Thanks for the enthusiastic comments! My experience w/ MTX started back in 1990 when I bought my first subs, the 10" Blue Thunders. The Road Thunder amps are nice as well as the Blue Thunder ones. These were made back in the day when underrating was a commonplace with the higher end manufacturers.
The later 2300's were in a shell like the 225HO (called 2300x). The Blue Thunder amp was most likely the same or very similar to the Thunder 2300x. I've seen birth sheets showing 900w plus from the 2300's....not quite a HiFonics Zeus VII or VIII, but still impressive
Sorry to dig this one up from the grave, but the later 2300x's and the XW's (white ones), would they have the same internals as this 2300, and put out similar power? Many thanks, love your channels Big D !!
Yes, the sign can be modified, but it's not as easy as just turning it. It will take a little more time than I'm willing to devote right now, but I'll fix it before I mount it in the lab...
Simple estimation - 90A times 12V equals 1080 divided by 70 percent efficiency equates to around 756 watts. This is a Class A/B amp, less efficient than the Class D's
Do you have a video of the 2300x? I just got my 2nd 225ho. And it looks just like the 2300x. The first one i got was bnib so i didnt want to take it apart. When this one arrives i will take it apart.
How many miles per gallon does a truck get? Gotta be more specific,MTX Blue Thunder was a speaker line, not a particular speaker. Not to mention, there were many different models over the years and some models were capable of handling high power. Reply with the model and we'll see what info we can find about it
Great videos! I especially LOVE this one b/c I am an old school MTX nut. I have 6 Road Thunder amps (styled just like the 2300) in use, and 3 that are backups for parts. 3 4 channels, 3 200 watt 2 channels, and 3 600 watt 2 channels. I use them ALL for mids and highs and they never disappoint. ;D I was very curious as well as to if the HO and 2300 would be the same board. I guessed wrong! Keep up the great work and thanks for all you do!!!
Yeah man, great job w/ the packing and I can't believe how fast it got to the east coast from Cali. The amp seems to work great, as you mentioned. I was concerned when I heard the piece rattling inside the amp, but turns out it was nothing serious. Two of the plastic feet broke, but they are a horrible design and they break all the time. I left you positive feedback on CACO, thx again!
I ran a pair of Rockford Fosgate Dvc 12 off a mtx 2300x. That set up was great. Next system was a couple directed electronics mono block amps and 4 jl 12w3s. The 2 Rockfords where much lower bass and way more violent force.
I made a lot of people mad with a 2300x and a single 15 20 years ago Now I have a couple gold letter thunder amps, a 4200x and a 1500dx which is even nastier than the 2300x
Oh yes, oldies but goodies! Gotta love these USA built gems! NOBODY built them as good as we did! I especially like how the old school high current amps start with such little power then end up being beasts when being driven at low ohms.Big D, are these amps made by PPI like the Terminator line? Nice vid by the way.
Ive been looking at a MTX thunder 311d and the guy selling it says it works just fine, but when connected to power there is a red light instead of green or blue. Is that normal?
i have an old school mobile authority amp,, i just says thump! on the front and 1400 watts max, lol i belive it is 10 + years old and the company that made it is no longer in buisness and im not even sure if it works , but seeing you like old school amps are you interested??oh and its got 3, 25 ampp fuses
