Thanks Pete, this is really useful. My swing is the shallow one (why do all the swing videos on youtube only talk about the over the top issue?!). My miss is a hook, and I never take a divot after the ball, I have to try and sweep the ball to get a decent contact. I think this will help me!

    Another great video 👊🏻
… simple, clear, easy to understand
As a follow-up, please explain the “wrist hinging” ☝🏻
Is it an intentional movement in the backswing? … or a byproduct of the rotation?
Is it the “cupping” and in uncupping of the wrist? … or an up and down (“chopping”) motion of the wrist?
Does the wrist “rotate” during the swing? (like turning a doorknob)
Much of your power comes from the wrist hinge, right? So clarifying what wrist hinge is (and is not) is critical.
Keep up the good work 👍🏻

    Cheers Pete.
A slow motion zoomed in shot of what you mean by "compressing the ball" might help some people understand this idea more easily.

I love the negative comments on your videos Mr Finch. I think your tips are awesome. I think what some people think is that a tip will make you great a golf, reality is hard work and practice. People see numbers like a smash factor and say how do i get that better, its not just one thing, its get better at golf!. That takes us back to hard work and practice.
Keep it up in 2024, you are my favourite channel!

Pete, I have a question about shaft lean at address. I saw a video that said the shaft lean of a 60* wedge is naturally different than that of a the long irons. In other words, if the club’s sole is grounded flat each iron with progressively have less shaft lean. So a 60* setup upright at address is not actually 60 degrees but closer to 70. I ask because I noticed you have your 6 iron leaned forward at address. Am I struggling to get compression because I setup with the shaft upright? Should I have progressively more shaft lean with shorter clubs?
I have tried leaning at address. I’ve also tried a stronger grip. I tend to get a straight pull with short irons/wedges or a slice with long irons.

Pete question for you ? Is it a feeling that you start the downswing with the butt end of the club and you want to get that on top of the ball ?

Right elbow first hands later while downswing, is this correct?

I really just focus on watching the ball until it disappears when collected with the club, usually it results in a middle-face impact

How does this effect distance compared to people who generally don't compress?

Having learned this year how to compress the ball (7 iron from 170 yd --> 190 yd), my biggest tips would be:
    1) Place the ball further back in your stance
    2) Over-exaggerate the weight on your front foot ~ 90/10 split
    3) Over-exaggerate bowing your wrist into impact
A simulator can really help with this as it gives you immediate feedback on trajectory and distance

Wonder why its called compression of the golf ball? Just because you hit down on the ball, the ground is not pushing back so there is no real compression, only reducing the loft. 🤔🤔🤔

Pointing the butt of the club at the ball/target line was an EXCELLENT tip. He even tells you that too flat will make you bottom out before the ball, resulting in fats, and thins(by catching the ball as the club is already traveling back up). Too steep results in a pull, or pull/slice. Not sure you watched the whole video…..

@jamiesloan7259 yep it's a great tip. I went out and practiced it straight away in garden and cleanly struck all of my shots I was amazed

Getting the body to move like that is the reason why most golfers cannot compress their irons!! It's lack of muscle memory from not practicing 1000 balls a day, or an injury that keeps the body from moving properly, etc. it's no mystery!

There are a number of simple drills/swing thoughts on YoutTube that help those get into the correct impact position with a 3/4 swing. If you aren’t much on practice or lost your swing on the course, it’s an easy way to “find it” without much effort.

Even around 50% of pros don’t compress their irons either.
