a concern for Sharpening for you, it could be a decision maker. The Prather is lighter and faster in the hand with its skeletonized handle. The Longhorn has a beautiful crowned spine and shadow boxed handles that is both very comfortable and attractive. It’s hard to pick a favorite.
I had this knife in the same blade finish and the Rocky Mountain Tread. I have to say I think this is maybe the sexiest TOPS Knife they make and it is probably the best, most ergonomic handle TOPS makes. Even with the RMT handles, the thickness and depth of the handle design makes it epic.
Aaron, thank you for your review. Your review had put this knife on my radar. I ended up adding this knife to our collection last spring. I am very happy that I did. I have found that the Long Horn Bowie has become one of our go to blades. It is amazingly functional and does all of the tasks that we need from a large knife. I like that the spine is rounded, that allows for being able to use both hands to press down with or draw towards you. I also had to round the sharp edge off where the choil meets the blade. You are absolutely right, the nylon sheath is garbage. I replaced it with a leather sheath. That ran about $100.00 more dollars. The finish on the Long Horn Bowie seems to be more rust prone than other Tops finishes. I like that the 1/4" 1095 blade steel is easy to re-sharpen. In conclusion, the Tops Long Horn Bowie has been a very pleasant surprise in that it is very functional and has become one of our most used knives in the collection. I would highly suggest this blade to anyone who is considering purchasing it. Even though you will need to add another sheath to it. I like that Tops knives are made in the USA and that they are always "Top" quality. That is my two cents! Thank you and God bless.
Check out The Knife Connection Field Buddy line. I have the 6.5 and 5.5 and they are also in CPM3V and remind me of the GSO line. I have a GSO 7/7 that I love and these Field Buddy knives are very similar and are made by TOPS for TKC. But, you will get your Field Buddy in a few days rather than a few months or years. I ordered a GSO-6 in November of 2020 and am still waiting on it.
You are awesome man, probably one of the only tool reviewers I trust. I am sick of watching reviews with people chopping and batonning with knives that aren't meant for those heavy duty tasks. Your reviews are real and your topics stay relevant within the scope of what the tool is meant for. Personally, I hate recurve knives, only because I want something that can be sharpened in a survival situation if you find yourself without proper sharpening gear. Obviously this all comes down to bushcraft skill, but a straight edged flat grind knife will always be the blade for me. For me it boils down to this: Why make your life more difficult than it needs to be, when you already find yourself in a dire situation? A survival knife should be durable and easy to sharpen. Simple as that.