can you do an over view and test of the XM-1 I have the exact same one and an AMP270 , AMP270X from the same year and I just got an AMP160 ( the White/silver) from the last series the ran before changing the model numbers.
Those old MTX amps were awesome. Thanks for sharing! I have a Thunder 2300 LE and Thunder 4320 LE (yes the limited edition chrome ones). I have video of them in action on my channel.
hey bid D....the 225ho isn't like the 2300x like you stated. the 2300x is slightly like the older 2300 with a fan etc much more power supply caps than the 225ho....can you do a bench test on a 2300x?....please
Christopher Jones I have a 2300x, and was wondering the same after seeing the video of the 2300 being tested by him, and yeah, mine looks like the 225 as far as outside appearance on top, but more controls than both, and internals look like the 2300 with a few more capacitors. it's hard to find these 2300x these days so I doubt someone is gonna send him one.
hey bigdwiz i had a similar amps it was a mixed generation be tween the two in your vid it looked like the 225 ho but it was a blue thunder 2300 and it had the solid power&speaker Allen key terminal's like the 2300 and it was fan cooled as well by the looks of it it was 2300 in a 225 heat sink with small up grade's i had them running 4 15" mtx 8000 black with the flocked mtx logo back in the day
What makes the 2300 so great? Mine's blown but I'm thinking about having it repaired. I just bought a Rockford Fosgate R1200-1D. Can the 2300 beat the 1200 watts RMS (CEA 2006 compliant) that the Fosgate can deliver?
Don't use THD to choose an amp. The THD rating is used to clarify the power rating. All amps have low THD until clipping. This is where they can cheat and give you a power rating at a high THD. For example, an amp that is rated at 30 watts 0.1% THD can be rated at 50 watts with 5% THD. Both figures are true but unless everything is standardized, you can't really compare power ratings unless they give you the THD spec. Make sense?
Don't worry about breaking the seal on the back cause MTX won't honor the warranty. I contacted them with my 2 amps to have them cleaned, repainted, bench tested for a birth sheet and they said (to old we don't stock the parts for them. We cannot accept them. Go to an electronics shop in your area.) Thanks for nothing Jason Weinstein at MTX. MTX oldschool amps are still my favorite.
you can not beat the cheater amps i love the whole concept of understated power, much more satisfaction comes from shocking people with the understated claimed output, you no the people that bought the cheaper toy town bigger power claiming amps lol
hello I wanted to ask if you got some mtx 81000d amp need the componewntes saver that yeva ie codes are split and I do not see anything so I buy saver thanks greetings
ohh man i have no need for this amp,, its just sitting there collecting dust bunnys in the corner,,ill make a video of it later today and i could just give it to you because i have no use for it ,, but yea ill get back to ye later on today :)
Is ANYONE? familiar with the MTX Blue Thunder PRO500XD??(not a D class amp?)It's a 2ch A/B amp!(like rest of the early Mtx Thunders!) Inside 20)-large caps,6)-medium caps,6)-med/small caps!(not the tiny ones there are(8)of those!, however it only has(10)Fet's,plus 2) large & 1)small torrid coils! It looks beefier than any of my 2300's(although no fan?) The sticker on back states(250x1@4ohms/12.5v)(500x1@2ohms/12.5v)(775w dynamic@14.4v)at 20hz-200hz?? I've never seen one on Ebay,Craigslist, car audio forums ect!,nor can I find anything on the internet about this amp??? it was made 3/17/99 also curious if its stronger than the 225ho or 2300??? if anyone has one for sale i'd love to buy a 2nd one(814)493-7199 Jim

