Long time ago in Bethlehem so the holy bible say; Mary's boy child, Jesus Christ was born on Christmas day. While shepherds watched their flocks by night, them see a bright new shining star, them hear a choir sing, the music seemed to come from afar. Hark, now hear the angels sing, a new king born today, and men will live for evermore, because of Christmas day. Now Joseph, and his wife Mary, come to Bethlehem that night, them find no place to born the child, not a single room was in sight. By and by they find a little nook in a stable all forlorn and in a manger cold and dark, Mary' s little boy was borne. Hark, now hear the angels sing, a new king born today, and men will live for evermore, because of Christmas day. Trumpets sound and angels sing, listen to what they say, that man will live for evermore, because of Christmas day. that man will live for evermore, because of Christmas day.
Hers is indeed, wonderful. Have you heard Harry Belafonte's? He was the first I remember from when a young child, singing it. I also love, his version. The female voice, and the male voice, versions.
@jwilliam2255 Thanks for the comment John. The painting is 'The Annunciation to the Shepherds' from 1639 by the Dutch artist Govaert Flinck. I believe it hangs in the Louvre. It was just right for the piece.

This lovely carol was written by a man called Jester Hairston. He wrote this carol in 1956. It became a widespread hit in the US but due to racial hatred, it was often touted as being "traditional" because Hairston was an afro-american. It is important that whenever this song is performed it is properly attributed to its composer if for no other reason than to mock and irritate the racists who denied this fine artist his due recognition.
@@dhart28 Well, not necessarily - I would consider me a Democrat but indeed, I LOVE to irritate racists. Now I will go into Angelina Jordans version and attribute this beautiful song to Mr. Jester Hairston.:-)
My recollection is hearing Harry Belafonte, singing a beautiful song to Jesus, as a child. I loved his version and Sissels is, fantastic. I bet Harry and Sissel could have done a very nice duet, with this song.
Sing O Holy Night in English, please. Never Walk Alone is beautiful but rhythm or syncopation is off see Andrew Rieu.Got to find something wrong but otherwise voice is heavenly.
Long time ago in Bethlehem
so the holy bible say;
Mary's boy child, Jesus Christ
was born on Christmas day.
While shepherds watched their flocks by night,
them see a bright new shining star,
them hear a choir sing,
the music seemed to come from afar.
Hark, now hear the angels sing,
a new king born today,
and men will live for evermore,
because of Christmas day.
Now Joseph, and his wife Mary,
come to Bethlehem that night,
them find no place to born the child,
not a single room was in sight.
By and by they find a little nook
in a stable all forlorn
and in a manger cold and dark,
Mary' s little boy was borne.
Hark, now hear the angels sing,
a new king born today,
and men will live for evermore,
because of Christmas day.
Trumpets sound and angels sing,
listen to what they say,
that man will live for evermore,
because of Christmas day.
that man will live for evermore,
because of Christmas day.
Perfectly effortless clarity from the worlds loveliest talent. Simply beautiful.
A lullaby so beautiful. Thank you so much. Warms my heart ❤️
Tack, Sissel - bless you.
Merry Christmas to you and yours and to all my subscribers.
Don Rose, thanks for the info on the original writer. Nice song, nice rendition by Sissel. I've always said music knows no colour! God is colourful!!
Her version is the best I have heard so far.

Very interesting, I'll definitely give Mr. Hairston his recognition. I LOVE to irritate racists, because most of them are Democrats.
Thanks for sharing this.