I actually like the sheath. These big knives are a little heavy to put on the belt so I would rather use the Molly to attach it to a vest or a drop down leg rig. Works really great. I have also just put it on a regular belt and slung the belt over my shoulders like crocodile Dundee used to carry his big Bowie knife. As funny as it sounds it works pretty good. Not to mention the little pocket that you can put your work sharp in or pretty much anything you need. Thanks for another great presentation Aaron. I just ordered this knife from DLT and I can't wait to use it. I had many tops knives and I know it's going to be great.
I bought the Longhorn Bowie and it leaves my ESEE 6 in the dust. My LB knife is sexy, balanced, and came wicked factory sharp slicing through a thin paper sheet like a laser beam. The LongHorn Bowie reminds me of my Busse and Swamprat knives in robustness. I was so impressed with my LongHorn Bowie that I sold my ESEE 6. The sheath is functional but it does deserve quality leather sheath.
Tops does such a great job with 1095. The differential heat treating is amazing and the edge geometry is impeccable. I have a Silent Hero that just cuts and cuts. Field dress, cape, and quarter a bull elk, slice up some back strap, chop up some onions...no problem. People ask why I spend $200 on a knife, and it is just hard to explain how much better a Tops will cut than your $60 Gerber. If you're on the fence about investing in a Tops, go for it! Worth every penny! I love Tops and I see a Longhorn Bowie in my future!
It’s good to hear that you like this knife. The Longhorn Bowie is Mumma Bear’s favorite knife. She never goes anywhere without it. I carry (edc) the Prather War Bowie myself. But when I go into the bush anywhere, I’m taking my absolute favorite knife, the TOPS Armageddon 👍🏻👍🏻
Really like your review I really like that knife. Also like the Buck. But I’ve never purchased one because of the stick tang. I think it would be so cool if Buck made the 120 and the 119 in a true full tank
Hi quick question… I’ve had this knife for about a year now …. I have not used for about 8 months . I just broke it out again , and the original finish looks like it’s cracking / flaking off . And the spine around the handle is like rusty brown now . Knife still works great but the original beauty is now gone . Did you experience any problems ??? I really like my own knife and the character that it already is beginning to show . So I think I will do a coating removal on the entire blade now . Let the entire blade form it’s own patina . Great review, thanks Aaron! So, know this is an old thread but am pulling the pin on one of these now at a great price. My question is for those who have one, should I get the standard handle, or the Rocky Mountain Tread "rougher" handle that had grooves cut in it, or does it matter? I have pretty big hands so am looking at the RMT handle, but the specs seem similar. Thanks for your opinions! (FYI, I've seen reviews rating the sheath on this as a B-, so I'll probably have a leather or kydex one made.)
How do you think it compares with the Prather War Bowie? It's something you recommended and I've been loving it so far.. The handle ergos of longhorn look better, but I feel prather will outperform longhorn as a blade.. thoughts?
My Prather war Bowie is one of my favorite knives of all time. And I have a shitload of nice knives. I’d say the longhorn isn’t necessary if you have the Prather.
Mumma Bear has the Longhorn Bowie and loves it. I prefer the Prather War Bowie, and I have two. I find the PWB easier to use, and more comfortable in hand. You have to hold it to understand how good it feels. Very secure, almost second nature, like an extension of your arm. Works well in the kitchen too. I’ve processed wood, chopped vegetables, and scaled fish with it, all in the same day. It’s a fantastic camp knife.

I got one and love it! I got one downfall with this knife! It will rust easy! I had mine 2 months and never used it and it rusted even though I oiled it! I sent it back to TOPS to have it coated in the Black Traction Coating put on it! Other than that, it seems to be great!

Have it since a few years. Had it several times in the field. Still my Nr 1 LARGE field knive when hiking (very heavy). Best for batoning, even falling small trees. Skinning possible (stag and sheep), but not optimal. Self defense perfect. Does not work w ferrow rod. Have bought custom leather sheath. Found it easy to field sharpen w Work Sharp. To sum up: agree 95 per cent as long term user (see weight differently). Still among my all time 3 most loved knives... Maybe because of Bowie style and strength.
I carry my mora garberg at all times along with my edc pocket knife but when I go into the woods or go on a trip 3 days or longer I bring my Becker bk9
G'day Aaron, yep always like a beefy job, especially without carrying a hatchet. Yeah recurves are always a bone of contention, aint scary, but sure, a little more challenging to sharpen. The main thing is to me; not sure they really offer anything extra. I do agree, this one is worthy of better sheath, much the same as a BK-9 or Condor Bushcraft Parang for example; mine are still going strong, but If/when they ever fail, it'll get a Kydex makeover for sure. Leather on the Buck 119, Joker Nomad, Gator premos etc. is better suited to safe campsite belt knives IMO, and still do benefit from a drainage hole I reckon. Oddly enough my Bravo 1.5 sheath doesn't come with one, though I have treated the leather and one could run a 1/4 in. drill bit up it I guess. Anyway, I wouldn't think you'd be disappointed with this knife as a one and done done survival job, thanks for showing it. Cheers Duke.
Agree with the leather sheath thing. I made one for mine in the pattern of the tex creek xl sheath. And another for ranger carry. Nice part is a few knives fit in them. Like the T.O.P.S Mission Team 21.
I argue that the TOPS Camp Creek is the best bang for buck out of their line. Yes, not a survival knife, more of a general camp knife, but S35VN, Kydex sheath, with a leather dangler for $150ish. Win. Longhorn vs ESEE 6??? Opinions?
I would really have enjoyed seeing this compared in performance and features to the Steel Will Chiefton as a competitive option. It’s essentially the same knife in a lot of ways, with a few key nuanced differences.
That's a nice knife. Tops is quality. I don't own any recurves, but I'd buy that knife. For a lack of my ability to describe what I like about clip points, I can say this, "it's really pointy"!! I like that. You always do a great job Aaron, and your wife still reminds me of a young Kirsten Dunst.
Bowie is multi tool of fixed blade. Sure you can buy choppers, Bushcraft or hunting knives but lack multi usages of Bowie's ... just ask any experienced Bowie users. Got Tops Prather War Bowie and it excels in all fields from practical to tactical. Finger chole is not needed nor wanted for well experienced knife users. Good presentation 😎👍
You are absolutely correct. I edc the Prather War Bowie. It’s probably the smallest Bowie I own, but it’s very comfortable in a rear, scout, iwb, 30 degree angle carry. And it never fails to inspire knife-envy whenever I use it. Works well in the kitchen, in the forest, and on the battlefield. 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸

if u were stuck on an island with a single cutting tool and needed to last 7 days what would it be? You have a knifeless rebar so no need for multi tool :)
Pass. I'll take a Mora Kansbol or Terava puuko with a small axe and saw, maybe a multitool. Beside that I want a small axe, saw, pot, and water bottle. No need for new or cool knives survival junk. Folks just need to save their money and just purchase one good solid blade, footwear, and things that really matter. Knives are pretty low on the list of where I'd spend money.
Take a bushman and make a spear. You're wanting to get way to up close and personal for me. Of course a .44 magnum or larger might not be a bad idea either. Of course they might not allow that. Of course I do have a dirk with a 14 inch blade. Not all that great for a lot of things but for killing...It can get to the heart of things even on a bear.
You do know you can go both directions on a sharpening surface, right? You can also do more than one pass on each side before moving to the other side. You’re welcome to finish with away-from-edge, single-pass if you want. But doing so through the entire sharpening is wasting a lot of time.

M390 is great for edge retention and corrosion resistance but if it’s going to be a knife that you are going to be beating on, you might run into some issues. M390 is easily chipped and can be a bear to resharpen. If you need the stainless and still want to beat on it, there are better options like AEB-L or 154cm/cpm154. If you want a tough high end tool steel that doesn’t need to be as corrosion resistant, 3v all day.

@@lukiepookie9262 I personally enjoy 1095 regardless of the poor corrosion resistance. If done properly it is a very tough steel with good edge retention and it is easy to resharpen. I think people tend to hate on it because they may think it’s over used or they are snobs. I’ve never had a bad experience with it though.
Kinda reminds of a finer shaped Karen hood chopper somewhat... Which I do love that knife as well but is more "kukri-esque" where I like the tip of this baby....
Nylon doesn't matter in the slightest, not if it's done well. I have a $325 Chris Reeve Green Beret (Yarborough) and it came with an excellent nylon sheath. TOPS just cheaps out on theirs. I'd toss the one it comes with and either have a kydex one with G-clip or teklok so you could carry it vertical or scout carry, or have a nice leather one made for a bit more. For that matter spec-ops makes a Combat Master utility knife sheath in two sizes out of 1000 denier Cordura nylon that will last longer than the knife it's so tough. Takes knives up to 8" and wider than this, and fits all MOLLE and PALS webbing, so it would do a good job for this blade. You get what you pay for. By the way, get a leather sheath soaked in a stiff rain a few times against a quality nylon one completely submerged in water for hours and see which one holds up longer.