My first sub was a Blue thunder 12 back when they were actually blue!

Is the later 2300x as good power wise as original 2300?
Yes, the sign can be modified, but it's not as easy as just turning it. It will take a little more time than I'm willing to devote right now, but I'll fix it before I mount it in the lab...
Those Coustic X-overs bring back a lot of good memories...

The later MTX amps were not PPI made, but there were influences from PPI, Rockford and Orion as they were known to share engineers over the years
How many miles per gallon does a truck get? Gotta be more specific,MTX Blue Thunder was a speaker line, not a particular speaker. Not to mention, there were many different models over the years and some models were capable of handling high power. Reply with the model and we'll see what info we can find about it
Good deal! I plan to test the 225HO soon as part of the '90's 25x2 cheater amps. It will possibly be the one to beat with the 90A of fusing!!
Keep up the great work and thanks for all you do!!!
I stumbled on this - 2300x a Pleitz design, 225HO a Broadley design. Different engineers, different design. I love that HO!
Yeah man, great job w/ the packing and I can't believe how fast it got to the east coast from Cali. The amp seems to work great, as you mentioned. i have a 2300 and a 2300x the 2300x is the same size as the 225ho and the 2300x has the output rca just like the 225ho
I don't, sorry. Maybe call MTX to see if they have any recommended repair centers for the older amps?
Have you had the guts open and compared the 2300x with the 225 ho?
Sweet! Gotta do a vid when you get it done, or better yet of the build process!
Nice! Gotta do a vid when it's done, or better yet a video or photo build log
Yeah, that Lanzar 50C is a BEAST! If you can get it back and want to sell it, LMK, I think it would smoke the other "50 watt" amps by a big margin...
Thanks for the offer, Not sure I have any need for that amp, but you can send me a message, let me know what U want for it and maybe some pics?
Will do,just went an dug my 2300 outa the closet.Still in box w/ wrapping paper an birth sheet. At 12.5V 327 Wrms/Ch cant wait to start a build!!
Not sure what you mean, the internal components seem to be standard to me?
I ran a pair of Rockford Fosgate Dvc 12 off a mtx 2300x. That set up was great. Next system was a couple directed electronics mono block amps and 4 jl 12w3s. The 2 Rockfords where much lower bass and way more violent force.
Yeah, the 225HO by Boss would be "20,000 Watts Max"...LOL
I was so disappointed to see the MTX Thunder 500.1 and that Massive Audio nano you tested sharing the same board.
I have found this amplifire in the trash box below my hous it still works and it was a nice foun
I made a lot of people mad with a 2300x and a single 15 20 years ago

New toy eager to see how it does on the bench!!
i have to say that the mtx 2300 thunder and the punch 200 from fosgate were 2 of the most greatest amp in the history.
I still have my Thunder 2300.... but after 15 years in storage all its good for now is burning voice coils.... have no idea what is wrong with it
i still have my 2300,4200,an 250.Been in storage for years.Gonna dig them out for a build.Team em up w/ my older 3- jl10's in a bandpass
Ive been looking at a MTX thunder 311d and the guy selling it says it works just fine, but when connected to power there is a red light instead of green or blue. Is that normal?
You should try a jbl bp1200.1 , not very efficient but man lots of power and took a beating and the insides are insane
1999 JBL BP1200.1 1200W Amp Dyno Test AD-1 ua-cam.com/video/ngVFrzCDLiA/v-deo.html
Was your 15"s SVC or dvc

Coustic was the first amp I ever owned.
Those old MTX amps were awesome. Thanks for sharing! I have a Thunder 2300 LE and Thunder 4320 LE (yes the limited edition chrome ones). I have video of them in action on my channel.
Very cool bro, those chrome amps look NICE!
hey bid D....the 225ho isn't like the 2300x like you stated. the 2300x is slightly like the older 2300 with a fan etc much more power supply caps than the 225ho....can you do a bench test on a 2300x?....please

Lower THD is better. THD = total harmonic distortion
hey bigdwiz i had a similar amps it was a mixed generation be tween the two in your vid it looked like the 225 ho but it was a blue thunder 2300 and it had the solid power&speaker Allen key terminal's like the 2300 and it was fan cooled as well by the looks of it it was 2300 in a 225 heat sink with small up grade's i had them running 4 15" mtx 8000 black with the flocked mtx logo back in the day

I had a white 225HO on 4 10" MTX 5000s.. Was in my 99 eclipse.. It was NO JOKE!
hey man! i got a vid up about the amp i was talking about showing the guts and everything of it!! :D
what is the formula you use to calculate the watts by using the fuse rating?
Watts=Amps x Volts.
Multiply fuse rating by 12v or use 14.4v(Most cars when running)
ever bench these? i got a 275X here ... think its worth keeping around ?
Is the lower the thd the better the amp or is it the higher I don't know how that works
Don't use THD to choose an amp. The THD rating is used to clarify the power rating. All amps have low THD until clipping. This is where they can cheat and give you a power rating at a high THD.
