My adult chorus is singing "Beautiful Dreamer" in an upcoming concert. I threw this out to the group as a movie trivia question tonight and I was the only one in the room who remembered it. Geesh, I felt old. So glad there are others here who loved it as much as I did.
When I first seen this movie as a little boy back in the 1960's and this scene came about, I was floored by this musical scene. This scene brought tears from my eyes for some odd reason. Even today in 2023 when I see this scene, it still brings tears to my eyes.
I, too, like many others tear up when I see this...thanks for posting. One of my favorite songs ....and one of my favorite movies growing up in the 50's and 60's. It was a good time to grow up.
Amazing combination of live filming and stop-motion animation. Among the finest work done by the greatest of them all, Ray Harryhausen who learned his craft from Willis O’Brien , the creator of King Kong and worked with him on this film.
I remember hearing this song when I was a baby and it put me to sleep it was so calming and then when I was older I finally watched the movie that when along with it and it was amazing.I remember just crying at the end but still wanting to watch it again. I haven't seen it in a couple years though
This scene is as awe-inspiring to me now as it was when I first saw it more than fifty years ago -- I want to stand up and applaud -- seriously, who wouldn't have wanted to be in that audience for something like that? Encore!
well, it's Thanksgiving morning and i've been looking all over the net for king kong, son of kong and mighty joe young streaming online. growing up on Long Island in the late 70's and early 80's those three movies have always been a thanksgiving favorite. thanksgiving morning was always the parade and the three giant gorilla movies!!
To this day, I can't hear "Beautiful Dreamer" and not think of this movie. And I still get a little misty eyed thinking of this scene. Great moment from a great film of a bygone era in cinema. And those of us who grew up in the NYC area recall those great Thanksgiving Day afternoons. When WOR-TV, channel 9, would show three classics back to back to back. The REAL King Kong (1933) at noon, Son of Kong at 2pm, and of course Mighty Joe Young at 4pm. Thanks for the post, and the memories.
A childhood favorite of mine this movie is me and my grandfather actually call eachother Joe and Jill because of this movie it will always hold a special place in my heart. Ever since I was two years of age I am 23 now and to this day we still call each other Jill and Joe!,😄♥️
As a boy with an interest in music, I always enjoyed this orchestral arrangement of this great Stephen Foster song. To this day I remember the role of each instrument. I especially like the effective use of the violins and love the trombone counter-melody at the 3:12 mark. One of the favorite films of my youth. Yes, I still watch and enjoy it at every opportunity and know much of the dialogue by heart. Thanks for posting.
People, I think alot of people cry in this scene for some odd reason..I remember seeing this as a little boy back in the mid 1960's and can't believe I cry again when this scene plays again...errr this I think touches the sensitive minds of most.
When I saw this film on Turner Classic Films this past Thursday, the US almost went into default, the stock market lost nearly 1000 points, our economy is in dysfunction, our law making body acts like spoiled children, and 31 soldiers died in a helicopter attack over Afghanistan. Then you watch a scene like this and it reminds you how Hollywood can remind you of just how beautiful the world can really be.
+Phoenix Borealis I hope you do. Too much special effects and really ruin a re-make. BTW - I grew up in the 60's watching this movie. Boy, do I feel old!
I grew up in the 50s and this was a blockbuster at Saturday matinees at the neighborhood movie theater. I've watched it many times on TV since. It's not King Kong, but it's a nice variation on the Beauty and The Beast story.

I was a kid of the 60's and these movies usually came on WOR TV channel nine. The Million Doller Movie had Mighty Joe Young and King Kong on and it played all weel, also Godzilla, the original I watyched them all week. My parents were saints to just sit there and read and allow me to monopolize the only TV. I to this day love this version of Beautiful dreamer with Joe holding up the turntable with Jill playing that gorgeous piano
back in the late 70's to early 80's, channel 9 (in NY/NJ area) used to show this .....EVERY THANKSGIVING and sometimes on Christmas. They used to show this before TOY SOLDIERS and then THE WIZARD OF OZ, they played Wizard of Oz back to back one year. I have a question for all film buffs: ARE ANY OF THOSE CHILDREN STILL ALIVE and DID ANY GO ON TO ACT IN ANYTHING ELSE???
MDM - "If you missed any art of Mighty Joe Young, or wish to see it again, the next showing will be at 11:00". Twice a night on Mon - Fri, three times each on Sat - Sun. Did I watch Joe and Kong sixteen times in a week? HELLYEAH.
Beautiful and Royally staged. Brought a tear to my eye. Touching to see the deep relationship between the two lead players as they soar above the superficial throngs of the nightlife. On another level, the incredible orchestration and arrangement of the song and visuals buttress this theme. This is a profound combination of art, music, and science that shows how utterly BRILLIANT the artistic human mind can be! Unsurpassed! Yes, I am always emotionally moved by this scene due to all of these elements.
Still one of the most amazing movie scenes I have ever seen in a fantasy film and who can argue with Stephen Foster. Great post for younger people who aren't familiar with this style of film production. Just saw the Rock in Rampage and things are so refined with computer animation it almost seems oddly phony compared to this. Granted, it may be nostalgia influencing my perception but this looks cool. Production values are outstanding IMO.
"Joe Mystery" Computer animation is more technological and in certain ways can produce images that look more 'real" but it tends to be overdone and some of the classic or older special effects of the pre 1960s can be amazing to watch.
There's such a magic to this film in all aspects, but the effects especially. Even to this day, it's a mystery to me how they were able to synchronize ol' Joe with the live action actors so well. I guess that's what happens when you have 2 of the greatest minds in the artform (Willis O'Brien and Ray Harryhausen) on the same production.
Back in the 1960s and 1970s in NYC Channel 9 (WOR) presented this movie every few months, usually in the afternoons . It was regular "Old movie fare" that Channel 9 used to show. In the newspaper TV-program guide, the movie would usually be described as a "sentimental yarn" and would be given maybe three stars out of 5. It was not considered a particularly good movie by more-modern standards of some two or three decades later. But now that even more decades have come and gone since it was first made, and there is an odd element of comparison between "Golden age" special effects, and " Computer age" special effects and the internet can present it to younger generations and also bring it back to older generations, one can realize how much this movie was a spectacular part of Hollywood fantasy even though it was to be considered a cheap old movie as time went on.
I think that this is the best of the three classic ape movies. King Kong is too depressing. Also, this had the better of the remakes. There I said it, too bad pete jackson, too bad.
"his life long friend".. well, in the past six months. Denham was always an asshole. Kong, Kongs son, Joe Young..the list goes on. Excellent character though, played by Robert Armstrong here and Jack Black in the recent versions.

This scene is oddly moving. Good movie too, with a fine cast. Loved seeing the great Ben Johnson as a young and handsome guy.

This was certainly one of the highlights of my childhood. I'm only now realizing what incredible cinematography went into this film.
And thanks for using this song in the 1998 Movie with Bill Paxton and Charlize Theron...and the Cameo of Terri Moore and Ray Harryhausen.
When the orchestra kicks in, my goodness, what an amazing score. Composers today need to watch this scene when making movies today.
