Thank you so much for this video! I've tried to find out why specific artists use which ones for what reason for years but never really found a clear answer, just contradicting fragments of info. That made it harder for me to find out how to do it "right" in my own artwork. Finally getting that explanation about the different techniques and especially when to use which was exactly the info I needed!
I was wondering about this topic, and gladly this video popped out in my feed, it's really informative and it gave me technical reasons of why this lineart style even exists in the first place, I thought it was just some cool thing artist do to be quirky. Thanks a bunch!!
This was really helpful, thanks! I’ve been so focused on having varying line widths and avoiding having a “dead line”, that I haven’t been mindful of incorporating thinner lines for the background. It’s something you can easily pull off with a hunt 102 dip pen. Cheers!
after 6 months i finally found the reason my lineart sucks. i've been drawing for 6 years. i know colour theory and stuff but at times i would make lineless art just to purposefully avoid doing the lineart but not anymore. tysm
I love line work, as I'm most familiar with it in making art. But when I draw digitally, I always feel like my lines are way too thick all over, despite me shrinking the pen size so much! I am now having to shrink down to a value less than 1 on a pretty big canvas and that just seems ridiculous to me 😅
@@pinkajou656 I tend to dislike any sort of texture in my brush I use, but I can certainly try. I use Clip Studio Paint and my linework is always on a vector layer, just because I'm trying to make a webcomic where I draw the pages in print format first, then go back and resize/rearrange panels into a scrolling format. Literally have been working on it for a year now and have hardly anything to show for it, but I'm not the most disciplined at working every day, as I also stream three times a week and work full time 😅
Heavy outline used to be used for perspective technical drawings. Such as exploded drawings in a workshop manual. The lines should taper as they go to the background.
I used to draw like this, and still somewhat do... I found with realism sketches, it's great to use for important lines that are subtle and easy to lose.... Like elbow creases, direct lighting or shadow points, the curve of a car or an underboob..... It's used slightly differently than in comics, but ALOT the same
Its very important to understand the role of lines and shapes. A great Vid, thanks much. Btw, could anyone suggest an artist pen, wich can make thinner and weighty lines in one stroke? Do they use special brush tips with ink?
Great but what about the thick line that sometimes separates shadow from a bright area, on the same object, and it is not because of reflected light etc...
There's, unfortunately, not a one-size-fits-all path because of all of the different styles that fall under "drawing". I recommend doing figure drawing and anatomy study early before trying to tackle complex rendering so that you're not spending your time trying to properly render bad forms that will never look right.
That more than anything has been my most insurmountable barrier as an artist-my teachers would tell me my line weight was lacking without telling me what specifically I needed to do to improve. In other words, where to put the thick lines and where to make them thinner.
There’s so much to line weight and we cover even more in the premium course. Continue learning at proko.com/drawing
