You may know the answer to this question, but what's the difference between the black and gold X amps compared to the earlier black and red thunder amps? Especially the 2300 model.
I had a single 15 in a slot 4cuft through a hole in the bed in a reg cab originally intended for 3 10w6s The 2300x was a monster and that setup did a 148db legal and 161db in the slot WITHOUT the big 3... 😁
Dodd Garger I have two working 2300x amps and one under repair. I have five fully functioning 150x’s and that’s the one I wish someone would put on the dyno because that’s a stout little amp. All together I must have close to thirty old MTX amps and the crazy thing is that I’ve never had one in my systems.
I just stumbled upon your show a few nights ago; now every night before i fall asleep i find myself watching your show. some of the amps you dyno i use to own the same models....some years back i had built a 50 speaker sound system in my Chevy Suburban. Over the years i faded away from it and even got rid of all my gear that i kick myself in the ass for....i had 32 amps in my collection back then...now i got this wild tick to build a 28 speaker set-up in the cab of my Chevy pick up...i've gotten back some of my old gear as well as some other gear that i have bought like a Phoenix Gold ZX475ti...your show helps inspire me back into a passion i should have never left in the first place...thank you....love your show BigDWizz
Awesome, I really enjoy seeing these types of comments! I've been making videos about old school car audio on my channel now for over 7 years. It's not the most popular subject, but it's what I'm passionate about. It's cool when it brings back memories for other people who have let the flame subside (it never goes away). Thanks for watching and commenting
I had two off these little beast in use between 2000 to 02 doing DB drags. Each pushing its own Jl 15w3. The .5ohm was very stable on this masterpiece of the cheaters. They would get hot but were extremely tough. I've still got one. Im considering breaking it out of retirement.
Maybe 3rd of the 25x2 cheaters behind the Lanzar 50c and US Amps VLX-50. When you are good (Orion 225 HCCA), everyone is gunning for you and wants to best you...looks like ***** did that with the 225HO!
Dereck BigDWiz My friend. You have a wonderful dyno.. Why don't you put it to use testing more new amps as well.. I understand people complain about this.. But it isn't that easy to get people to volunteer their vintage amp for a torture test....
adam as I get at least 1-2 requests a day to test somebody's amp. That's cool, I understand everyone wants to know how much power their amp makes. I'd be the same way. Truth is, my channel is mainly devoted to OS car audio and I occasionally mix in some newer stuff. There's others with Dyno's that test mostly new stuff including Cody DroppinHz Johnson and Coleman Thedinger. I have a very limited amount of time each week to work with my hobby, so for now until I test all of my amps and the OS ones on my bucket list, most of my tests will be old amps.

MTX is the safest and best performing amp. PERIOD! A few of my friends were running PPI amps and gave me test unit, (fire) Orion amps were highly marketed(another fire). MTX amps are more stable at low Ohms.
I've got the Mtx Thunder 225ho black version, the white 225ho version and the Thunder 3200X. Love those amps. Got 2 new in the box Mtx Thunder 7000's to go with them whenever I do a old school setup.
Love the OS MTX Thunder amps! Thanks for the video. I just dropped my 2150x to 2 ohms (not rated for) on a single 15 OS Rockford HX2 in my bug. Very impressive!

Big d, totally unrelated question. Do you know of anyone who may have knowledge or listings of factory car amps? With the amount produced there has to be some decent ones out there . And with you pull yards and cheap price I was curious about possible system build around them. Just to see what could be thrown together. Thanks.
That is a very nasty amp, I used to have one back in the day. Was constantly pushing the limits of my stock electrical system. It had no problems driving a dead short without catching on fire.
I used to have this amp and had it hooked to two 500 watt mtx 10's for the life of me could not figure out why it pounded them so loud, back then I didn't know shit, now I see why, should have kept it.
Wow, I am constantly blown away by these old school amps. If i only knew what i had back when. Do you have any insight as to whether or not the new mtx amps perform as well, or at least to rated? I know the Rockford amps are pretty solid but I never hear about mtx. Thanks for the great videos big D.
MTX still under rates their amps, especially on the higher end lines, so does Rockford Fosgate, especially with their power series. But keep in mind the entire point of under rating is provide more headroom over what you're gain should be set to. So if you set the gains to a rated 600 watts and it actually does 728 watts. You would have 128 watts of headroom for things like bass boost but really the extra power is pretty much nothing in reality nor would likely perceive a difference than if it just did 600 watts flat. Older amps like these were also often put out a coloured sound. with higher peaks in the lows and highs....as a marketing tool for consumer comparisons with other brands, the peaks stood out more to them. Back in the day it also had something to do with competitions where you would be in say around the 600 watt class but the cheat is that the amp does more?? At least that's the way I understood it. Nowadays all of this is trivial. So long as the amps are 2006 CEA rated, you know it will do at least the rated power displayed. Plus most people don't even set gains correctly or use good wiring anyway, so they either don't get rated output or clip it to death. Buy good amps that come with a birth sheet if you want to see actual outputs at various voltages but really it won't be perceivable by most unless they under rate it by half the power which would then blow subs consumers buy for them making that even more fruitless.
hey Dereck. do you have a manual for a mtx 275x amp or one with the same kinda control settings? I can't find a manual online anywhere. and the amp doesn't have any numbers on it to see where you're setting the eq and hz...thanks man!! David

Josh Ianneillo in the future, this is a possibility, but right now, I have many amps lined up to test. Most are old school plus a couple sent to me by manufacturers.
Dereck BigDWiz Ok No problem. i am just very interested to see he numbers from that amp because i bought and for the money the guts look like they could do it
lol, When you see the dynoruns on smd channel with newer amps some dont hit their rating, or barely. Would this be just a higher power model with a diffrent sticker slapped on it? Or just rated VERY conservative?
Many old school amps were rated at 12 or 12.5V, so their "actual" output in a car would be more as most factory charging systems can provide at least 13.5V (some up to 14.8V). That's the big difference here. There are not many high current 2ch amps still produced today, so it's hard to say how they might rate it.
@@wal It just arrived. I posted a pic in the old school challenge. came in its original box with original birth sheet. In amazing condition. I can't believe the guy took my offer of $150 the first day it was on ebay.
Possibly for the burst test, but not a load I'd use in any daily setup. The 2300 has quite a bit more reserve power and designed for 2 ohms stereo or 4 ohms mono