Yes, never thought I would like a bigger knife till I tried a Rat 7. Really changed my mind. Very useful and much easier to use than I thought.
Love tops. Finally got my Survive GSO 6.0 in cpm 3v. Best knife I've ever owned. I'd take that anywhere.

For a larger knife it processes rabbits and squirrels quite well,hacks through bone decently too
Bk 7 would be an obvious contender along with several others over the buck.

So I think I will do a coating removal on the entire blade now .

My question is for those who have one, should I get the standard handle, or the Rocky Mountain Tread "rougher" handle that had grooves cut in it, or does it matter? I have pretty big hands so am looking at the RMT handle, but the specs seem similar. Thanks for your opinions! (FYI, I've seen reviews rating the sheath on this as a B-, so I'll probably have a leather or kydex one made.)

Beautiful knife and that Esee 6 with the contoured handle was nice. I rock an AA Forge bushcrafter, small axe and a folding saw.

I just got it...I like it but 2 things 1 of course the sheath 2nd I wish there was a 90° angle on the back for ferral rod strikes.

The handle ergos of longhorn look better, but I feel prather will outperform longhorn as a blade.. thoughts?
My Prather war Bowie is one of my favorite knives of all time. And I have a shitload of nice knives. I’d say the longhorn isn’t necessary if you have the Prather.
Mumma Bear has the Longhorn Bowie and loves it.
I prefer the Prather War Bowie, and I have two.
I find the PWB easier to use, and more comfortable in hand. You have to hold it to understand how good it feels. Very secure, almost second nature, like an extension of your arm.
Works well in the kitchen too.
I’ve processed wood, chopped vegetables, and scaled fish with it, all in the same day.
It’s a fantastic camp knife.

I got one and love it! I got one downfall with this knife! It will rust easy! I had mine 2 months and never used it and it rusted even though I oiled it! I sent it back to TOPS to have it coated in the Black Traction Coating put on it! Other than that, it seems to be great!

mine rusted, sent it in and it rusted again, i might have to have them do that to mine.
@@fathersonsurvival true! The only river wash coating that I've not had problems with is the Silent Hero! Now the Tex Creek XL rusted on me like the Longhorn! They make good quality knives other than that!

Have it since a few years. Had it several times in the field. Still my Nr 1 LARGE field knive when hiking (very heavy). Best for batoning, even falling small trees. Skinning possible (stag and sheep), but not optimal. Self defense perfect. Does not work w ferrow rod. Have bought custom leather sheath. Found it easy to field sharpen w Work Sharp. To sum up: agree 95 per cent as long term user (see weight differently). Still among my all time 3 most loved knives... Maybe because of Bowie style and strength.
I carry my mora garberg at all times along with my edc pocket knife but when I go into the woods or go on a trip 3 days or longer I bring my Becker bk9

G'day Aaron, yep always like a beefy job, especially without carrying a hatchet. Yeah recurves are always a bone of contention, aint scary, but sure, a little more challenging to sharpen. The main thing is to me; not sure they really offer anything extra.
I do agree, this one is worthy of better sheath, much the same as a BK-9 or Condor Bushcraft Parang for example; mine are still going strong, but If/when they ever fail, it'll get a Kydex makeover for sure.
Leather on the Buck 119, Joker Nomad, Gator premos etc. is better suited to safe campsite belt knives IMO, and still do benefit from a drainage hole I reckon. Oddly enough my Bravo 1.5 sheath doesn't come with one, though I have treated the leather and one could run a 1/4 in. drill bit up it I guess.
Anyway, I wouldn't think you'd be disappointed with this knife as a one and done done survival job, thanks for showing it. Cheers Duke.

Agree with the leather sheath thing. I made one for mine in the pattern of the tex creek xl sheath. And another for ranger carry. Nice part is a few knives fit in them. Like the T.O.P.S Mission Team 21.

I argue that the TOPS Camp Creek is the best bang for buck out of their line. Yes, not a survival knife, more of a general camp knife, but S35VN, Kydex sheath, with a leather dangler for $150ish. Win. Longhorn vs ESEE 6??? Opinions?
I would really have enjoyed seeing this compared in performance and features to the Steel Will Chiefton as a competitive option. It’s essentially the same knife in a lot of ways, with a few key nuanced differences.
That's a nice knife. Tops is quality. I don't own any recurves, but I'd buy that knife. For a lack of my ability to describe what I like about clip points, I can say this, "it's really pointy"!! I like that. You always do a great job Aaron, and your wife still reminds me of a young Kirsten Dunst.
Bowie is multi tool of fixed blade. Sure you can buy choppers, Bushcraft or hunting knives but lack multi usages of Bowie's ... just ask any experienced Bowie users. Got Tops Prather War Bowie and it excels in all fields from practical to tactical. Finger chole is not needed nor wanted for well experienced knife users. Good presentation 😎👍
You are absolutely correct.
I edc the Prather War Bowie. It’s probably the smallest Bowie I own, but it’s very comfortable in a rear, scout, iwb, 30 degree angle carry. And it never fails to inspire knife-envy whenever I use it.
Works well in the kitchen, in the forest, and on the battlefield.

Survival knives will always be a thing. I use kukri for my camping/survival knife but am working on Bowie that has no sheath to make a belt kit.
What do you think of the idea of using a coil (instead of the back of the blade) to strike a ferro rod?
Pass. I'll take a Mora Kansbol or Terava puuko with a small axe and saw, maybe a multitool. Beside that I want a small axe, saw, pot, and water bottle. No need for new or cool knives survival junk. Folks just need to save their money and just purchase one good solid blade, footwear, and things that really matter. Knives are pretty low on the list of where I'd spend money.
On my wish list, though price increased in the mean time.
This is a great knife. It’s probably one of the best survival knives.
Take a bushman and make a spear. You're wanting to get way to up close and personal for me. Of course a .44 magnum or larger might not be a bad idea either. Of course they might not allow that. Of course I do have a dirk with a 14 inch blade. Not all that great for a lot of things but for killing...It can get to the heart of things even on a bear.

You do know you can go both directions on a sharpening surface, right? You can also do more than one pass on each side before moving to the other side. You’re welcome to finish with away-from-edge, single-pass if you want. But doing so through the entire sharpening is wasting a lot of time.

M390 is great for edge retention and corrosion resistance but if it’s going to be a knife that you are going to be beating on, you might run into some issues. M390 is easily chipped and can be a bear to resharpen. If you need the stainless and still want to beat on it, there are better options like AEB-L or 154cm/cpm154. If you want a tough high end tool steel that doesn’t need to be as corrosion resistant, 3v all day.

@@lukiepookie9262 I personally enjoy 1095 regardless of the poor corrosion resistance. If done properly it is a very tough steel with good edge retention and it is easy to resharpen. I think people tend to hate on it because they may think it’s over used or they are snobs. I’ve never had a bad experience with it though.

TOPS makes a good product but if I'm spending $100+ on a knife it's not going to be for one with a nylon sheath.
Nylon doesn't matter in the slightest, not if it's done well. I have a $325 Chris Reeve Green Beret (Yarborough) and it came with an excellent nylon sheath. TOPS just cheaps out on theirs. I'd toss the one it comes with and either have a kydex one with G-clip or teklok so you could carry it vertical or scout carry, or have a nice leather one made for a bit more.
For that matter spec-ops makes a Combat Master utility knife sheath in two sizes out of 1000 denier Cordura nylon that will last longer than the knife it's so tough. Takes knives up to 8" and wider than this, and fits all MOLLE and PALS webbing, so it would do a good job for this blade. You get what you pay for. By the way, get a leather sheath soaked in a stiff rain a few times against a quality nylon one completely submerged in water for hours and see which one holds up longer.
